is "today in the bay." from northbound bay area -- nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." and very good wednesday morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. fire investigators are figuring out what sparked an early morning fire that scorched several cars and forced dozens to evacuate. this happened around 4:00 a.m. at an apartment complex on the 100 block of union halve. that's why where we find kris sanchez joining us live from the scene, what is the latest? >> reporter: well what a wake up call for the folks who live in about 16 apartments in a building all way towards the back of this apartment complex, the fire was knocked out quickly, but according to santa clara county fire, this is really a matter of a hazardous materials situation and once the flames are out. we have kendall pearson from the department. >> good morning. >> reporter: you made quick work of the fire, but there's hazardous material after that. >> considering the gasoline, we
6:02 am
consider a hazardous material, we don't to want release into the environment. these are deep apartment complexes here on union avenue and campbell. they back up to highway 17. the other side of highway 17 is the creek. natural repairing environment. the fire did compromise a couple of the fuel tanks, we have three cars on fire when we got here. we're fortunate the fire station about 300 yards away from the incident. but the fuel tanks were compromised, and not knowing how many gallons was let louis. we recognize the fact there was fuel in the water to fight the fire and quickly covered up the storm drains of plastic and using our has mat unit which is a standard of the response. >> we saw the booms if they're still in the bay or other bodies of water. trying to mop all of that up. you think none of it made there? >> we recognized the sheen in the water from the fire fight, again, our has mat unit is -- hazmat unit is part of the
6:03 am
regular response. >> reporter: you all are quickly getting ready to come out. >> we are. >> reporter: made quick work of it and no spill, no hazard to the creek. so here we are in campbell, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> good news there, thank you very much, kris. now to a developing news in northern california where gusty winds today are expected to create new problems for those battling the most destructive fire in california this year. nearly the entire town of weed near redding remains evacuated while the bulls fire swept through destroying more than 150 homes and buildings including two of the town's churches. "today in the bay's" jodie hernandez joins us live from weed this morning with an update on the situation. some folks are left with nothing, jodie. >> reporter: that's right, it really is sad to see. now cal fire as you mentioned is calling this one of the, or actually the most devastating fire the state of california has
6:04 am
seen so far this year, and it is easy to see why. i'm standing in somebody's doorway, you can see the stone entry way is still standing, but the rest of the house, it is gone. just one of dozens and dozens of homes that have been destroyed out here in the city of weed by this wind-whipped fire. as you mentioned, some 150 structures have been destroyed out here, many of them homes. now firefighters want to make sure that no more houses are lost, but i'll tell you, mother nature is making it mighty challenging. wind are expected to be stronger today, the humidity lower, not a good combination, especially when there are still so many hot spots smoldering. >> we need to get all those hot spots out, they'll sit there and continue to burn down into the tree trunks or the roots or even the trees. you sigh the trees standing that are burned also and the fire can be held up in those where with these wind, it'll promote that fire as far as the embers and what not and can blow across the
6:05 am
firelines. >> reporter: and we're back here live, looking at somebody's wood stove. one of the few items that you can actually still identify in this house. again, so many homes are, look, just like this, very, very devastating. the winds have already started to pick up, again, it's supposed to be windier, gusts of up a 44 miles an hour. we are told a red flag warning throughout the day, the active fire is no longer burning, but again the big worries are the hot spots. reporting live in weed, i'm jodie hernandez, "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot, jodie. there are 11 other major fires burning throughout california including the courtney fire. the dog bar fire in nevada county, the black fire near the lake and the massive king fire burning between lake tahoe and sacramento. team of specialized firefighters have now left the black fire in the county to help out with the king fire burning near pohlic pines. that fire has forced
6:06 am
firefighters to partially close highway 50, that's the primary route into south lake tahoe. crews are worried embers will jump the highway and threaten more homes. its burned nearly 13,000 acres and only 5% contained at this hour. if you're confused, we don't blame you. now to the latest reversal concerning a huge impact player in the nfl, star running back, adrian peterson. arguably the best in the nfl who is now facing child abuse charges. has been banned from even coming to the team's facilities. "today in the bay's" bob redell has the latest on adrian peterson and why the team, bob, has changed its heart again for a second time here. >> reporter: sam, it appears that money talks. sponsors of adrian peterson and the minnesota vikings pulmoed their financial support or threatened to. after the vikings decision on monday to reinstate its star running back whose been charged with a spanking his four-year-old son with a branch. last night the team reversed course, responded to that public
6:07 am
pressure and put peterson on the nfl's exempt list which means he must stay away from all team activities, practices, games, and what not until his case is resolved. now his first court hearing isn't until october 8th. i am quoting here, we want to be clear, we have a strong stance regarding the protection and welfare of children and we to want, sure we get this right. adrian emphasized i had desire to take further attention away from the team. this resolution accomplishes these objectives as well, unquote. the vikings actually deactivated peterson for the game on sunday before reinstating him on monday. now peterson's not the only player to be connected with some form of alleged abuse. 49ers ray mcdonald was arrested for domestic abuse, baltimore ravens ray rice suspended for beating his then fiancee in an elevator, allegedly. carolina panthers arrested for assaulting and theretoening his ex-girlfriend. group advocating on behalf of
6:08 am
women flew a banner over several games calling for the resignation of roger goodell. >> bob, thank you very much. it is 6:07 right now, time to check that microclimate weather forecast this morning. as we take a peek outside, look at the glorious bay bridge, glisening with the lights on still. waiting for the son's arrival, don't have to wait long for him. he's right there with a look at the forecast. >> we have interesting things to talk about, actually as we can see over the shoulder, we have the radar dusted off for you this morning as we're seeing showers approaching the north coast. the coastline, i think today, begin to see the showers crossing over around midday. most of it staying away from the bay area for now, but, that is subject to change as we get into the afternoon, we'll begin to seelt clouds spilling closer to the coast. north of san francisco, we'll see a chance of those showers showing up a little bit later on. right now, we're seeing temperatures in the low 60s outside. one thing you might notice before the clouds roll in, the winds are going to pick up out of the south too. so just patches of low clouds
6:09 am
for the morning increasing high clouds around lunchtime, then breezy and mostly cloudy skies. showers off to the north as we quickly show you the timeline for the showers filling in. mainly affecting into tomorrow morning, and through about midday tomorrow and rain totals probably still less than a.10 inch of rain, higher totals locally up here around the north bay over the next 24 hours. most of it coming down tonight into tomorrow morning. temperatures around the bay area today, close to 80 degrees in san jose. still low 70s around san francisco and we'll see mid-70s around santa rosa and low 80s towards the tri-valley. >> all right rob. watching for the changes coming up over the next day or so. changes at the bay bridge toll plaza as well. it is backup forming quickly. nothing unusual far wednesday, but the it is much more traffic flow than we saw half an hour ago. looking at the maps, there are no major problems where we have slowing now for westbound 580 off of 24 and east shore freeway. as you saw, the shift from yell throe green at the 580-24

6:15 am
people at risk. >> stephanie chuang is joining us live. drag queens at the center of this debate today, but people don't use their real names, lady gaga for example. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, laura and sam. the policy requires you to use the name you'd find on something like a driver's license or credit card, but there seems to be plenty of support in reversing this kind of policy which at least a nearing 18,000 sixties on a change.org petition as of now. san francisco supervisor david compost organized this meeting with facebook today, and he brings up the fact that celebrities like lady gaga and charlie sheen for instance have pages that don't use their real names. facebook has said that its policy helps to protect users and hold people accountable in particular to discourage cyber bullying. this could also hurt those people who don't use their real names in order to keep
6:16 am
themselves safe. people that have gone by their drag name for their entire career, they've accumulated all these friends on facebook, if you have to create a separate page, you're starting from scratch and that's not fair. >> people closeted for different reasons, may not want to use their name. >> reporter: facebook is not the first to have this policy. google plus ha h enacted a similar real name policy three years ago when it launched this summer decided to ditch those guidelines and apologize in a july post for quote, the unnecessarily difficult experiences for some users. now originally local drag queens were going to hold a protest yesterday morning at facebook headquarters in menlo park with a lot of noise, signs, bull horns, but canceled when facebook agreed to this meeting. however they add that they may still take action depending on what happened here at city hall today. live at san francisco city hall, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> definitely some logistical obstacles posted here.

>> jodie hernandez joins us live in weed with the very latest, good morning, jodie. >> reporter: good morning, laura. firefighters are calling this the most devastating fire the state of california has seen all year. and it is easy to see why why. we are standing in front of two houses you can see both of them destroyed. everything that people worked for, we are told gone in what seemed like mere minutes. you can see this family's van is still parked in the driveway. apparently not enough time to drive it out, and it is a scene that is repeated all over this city. so far, again, 150 structures have been destroyed by the fire, most of them houses, firefighters want to make sure no more houses are lost, but mother nature is making it mighty challenging. winds are expected to be stronger, humidity lower, not a good combination, especially when there are so many hot spots smoldering out here. now despite the losses, residents say they are so
6:46 am
grateful for everything firefighters are doing to protect their town. >> there are no words, there are not enough brownies in the world. you know, you can't thank them enough. they saved the town. the fire was on its way to downtown, they saved the town. unfortunately we lost our library and part of the grammar school, and part of the high school, but the town is here. and the firemen are wonderful. >> reporter: now residents gave firefighters a standing ovation at last night's community briefing, a touching moment for everyone there. again despite their losses, residents are just so grateful. now we are back here live, you can see what is left of this house, you can see the stove, not many items that you can actually identify, again, this is repeated throughout the city, i don't know if we can pan over across the street, it's light
6:47 am
outside now, so we is get a better look. this entire street is gone. again, this is repeated throughout the city, now the wind is already starting to pick up, i had to actually put my hair in a ponytail because of this blowing so hard. again, this is one of the many challenges firefighters are going to be facing out here today. reporting live in weed, i'm jodie hernandez, "today in the bay." >> so many people just left with nothing, thanks so much, jodie. there are 11 other major fires burning throughout california, including the massive king fire, that's burning between lake tahoe and sacramento. specialized team of firefighters from alameda county have now left the black fire just to go help out with the king fire burning near pohlic pine. that fire forced firefighters to partially close highway 50. the primary route into south lake tahoe. crews are worried embers will jump the highway and threaten more homes. its already burned nearly 13,000 acres and is only 5% contained at this hour.
