back who has been charged with spanking his four-year-old son with a tree branch. last night the team reversed course responding to the public pressure and put peterson on the exempt list which means he must stay away from all team activities, we're talking about practices, games, and what not until his case is resolved. now his first hearing isn't until october 8th. the owners released a statement which read in part, quote, we want to be clear, we have a strong stance protecting child and welfare of children. at the same time, we to want express our support for adrian and acknowledge his seven plus years of commitment to this organization and this community. adrian emphasized the desire to avoid further disreaction to his teammates and -- distraction to his teammates and coaches. the vikings actually deactivated peterson for the game on sunday before reinstating him on monday. peterson not the only player to be charged with some form of

abuse. ray mcdonald, he's been charged with domestic abuse, baltimore ravens ray rice suspended for beating his then fiancee in an elevator, and carolina panthers greg hardy arrest arrested for assaulting and threatening his ex-girlfriend. group advocates on behalf of wrim flew a banner calling for the resignation of roger goodell. >> and this just changes on a dime too. one moment, they've going to reinstate adrian peterson, the next succumbing to public pressure. >> money too. >> money more than anything. yeah. fans are angry, but when you have these sponsors already pulling their support for peterson and one fulling for the family and other the same. going to have. >> interesting priorities. >> very. thanks so much. okay now to a developing story in a northern california, strong gusty winds are expected today to fuel al destructive wild -- a destructive wild fire near mt. shasta.

firefighters have only contained 25% of the fire so far. nearly the entire town of weed near redding was evacuated while the bold fire squept on through. zroiing more than 150 homes and buildings, including two of the town's churches. "today in the bay's" jodie hernandez joining us live with the latest, jodie, this has been an impactful fire so far. >> reporter: it really has, sam, i'm standing on one of the many blocks that this fire destroyed. in fact, i'm stand income somebody's doorway. you can see the entryway remains, but the house is gone. just one of the many, many houses out here that the fire destroyed. and the conditions continue to be challenging. two days after this fire started, firefighters as you mentioned have contained just 25% of the fire. now, last night at a community briefing, firefighters explained to residents just what they are up against. conditions are expected to be more severe today, wind are

expected to be stronger, humidity is expected to be lower. that is not good news. now, this fire has not been discriminating, among the fire victims, four firefighters who lost their homes including a cal fire battalion chief. >> you know my fame didn't get hurt, we got our -- family didn't get hurt, we got our pets out. it's a bummer to lose all your pictures and we have four kids. and you know, just all those family memories are gone, but it's the same across everybody here. so that's kind of the hardest part. >> reporter: and we are back here live where you are looking at the damage that fire battalion chief lives on wood bridge court. we're not sure if this is his home, but we are on wood bridge court this morning. again, conditions are expected to be severe today, the wind has already started to pick up. it will be a very tough and challenging day. reporting live from weed, i'm jodie hernandez, "today in the

bay." >> no question about that, we'll check back for more details, thank you. 5:04, we have new details now on the deadly plane crash in reno that killed a pilot from san jose. according to the mercury news, part of a wing detached from the experimental aircraft causing it to roll and crash. it hammed during qualification -- happened during qualification heats during the championship races last week. the pilot, 64-year-old lee bethel of san jose died in that crash. marin county's district attorney and center for domestic peace have come up with a different kind of gun buyback program. excuse me. according to the marin independent journal, every saturday in october, parents and children can surrender toy guns and violent video games, this in exchange for ben and jerry's ice cream. they told the paper getting rid of toy guns and violate video games could change the way children handle conflict later on in life. parents who surrender items will

also gate raffle ticket. facebook officials and drag queens will meet today to try to resolve a dispute involving one of the most talked about rule. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live in san francisco, steph, facebook's real main policy is at the heart of the problem here. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, laura. the policy stating you have to use your real or legal name to log in. after local drag queens said this is discriminatory, david kpoes requested facebook meet with the group, set to happen here today. very often drag queens will use alternative or chosen names for instance we spoke with one who goes by eric lucy and jacqueline in san francisco. and many say in recent weeks, they've been locked out of their facebook accounts and would only be allowed access again if they listed their legal names like the one on a credit card or driver's license. facebook statement in part said that it is to protect user safety and if people to want use a different name, they can

provide an alias on their profile or create a business page. a move some say is not only discriminatory, but also damaging. >> people that have, you know, gone by their drag name for their entire career, they've accumulated all these friend on facebook, and if you have to create a separate page, you're starting from scratch, and that's not fair. >> there are people who are closeted for different reasons, may not want to use their name. >> reporter: now originally members of the local drag community were going to protest at facebook's headquarters in menlo park scheduled for 11:00 yesterday morning. they were planned, but signs and bull horns to make noise, however that was canceled when facebook agreed to today's meeting. already though a big social media campaign has taken place with a #mynameis. again a meeting set to be here at city hall today. coming up in the next report, facebook is not the first to try this. another social media giant did try this, what happened with that effort coming up in about half an hour.

showers for your wednesday morning forecast. partly cloudy skies out right now, and we will see patches of low clouds, coastal fog for the morning heading towards lunchtime, we should again to see high clouds sweep in. areas in the north bay today, to the north of santa rosa, there is a chance of seeing showers later today, but looks like most of it is going to hold off to later on tonight into thursday morning. so that's a look at the rain there offshore. you can see the cloud band here. so we're going to manage at least sunshine to start the day, then eventually the clouds will continue to increase as we head through the afternoon. rain totals here, notice where the accumulations begin, mostly overnight into tomorrow morning. higher totals here in the north bay, but enough that it should wet the ground around the planes towards the north bay where it could cause issues for tomorrow morning's commute. maybe plan ahead for that and dust off the umbrellas maybe for the morning. we'll see a chance of the two few showers coming in early on thursday. highs around the bay area today, close to 80 degrees in san jose. warm temperatures south of san

jose. san francisco upper 60s to near 70 and for the north bay, you'll see highs running cooler as the clouds thicken up later on, see the highs in the mid-70s closer to santa rosa, pleasanton and livermore with highs in the low to mid-80s today. and we will continue to see those temperatures in the mid-80s for now, in fact as we get towards the weekend though, high pressure's going to return so the temperatures beginning to climb back up. look at the tri-valley. you'll see numbers closer to 90 as early as sunday. for a check of your commute, here's mike. over towards oakland, we saw the traffic break or the rolling round robin, no more delays, held around high street, slowly moving north towards 29th. the item has been removed from the lane. no major problems for the speed sensors. here's the coliseum. further north, smooth drive. just use caution through downtown as they may have activity in the area. 580 clear. so the bay bridge toll plaza. typical pattern there. same thing for the dublin interchange. slowing off the dublin grade,

that's typical as more cars hit the road. no problems, i took the crash off. all activity smooths out and livermore, typical pattern for the tri-valley. south bay shows a nice easy drive here. typical construction here for 880 and 280 around the interchange. also watch campbell, union at campbell, there may be traffic control, there was an earlier carport fire nearby that does not affect highway 17. although we see slowing through the yairt. so far, no effect on that for the morning commute. rest moves smoothly. we'll look at fooster city. the approach off the san mateo bridge, easy drive across 92. back to you. 5:19 right now, be ware of the bugs. the deepening drought isn't the only thing threatening our crop. a very dangerous bug arrived eating its way through the bay area. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in san jose, now is it the bagrotta bug moving north? >> reporter: well laura, welcome back by the way, this is a bug

that doesn't look particularly scary, as it ravenous ab diet and no -- appetite and no enemies. my skin's going to crawl. hopefully you haven't seen any of these guys in your garden. the painted bug is smaller than a penny with a black head and orange and white markings. this is video from the extension, and the bug have a needle-like mouth they use to attack plants from the time they sprout from the seed from the time they are fully mature end a the favorites are coming up soon. cabbage, kale, japan mustard seeds, in a bind they'll feed off the wild mustard. and the sweet plants that we use just have ornamental gardens around our homes. while some pesticides do work, those are not on option for organic farmers and gardeners. and the bugs don't seem too interested in the bait trap that

lure other kind of sink bucks. experts say a hard freeze this winter may not help because those bugs burro in and high in the soil. so here's what you can look for in your garden. bugs are about the size of a water melon seed black with orange markings, you can watch for plants that have leaf damage or wilting holes in the stems and such. and the bst chance is after you water because they will kind of try to get away from the water and also during the warmest part of the day when they are most active. the bug has been spotted in california for years now, the problem is now it's here in santa clara county and gilroy, hol ster, and the big fear is it could freed spred on to san mateo county where they grow all those winter crops, the kales, cabbages and such. so, take a look around your garden, if you see anything, call yrl master gardener where you live. in san jose, kris sanchez,

crews can't seem to catch a break. strong gusty winds are expected to fuel the blaze. towns have been evacuated because of the bowles fire. flames have destroyed more than 150 homes and buildings including two of the town's churches. "today in the bay's" jodie hernandez joins us live from weed this morning with the very latest on some of the damage done, look at that behind you, jodie. >> reporter: it is really unbelievable, laura. and conditions will be very, very severe today. tough day, the wind have already started to pick up and again the conditions are expected to be severe. now we are standing in front of somebody's home. on one of the many, many houses destroyed by this wind whipped fire. many people saw everything that they've worked for gone in just mere minutes. now firefighters want to make sure that no more homes with lost in the city of weed, but they do have their work cut out for them. at a community briefing last night. fire officials explained to

folks what they will be up against today. wind will be stronger, and the humidity lower. not a good combination. but residents are very grateful for everything that firefighters are doing to protect their town. >> there are no word, there are not enough brownies in the world. you know, you can't thank them enough. they saved the town, the fire was on its way to downtown, they saved the town. unfortunately we lost our library and part of the grammar school, and part of the high school. but it's, the town is here. and the firemen are wonderful. >> reporter: now firefighter victims gave firefighters a standing ovation at last night's community meeting. a very touching moment for everybody out there. we're back here live again you are looking at the damage, very, very severe, again, conditions are expected to be very, very

tough today. folks are certainly hoping that no more homes will be lost. reporting live in weed, i'm jodie hernandez, "today in the bay." >> wow, they've lost so much but remain so appreciative. thank you very much, jodie. fire in weed may be the most destructive, but not the only ravaging california this morning. just east of us, hundreds of firefighters are battling the king fire. that fire is blurning between lake -- burning between lake tahoe and sacramento forgs the closure of highway -- forcing the closure of highway 50. crews are worried embers will jump the highway and threaten hundreds of other homes. its burned 13,000 acres and it is only 5% contained. specialized team of firefighters were pulled from the black fire overnight to go help out now with the king fire. a number of other bay area fire agencies sent strike teams to battle the dozen major fires burning across our state. >> good collaboration, thank you, lawrie program. much like a very talented

running back who finds himself in quite a bit of hot water this morning, the minnesota vikings overturned a decision to allow their biggest player to play. he was deactivated, now could play. another change, another reversal, what prompted this? >> reporter: public pressure namely. the tea deactivated for sunday's game because of child abuse charges. then on monday, they reinstated him, but apparently now the public pressure has gotten to the team's owners, especially with sponsors pulling out or threatening too to. last night they put adrian peterson on the nfl's exempt list which means he must stay away from team activities until the legal case plays out. law enforcement arrested peterson last week for allegedly spanking his four-year-old son with a tree branch. the team owners have released a three paragraph statement which reads in part, we will support adrian during this legal and personal process, but we firmly

their support out. anheuser-busch and papa john's threatening also. >> thank you very much. thank you very much, it's 5:35 right now, new this morning, investigators hope the light of day can help them figure out what led up to a crash that sent a car over an embankment on 580 and dublin killing two people inside. it happened last night at about 11:00 in the eastbound lanes near the interchange. investigators say the car was speeding, hit an suv carrying children, then ran off the road down an embankment and burst into flames. investigators have not yet identified the victims, but say the family in the suv were not hurt. the road has reopened this morning. police have not arrested an 18-year-old who say they killed a homeless woman, beating her to death in san jose. this is kevin, investigators say he beat 58-year-old betty jennings to death on friday. it happened outside a burger king near the interchange.

they say he and jennings were part of a group gathering in the area that night. he is homeless as well. san jose sharks are joining in the search for morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. they will be at britaautographs exchange far $20 donation. it'll go towards the search for lamar. but they also hope to keep the missing teen on everyone's mind. lamar disappeared in tlel while she was walk -- 2012 while she was walking to school. fundraiser was organized by shark's forward logan couture. more details now, investigators think lamar was kidnapped and killed by antolin garcia torres. grand jury indicted him for her death earlier this year, but the trial has been put on hold until at least november. garcia torres pleaded not guilty. investigators say they found lamar's hair on a rope inside torres's trunk. and that his dna was found on her clothing. state of arizona could get

and safety reasons. local drag queens saying they've been locked out of facebook accounts only allowed to regain access if they use their legal names like the one on a driver's license or credit card. now facebook says this is a policy that protects user safety by holding people accountable. san francisco supervisor david compost who coordinated the meeting said it can do just the opposite. >> there are people that could been closeted for different reasons, may not want to use their name. >> people that have gone by their drag name for their entire career, they've accumulated friends, and if you have to create a separate page, you're starting from scratch, and that's not fair. >> reporter: facebook season not the first to have this policy. google plus enacted a similar quote real name policy three years ago when it started, but this summer ditched those restrictions and apologized in a post in july saying, sorry for the quote unnecessarily difficult experiences for some users. now this is all part of a

mounting social pressure on facebook to do the same. as you can see from a tweet by the snvrz week. the #mynameis is used as a campaign. how much public support is behind this effort to get facebook to change its policy? that's coming up in about 30 minutes. live at san francisco city hall, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thanks stephanie. water emergency in mountainview is getting worse by the day, and that means new restrictions for residents there. according to the mercury news, the city council declared a state of water shortage yesterday. that means the people who live there will have to use 25%less water than they did this time last year. the elevation comes with new rules as well. among the new rules, people cannot wash their cars unless they use a buskt, hotels have to ask people to rel use towels before offering them clean ones. and lawns and flowers can not be watered between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. notes to keep in mind if you

live in mountain view. >> everybody has to cut back. rain in the forecast, where's it going to hit? >> right now especially the north coast. little bit of rain coming in. right now the radar view is encouraging. we'll put it at that for if this time of year, it's late september we see the first chance of fall showers rolling into the north bay, but looks by this time tomorrow morning we'll have some of what's showing up north to the north pushing further south around the bay area. the cloud cover off to the west. the focus for now with the moisture moving from south to north will be on the north coast. areas mainly north of santa rosa, it'll begin to move southward tonight which will bring us the opportunity for seeing rain. this morning we're seeing temperatures low to mid-60s, not as chilly, we'll see numbers mainly a bit more mild now as the clouds continue to thicken up during the day. you can expect here patches of low clouds for the morning increasing high clouds around lunchtime and then later on in the day, especially north of santa rosa will begin to see the chance of the showers moving in from off the ocean. hour by hour for 7:00, obviously

we have partly cloudy skies around the bay area, then tomorrow morning, right there, 7:00 in the morning tomorrow, you're seeing the showers push through the bay area and probably through about midday before thing begin to dry out for the second half of the day, then friday, we transition back into drier weather. rainfall projections here. bigger numbers towards santa rosa, looks like an opportunity for all the bay area to get something out of the system and slight chance of isolated thunder shower or too with that unstable air during the day thursday. it's still possible to get locally higher amounts especially in the north bay hills during date tomorrow. today highs in the 80s around the south bay with partly cloudy skies, mostly cloudy tonight and highs in the 60s to low 70s around san francisco. pleasanton, livermore, highs in the low to mid-80s. temperatures are actually going to cool off a little bit into tomorrow, obviously chance of seeing the showers for thursday, but the weekend high pressure returns and temperatures climb again close to 90 inland in the

tri-valley with mid-80s out towards the south bay. now for another check of your wednesday commute, here's mike. >> good morning, rob. it was four minutes since we showed you the bay bridge metering lights turned on, we take a look here. took a peek, look, i don't know. smooth drive here. big buildup forming at the toll plaza itself, no problem out of maize for the east shore freeway. let's look at the maps. i'm concerned about 880 because we had reports of a crash around industrial. we don't see any major slowing, but northbound with the chunk of concrete reported around tenson as well. the crashes look like they're moving from the roadway. we have standard flow of air. 580 out of the dublin area, slow here, same thing for livermore. standard for the tri-valley, nothing unusual heading south toward the south bay and roads and rails all looking nice. no delays reported for the agencies into the city, many through the city, cal train and vta, along the peninsula a smooth drive. san jose, live look shows you a build starts here, 101 towards

corinthian college. now the government says they may have been ripped off. scott mcgrew, there's a chance students could get their tuition money back. >> could. the big question is how much money does corinthian college still have? it's the company of heels college and everest college, schools that taught in dental hygiene and security and other professions. the feds sued corinthian for $500 million, alleging a couple of key things. first if the school would intentionally charge more tuition than the government was willing to lend in student loans so you were forced to get a private loan. counsellors created the genesis loan. if students fell behind, the lawsuit says corinthian staffers would pull kids out of the class, ask them why they weren't paying, give staffers and teachers bonuses if they got the student to pay up. and though everest and job placement in some cases, they were single day, in other cases,
