right now. it is moving up mexico's baja peninsula. earlier the cat 3 storm battered cabo san lucas. the tourist spot was whacked by 115-mile-per-hour winds. yes. stay inside. nowhere to escape the storm's fury. one tourist was recording video when the hotel was hit. the fallout from odile could be big. up to 5 to 10 inches of rain, dangerous storm surges and then this. humongous waves triggering flash flooding. so when will odile weaken? meteorologist bill karins will be here in a few minutes with more information on that. leaders from more than 30 countries will be in paris today to discuss the strategy to defeat the terror group isis. ahead of the meeting, the president of iraq told the associated press it is not necessary for egypt, the united arab emirates and saudi arabia to participate in air strikes on

iraqi territory. today's summit comes two days after isis released a new video purportedly showing the execution of british aid worker david haines. prime minister david cameron announced britain will support the u.s. in the fight against isis, but will not be sending in ground troops. isis, meanwhile, earning more than $3 million each day through oil smuggling, extortion and human trafficking according to u.s. intelligence officials. nbc's tracie potts is in washington for us. tracie, good morning to you. what is expected to come of this meeting in paris, if anything? >> reporter: likely a lot of pressure from the united states, for other countries to join in. the air campaign and on the ground, great britain already said they're not sending in ground troops and not helping out with fighter jets, neither is germany, italy, france and australia said they'll help out. but the question remains, will arab countries or others send in ground troops or somehow help out with this ground effort against isis. the obama plan, to defeat isis,

train the iraqis, air strikes in syria and build a coalition. >> i think the plan has a great potential to work. >> reporter: australia says they'll help with air strikes, but germany, britain and italy will not. and who is going to fight isis on the ground? >> countries are saying they're ready to do that. the prince of jordan just two days ago said he's ready today to put his troops into syria to fight isis. >> we have countries in this region, countries outside of this region, in addition to the united states, all of whom are prepared to engage in military assistance. >> reporter: the public is skeptical. in our latest nbc/wall street/annenberg poll, six in ten americans back the idea of going after isis in syria, but near areally 70% don't think it work. >> our strategy will fail yet again. this president needs to rise to

the occasion before we all get killed back here at home. >> reporter: the announcement this weekend of a third westerner beheaded, a british aid worker, is making the situation even more urgent. and so a big part of that meeting in paris today with secretary kerry is going to be nailing down some of these countries, richard, on what they're willing to do to help. >> tracie potts live for us there in washington, d.c. thank you so much for that, tracie. the pennsylvania state trooper injured in an ambush on friday is reportedly conscious for the first time since the attack. state police are hoping to speak with trooper alex douglas to get more information about the ambush. another trooper, corporal bryon dickson, was killed in that attack. investigators continue to search the area where the ambush took place. a nonprofit group is now offering a $50,000 award for information leading to the arrest of the shooter there. nfl bad boy ray rice, he wants back in. he will appeal his indefinite suspension later today. it comes as adrian peterson

broke his silence, facing child abuse charges, he took to twitter quoting the bible. here is nbc's brian mooar. >> reporter: with the football world still debating the nfl's suspension of former baltimore ravens running back ray rice for beating the woman he later married, the carolina panthers booted greg hardy from the team's home opener, months after he was charged with assaulting and threatening his ex-girlfriend. >> he shouldn't be playing. take responsibility for your actions. >> reporter: carolina coach juan rivera made the final call. >> this is a very difficult situation that the league is dealing with right now. teams are dealing with and we're doing the best we can, okay. we're not infallible. we make mistakes. >> reporter: a women's advocacy group hired banner planes to fly over several nfl stadiums, calling for the resignation of nfl commissioner roger goodell and demanding the league go beyond suspension. >> what we need to see nfl do now is not only enforce this policy, but also stretch it to invest in women's groups that are supporting as survivors of

domestic violence. >> reporter: also suspended, adrian peterson. he was arrested on child abuse charges for allegedly striking his 4-year-old son several times with a tree branch. meanwhile, in san francisco, ray mcdonnell took to the field two weeks after being arrested for domestic abuse. he has not been charged. for the nfl, week two of a season clouded by controversy. brian mooar, nbc news. damaged, but not down and out. that was hall of fame golfer greg norman's message to fans on instagram after getting in a chainsaw accident. from his hospital bed, the two-time british open champion called himself one lucky man and jokingly said he still had his left hand. you see, the very next morning norman posted this picture thanking his supporters and saying here i am at the scene of the crime with my new fashion statement. nor aremman was cutting back trn

his florida home when the weight of a branch turned his head toward his chainsaw. he cut his wrist, missing an artery by a fraction of an inch. he could have lost his hand had the chainsaw been running at full speed. good thing that didn't happen. parts of california burning, crews are battling several wildfires in silverado canyon. no more mandatory evacuations and the fire is 50% contained. the bad news, 1500 acres have been burned so far. in northern california, two new fires flared up, one 60 miles east of sacramento, the other near yosemite national park. both forcing evacuations and barely contained. across the country, fires torched 2.8 million acres, half the size of new jersey. bill karins joins us now. bill, you know, i was in california over the last three days, and the heat was up there. all the reporters were getting the call, be ready. you might have to get out there to report on the -- >> yeah. what is interesting, we had this fire we have to report on. as a whole, we vice president

h -- haven't had the acreage burn. we have been lucky. let's look and show you what happened last night. of course, in cabo san lucas, that was really who took the brunt of the storm. it is still dark there. communications are very difficult in and out of the area. and, of course, when the sun comes up, we start to get the reports in, we show them to you, but it is going to be a devastating blow by all accounts. it was hit extremely hard. as far as what happened, it was about 9:45 p.m. west coast time, category 3, 125-mile-per-hour winds and the eye went right over cabo san lucas. they got the brunt of the storm. and as you can see, a wider shot of it, this storm will slowly weaken as it heads to the north. this is the official forecast from the national hurricane center. it should be this high. tomorrow, still be a category 1 hurricane. will do some damage along its path. the most extreme damages already taking place and that was right in the cabo area. the other question, how much rain will fall from this in the desert southwest. some moisture will get picked up into arizona and new mexico.
