a live look at levi stadium. it's the dawn of a new era for the 49ers and the city of santa clara. in less than an hour the 49ers will be breaking in their new home. good morning. >> it was a long two-year journey to get to this point. by all accounts construction moved at a rapid pace. ground first broke on april 19th, 2012. a few months later crews installed the first steel beams. the crews installed if first

seat and finally on july 17th, 2014, the stadium officially opened. >> now we're here. we're here and we can also add september 14th to that list of milestones, the 49ers home opener. >> cheryl hurd is live outside the stadium with what fans need to know. >> reporter: good morning. the sun is rising and there's already a lot of activity here. tv crews are setting up along with the staff. fans are probably getting some much needed rest before tonight's game. the new stadium gets the first real test today and it's toughest challenge is getting here. some 70,000 fans and some 4,000 stadium workers have to get to and from the game. there have been four sporting events here so far to soccer matches and two nfl frks lrkfl.

the results have been mixed. officials are optimistic. >> our first event was a learning experience. didn't go quite as well as we hoped. we made some tweaks. it seems to be working pretty well so far. >> reporter: traffic, traffic, traffic has been the big story here in santa clara. 49er officials controlled traffic around the stadium. they have some adjustments to make. they have a lot of adjustments to contend with. they're going to put up more electronic boards, adding trains. people are pretty nervous about getting to and from the game. last night i was at dinner and that's all people were talking about. the traffic get here. bottom line is get here early and try and stay and enjoy the experience. i'm going to tell you a lot more about what you can expect as far as tailgating and the experience inside the stadium coming up a little later in the newscast. reporting live in santa clara, i'm cheryl hurd.

>> a lot of tips on nbcbayarea.com as well. one thing people were running into bringing bags. you can only bring in the big clear bags. women with the purses over the clutch size had to go back to the car or send their husband back to the car. >> good advice. we don't want to put the husbands in a bad spot. today's game will have a ripple effect throughout the south bay at the cal station. police are advising drivers to expect heavy traffic starting around noon. this has many folks take the train to levi stadium hours ahead of the 5:30 start. parking prices are expected to be substantially higher. vegas is favoring the 9ers to win the game. >> some players are still getting acclimated to their new

home. kicker phil dawson said he's only been able to kick on the field a couple of times. he says the wind happens to gust around 1:30 which is right around most game times. >> it will be no wind, perfect. you wait for kickoff and it's completely different. >> when asked if the sun was a problem he said he played in cleveland for a long time when the sun rarely comes out. he'll take all the sun he can get. >> we heard from dawson there. game day conditions could play a role in this contest. >> good morning, anthony. >> good morning to you both. what we're looking at this sunday is very warm temperatures. i was looking back at what it's usually like at candle stick and in san francisco temperatures are about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than what they'll be for

today. keep that in mind it's going to be warm. up to 84 degrees around 3:00. around game time temperatures are expected to come down a bit and that's the on shore wind that starts to inendate the south bay and you start to goat the gusty wind as the air starts to mix out. by the evening hours temperatures become more tolerable. drink plenty of water today because even though we're only going to be in the lower to mid-80s, the isolated heat effect really creates a bit of a heat index in the stadium because you have the concrete and the plastic and all that absorbs heat. the other thing to note, try to wear light colored clothing. temperatures very warm. not as hot as it was yesterday. 83 in the south bay. 76 in the peninsula. east shore you'll be at 76. we've been telling you all about the chance of our first rain of the season. we'll detail that and warning if you're heading to those area

beaches. we'll talk about that in the next report. >> the 49ers game will air right here. coverage starts at 4:00 with football night in america. kickoff is at 5:20. following the game check out the second installment of the face bowl and we'll have nbc bay area news followed by xfinity sports sunday. a family gathering ends with several people injured after a deck collapsed at an east bay home. this happened around 7:00 last night. 12 people were on that balcony when it gave way. at least nine of them were injured. three suffered critical injuries including broken legs. none of the injuries are considered life threatening. crash on the peninsula takes the life of an 11-year-old child last night. officers were called out to the crash scene just before 1:00 a.m. when officers arrived they found

two people who had survived the crash at the bottom of an embankment where the driver veered off the road. inside the car an 11-year-old with fatal injuries. the chp says the collision is under investigation but does not appear drugs or alcohol are a factor. one person has died this morning, breaking news to bring to you after an encounter with a police officer. the shooting happened inside uncle sams liquor and deli in richmond. police are saying little right now about what led up to this shooting. the officer was not injured but as in protocol in these situations the officer is on paid administrative leave. more details now. this is the first deadly officer involved shooting in more than 7 years. a recent report found that the last deadly shooting involving a richmond police officer happened back in 2007. paper says it's since then the department has averaged just one officer involved shooting per

san francisco just down the road, a live look at levi stadium. the lead singer of the band will be performing the national anthem at tonight's game. that little tidbit leaked exclusively to today in the bay earlier this week. today is the 200th anniversary of the national anthem. what's not going to put you in a good mood is parking

issues. those just some of the often heard complaints about levi stadium since it opened. >> those are all annoying things. no complaints from the hotels, restaurants or other nearby businesses. they are big fans and they can't wait for the home opener against the 49ers. marion has more about booming business. >> reporter: at pizza my heart it's pasta which is better. big crowds pouring in before the game. business is up nearly 30%. >> on game days we've been seeing a lot more flow earlier and later. we've been open an hour earlier and staying an hour later. >> reporter: hotels are also seeing a spike in business.

>> i've never been just passing through. normally we go san francisco for the games just kind of checking out the area. >> reporter: there will be plenty to check out including this pre-rally or the upscale red zone rally at great america which includes a roller coaster ride. it's almost sold out. >> we'll probably be in the neighborhood of 1500 to a couple thousand guests. >> reporter: because great america will g closed during season home games more than 6,000 parking spots will be available to 9ers season ticket holders. nearly 70,000 fans embrace the new stadium, area hotels and restaurants are already savoring the business food. >> we heard the reference to great america. in a few minutes we'll have an interview on the impact of that park. the most elaborate tailgate party in town.

what your game day forecast looks like. let's bring in anthony slaughter now. >> temperatures are expected to be back into the mid-80s. i want to give you a bit of an idea of what the entire bay will look like. we have a risk for increased rip current. if you're headed to some of the beaches it's very warm yesterday. keep that in mind. we're talking about threat for increased rip current. the afternoon temperature already not be as warm. that's the good news. we're talking about temps two to five degrees cooler. the best news ever. aside from the home opener we're tracking our first rain of the season. this is really excellent news. 61 in livermore. overnight that deck of cloud cover moved over. it's our time lapse. you can see the fog lowered. it will be a slow clearing process. the on shore push was strong

overnight. not as hot. the pen niinsula you'll be up t 76. not near 100s like yesterday. closer to 93. as we were telling you about first chance of rain in our forecast this upcoming week we have two systems we're keeping an eye on. the first is a hurricane down in the cabo area near the baja of california. that's going to weaken to a tropical storm later on. this is very typical we see the storm door start to open and start to sag a bit closer to the bay area. look what happens on tuesday. this plume of moisture really starts to tap into this cold front. notice the tropical storm down there. look what happens on wednesday. this plume of moisture is very close to us. like we were talking yesterday computer models are not gospel. really the thing that we have to do is pick which one is the most

incorrect and we have to make a determination on where this rain will be. you can see the rain very close. about 20 to 25 miles off the coast. again, with the computer model update, this could be right over us tomorrow or it could be further out into the ocean. the other thing to keep in mind tropical storm to our south that's expected to get spread this way. both of those chances of rain will be better promising chance for showers. we're talking yesterday about how important it is to watch the forecast each and every day because it gets updated. now we're talking about our next chance of rain. we'll see this one come in this upcoming week. another shot as we head through the first week of october. this is really looking good and makes us happy in the weather department. it alleviates our drought problems so you don't have to worry about taking the shorter showers. back to you. the fact an aid worker was taken, held and brutally

4:00 p.m. check out the second installment of the faithful and then we'll have nbc bay area news. the heat is definitely on nfl commissioner roger goodell. there's a new call for his ouster. the group said it's time for his to resign. e with take this seriously. the nfl does not allow planes to fly over stadiums one hour prior to game time. the group says the planes will fly for two hours prior to the no-fly restrictions.

over the weekend most recently minnesota star running back adrian peterson turned himself into to police. prosecutors say it was discipline that went too far with his son. peterson will not play in today's game against the patriots. panther's defensive end greg hardy will be playing despite he's been convicted for assaulting a woman, his ex-girlfriend. he's appealing the verdict but he's not been suspended by the nfl or the panthers. the league is waiting to see what happens with his appeal case. the 49ers ray mcdonald is facing felony abuse charges. he also will be playing for the 49ers. heefs supposed to appear in front of a judge tomorrow but the hearing has been postponed. the 49ers are waiting for the due process to play out before the team decides whether or not to suspend him. people in a peninsula neighborhood are trying to stay

calm after hearing about another mountain lion sighting. it comes days after wardens track down the animal that slashed a 6-year-old boy. after an intense search that animal was killed. there was another sighting just last month. neighbors say they try to be smart but careful. >> it's a beautiful area. just kind of reminds us that we share the same environment. we just have to be careful. >> a spokesperson for the san mateo sheriff's department says the sightings are not cause for concern but they remind people to be aware of their surroundings and take safety measures for their children and their pets. 7:38 on your sunday morning. next, we take you behind the scenes at levi stadium. a look at the place you'll not get to see on a guided tour.

you could run into a rip current. temperatures won't be as warm about two to five degrees cooler. then that sets the stage for cooling more. our first chance of rain pushes in as we head toward midweek. right now temperatures in the 50s and 60s. 61 in livermore. yesterday they were at 65 degrees. that's a good sign we'll be cooler for today. 60 in san francisco. 72 in san francisco. east shore at 74. tri-valley you're near 100 yesterday. still very warm. 76 in the peninsula. 83 for the south bay. you can see we're already starting to clear out from our inland valleys. tri-valley looking at sunshine. if you're looking for things today maybe you'll want to get into san francisco. the 34th annual come day day in the park. it's expected to have over 40 comedians. that will be a good time. temperatures in the lower to

mid-70s. i want to set you up with what's going to be happening wednesday morning. look how intense this will be. this is off across portions of the pacific. as it moves this way the computer model wants to weaken it a whole lot. you'll notice this thin band of cloud cover that extends all the way down. that's the cold front. it's going the hold together. as this cold front pushes in, while we won't see a widespread event we'll squeeze a few showers out of this and you can see the showers are expected to linger. while we get a few morning showers for thursday we may get a few more showers on friday. now the computer model of things we may get a couple of days, i think it will be morning drizzle and morning fog and burn out of here as we head toward the afternoon hours. the thing to keep this mind as we head toward the next couple of weeks we're just getting going. the first official day of fall kicks off on september 22nd and then once we get into the next few weeks after that october 3rd and 6th looks like we have a

fire. it's already blackened more than 1600 acres thus far. near triple digit heat are keeping firefighters from being able to gain control of that blaze. about 30 homes were forced to evacuate. fire crews are beginning to mop up after battling another wildfire. this one in nevada county thanks to an aggressive aerial attack dropping water on ta blaze. crews stopped the fire from moving forward from within a few hours. the 9ers not the only one holding their opener. don't forget about the raiders. details coming up. ...we need to break up.
