good morning. i'm dara brown. after more than a week of searching, investigators in pennsylvania believe they're close to finding suspected cop killer eric frein. police have released new photos while searching for frein. one picture shows an ak-47 that investigators believe he was carrying while on the run. another shows ammunition. police say it is just a matter of time until frein is found. >> we're pushing hard. he is no longer safe and i am confident that he will be apprehended. >> frein is accused of ambushing two state troopers more than a week ago. new this morning, a possible clue in finding missing uva student is made public. >> in fact, i believe that jesse matthew was the last person she was seen with before she vanished off the face of the earth. >> matthew is now a person of interest in hannah graham's disappearance. he walked into the charlottesville police station, spoke it a lawyer, but fled. there is now an arrest warrant

for him. graham's vanished september 13th by a mall. security cameras caught her last movements. hannah's father made this emotional plea. >> who saw hannah? somebody did. i'm certain with everybody in this room and those watch iing knows what happened to hannah could happen to their child. >> this weekend more than 1200 volunteers combed charlottesville for clues. a man accused of sneaking into the white house with a knife is expected to face a judge this morning. omar gonzalez, an iraq war veteran, was arrested on friday, after reportedly scaling a fence and making it inside. right now he's behind bars. he could face ten years in prison. the secret service is coming under fire following the stunt. officials are now considering screening tourists to checkpoints a few blocks away from the white house. for now, the secret service has stepped up patrols and increased surveillance in the area.

this week could prove to be pivotal in the fight against isis. president obama will be meeting with united nations security council leaders in an effort to turn talk into action. the u.s. is seeking a new resolution demanding countries tighten laws to prosecute those who travel abroad to join terrorist organizations. nbc's tracie potts is live in washington for us. tracie, what can we expect to see this week? >> reporter: expect the president to head to new york tomorrow for climate change meetings and on wednesday expect him to make a big push for other countries to join this fight. president obama stands before the united nations wednesday. he is expected to address everything from ebola to the fight against the islamic state. >> i agree with president obama's goal that they must be defeated. i'm just not seeing the strategy that is actually going to work. >> reporter: u.n. ambassador samantha powers says 40 nations are backing the u.s. against isis. and if the president goes ahead

with air strikes in syria -- >> we will not do the air strikes alone. we're not having problems getting countries to commit. >> reporter: president obama has been briefed on the military plan, but he hasn't signed off yet. the pentagon wants more arab nations involved. >> they aren't as committed as the united states. >> reporter: the president promised, no u.s. ground troops but military experts doubt that's possible. >> what i think you're seeing now is frustration, frustration on a military perspective saying don't limit us on what we need to do to defeat this terrorist group. >> reporter: in new york this week, president obama is chairing the u.n. security council, pushing a measure that would impose a global travel ban and freeze assets on groups like isis that bring in fighters from abroad. back in washington, lawmakers are questioning white house security after back-to-back security breaches last weekend. one man got all the way inside before the secret service stopped him. >> how anyone, especially in the days of isis, and concerned about terrorist acts, someone could actually get into the white house without being

stopped is inexcusable. >> reporter: now we hear the secret service as you mentioned earlier is looking at backing up those screening checkpoints. here on capitol hill, lawmakers are pushing for a full investigation and we can even see hearings here on the hill about this soon. dara? >> tracie potts, updating us live from washington, d.c., thank you so much, tracie. three afghan soldiers in the u.s. for training are missing. the trio, a major and two captains, reported missing saturday. they were staying at a military base in cape cod since september 11th. the men were last seen at a mall in hyannis. it is typical for visiting soldiers to leave base and explore. the men are not considered dangerous. the exercise they were apart of ends on wednesday. there is big news from nasa. >> all i can say at this point is we're in orbit at mars, guys. >> the m.a.v.e.n. spacecraft arrived at the red planet on sunday. its 442 million mile journey began nearly a year ago.

nasa will spend the next six weeks tweaking the robotic explorer. m.a.v.e.n.'s first mission, probe the planet's upper atmosphere. the goal, find out why mars went from warm and wet to cold and dry. pope francis has a message for isis. and it came during his trip to albania during a speech. the pope blasted extremists who use religion to justify their evil, saying let no one consider themselves to be the armor of god, while planning and carrying out acts of violence. it was the second time his holiness publicly targeted isis. security was unusually tight during his trip to the mainly muslim country. today is the last day of summer. and nbc meteorologist bill karins is here. >> you love summer too. >> i do. i am not -- >> your favorite season. that's pretty smart. looks like some areas will be warmer than they were, maybe enduring some of the summer season. but not the case in the west. we're starting off this morning with temperatures over the weekend that were very warm.

it felt like summer, had an incredibly warm, one of the warmest summers ever recorded for many areas of the west. a lot of it associated with the drought. september, extremely dry from l.a. to san francisco. even to the northwest, september has been pretty dry. that's about to change. we have one frontal system that is right along the coast. and then as we go through the day tomorrow, new storm system will move in. a little more active weather pattern is beginning, especially for the northwest in the days ahead. we have a little weak system trying to move through utah this morning with flooding in areas of new mexico. even some evacuations on some rivers there near carlsbad. in the next five days, the bulk of the wet weather will be focused, it looks like, in the northwest, possibility one to two to three inches especially higher elevations. not any changes for today. but as we go through the middle of the week, the rain chances increase and even northern california will welcome any rainfall we can possibly get in this state. that's the national in the wee

working to contain it. so far it burned more than 128 square miles. in fear of isis, a flood of refugees is pouring out of syria. 100,000 people mostly kurds have fled to turkey in just the last four days. they join 1.3 million refugees already there. a rutgers university student is dead, it could be alcohol related. 19-year-old caitlin kovac was at a fraternity gathering. at 3:00 a.m. sunday morning, prosecutors say her friends noticed her in distress. they brought her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later. 24-year-old will likely need surgery after a shark took a bite out of his foot. it happened yesterday at new smyrna beach in florida. they treated him on the shore before he went to the hospital. later on he described what happened. >> i looked down and next thing i know i'm getting pulled by a shark. and just dragging me around and i got free from him, paddled in

leading the news in the huffington post, thousands march in moscow against ukraine fighting. it is russia's first major anti-war rally since fighting erupted in april. protesters chanted, quote, no to war in ukraine and stop the lies of putin. in the new york times, from pole to pulpit, a club and a church do battle. in ohio, a pastor has been protesting the strip club for nine years, trying to get it closed down. so just last month, strippers began showing up outside his church. some other stories we're following. a rocket is headed for the international space station and it is carrying the first 3-d printer for astronauts in orbit. nasa envisions astronauts one day being able to create spare
