>> you took the words out of my mouth. that's what i've been thinking about all week. today and tomorrow. you can see how the fog has already begun to retreat. 63 in livermore. after the sun continues to come up and the fog gets out of here, we are going to look at temperatures near 100 in the tri-valley today, near 90 in the south bay. you'll notice temperatures not as hot especially once you get outside. yesterday was really a scorcher. temperatures coming down by only a couple degrees today. there is potential of our first rainfall of the season. we'll talk more about that. this morning minnesota viking's star running back adrian peterson is out on bail after turning himself into police in montgomery county,

texas. he was booked on charge of injury to a child. peterson has been deactivated for tomorrow's game after being indicted by a texas grand jury injuring his 4-year-old son with a switch or tree branch. the boy suffered cuts and bruises to his back and legs. peterson's attorney released a statement saying peterson is a loving father and he used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child going up in east texas. we talked with one lawyer reacting to the controversy in the nfl. >> adrian peterson's conduct was criminal and not legitimate child rearing. this has been a national debate on what is appropriate corporal punishment. clearly, according to the authorities, he crossed the line. >> last month, commissioner roger goodell announced an enhanced personal conduct policy on matters related to its domestic violence. that policy includes child abuse. no official criminal charges

yet for 49ers' lineman ray mcdonald. looks like the case will remain in limbo a while longer. santa clara county district attorney postponed a court hearing scheduled for next monday. he is accused of hit his pregnant fiancee and may be facing felony domestic violence acharge. san jose police arrested him august 31st. a new court date will be announced on monday. good news in the national football league now. the show goes on in santa clara. this is a historic weekend for the bay area and the 49ers. the team's home opener is set for 5:30 tomorrow night. no more dress rehearsals. it is finally here. last night a full 48 hours before the 49ers take on the chicago bears, fans packed the house. the stadium stores were sold out and shoppers gave rave reviews to the team store. >> it's awesome. they have a lot of good stuff in here.

go to nbcbayarea.com. our guide will show you around. only on nbc bay area, surveillance images may help police find clues about who killed a homeless woman in san jose. authorities found her body yesterday morning on north 15th street near oakland road. she died from blunt force trauma. nbc bay area obtained surveillance images from a nearby store that showed the woman earlier in the night with visible head injuries. she came into that store two separate times to report being assaulted. a short time after her second visit, police found her body. >> betty was a nice girl, but she was homeless and she had, you know, she had a lot of problems. it's hard. it's tough for a female to be homeless. >> police say they have talked to three people with interest but it is not clear if any or all of them are possible suspects. >> parents in palo alto are on high alert after someone posing as a police officer pulled over a teenager last friday and

brandished a gun at the teen. there are new details. this police sketch of that suspect this morning. palo alto police say the high school student was riding his bike when the suspect pulled him over in an unmarked car. the man used a loud speaker to yell at the teenager for committing a traffic infraction. the phony cop then displayed a silver badge and held up a stun gun or hand gun pointing at the roof of the car before driving off. >> the kid is okay. he is shaken. we are concerned because we have a stranger contacting a child representing himself as a law officer. >> the suspect is a balding white man in his 60s about 5'10". he was wearing a light blue collared shirt and driving a cream-colored four door sedan with radio antenna on the roof. necklaces snatched off their owner's next. it's become a disturbing trend in sunnyvale.

there have been 15 different robberies. these are surveillance images. investigators think a group of people is committing the crimes because of differing suspect derricks. the incidents all play out the same way. victims are approached from behind by the thieves who quickly grab the necklaces. in some cases the robber had a gun. to another case in fremont, police are hoping someone can identify these suspects from a home invasion robbery. the two allegedly broke into a home on monticello terrace august 14th robbing the victims at gun point. one of the things they swiped was a debit card which they used in cupertino, san jose and milpitas. the suspects were seen in a black four-door 2014 ford fusion. both suspects are in their 20s. one 6 feet tall and the other 5'5". the dna is a match. forensic experts say dna evidence proves the mountain lion shot this week was the same one that attacked a 6-year-old

boy. wardens say they had no choice but to shoot and kill the animal because of his aggressive behavior. trackers found him wednesday not far from where he attacked the boy. that little boy was hiking with his family last sunday when the cougar sprang out of the brush and bit him. the boy suffered cuts and gashes on his back and neck. tests showed the mountain lion did not have rabies. the boy is recovering. there has been another mountain lion sighting. this one spotted at 10:30 thursday night on devonshire boulevard. the animal was standing over a dead deer. deputies searched the area, but so far have not seen the lion. much more ahead on today in the bay. a disaster declaration. federal money is coming in for the south napa quake. one group of victims won't see any of it. she knows first hand what it takes to beat cancer. she is helping other patients see through the suffering.

time 7:10. let's give you a look outside. clear skies. none of that early morning fog. let's head over to san jose. little haze in the background. it will warm up nicely today. federal money is on its way to help rebuild after the napa earthquake. but many people are out of luck. the federal disaster declaration signed by the president only covers uninsured public property and some nonprofits so far. individual property owners are not yet eligible for federal assistance which has a lot of people there concerns. the mayor of napa says she hopes the president will add to his initial aid package soon. homeowners say they are depending on it. >> we'll need declaration number two which we are working on right now. >> it's hard to understand why

the common people aren't getting help. they're the ones that need it the most, i would think. >> congressman mike thompson sent a letter to the president urging him not to turn his back on earthquake victims. quake damage in the napa county jail is so bad parts are no longer safe. the napa county department of corrections is under a court order to transfer about 60 inmates to the solano county jail. it is the cracks and buckling that have leaders worry about the safety of inmates and staff. the transfers are already under way. meanwhile, the jail remains closed to the public. only video visitation is being allowed right now. more news ahead on "today in the bay." how levi's and the 49ers' history combine for a unique fit. waking up to coastal fog. your weekend forecast and get you into this final stretch of summer.

bay area and that's our jeans. we can chase our roots to the 1870s when levi strauss arrived in san francisco to capitalize on the gold rush. he took out a patent for a new invention, the style of denim pants fortified. >> they were made specifically for men working in mines or working as carpenters. >> the new jeans were a hit with the working stiff so he built a factory. >> this would have been on battery street near pine. >> which didn't last too long. >> that same building burned down in the san francisco quake and fire. >> reporter: strauss built a new plant on valencia street which was pressed into service until 2002. >> not many people are aible to trace their history back over 160 years. >> reporter: the earliest connection to the 49ers, the football team, that is, traces back to a '50s advertisement.

frankfurters, fired pizza and garlic fries. there are plenty of gourmet options, as well. more than 180 culinary choices. some of those include the indian lamb curry and a barbecue pulled pork sandwich with an apple jalapeno cold slide. you can pick up a pork bun or smoked salmon sandwich. for the vegetarian crowd, barbecued jack fruit are among the options. on a liquid diet, more than 30 craft beers on tap. 49ers are estimating they will sell more than 13,000 slices of pizza and 5,000 burgers tomorrow night. fans are expected to buy 7,000 frankfurters and 12,000 garlic fries. it is a big weekend on nbc bay area. this afternoon notre dame football starts at 4:30. after the game, tune in to watch our 49ers special followed by nbc bay area news. tomorrow night, showtime. levi stadium debut on sunday night football. 49ers and bears right here on nbc bay area.

our coverage starts at 4:00. following the game our 49ers special called "the faithful" then our news followed by "sports sunday. let's bring in anthony slaughter with a look at the weekend forecast. what is it going to look leak tomorrow for the home opener? >> warm, much warmer than it usually is in san francisco. drink plenty of water. if you don't have the water, of course, you can purchase it there. water bottles, light-colored clothing. opt for a white t-shirt with a little red in there instead of red t-shirt with white. >> thank you for the fashion tips. >> i'm not a fashionista. i'm just helping you beat the heat. we are talking temperatures in the mid 80s. it's going to be hot, down-right hot. talk about your forecast today though. we are starting to see our skies beginning to clear up in santa rosa. starting to see the wind take over across the central valley over towards the east bay starting to see skies clear there. it's all because our winds are offshore.

it's beginning to push all that fog back to the coastline. your headlines for today doesn't keep the coastal clouds in place another hour or so. we are already starting to clear out in our inland valleys. plenty of hazy sunshine all day long for inland valleys. it is going to be very warm even though it's not going to be as hot as it has been. temperatures will reach into the 80s and 90s this afternoon. tonight we'll see a mainly clear sky. sunset each and every day getting a little bit shorter. right now it's 7:22 this evening. 60 in san francisco. 57 at half moon bay. that's where you have to go to get relief from the heat. it's 63 in livermore. that's where we are expected our warmest temperatures today. close to 100 in the tri-valley. even in the north bay today, 92. san francisco, not as warm as you were yesterday. still nice. 74 there. east shore 76. again, the place that is going to be the hottest, trite valley at 98. the peninsula nice. not as warm. 82. 90 for the south bay.

again, you get the picture. still hit but not as hot. monterey looking good. temperatures in the upper 70s there. half moon bay, 75 for today. santa cruz is where we'll see some of the best beach weather. 83 for today. a little bit cooler for tomorrow. of course, who has been telling you all about the 49ers tomorrow taking on the bears? here is your official forecast in santa clara. temperatures will be very warm. 84 for kick-off. falling back into the 70s by 7:00. full sunshine all day long. not going to be a cloud in the sky. it will be hard to escape from that heat. can't forget about the raiders. taking on your homeowner. taking on the texans sunday at 1:25. similar situation there. not as hot though. you'll notice temperatures very comfortable reaching back up to the mid 70s by 1:00. here is the thing we've been telling you about. our next chance of rain moving close to the bay area. we've got two systems. first the cold front area of low

pressure. that will come in like it typically does. another system, this is tropical storm many odeil. this particular computer model not really picking up on a whole lot of rainfall. each and every day this week we've been seeing these computer models go in and out. it does look like at the coast line by wednesday night and thursday, we could see a good chance of shower activity. not a whole lot but a little bit of a shock factor considering we have been seeing really anything fall from the sky in the form of rainfall. keep an eye on this. tune in tomorrow because each and every day that forecast does get refined. this will be looking more promising for rain here. vicky, back to you. >> thank you so much. we do need that rain. still ahead on "today in the bay" -- >> cancer, one of the things people do not talk about is how it affects the finances.

imagery. >> good chi here, too. >> reporter: not far from there, christine performed acupuncture on natalie. three different practitioners, three different therapies, three different cancer patients, all brought together by a single woman. a woman who knows exactly what those patients are going through. >> i was diagnosed with two cancers, ovarian/uterine cancer in november '06. >> reporter: before her diagnosis, she was never one to consider what she calls complementary healing treatments, but sandra says she was up for trying anything at the time that might help ease the pain, not to mention the fear that came with surgery and chemotherapy. >> happy to report it did, so that's why we are sharing with others. >> reporter: sharing it in a big way.

through the sandra j. wing healing therapies foundation, over the past six years, raising money and providing grants to patients in the tri-valley to get treatments like the ones that helped sandra. treatments that sandra says she was fortunate to be able to pay for, but knows that's not the case with everyone. >> because cancer, one of the things people do not talk about is how it affects the finances. nobody really talks about that. >> reporter: in its short history, sandra's foundation helped close to 500 grateful patients because they are all local, sandra often will get stopped at the grocery store or wherever they might find her and thank her for making their difficult journey a little more comfortable to take. >> i don't appreciate it enough, to be honest. i don't take the time to really go wow, this is incredible.

it's common for the commissioner to attend the first game at a new stadium. the 49ers believe even though goodell has had a tumultuous week, he will be in santa clara tomorrow. >> this is a historic weekend for the bay area and the 49ers. the team's home opener against the chicago bears less than 36 hours away. last night the celebrations started early. fans packed the house. the stadium tours were sold out. diners packed the restaurant and a steady stream of shoppers filled the team store. >> this is awesome. they have a lot of good stuff in here. the restaurant above the stadium, with the wi-fi and technology, everything, looks like it will be a great day on sunday. >> stadium offings say this will be the first test of traffic and they are hoping all the kinks have been worked out. we are learning more about the pregame show for tomorrow's opener. yesterday the executive producer of the show revealed the first time who will be singing the

a 37-year veteran. >> fire fighting in this outfit well over 100 years. something always surprises us. the day you quit learning as a firefighter is the day you need to retire. >> it is a high-risk, high-thrill job but spt high paying. starting pay is $11 an hour. forget about six california. the unique idea to split our state into six separate states failed to qualify for the ballot yesterday. tim draper was behind the initiative. he wanted to split california into six states so each area could be better represented. the measure was supposed to be on the 2016 ballot, but the secretary of state's office said only 66% of the signatures that were submitted were actually valid. the mysterious light in the sky has people buzzing from los angeles to the bay area. experts at the space center tell us it may have been a meteor. this is what people saw early friday morning, a streak of light. some witnesses say it changed

colors from white to red and then disappeared. the light was seen up and down the state and spotted as far north as washington state. >> i walked out of this door here and i saw this light kind of over the top. it was pointed up like this. it had a triangular shape like that. and then it slowly turned right. >> sky observers reported seeing something moving through the atmosphere on the eyewitness page of the american meteor society. much more ahead on "today in the bay." once considered a shoo-in, a's are fighting for their love lives in seattle.

the 49ers' home opener tomorrow against the bears at 5:30. 49ers may be getting all the headlines, but the giants have a big weekend themselves. a battle for first place in the west against their dreaded rivals from southern california. to at&t park, bottom of the fifth. san francisco is already up 4-0. let's make that six when brandon crawford hammered this two-run shot over the right field wall. giants win 9-0. they are only one game behind l.a. for the division lead. >> the story not so good for the a's though. taking on the mariners in seattle. game one of a pivotal series in the wild card race. game tied at 2-2 in the fifth. logan morrison breaks that tie with a solo shot to right. oakland would not score again and seattle holds on to win 4-2. the two teams are now tied in the wild card standings. still to come on "today in the bay, "sfchlt we'll take you on a journey on how we got here.

one day away from the 49ers open at levi stadium. we are waking up to fog and clouds, especially at the coastline. hazy sunshine in our inland valleys. we'll talk about our first rain of the season.

welcome back. 7:43 is the time right now. waking up to clear skies. we already cleared out in places like concord and livermore, san jose. you can see looking from the north bay we are starting to see that fog retreat. we are looking at hazy sunshine all day long from our inland valleys to the coast line. that fog starting to retreat. in another hour or so we'll be done with that. it will be hazy all day long as temperatures really get up there. it won't be as hot. we are talking 80s and 90s across the board. then it will stay clear as we head towards sunset. now our sunset is 7:22. it's getting shorter every day

as we get closer to the rainey season. 55 in san martin. 59 in san carlos. 63 in livermore. that is a sure sign how hot it will be later this afternoon. our highs will still be warm. 92 in the north bay. san francisco 74. east shore at 76. the tri-valley, without a doubt, that will be one of our warmest at 98. the peninsula up to 82. in the south bay, 90. it's still going to be hot, but again not as hot as it has been over the past couple of days. this weekend, vicky and i have been talking about it. ghiradelli chocolate festival happening around noon. here is the thing about it. you do have to pay for some of those samples. get on line docks that. sign up for it now. they are going to have awesome samples. get out there and check it out. we'll see fog develop by 4:00. otherwise nice and sunny. also happening tomorrow.

the solano stroll. the 40th annual on solano avenue. get out there and check out over 500 vendors expected to be there. this is going to be a huge event. this is a picture from last year. you see how packed it is. expect it to be a very nice time. temperatures back in the lower 70s. we've been telling you about this chance of rain. our first rain we could see. i'll set you up on wednesday. computer models don't have a good idea as to what's going to happen with these systems. that's where it comes in meteorological understanding, right? we've got a cold front to our north. tropical storm to our south. watch what happens. they are not going to have a whole lot of moisture, but as this gets closer to the bay area, it's going to offer a chance for showers, especially with that onshore push. we'll see fog and drizzle. especially thursday. that system to our south is expected to scoot up the coast line. here is the discrepancy between the computer models. one computer model takes it out to the ocean. other takes it up to tahoe.

we know we'll get a few showers. the thing about it, if we don't get a whole lot wednesday and thursday, we are just getting started with our rainey season. we have another chance of rain as we push into october 3rd and 6th. this may be a more substantial chance of rain even if we don't get a few hundredeth of an inch. computer models are not gospel. if you don't see the green, that doesn't mean it's not going to happen. the computer models update every day. by this evening, it could be green on the map all over. we'll keep you posted. >> that's why we come to you, anthony slaughter. stay right here. it took about 2 1/2 hours from the time the game got out till we got to our door in los gatos at midnight. >> a soccer match and niners preseason game tore up the new field. >> we are taking a look at the overall field and health of the grass. >> because of the faulty grass, levi's had to postpone two high school football games and crews resodded the field before the next preseason game. fans returned as levi stadium hosted the mexican national team. this time fans came prepared to wait out the traffic jams and restarted their tailgate parties. >> two hours to get home. >> now the wait is over. football has arrived in the south bay at a place called levi's with the five-time super bowl champions. >> how did we get here? it was a major project taking more than two years. by all accounts, construction

>> thank you for having me. >> tell us about these chihuahua puppies. >> we rescued sadie and seymour, we rescued their mommy from a shelter down south about. two days after we rescued the mommy, she had a little of five. in fact, this is their 2-month birthday today. they were born in our shelter. they are spayed and neutered and ready for adoption. >> we were talking about this before. chihuahua make up a disproportionate amount of puppies and dogs that end up in shelters. why is it so important to get them spayed and neutered? >> it's the way california is. i came from a shelter back in delaware. in delaware it was pit bulls. people have been attracted to the breed and then because of a lack of spaying and neutering, you end up having sort of this overpopulation situation. >> these guys can go together or they can go separately to a

home? >> absolutely. >> seymour is the little boy. he has a wire hair long coat. there is sadie with the smooth coat. talk about the personality characteristics and which homes chihuahuas do best in. >> they love to be with families. they love kids. they love to be frolicking around. of course, they are small so you don't need to have big yards. they are pretty active animals. any time you can have a dog like this go into a home with activity is great for the animals and pets. >> they are really sweet. they are getting a lot of conditioning as puppies. >> yes. we try to socialize them. when they come in, once they reach the appropriate weight and age, spayed and neutered, microchipped. vaccinations. we try to associate them with other animals and people. if they go into a situation
