>> we're all dressed up and we look great. when we are dressed down, these are still my best friends at nbc. >> later in the broadcast, we will do a small low-key sendoff. >> just like my personality. perfect. we do want to start with today's top story, the growing threat in california. gusty winds are spreading the massive fire. more than 81,000 acres have burned. it's an area bigger than all of salt lake city. this morning, that fire is still 10% contained. >> reporter: 5,000 firefighters are working around the clock. still making little progress at stopping the wind-whipped flames. >> we're setting world records with respect to retardant drops on this fire. >> reporter: fuelled by the drought, it's threatening 12,000 homes. this woman's is one of four that's been lost. >> we were aware of the danger of living there. i hoped we could survive one

more summer and we didn't. that's the way it goes. >> reporter: for this group of friends, it was another day away from home. hoping that they have something left to return to. they evacuated in their rvs. >> you get that kind of panic feeling, oh, my gosh, this is real. this is what we worried about. this is what we planned for. but this is the scariest point. >> reporter: crews have been using bulldozers and chain saws to create fire breaks and make a same zone for firefighters, a last resort. >> we come here to -- so we're not in harm's way. >> reporter: the fire so big that a cloud of smoke bill lows above, visible almost 100 miles away at lake tahoe, from a blaze that could still burn for weeks and is already left an unforgettable mark. now to the secret service under fire after an intruder was able to make it through one of the most secure locations on

earth, the front door of the white house friday. this morning everyone is asking, who is responsible. chris t good morning. >> reporter: army records show the suspect is an iraq war veteran who served from 2006 to 2008. at a hearing on saturday, he faced a number of charges including unlawful entry while carrying a dangerous weapon. an official says he had a knife with him. he is being held as the secret service steps up patrols and launches an investigation to determine how this unprecedented security breech could have happened. the secret service under fire this morning. two days after a man jumped the white house fence and made it all the way inside the executive mansion. a witness captured the startling video. >> honestly, didn't think it was real. the secret service agents were yelling, sir, sir, sir, get down.

>> reporter: the director of the secret service ordered stepped up patrols. a white house official said the president has "full confidence in the secret service t." it's possible because resources were on the other side of the other side. >> that's where the majority of the resources were. >> reporter: the latest blow for an agency trying to rebuild its image after a series of embarrassing incidents, including agents caught with prostitutes in 2012. >> the white house is our most protected place. it has to be safe when the president is there, when he's not there. not only the president but all the personnel that's around the president are critical to the united states. >> reporter: even though the first family wasn't home at the time, there is fresh outrage from capitol hill this morning. >> it's one thing if it was a complicated plot.

but this is so basic and so really -- so essential. it's hard to believe it occurred. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say key to determining what went wrong will be figuring out why the dogs weren't dispatched friday night, which is usually a part of the protocol when someone jumps over the fence. he will be charged monday. when asked if anyone would be fired over this, i was told by a law enforcement official right now the agency is focused on its investigation. >> thank you. turning now to the terror threat from isis. the family of the british hostage pleading with the captors and relesiasing a statement saying -- for more on the threat of isis and president obama's efforts to

form a coalition, we're joined by chuck todd. good morning. >> good morning. >> in terms of forming the coalition, there's the international coalition needed. but in many okays we could say the president needs a domestic coalition as well. further signs of a disconnect between the president and pentagon this week. general martin dempsey saying, we shouldn't rule out the possibility of boots on the ground. why is there this continues disconnect in messaging? >> part of it is the issue of politics. you have president obama who politically does not want to introduce even the idea that combat troop could be going back to the middle east before he leaves office in the final two years. that's why he emphatically continues to rule it out. his military advisers testifying on capitol hill will say, you can't take it off the table. his former top military advisers also testifying on capitol hill said the same thing. you can't find a military adviser that wouldn't say that in saying you can't take the idea of u.s. combat troops it

off the table. the other challenge for the president this week is he's trying to find other countries to put in combat troops. but the question is, he's going to come up to new york city, the u.n. week, which a lot of new york city residents know means a bad traffic week. but it brings world leaders up there. part of the ask is going to be, will they put in combat troops? will they do it if the u.s. doesn't? that's a question havei have th morning. >> we will see that later in the show. secretary kerry has been laying the groundwork in that department. there's also talk -- i know a couple of articles about the fact that maybe the focus on isis isn't the best. there are other terror groups that have an impact on the u.s. has the focus shifted too much at this point? is that the concern? >> there is a little bit of a debate in washington, is there an overhyping of isis a little bit as far as them being an immediate terror threat to the

united states, an immediate national security concern? there is an acknowledgement that if isis is allowed to become a nation state, an islamic extremist nation state, then they could be dangerous. they are not necessarily an immediate threat. the immediate threat is the lone wolf, the radicalized american that attacks us. >> we will check in with you in a little bit. this morning, authorities are looking for a gunman who ambushed and killed a pennsylvania state trooper. the lockdown has been lifted in the area where the suspect is believed to be hiding. residents aren't being warned to be very careful. ron allen is live in mount pocono, pennsylvania. >> reporter: good more than, lester. the shelter in place order for thousands of people has been lifted. this is still an evolving situation that's very dangerous and bizarre. police pulled back from the massive targeted service for eric frein without revealing any new information about where they think he is. or whether they even have a clue.

at the edge of a community under siege, residents faced another night in the dark unable to get home. what are you going to do tonight? >> see what it's like. we will come up with a game plan and do something. >> reporter: for two days and nights, a policeman hunt ordered a lockdown for thousands as police zeroed in on an area they thought frein might be. the order was lifted but with an ominous warning. the pennsylvania state police are very concerned for the safety of the community, a statement said, they do not have train -- they don't have frein in custody. >> when someone like this say fugitive, they stay in an area that they know. there's nothing so far in the investigation to indicate he fled the area. >> reporter: at a local firehouse, support for an operation stretching into its

ninth day. more body armor for police reinforcements on the way. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: volunteers deliver food for the troops searching an extremely harsh and dangerous area. >> they understand what these people are going through and what the police are going through. >> reporter: what are they going through? >> the troops are out there bunkered down in wet, cold, throughout the night. they are doing 12-hour shifts. >> reporter: a manhunt for a trained marksman believed to be in his own personal war with police. police say that frein is still considered armed and extremely dangerous. they are warning residents to be lock their doors and stay inside. it's very unclear right now when all this will be over and when police will be able to tell this community that they are safe. lester? >> ron allen, thanks very much. let's get a look at the rest of the morning's top stories. >> good morning. >> good morning.

>> felt like you shouldn't ignore me, at least today. an escaped inmate is on the run in california. four were captured overnight. all five broke out of a county jail in central california. they face charges includes attempted murder and armed robbery. they have not released details on the breakout, capture or the search. a rescue at sea. the tall ship clipper city ran aground near liberty island saturday. police fire and coast guard came to the rescue of 121 passengers who were on a beer tasting cruise. no one has injured. at least five more doctors have contracted the deadly ebola virus. the doctors were exposed during an emergency infect on a woman in guinea. 300 health workers have been infected due to shortage of supplies. there is an $11 million shipment

good morning. let's give you a live look outside. that's san francisco. we have a check of your micro climate forecast. >> good morning. another foggy morning across the bay area. we'll have to talk about temperatures cooling off over the next couple of days. today we'll start to feel the cooldown because the on shore push is starting to inendate the bay area. as the next storm system approaches that will move in next week. we're clouded over right now. that's the very typical clouds and fog that we see. by this afternoon not as hot. san francisco at 71. 83 in the north bay. even the peninsula coming closer

to the mid-70s. as far as yesterday you're closer to 80. we do have rain in the forecast. in fact, several days of rain this upcoming week. we're excited about this. we want to make sure you tune in to find out how this will impact you're week. we could be talking about a soaker coming up this week. >> that's exactly what we need. it will affect the commute. day one is in the books and neighbors are giving rave reviews for the beyond wonderland concert in mountain view. last year police received more than 100 noise complaints but this year they are down a dramatically after the first day of the two-day show. nearly 20,000 people expected to attend. the event kicked off yesterday afternoon. people in the neighborhood say they are pleasantly surprised about just how much quieter this year's concert has been. police say so far there's only been two noise complaints compared to 140 last year.

mountain view police say the arrests are also down. a woman in san francisco hit and killed while trying to cross the street. the man behind the wheel is now behind bars this morning. the woman was hit in busy china town just before 10:00 saturday morning near the stockton street tunnel. emergency crews responded to the area and declared the woman described as an asian female dead at the scene. the driver remained at the site of the crash. he was later arrested on the suspicion of misdemeaner manslaughter. the tunnel was closed for three hours during the investigation. neighbors say the area is very difficult for pedestrian to cross safely. local health is now on the way for victims of last month's south napa earthquake. the community foundation is providing $1.2 million in grants. the money is being donated through about 20 non-profit groups now helping victims. the money is meant to be cover a

variety of costs including medical care, temporary housing, food and clothing. the foundation will announce the exact process for receiving grant money on october 1st. coming up at 7:00, a survival story that will make you smile mp this puppy lived through a traumatic experience only to make a remarkable recovery. we'll show you her reunion with the worker that saved her life. we'll have top news stories at 7:00. back to the today show.

"today" show is it's a great platform for the audience to get to know who we are when we're not talking about the news. i love fitness, and over the last couple of years of the "today" show, our audience may have been on this journey with me. the 30 day fitness challenge, lester trying to climb over a wall. for me, it has really opened up so many different avenues with which i could explore, with which i could speak to people, i could learn more about myself and take this to the next level. the beautiful thing about health and wellness and fitness and all of it is if one person in the room is doing it, walking down that room, other people want to follow suit. anyone can do anything for 18 reps. there were so many different opportunities we could inject fitness and this healthy lifestyle into the show and suddenly the four of us became a pretty tight unit. we banal really excited about

even though jenna is moving on to a new role, she will always be a part of our weekend "today" family. we have shared laughs and some big personal milestones. here is a look at some of our time together.

instigator. she insti gates fun. >> loyal. >> jenna is awesome. >> it has been seven years. i literally grew up in that job. lester has been the one person with me from the beginning. our first year was really rocky. >> we didn't connect right away. >> he didn't really talk to me at all. >> you heard that i didn't talk to her? she never talked to me. okay. no, i never talked to her. >> i bonded with lester probably a fur years ago when the show went to utah for an overnight trip. it was the middle of the night. >> i had to get something out of my bag. i climbed out of my sleeping bag. i was waring my skifshys. it's pitch black. >> took out my camera. i took a picture. >> all i could do was laugh. it was funny. that was the point i think that

i kind of got her. we began to form this friendship. >> the trip down to jamaica with lester meant a lot to me. >> we were both exploring our connection to the island. >> we were on a boat. i don't know what that was that he was doing. some kind of -- a weird shaking move. i would probably go into traction. >> i have some real moves. she always makes fun of my dancing. >> we enjoy spending time with each other, whether on the set or off the set. >> i think it was her starting these friday morning workouts that brought us all that much closer together. >> my favorite moments have do with fitness, which is appropriate, since that's where she's moving on to spend more time. i call your attention to the plank competition. >> everybody is on set. >> the goal was to do a three-minute plank. we did three minutes. she did three. i did three fifteen. >> i'm going to miss our singing duets. very impressive.

>> the minute there is music, there is not a doubt in anyone's mind that we're going to be singing. where he belting whatever it is, whether we know the words or not. that's the beauty of it. >> inside jokes that we have. i love when we all get to do something together. the farming segment, i was really looking for to it. but i never really had done farm chores. i thought, you know, this will be interesting for me. it was even more interesting for jenna. watching jenna milk a cow was hysterical. >> that is enough for a bowl of cereal. i feel like job well done. >> jenna has this huge heart, a great sense of humor. people know her for her sarcasm and wit. behind that, she's really -- she's a mush. first day that i met harper, she was so excited. watching them want to hold my child really made me believe that these are my friends. >> i remember loeholding her an singing "my girl."

she looked at me. it was another member of our family of friendship. it was a special moment. ♪ we're halfway there >> oh, my goodness. >> i just enjoy working with her. i enjoyed her company. i loved being able to laugh in the morning. i'm going to miss having my buddy around. >> she's a tremendous broadcaster. i would say without hesitation that jenna is one of my best friends here. that's quite a statement for a guy who seven years ago was rolling his eyes going, who is this person? >> i'm having a hard time thinking about the fact that i won't be getting up on the weekends and joining niece guys anymore. i'm going to miss niethese guys. i really, really am. >> oh, my gosh. >> seven years.
