5:16 am
through bushes. wildlife experts say the two men in the group did everything right, fighting back and shouting aggressively at the animal before it let go. while those experts can't say why the boy was attacked, they say a child's height could make them more susceptible. >> generally mountain lions hunt deer primarily. if you think about how tall deer is, it's about 3, 4 feet tall. even though it's extreme lip rare, they are more similar in size than the prey species mountain lions are more used to. >> the boy has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. no word on whether the traps yielded anything overnight. it could be difficult to catch this mountain lion given that its territory could be up to 100 square miles, more if it's younger. >> thank you very much. >> fremont city leaders will celebrate a milestone in the

5:19 am
in the bay area. it's also my birthday month. as we head throughout the next couple days -- >> let there be cake! >> that's right, let them eat it as well. you can see from the shot of san francisco, mostly clear. what you'll notice here, you can actually see the bay bridge from top to bottom. we do have an overcast start to the day. our marine layer is at about 2,000 feet. we're experiencing the coldest morning we've had in two weeks. 52 degrees, right around sunrise in the north bay this morning. that is sweater territory, my friends. that's your sunrise time officially here in the bay area. trivalley will see a chilly start as well. the only place we're seeing the 60s as your morning low will be in san francisco. even with the blanket of low clouds, because our days are getting shorter, we're still seeing the cold starts.
5:20 am
westerly flow stays in place for us and it will be comfortable but noticeably warmer to about 5 to 8 degrees. not a big spike for you at the immediate coast today. 71 degrees for the east shore, 81 in the south bay. 77 on the peninsula today. on the north bay, you'll see 85 degrees, no 90s in the tri-valley. let's talk about some interesting stuff, huh? wine country. september is when we actually pick the grapes. last week they were picking the grapes. if you want to head up to wine country and get some of that fresh stuff, 94 degrees for you. as we head to the week,

5:31 am
this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. in a few hours, apple will hold its most anticipated announcement in years. apple fans will find out what the tech giant's next gadget could be. scott, we have some inkling where this could go, right? >> we do have some inkling. let's talk about the history here. the flint center, that is where, before my time i have to admit, steve jobs introduced the mcintosh. now, apple has been able to create some history and some excitement ever since. you recall back in 2004 jobs introduced the u2 ipod and you had those u2 television commercials like this one where they sang "vertigo."
5:32 am
we expect that to happen again today with u2 taking some sort of involvement with the product announcement today. as for that preview you were talking about, i think the larger iphone is pretty much understood. iphone 6, although the engineers have told me they're going to start numbering it at some point. also, perhaps some kind of wrist watch and more importantly from the financial point of view is the ability to pay using your phone, using it right there at 7 7 7-eleven, using it right at the gas pump or in the store.
5:33 am
>> thank you, scott. big time apple fans are already anticipating the announcement and camp out at this flagship store. they may be waiting a while. it typically takes about ten days from the time of the announcement until the time it hits store shelves. not all are fans. some have been hired by others just to hold their spot in line. others are there to resell items at a premium. others just want to be a part of the action. that was a culture that steve jobs was able to create when he took over apple for the second time. jobs wanted the lines to show the new apple products were in high demand. there was also the extra added bonus that when people camp out, especially for days at a time, news outlets, much like ourselves, get excited and we
5:34 am
create more buzz. we'll have all the details on the announcement during our 11:00 a.m. newscast, including a live report from cupertino. >> it is 5:33. san bruno city council will meet today to discuss what to do with the money pg&e is supposed to pay them. the meeting marks four years with the explosion and it will end for a moment of silence for the eight people who lost their lives that day. 38 homes were destroyed, many of them have to be rebuilt. two independent audits found for the 15 years leading up to the explosion, pg&e devoted more than $100 million to gas safety operations measures to bonuses. they have proposed $950 million would go to the general fund but the city's mayor wants less
5:35 am
money to go to the state and more money to offset proposed rate hikes. >> the council is debating an ordinance tonight that would require cancer and radiation warnings on all phones. retailers would have to put stickers on cell phone packages that the devices may emit cancer, causing radiation. this move is similar to the ordinance that san francisco put in place in 2010. an industry group appealed the law and a federal judge struck down the requirement that you have to put labels on phone saying it violated retailers' free speech. >> the city of san jose may be asking owners of private security cameras to register them with the police department in an effort to fight and solve crimes. stephanie, it's a program the city says will cost very little?
5:36 am
>> that's right. supporters say big benefits of solving and fighting crimes at minimal to no cost to taxpayers. council member sam licardo is leading this effort. he said it can really help police officers in terms of know hog to call and where to go to get footage. but the philadelphia police department says one extra step san jose should invest in is in installing an address verification system. that is something that city had to deal with. and the cost to verify up to 10,000 addresses, for instance, just $80. now san jose city staff cites san ramone's success story.
5:37 am
there have been concerns about privacy but police will not have access to footage unless the owner willingly hands it over. supporters say the benefits are too great to miss. a study of the baltimore area concluded when cameras were installed, violent crimes went down 23%? just a matter of six months. there are still some concerns of privacy, of protecting the identity of those who register their cameras here in san jose. >> interesting to see if it makes a difference. san jose used to be the safest big city in the bay area. council members will also talk about the proposal to build a patent office in silicon valley. they've been considering it for some time but today they may vote to give a contract to a construction company to start building that company. they are considering a cap of
5:38 am
$9.6 million on the project. san jose creates the most patents but the closest patent office is on the east coast. >> we are absolutely, positively savoring these final days of summer. >> we are. it's been lovely, entertainment it? >> absolutely fine. and even better than fine maybe. >> he's feeling fine, my friends. good morning to you. summer is holding on tight here in the bay area. today will be nice, tomorrow will be hot inland. but look at your overnight lows. as our days get shorter, this is showing up more and more as we get deeper into the month of september. we're now in the mid 50s to start the morning. you're going to see plenty of low 50s at the end of our week. this is what you can expect for
5:39 am
today. overcast start, gradual clearing. as a result of the earlier clearing, temperatures will be noticeably warmer. widespread 70s. for today, we're right under your average weather for this time of year. by tomorrow we're going to bypass your average hias these temperatures climb. on the east shore around 71 there. you're going to trade in your 80 degrees for 90 tomorrow. the weekend is still quite a ways away. we're going to be live at levi stadium on friday morning. temperatures are going to be
5:40 am
warm out there but make sure if there's one show you tivo or watch, it's going to be friday morning right here on "today in the bay." i say shenanigans if we're out that live. what do you think? >> i think you're right. we're looking at school days and still worried about credit. we had reports of something going on on the high rise. i saw things really jam up and then start to move better. looks like there may have been a slower moving vehicle but i will track that for you. the fast track lanes moving nicely. tuesday, the volume of traffic pretty heavy today. over toward the trivalley, west 580 continues to build. no slowing here. anything lower than 55.
5:41 am
it's slower back in livermore. and in the south bay, this is a representation of the heavier drive here, northbound 101, just starting to bog down. that's the zone for 101 where things get kind of jammed up. sam, i think you have something that might be of concern to them. >> thank you, mike. a very busy south bay road is about to get even more crowded. crews are shifting the lanes between 101 and 680 on allen rock. sound like fun? crews will replace the sewer and get the road ready for construction on a future rapid transit project. here's the kicker -- the lanes will be shifted for up to five months. >> found a route around. we'll check in with mike.
5:42 am
5:44 am
5:45 am
>> the patient is not being named. we do know a doctor that tested positive with the virus in sierra leone. the patient will be evacuated from sierra leone and is due any time this morning. emory university is riding high from the successful recovery of two other american patients, dr. kent brantley and nancy made full recoveries. a third patient is recovering at a facility in omaha, nebraska, thought without the same series that the previous two patients got. he is getting a different serum.
5:46 am
the fourth patient is in the u.s. and will arrive this morning. we are watching for that and we will bring you more details as we get them. sam? >> thank you very much. >> doctors in the bay area are warning parents to be lookout on a virus that could be spreading to the area. more than a thousand kids across the country have been hospitalized because of the enterovirus. in denver, some kids are so sick they've been put in intensive care. symptoms include troubled breathing, severe cough, wheezing, fever and a rash. doctors around the bay area are keeping their eyes open. >> we start to see children with
5:47 am
similar symptoms, such as severe respiratory compromise, with what seems that started as a common cold, we'll be sending samples for specialized testing. >> you should send your children to the doctor if they start wheezing. >> check out this gopro video. you can see the smoke billowing in the background. more than 100 people were shuttled to safety. over the weekend the fire grew from a few hundred acres to nearly 3,000 acres in just a matter of hours. that caught a pair of hikers from daly city off guard. >> when you're up and you look down, you see that's a fire. >> i didn't nope about the evacuations.
5:48 am
at one point we saw two swedish women like sprinting and frantic and they stopped and talked to us for a second and asked why we weren't running down the mountain. >> why weren't you running down the mountain? they said if they had known people were getting flown off of hatdome, they would have taken the trip, too. zit time to check in with meteorologist christina loren. nice start to our day. >> yeah, it's starting to feel more and more like fall as our days are getting shorter. this morning the sun will rise at 6:44. temperatures are going to be pretty chilly. we're starting off at 60 in san francisco. meanwhile mid 50s for the peninsula and south bay with a full deck of low cloud out there this morning. even after these low cloud burn
5:49 am
off, we're going to keep that westerly flow going. that cool ocean air will continue to pump all the way through the delta. a good looking day, though. temperatures in the low 80s for us here in the south bay. but about a 5 degree to 8 degree jump from where we ended up yesterday. likely you will notice the deference. the peninsula at 76. becoming sunny as we head throughout the day today. in the north bay, 85 degrees for you, 71 on the east shore and the tri-valley 87. we get another spike in numbers as we head to thursday. we're looking for pretty warm temperatures wednesday into thursday. but between saturday and sunday, those numbers fall again. now, i'm always looking 15 to 20 days out to see if we can see any chance for rain and i found
5:50 am
a couple pretty good looking systems. we'll talk about that coming up. first i want to check your drive. here's mike inouye. >> we're looking at the bay bridge, we didn't even talk about this. we did talk about the lights being turned on shortly and there you go. this is going back past the 880 overcross. it's tuesday. we see that build happening much quicker over here. we're looking at more traffic knocked to 101. this is the other build going on. it's from 680 up to 880. this is the first burst we typically see. again, tuesday sees a heavier volume of traffic. this should light i don't know over the next 20 minutes to half an hour. that will be kicking in full force here. that's sort of the cascade that happens as far as your commute for the south bay. tri-valley, nothing unusual.
