you're watching "today in the bay." >> a good monday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon this morning. 880 now a parking lot in both directions in san leandro. it started with a fiery crash that ultimately involved nearly a dozen vehicles. the closure has 880 completely closed from marina boulevard to washington avenue. >> stephanie strong has been talking to drivers as they wait for the c had much been. >> it was just after 3:00 when an suv reportedly t-boned a semi. it crushed through the central divider where you see it rested in just the last half hour.

the tow truck has been positioning itself to it looks like getting ready to take the big rig away. the latest it nine victims were it and to pt she was on meyer r of a. people we spoke with out here there. we saw them help with triage, we saw them try to rescue people from cars. spoke with people who described the chaotic scene as crews tried very hard to help the victims. >> i saw one ambulance drive up to it and they took somebody out of the ambulance and put him in the chopper and he took off. they had somebodyeach one of

thome. >> and we've seen a street sweeper come up and try to clean up 880 and fix that central divider before allowing any of these lanes back open. we understand some of the northbound lanes were coated in oil so they're taking every precaution. the northbound lanes may be shut down for one and a half to two 30 minutes the next hour. it's been fairly had he taken, the folks out here are stuck between washington and marina. they've been here since 3:10 and

they are bracing for a stolong . back to you. >> mike, hopefully some these lanes open can unjam this a bit. >> we're hoping, hoping. this is the impact it's having on southbound traffic. it is jammed up solid heading to the area. what this means is it will send more people to city streets. if you're heading to the oakland airport this morning, 98 might be your alternate to get out of the area, taking san leandro street over to the area. that surface street traffic will build and that's going to add to the congestion for folks trying

to get over here to the airport. westbound 580 is jammed up coming out the castro and you are going to see big rigs on 580, they allowed there. hayward/san leandro is going to be a horrible area to be in, very tough. we do have a fast lane at vargas blocked. this is unrelated to the other crash. i got to give you a look at the rest of your crash right now. everything south thereof looks standard for your morning commute. the bay bridge toll plaza does have the metering lights on. we do have the backup for all of these lanes. we may see more traffic because members of congress can't get to the san mateo bridge so they'll

come up to 580 and add to the traffic. >> thanks, mike. now for the developing story over our water along the pacific coastline. residents in cabo san lucas are taking shelter trying to ride out hurricane odile. mexican authorities say more than 30,000 people were told to leave their homes for shelters as odile approached. meteorologist rob mayeda is tracking the hurricane. we're waiting to see if we'll get any of that moisture. >> we're seeing it down to a category 2, down to 110 miles per hour, down from 125 earlier. eventually this weakens to a remnant low in the gulf of california. notice southern california and southern arizona. tuesday into wednesday, we'll begin to see the ways heading

into wednesday and or fre. >> take a look at this map. there are three wildfires already burning, at least ten homes. the largest of those blazes started yesterday at bass lake. more than a thousand people were initially evacuated. hundreds are still out of their homes this morning. this is in the same area where the juncture fire just burned eight homes last month. so far the fire has burned more than 300 acres. >> story lines abound now in the nfl. here's one of them. we're still waiting to find out

when 49ers player ray mcdonald will appear in court on felony domestic violence charges. the santa clara county d.a. has postponed his arraignment. they say they want more time to review his case. mcdonald has been allowed to kin playing now. mcdonald as bo not on did the team end up losing to the chicago bears, but thousands of fans said they spent literally hours trying to get out of the stadium parking lot. >> on a cool night, on a work night, not everybody was able to play by the rules, finding their way out of the parking lot. we have more with the traffic troubles and maybe what's ahead for the next time. >> reporter: good morning to you. the fans already frustrated from the loss to the bears yesterday, coming out to what was a parking

lot in a parking lot. the problem was that all of those cars were in drive and they were ready to leave. we're going to pan over and show you where some of those people made their own exit, along this grass here. mostly people with suvs who decided to take the risk, jumping over the grass and sidewalk, simply fed up with waiting, what was described to us as two hours, sometimes three hours to leave here. there were very few traffic directing staff to let people know where to go and keep things in order. >> it's really frustrating. we lost the game and now we're sitting in the parking lot and we were here over 45 minutes. >> they have no pedestrian walkways. people are darting in and out of traffic over there. we almost got hit on the way out. >> and the niners had told us

previously they expected the last car to leave here from levi somewhere around 90 minutes after the event had taken place. they had spent a lot of time tweaking their traffic plan for the arrival of fans at the beginning of those events. they were asking people to get here early. the problem is everybody wanted to stay till the end of the game and they wanted to leave at the same time. many took vta and that was probably the best bet. according to game staff, that is what is recommended. we will have to see exactly what happens in the days to come and in the events to come as we come back out here live as to what indeed those niners staff and santa clara city staff down to tweak the process of getting everyone out of the stadium. for now we're live. i'm derek shore, "today in the bay." >> 6:10 on your monday with a

live picture of the bay bridge. let's find out what's in store for weather with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> on the left side of the screen, a sunrise for you. cooler closer to san rafael and santa rosa this morning, we're seeing 55 degrees and some of that fog or low cloud cover at least over san francisco right now, you'll see temperatures now in the upper 60s and 80s. low clouds over towards oakland. patches of low clouds there on the coast. that is a staple on the forecast which looks mostly mild for now. enough of a sea breeze. when we say warm valleys, we're not talking upper 90s, rather mid 80s for most of us. and then we're watching two sources of moisture.

completed shuttered this morning. we are hopeful some of the southbound lanes might be opening soon. for the latest let's check in with mike inouye. >> folks, this is why we're hoping, just hoping, they'll have a couple of lanes open in the next couple minutes. traffic is stacked up solid. they're heading down in toward the area where our map will take you over and that's where the crash continues in both directions of the 80 block. northbound you're forced off at washington street. folks traveling north here, there's a stall at 238 northbound as folks are coming off the castro valley y and into this jam and folks are trying to use 580 to get out of this. you're going to want to consider that route, that's pretty much the only one flowing now.

the anymore it's instead, we're tracking this jam and now hayward is starting to see many of the effects as well as folks try to make their way over to international. this will cause a big stir through the entire area. we're looking at the northbound side looking at the 7:00, possibly 8:00 hour. this jam at the fast lane backs you up. a live look at san jose shows the south bay flowing very smoothly. this is what you'd expect to see. the high rise does see a pretty steady flow of traffic, nothing really unusual. i was concerned as it might send folks over to avoid the oakland

area and over to the oakland area and. >> and the type lapse is showing you the low clouds hanging over downtown san francisco. that's part of our weather story today. mostly mild for now and a sea breeze which will keep inland temperatures at least short t m term -- at least short term no moisture from hurricane odile making its way toward the bay area. that could be a little different story in southern california next couple of days. right now category 2 hurricane. that will continue to weaken as it moves up the baja peninsula and then a lot of information. that is one source we we had

this is an area close enough to the north bay where we could see moisture at times and that moisture from hurricane odile likely will stay in southern arizona and northern california. the temperatures short term, fairly mild through the middle part of the week and numbers jump as we head toward friday. san francisco in the upper 60s. into are the north baying you'll see highs in the low 80s. notice for santa rosa especially as we head toward thursday more clouds and livermore, a slight chance of hours and temperatures

you can say this central coast surfer was swimming for his life. he was attacked by a 15-foot shark. >> he said the shark knocked him off his surf board mid-wave and came up out of the wave, landing on his board, splitting it in two and then took a bite out of his board. >> came up out of the air about 15 feet and then i looked down and saw a shark, rolled on to my board and took a bite on the way down. >> browning says he was still tethered to that surf board when the shark began to pull deeper,

see flames pouring out of a car there. that accident sent nine people to the hospital this morning. an suv t-boned a big rig, which smashed through the central divider of the highway, striking several other cars along the way, causing one of them to burst into flames. at least two people were airlifted from that scene for medical attention. we're going to take a live look now from our helicopter as you can see the chp hoping to be able to open up some of the lanes on the southbound side of things in a matter of minutes now. we'll have an update in a few minutes. >> a new poll shows the majority of americans are backing president obama's plan to defeat the terrorist group isis, however, they're not necessarily convinced it will work. tracie potts joins us. a marriage of other nations are

on board and that was a linchpin of the strategy. >> exactly. they have to figure out who is going to have the boots on the ground. if it's not going to be the united states or great britain, then who is going to be on the ground to fight isis? we know that air strikes are still a possibility and the french and australians have said they'll help with that after some other key partners said they are not interested in sending their planes to syria. but now the question, can we arm the rebels or can we get other country, even some of the arab countries in the region to send their military to fight this fight on the ground because air power alone won't do it. it's one of the reasons why secretary of state john kerry is in paris today meeting with more than 30 nations to try to come up with a strategy. meantime that poll that you talked about, found just over 6 in 10 americans said, yes, we should be taking action in syria

but almost 7 in 10 say they just don't think it's going to work. >> thank you, tracie. >> we take a look at the mess this morning, between san leandro and hayward, it's been shut down for hours. police are saying it was actually t-boned by an suv first, the concrete spilling into both lanes, commuters have been wrangled this morning just waiting to get through. let's check in with mike inouye. >> we are looking at that huge jam. i believe this is northbound 880 heading up into the area as we're looking at traffic coming up into the area. these folks are getting off at washington street. between here and marina boulevard there is that closure for the nimitz freeway. our camera there points you to

the south. this is where the traffic jam starts over here, as far north as 66. marina boulevard is where these folks are forced out to the roadway. we're talking about the hope in the next few minutes we'll have one, maybe two of those southbound lanes clearing. for folks heading to the airport, you're going to have to take 580 over there and take that very jammed surface path over toward oakland. very tough drive north of hayward into oakland. over here an earlier crash at vargas. those look like they have both cleared from the roadway. there's your typical build coming into the area for west 580. a quick look at the south bay. nothing unusual for san jose. traffic starting to build from 101 to 87 into downtown.

a lot of folks might be taking the san mateo bridge over to the peninsula and normally might have taken the bay bridge. so far highway 92 looks pretty standard. how does the forecast look for the day? >> clear skies around san jose but low fog playing flights into s.f.o. we will see the drizzle on the coast break up the patchy low clouds and patchy low clouds during the day, temperatures running fairly mild. by wednesday night and thursday, we'll watch this weather system offshore, which will tap into the moisture north of hawaii as they head to early thursday. meantime remnant moisture from hurricane odile likely staying in southern california. mid 80s towards saratoga, los gatos seeing mild temperatures

a new york city subway tunnel severely damaged by hurricane sandy nearly two years ago is finally reopening this morning. the montague tunnel connects brooklyn and lower manhattan but has been out of service since 2012.

just about an hour and a half ago service on the train was restored. hurricane sandy flooded that tunnel with sea water and that tunnel destroyed just about everything inside and crews have been working ever since trying to drain it and fix it. >> we installed a completely new signal system and more than three miles of tunnel lighting. we replaced sump stations, pumps and track switches. >> crews made upgraded to the circuit system which was protected with a water proof door. >> elizabeth keefe was visiting manhattan on 9/11 when she found this photo. she tried posting it to find the owner. fred says everybody in the photo is alive and well. elizabeth and fred are set to meet today so she can finally

of continuous news, weather and traffic on "today in the bay." >> the latest on the breaking story we've been following since 3:10 this morning. 880 a parking lot after a fiery crash that shut down both sides of the freeway for hours. that involved nearly a dozen people and a dozen vehicles. >> that's where we find stephanie chuang, who has been talking to drivers, who are simply stuck. we understand that actually the chp is saying it might open those southbound lanes soon? >> reporter: that's the good news this morning. the northbound lane is not opening until after 8:00. but you can see here in the last minute and a half, two minutes, the southbound lanes reopened, traffic now finally moving again. this is southbound here around marina boulevard. only one lane still remaining closed as they fix the central

divide. we learned there are reports that this all began with a car that fled the scene here later found in dublin abandon. we asked the public information officer who would only say that's under investigation. now this all led to a big rig crash through the central divide starting a chain reaction involving 10 to 12 vehicles that happened just after 3:00 this morning, leading to at least nine victims taken to the hospital, three with critical injuries. at least one car was on fire after it crashed into the central divide and burst into flame. multiple vehicles badly wrecked from the crashes. first responders working hard to rescue people from their vehicles. many ambulances zooming by to take other victims to hospital. we talked to people who missed the accident by mere minutes. >> me and my uncle were talking

about that. if he picked me up five minutes earlier, we could have either been in the accident or been one of the eyewitnesses of the accidents. yeah, really kind of scary thinking about it. >> reporter: cal tran has been out all morning sweeping up the debris from the central divide and some of the northbound lanes were coated in oil so they were taking all precautions. southbound lanes all open except for one as they continue to work to fix that central divide. we also spoke with a man out here who said he is the co-worker of the big rig driver who was able to walk away okay. there's still a lot of concern for the folks out here. the on group of people still waiting to move, those trying to go northbound who were stuck and got here too soon to be

diverted. >> thank you very much, steph. >> we'll be keeping a close eye on the status of the victims of that crash. first, though, many folks, mike game planning alternates. what do you suggest? >> the southbound sides have reopened. so southbound 880 coming out of oakland you're going to deal with this. the clean-up on the northbound side is not the issue for the southbound side. as we look at southbound, this is the jam from the 66 -- from high street now jammed solid past the coliseum, all the way past as far as the eye can see to marina boulevard where they just opened four out of the five lanes. folks will slow down to see all the clean-up activity going on on the northbound side.

over here southbound i would say stick it out if you can. there is a good amount of mileage you have to take through those city streets. you might want to stick it out for 880. but this is the beginning and the brunt of the morning commute. northbound we the have full closure win continues northbound to 238. westbound 580 unusually heavy out of castro valley and coming out of this scene. nonetheless i would encourage you if you're choosing between the two routes to do that. the san mateo bridge, we see a good slowdown. but we are looking at a standard flow for 92 and south of the san mateo, looking pretty standard.

four lanes southbound open for 880. northbound still closed. >> thousands of residents and tourists in mexico's cabo san lucas are trying to ride out the storm packing 125 mile-an-hour winds. mexican authorities advised people to leave their home as the storm approached. >> several wildfires across california burned several homes and show no signs of letting up. look at this map. there are three wildfires already burning and at least ten homes are lost. the largest of the blazing began yesterday afternoon near bass lake in the sierra national forest. more than a thousand people were evacuated initially and hundreds of them are still out of their

homes this morning. this is in the same area where the junction fire burned just last month. that fire has burned more than 300 acres so far. >> it's 6:50 on your monday. we'll take a quick peek outside at downtown san jose. we know right now that conditions are dry. we're seeing fires pop up all over the place, but rain, is it coming soon? we're hoping to start the week off on a good note here, rob. >> it should head out toward the sierra foot hills, too. we'll see cooler temperatures and have a chance of seeing a few showers as we head toward the middle part of the week. san francisco looking fairly foggy there. some patchy low clouds now getting into san jose as we show you this view here, which looks mostly cloudy around other parts of the bay area. we're seeing clear skies at times toward the south bay. low clouds across the central

bay and coast. those will retreat back to the coastline as it goes through the rest of the morning into the afternoon with mostly mild temperatures for now, all day sea breeze keeping inland temperatures unlike last week which were soaring up near the upper 90s. you notice some high cloud there. that's upper level moisture, which will be streaming away from hurricane odile, still a category 2 hurricane right now. this storm will weaken and become a tropical storm by tuesday but some of that moisture will filter in to southern california and southern arizona. it looks like towards witness and thursday, there's another system to the west, which will bring us some showers. most of the tropical moisture from odile stays down in southern arizona and southern california. that's the change we see coming up in the middle of the week.

san francisco upper 60s. and the 49ers will be on the road, the game up in glen dale, arizona, where they'll see 97 degrees outside. of course they have a dorm. >> rob, speaking of the 49ers, we are still waiting to find out when ray mcdonald will appear in court on felony domestic violence charges. santa clara district attorney has postponed his arraignment for today because they say they want more time to review the case. he was arrested two weeks ago but has been allowed to play. they say they will not deactivate him unless he is convicted. >> and two tackles in a game that most niner fans would like to forget.

not only did the team end up losing to the dreaded chicago bears, but thousands of frustrated fans here then spent hours trying to get out of the parking lot. >> some broke the rules to try to find a way out of the parking lot. it was a school night and a work night. why were the traffic troubles so bad, derek? >> reporter: it was one of the parking lots that a number people say they simply couldn't find the exit to and if they couldn't, they couldn't get to it, frustrating the fans. as people tried to leave, they say it was complete gridlock. contributing to that was a lack of signage. some people unable to find the exit, instead making their own,

jumping the curb and sidewalk, which is not safe with pedestrians in the area. drivers say they waited up to three hours with few parking attendants to help them out. >> this is the worst. there's no direction, no signs. no one directing any traffic. >> totally frustrating. got to go to work tomorrow, too, so this is not good. >> and operations staff said they were hoping to get all of the cars out of here at least in previous weeks in about 90 minutes. they are saying that did not happen, at least drivers saying that did not happen. as we come back out here live, 70,000 plus fans were the number inside levi, but a number of them took public transit. that really went off without a pitch. getting out of here, a different story altogether. santa claire rarks as well as the staff here at the niners will be reviewing their travis
