9:00 pm
people see. they feel. and the players see it and feel it. and you have to bring your a-game when you play. >> as you evaluate your own game or look at your own game, where do you expect to make the biggest jump from last season? >> just the control of the offense. whether it's getting to the right play, checking the different things versus coverage and look or just getting in progressions. i think all those things are things i've been working on. things i want to make sure when we get to the season and we step on the field that i have full control and command over. so there is no pressure on other players. it's he knows what he's doing and he's going to make the right decision for this offense and for this team. >> three full seasons with jim harbaugh. going into your fourth year, where do you think he's had the biggest impact on your game? >> he's had an impact in a lot of places. from simple fundamentals of going through progressions to
9:01 pm
how we want to read things, how i should look at defenses. there's a lot of things that he gives us tips on and knows how to do because he played. and i think that's something that you normally don't get from a head coach because they haven't played the position. >> you are obviously on the last team that played at candlestick, the first team that played here. does that hold any significance to you being able to usher in a new era at levi's stadium? >> yeah. i think it's an opportunity for us to build our own legacy. make our own dynasty similar to the 49ers in the '80s or '90s. i mean, that was the golden era. we want to bring that back. we want to have that success. and i think this team is prime for that. it's time to just step up to the plate. >> with that being said, how would you define success for the 2014 49ers? >> super bowl.
9:02 pm
plain and simple. >> that's pretty simple. colin kaepernick last year first full year as a starter. you look at the numbers, he's got 21 touchdown passes in 2013. matt sat down for that exclusive interview. did you notice any difference in him, matty? does he seem more mature now? >> you can tell that the guy's here for the long haul. and, you know, he's putting a lot more on his shoulders. and, you know, when you talk to him, the thing he talked a lot about was the progressions. and i think he was always kind of thought of as a one-read quarterback. we saw week one he's no longer a one-read quarterback. partly because he has more than one guy to throw the ball to. they have a very good stable of wide receivers you guys talked about. so now if there's a guy being double teamed, there's going to be somebody else open. he doesn't have to just look to one guy because in the past last year a lot of times until crabtree came back they didn't have a number two wide receiver.
9:03 pm
so nobody was getting open if anquan boldin wasn't getting open. >> dana, last year you were critical of him not because his talent is off the chart, early on you didn't like his decision making. >> not just the reads and things like that and him not being able to take over a game. you listen to him in an interview with matt, you can tell he's got confidence. the dynasty of the 9 ers is set. now he's got to get his legacy here at levi's stadium. let him have the highlights. let him get the catch or pass or whatever you want to call it so the dynasty of the 49ers is set. ronnie, all those guys way before us have done that. so he's got confidence and i'm glad to hear him say super bowl or bust. >> dennis. >> yeah. he talks real good. i mean, i think i saw the maturity. you know, i'm not a big quarterback guy. i don't understand quarter babs. i wouldn't want to play quarterback in this league. but i saw a little bit of maturity. you saw him sort of go through his progressions.
9:04 pm
he's got more weapons. he's not just looking at the one receiver down the field. he's looking to make the play. couple times he had pressure in his face, he didn't take off and run. he threw some fantastic balls against dallas. not such a good defense, but still, i saw some maturity. >> he did throw some great balls after being tripped and not falling and then hitting vernon davis. that one sticks out the most. he likes playing for another coach -- another quarterback. jim harbaugh was a quarterback for many years. jim harbaugh in his first three years regular season won more games than anyone in the history of the nfl not named george seefert. he led them to one super bowl, three nfc championship games. he's in four of a five-year contract. everyone says let's get a deal done. supposedly he and -- said we'll shelve that. let's get through this season. then we'll talk about an
9:05 pm
extension. certainly they don't want to go into next season without a contract. where does this all stand? >> it stands just like that. this season is very important. whenever you talk -- whenever you hear a coach talk about we'll talk about a contract after this season, those next games are of major importance. i mean, this might not be the stadium that jim harbaugh built, but this is definitely the stadium that jim harbaugh financed because if it weren't for the teams in 2011 and 2012 and 2013, you know, would this thing be paid for like it is? it's inconceivable to think they'd move on without him, three nfc championships, one super bowl trip. but there's a lot going on behind the scenes. >> dana, you guys are professionals. i know there are certain coaches you like, certain you don't. bottom line is winning, right? if you win with this guy, then do the players like this guy?
9:06 pm
>> there's mixed emotions about that in the locker room. some guys like him, some guys don't. but he is a winner. he's a proven winner. so i think that's the key. with mr. york and i and everybody wants to see around here, they want to get back to the old times where all we did was win. and that's what jim brought back here. he knows how to win. he can get it done. >> all right. coming up next, we're going to look at the 49ers schedule and predict what the future holds because, let's be honest, the 49ers are in a very, very critical season. we'll say who's got a run at the championship and who doesn't. we'll continue with predictions on "dawn of a new era."
9:07 pm
9:08 pm
it's a dawn of a new era. and here's the 49ers schedule going forward. tomorrow is a primetime matchup against chicago on nbc.
9:09 pm
they'll travel to arizona then return home to host philly and k.c. monday night football week six in st. louis. a huge test in primetime visiting peyton manning and the broncos. after the by week the rams come to town. then two tough road tests in new orleans and new york. the 49ers battle seattle thursday november 27th, thanksgiving, then go on the road to face them just two weeks later. dennis, your initial thoughts on the upcoming schedule. >> i look at that denver game. you know, every game is important, but i look at that denver game and, you know, we know what peyton manning brings to the table. that's going to be a challenge, especially for this defense that's got some issues as far as the secondary goes. so when i look at that schedule, i see the division games. but that denver game really sticks out to me. >> yeah, having to play that on the road at mile high, tough. what sticks out to you, dana? >> just the whole nfc decision. everybody's tough. arizona playing well, st. louis playing well. so it's not going to be easy
9:10 pm
road for these guys. the saints are playing well. so it's more those guys do what they did in dallas, took all that outside distraction, left it outside and really concentrated on each other and helped each other get a win. >> they put matty and i don't think it's any coincidence see yat -- seattle game's late in the season. >> i like that the 49ers should be at full strength then. good chance bowman could be back. smith scheduled to be back by that time. you like to see split up a little more than two weeks apart, but the fact it's crunch time, thanksgiving night, a ball game here and then two weeks later up there, 49ers see if they can conquer those demons up in seattle. at that game they should definitely have their full team. >> only week two, dennis, but is seattle the best team in the league right now? >> if you look at first week in the nfl and you look at what that offense did, i watched them and i was impressed. i was impresed by the offense but also impressed by the
9:11 pm
defense. i look at those linebackers, just the athletes they are. and they are a good football team. pete carroll and ken norton jr. they've got those guys fired up. so i wouldn't say the best team in the national football league, but they're pretty darn good. >> well, the problem is, dana, i don't know if you know they play in the 49ers division. so read all about it. i mean, that's the problem. >> yes. and i disagree with dennis. they are the best team right now. the way they -- i mean, all their weapons, everybody's firing, everybody's looking good. they came out at week one and showed everybody and told them, look, we left off where we won, super bowl. >> yeah. this is a rivalry, matty, and you know this. we're going to talk about this all season long. one of the things i found interesting was when they did the als ice bucket challenge and pete carroll said he challenged everyone and jim harbaugh took it and said, oh, you took pete carroll's challenge. he goes, no, no, i took my brother's challenge.
9:12 pm
he wouldn't give pete carroll credit for the ice bucket challenge. >> no, these teams don't like each other. i mean, richard sherman had every reason to be talking about his own accomplishments and his team throughout the entire offseason, but he did not pass up an opportunity to take a shot at michael crabtree. so he's thinking about the 49ers. he's thinking about michael crabtree. >> one thing we know for sure is behind us it's going to look a lot different tomorrow. and no one will have you covered like comcast sports net bay area. our debut pregame show begins at 4:30. pregame live dennis and dana and matty will join me. and as soon as the game is over, click it over to comcast sports net bay area and watch the post game show. levi's stadium, the bears and the 49ers on sunday night football. enjoy. and we will see you tomorrow.

9:14 pm
nbc bay area news starts now. the 49ers are ready, the stadium is ready. and the fans are ready. and we are counting down to the 49ers season opener at levi's stadium. everything you need to know before tomorrow's kickoff. good evening everyone. welcome to this special edition of "nbc bay area news."
9:15 pm
we're on now because of college football. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> of course there have been a few preseason hiccups to tell you about, that would be the parking problems, the congested traffic and bad turf that caused a few issues. hopefully all of those issues fixed for tomorrow's game. and fans are just brimming with excitement. nbc's live at levi's stadium. i can only imagine folks there, mary ann, this is the moment they've been waiting for. >> reporter: absolutely. in fact, some say tomorrow really is the big test for this new levi's stadium because nearly 70,000 people will be arriving here and leaving the stadium at the same time. but i can also tell you that businesses in this area are already reaping the rewards of this new stadium. fasten your harness because it's going to be a wild ride for the 49ers season home opener at the new levi's stadium. parking may be easier than during past events like last week's international soccer game because more than 6,000 parking
9:16 pm
spots will be available to season ticketholders. that's because great america will be closed. but the park will be holding one event for nearly 2,000 football fans, the red zone rally, an upscale pregame party. >> we're just about sold out for tomorrow. >> reporter: the hilton is also offering a pregame rally in its parking lot. the hotel is sold out for tomorrow thanks to people like tommy redman and his family. >> it's so close, so convenient. so tomorrow when we go to the game just walk to the stadium. >> reporter: the avatar hotel is also sold out tomorrow. and piece of my heart has seen nearly a 30% increase in business since the stadium was built thanks to football fans who come in and grab some beer and a bite to eat before and after the games. another way the stadium is bringing in more dough to local businesses. during preseason santa clara police tweak their traffic plan.
9:17 pm
there were a lot of lessons learned out here. hopefully they will pay off with smoother sailing for fans tomorrow. reporting live in santa clara, marianne, nbc bay area news. >> appropriately enough tomorrow will be the biggest test yet for the valley transportation agency and its game day train service. vta is pulling out all the stops to make sure service goes smoothly tomorrow, that includes adding more trains to serve an expected 10,000 riders. thanks to four test runs with soccer and preseason football, vta says it will be able to handle the load. >> it was definitely a learning experience. but we made some tweaks and those seem to be working for us pretty well so far. >> in the past arrivals have been smooth because they've been spread out over time. the real challenges have come when fans leave all at once in games that went down to the wire. now, people who decide not to use public transportation to get
9:18 pm
to and from levi's stadium, there's a possibility of this, traffic backups. it's been an issue since the first ever event at the new stadium. the san jose earthquakes played a match there. one fan says the traffic was so bad she won't be coming back. >> i would never go to another evening game at levi's stadium. it took about two and a half hours from the time the game got out until we got to our door in los gatos at five to midnight. >> some fans say don't give up. some went to the next big event at levi's stadium came prepared after the sold out match between mexico and chile. they held post game tailgate parties and waited for the traffic to smooth out and get out of their way. >> she had a nightmarish time of it. but before you head out you can check the traffic from your computer. the city of santa clara has a network of live cameras all around the city to check out where you're headed. you can see very little traffic
9:19 pm
on the streets ahead of the game. that makes sense. we'll get a link to the traffic cameras on nbc bay area. that's where you can find them. click on the stadium guide button in the upper right hand corner of the website. parking of course that's no doubt going to be a challenge around levi's stadium tomorrow. one signature vehicle already has its parking spot. nbc's sunday night football bus is now parked outside levi's stadium. our nbc bay area crew caught up to that today and got to take a look inside. check it out. it is stopping at all 17 sunday night football destinations this season. pretty decked out. >> yeah. >> the excitement is building of course for the 49ers home opener tomorrow. that game's against the chicago bears. fans will be treated though with more than just the game. there will be a 30-minute pregame ceremony with v.i.p. guests. as we first told you exclusively yesterday the national anthem will be sung by the lead singer of the band train. the group well-known for performing at san francisco giants games. the special performance will
9:20 pm
start at 5:01 tomorrow. >> 5:01. >> be there. >> like the levi's. >> we will be there. we will all be there. >> 49ers moving from san francisco to santa clara means a lot of big changes for fans. one of the first things they will be noticing will be the heat. >> such a change from candlestick as you might imagine. where it could get down to how cool it can be in the bay it's often about 20 degrees hotter in santa clara. many fans were caught off guard during the preseason game how toasty it was. you know, this was the big complaint, rob, at candlestick how chilly it could get. it could be the opposite here. >> absolutely. early to mid afternoon average highs around candlestick upper 60s and strong ocean air-conditioning and the fox coming in. santa clara temperatures normally low to mid-80s. this game starting closer to 5:00, that may actually provide a little bit of relief as the late-day breeze kicks in. with all the glass and concrete out there that adds some reflective heating closer to ground level. so a feels like temperature on a
9:21 pm
day low to mid-80s feels more like the upper 80s for temperatures. by 3:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon as the sea breeze gets going out of the northwest, that should provide relief on the sun facing side there from the eastern seats looking west we le see that breeze picking up as the game starts. around 5:00 should see temperatures in the low 80s, cooling into the 70s as we head towards 8:00 into the night. so it could have been a little bit hotter. that game started at 1:00, but that 5:00 start time temperatures should be much more comfortable as we drop from the low 80s into the 70s as the game wraps up. back to you. >> thanks very much. heading to the game on sunday and want to know how to get around levi's? the stadium that is. go to nbcbayarea.com and use our stadium guide to let it show you around. >> colorful. >> very helpful. >> indeed. coming up next, another mountain lion sighting in the bay area. >> this one just days after another one was killed. where the wild animal was spotted. and google's testing out its
9:22 pm
driverless car. a new partnership with nasa. and a rare sighting in san francisco when this turtle showed up. it has some people shocked.
9:23 pm
don't wait for awesome... totino's pizza rolls... ...gets you there in just 60 seconds. ahhh! what is it? there are no marshmallows in this box of lucky charms! huh... weird... seriously? what? they're magically delicious
9:24 pm
another mountain lion sighting. comes nearly one week after a 6-year-old boy was attacked by a mountain lion on a hiking trail in cupertino. we're live in san mateo county where we spoke with neighbors and sheriff deputies. christie, that's not the first sighting in that area recently. >> reporter: that's right. just last month there was a sighting a couple miles from here. and then last night a neighbor just down the street from where we're standing reported that there was a mountain lion by his yard. now, there is a lot of open space around here. this is also where there are a number of trails as well. now, a spokesperson for the san
9:25 pm
mateo county sheriff's department says they do get a number of sightings throughout the year all over the county. they respond and try to locate it and then let residents know. this week there was a sighting in san carlos late at night too. this comes on the heels of an unusual attack on a 6-year-old boy who was on a hiking trail in cupertino. after an intense search that animal was located and destroyed. neighbors today say they are more aware since that incident. but in their area here they try to be smart but not alarmed. >> it's a residential area and beautiful area. it just kind of reminds us that we just share the same environment. we just have to be careful. >> there's cause for concern. i would say we always just report so that people are aware that there are sightings. and we always just advise general, you know, good safety behaviors. obviously, you know, if you have small children, pick them up. if you do see a mountain lion,
9:26 pm
don't run away. if it's nearby, make noise and try and make yourself look big. wave your arms around. >> reporter: in the meantime we checked in near cupertino today and the trails had been closed following that attack. but finally reopened. reporting live in san mateo county, christie smith, nbc bay area news. thanks very much. more than a dozen people forced to evacuate a south bay hotel this morning. police and a bomb unit were called to the san jose hilton in downtown this morning. someone reported a suspicious device in the men's bathroom. the bomb unit used a water discharge tool on it. they say it was not explosive but made to look like it was. 20 people in rooms around that bathroom had to be evacuated. the scene was cleared about 5:00 this evening. hotel stayed open during the investigation. people getting ready to hit the roads with the first-ever self-driving car that does not have a backup driver. the new prototype will be tested on the grounds of moffet field.
9:27 pm
nasa's teaming up with google for their own research purposes. they hope they learn from google will help in the twomt of unmanned drones. testing could begin at moffit field early next year. take a look at this. you're not going to see this every day. a pretty unusual catch happened right off the golden gate bridge. a fisherman snagged this rare pacific green sea turtle last weekend. they said it didn't look injured so they set it free. they are enlisted as endangered. a 150-pound reptile far from home, about 2,000 miles away from its normal swimming spots in mexico and galapagos islands. >> great place to visit any time. >> just checking out the bridge like many tourists do. >> absolutely. coming up, talk about sticker shock, levi's stadium has one of the most expensive tickets in the entire nfl. but fans should know before
9:28 pm
shelling out big bucks for one of those tickets. and another nfl star in trouble with the law. this time minnesota viking adrian peterson accused of beating his 4-year-old son. what this means for a league that is already dealing with a huge image issue.
9:29 pm
9:30 pm
well, we are all about this, the new live stadium taking a live look here of course at levi's stadium. >> looks beautiful. >> all lit up. you know, last night i was there doing a story. they have music pumping all the time. so the energy there even if you just sort of drive by, feels like it's full all times. >> there's going to be a traffic jam there tonight because of what you just said. sorry about that. in less than 24 hours there will be a traffic jam. 68,000 people will be filling the stands. >> the average ticket price for 49ers tickets, let's say it's not cheap. >> this sunday's game ranks in the top five for ticket sales on stubhub. we have more on what ticket buyers could expect.
9:31 pm
>> reporter: it's 49ers versus bears and fans are willing to pay big time to get their hands on tickets. >> one of the most expensive this year. that just goes to show the demand for 49ers and the demands to see the new stadium. this is a chance for fans to witness history. >> reporter: according to stubhub the average ticket price is $373, up from the average for the last game at candlestick at $290. and way up from the price to get a seat at cowboys stadium for the opening game there which was $222. and for five of the eight teams visiting levi's this year, the matchup the highest selling away game. the other three have games at the end of the year so could be eight for eight on that. in the days leading up to the game, the prices on the ticket selling site were high roughly $900 in the $500 to $900 range. couple for a few thousand dollars. and $35,000 to $99,000 for one seat, for one game.
9:32 pm
>> stubhub is an open marketplace. we don't set any prices on our own. if someone sets an outrageous price, we're not going to regulate it. but we have a term for outrages prices on stubhub and those are tickets that aren't going to sell. >> reporter: nbc bay area news. >> and of course we are keeping an eye on ticket prices. take a look here at the stubhub website. right now the cheapest ticket we could find would cost you $175. by the way, that ticket doesn't come with a seat. it's for standing room only. the most expensive ticket is nearly $6,000. that's for a single ticket in the v.i.p. section. well, the 49ers have a good chance of beating the bears tomorrow evening. the 49ers are listed as seven-point favorites. chicago was favored by that same amount in their home opener against buffalo. and guess what? they lost. one of the biggest draws for fans the 49ers museum. the niners are among the most historic and accomplished teams in the nfl. they are putting the history on
9:33 pm
display. and you're looking at it. the hall of fame area features life size statues of niners legends. and there are many of them as you know. the game ball from the catch as well as the letter colin kaepernick wrote to himself in the fourth grade predicting he would one day be the quarterback of the 49ers. >> this building is created to serve every type of fan. so if you're someone who likes fine art, we have sculpture. someone who likes technology, we have 14 different interactive exhibits on 40 different screens of every possible size. >> the educational center and classroom for the kids are also a key part of the museum. and it's open every day from 10:00 until 6:00. and you know us here in the media like about this, they didn't leave us out either. take a look at the new media room. it used to be we would squeeze into a side room at candlestick in the locker room. about 505 reporters in a small tight stinky place. let's be honest. here though it's a whole new world. it smells good.
9:34 pm
it's new. the press conference room has more than 100 cushioned seats for media or players when they gather to watch a game film. also there's a stage set up for cameras and a lot of high powered lights to illuminate people like harbaugh or kaepernick when they are being interviewed. less than 24 hours away from levi's stadium debut on the national stage. coverage starts with football night in america at 4:00 p.m. kickoff is at 5:20. following the game check out the second installment of "the faithful." then we're going to have nbc bay area news followed by xfinity sports sunday. big, big, big day tomorrow here on nbc bay area. >> looking forward to it. tomorrow unfortunately another nfl star will not be playing. minnesota vikings adrian peterson turned himself in this morning. peterson was booked and had his mugshot taken. you see here. peterson is now facing a felony charge of injuring a child. in fact, his own son, 4 years old, this is just the latest problem for the nfl and the league is now dealing with
9:35 pm
mounting questions on how they're going to deal with players' behavior. >> reporter: adrian peterson, six-time pro-bowl player voted mvp for the nfl in 2012, will not be on the field sunday. the star running back for the minnesota vikings turned himself in to texas authorities early saturday morning after he was indicted on one count of injury to a child with reckless or criminal negligence. he was released after posting a $15,000 bond. his attorney issued a statement friday saying peterson used a switch to spank his 4-year-old son using "the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in east texas." the statement also said "adrian never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury." >> a grand jury having indicted this case looked at the injuries that were inflicted upon this child and determined that that discipline was not reasonable. >> reporter: peterson's indictment comes at the end of a week where the nfl found hits mired once again in controversy over new questions about its
9:36 pm
handling of the ray rice domestic abuse incident captured in this video released by tmz sports. a source close to rice tells nbc news that during his june meeting with nfl commissioner roger goodell rice clearly described hitting his then-fiancee. but in this suspension letter from goodell to rice obtained by nbc news, goodell wrote, the video shows a starkly different sequence of events. >> now cast out on the way the nfl has handled a whole number of issues. >> reporter: doubts that continue to mount for the most lucrative sports league in america ahead of its second sunday of regular season. >> the national football league players have agreed to a new drug policy that will shorten terms for some current suspended players. the new agreement has a provision in it for human growth hormone, a performance enhancing drug not part of the old policy. the rules about some other drugs have changed and that includes a higher threshold for a failed
9:37 pm
marijuana test. some players now suspended for marijuana use are expected to have their suspensions lowered, that includes cleveland's josh gordon whose current year-long suspension may be cut back to just ten games. now to a developing story on a massive manhunt for a cop killer in pennsylvania. police from at least three states are looking for the gunman who ambushed a pennsylvania police barracks. authorities say the shooting happened during a late-night shift change last night. one trooper was killed, another was injured. corporal bryon dixon died at the scene, trooper rushed into surgery in critical but stable condition. the community is in shock. >> it's a cowardly attack. it's an attack upon all of us in society and the people of pennsylvania. when people attack law enforcement in this cowardly way. >> an award of $20,000 -- a reward of $20,000 has been offered for any information that leads to an arrest or conviction. several people were questioned
9:38 pm
but officials say there's still no suspect. and we are following another developing story tonight. isis, the militant extremist group that recently executed two american journalists, has released a new video tonight purportedly showing yet another execution, this time a british citizen david haines. nbc's richard engel reports tonight from iraq. >> reporter: social media websites often used by isis have released a new video. and it appears to show the beheading of a british aid worker, david hawthorne haines. he appears in the video. he's reading a statement. and it looks like so many of the other videos that we've seen just like it. he's dressed in orange, a militant wearing a ski mask is standing next to him. the militants appear to be egging on the united states and great britain to get involved in this fight. the united states is currently trying to build a coalition against isis. and isis apparently feels that it can survive air strikes.
9:39 pm
that there is not an effective ground force that can -- and isis gave a lot of prestige by picking a fight with the united states, picking a fight with the superpower. just a few months ago isis was a relatively small, not very well-known group. now it has a global brand. it attracts recruits. a few years ago militants aspiring terrorists wanted to associate themselves with al qaeda. now many of them have ditched al qaeda and they want to be like isis. richard engel, nbc news, irbil, iraq. rescue teams have called off the search for a california-based navy pilot involved in a crash in the pacific. two f-18 hornet jets were attached to the u.s.s. carl vincent. they collided yesterday about 2,300 miles west of hawaii. the pilots each members of a wing based in the san joaquin
9:40 pm
valley. coming up -- >> they can put a drive in the ground today and teach those people something. >> the power of a lawn ornament. >> the bay area family fighting back after suffering an unimaginable tragedy. and the dragon flies at the center of their fight.
9:41 pm
9:42 pm
we have a story tonight of promises made and promises kept. >> a follow-up story we first brought you in february about a gilroy family's ability to think of others during their darkest hour. nbc's bay area garvin thomas has some of tonight's bay area proud. >> that dark time for the family of gilroy was the death of their 6-year-old daughter. it has been just seven months since they lost her. their grief is of course still strong. but willingness to help others it turns out may be just as strong. some promises are easy to make.
9:43 pm
