clouds will increase steadily and showers move in late wednesday into thursday. i have all the details for your microclimate in moments. >> you have it all there, christina. we are going to update you on a crash coming up. >> let's take a peek outside on this monday morning. it is september 22nd. this is "today in the bay." >> from. in -- from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> we begin with the largest fire burning in california. despite help from mother nature, the king fire continues to rage out of control in el dorado county. 12,000 homes are still in the fire's path, which has grown to 82,000 acres in pollock pines.

bob, more local firefighters are now heading out to help. >> reporter: you are correct. station 9 here in san jose has sent a team of firefighters east to that king fire. and yesterday the alameda fire department isn't a team of five engines along with 21 firefighters. they should be on the front line as we speak. i bring this up to show you the sense of how large this fire is and how far they're having to draw outside their own area. ten homes burned, 12,000 more threatened, as you mentioned. as you can imagine, the smoke is having a significant impact on air quality in that part of california. yesterday organizers of the ironman race in lake tahoe pulled the plug on the event just minutes before start time.

the dee dcision was because of h amounts of particulate matter. some spent months and years training. >> i'm a school teacher. i don't know. i've been dreaming about this since i was a little boy. i don't know how we're going to make this happen again. >> reporter: that school teacher from brentwood said he had never seen anything like it. what i'm referring to is the reaction from the competitors, his fellow competitors, some of them grown men sobbing. the poor air quality also cancelled several other events in the area. >> horrible for those athletes. >> but it is so much better for their health. >> christina, the air quality such an issue out there.

what can you tell us about that? >> we were dealing with some bad air quality on the east end of the bay area over the weekend because our winds were coming from the southeast. now, as of this morning, they have shifted out of the west. so basically that's going to take all that smoke and keep it out of the bay area, but it is pushing into reno. it's pushing into tahoe. if you are going to be headed out and about, there's an alert in place because of that air quality. officials are urging people to stay indoors and not spend any time out there enjoying what people like to do in tahoe this time of year on the bike, on the hiking trails. it's just not a great time to get out there. there are traffic and visibility issues because of that smoke as well. we have good air quality for today. looks like the winds are going to stay out of the west as we head throughout the week. we might get heavy downpours at that location. we'll talk more about that coming up. now i'll send back to you for the top stories of the day.

>> a popular swimming spot is off limits in san francisco this morning. stephanie chuang joins us live in the waters near fisherman's whatever. >> reporter: we're at the historic pier 45. you can see that there's a submarine docked here, as well behind that a fully functioning world war ii ship. that is the "s.s. jeremiah o'brien" and the source of the oil spill that caused the issue. sign reads "danger biohazard, no swimming." the water is just too close to the spill of less than 50 gallons of heavy grade crude oil from the ship as the california

department of fish and wildlife works to make sure there's minimal impact. the coast guard has worked to make sure that applies to the fishermen as well. >> we haven't had any notification that beaches have been closed. we're working to establish the best way to do the clean-up efforts and do them with men ma'am impact. >> the coast guard putting up 6,000 feet of boom around where the oil sheen had built up. it it happened during an internal transfor on board. they're still trying to figure out the exact cause of this spill. no exact word on when when this will over, though the approximate estimate was two to three days. >> now, moving to an update on recovery efforts on the south napa earthquake. the city is scrambling to find

places to house hundreds of workers whose offices were damaged during that quake. the building that houses the district attorney's office, public defenders office were all damaged by burst times. health and human services office was also damaged. the city hopes to have damages repaired within the next six months. >> police have arrested a third man in connection with a deadly shooting in san jose last month. he is expected to be formally charged this week. two other suspects were arrested on murder charges last month but those arrests were not announced until yesterday. all three will. >> char-- all three will be cha with the shoot death of a man in san jose. >> police are searching for a

woman who stole a package from the front porch of this livermore home. >> within seconds, the woman grabs a package and if you know anything about the incident, please contact livermore police. >> a mountain lion, a new one. the lion was spotted 8:00 sunday morning in redwood city near the open space reserve. if you see a mountain lion, stand and face animal, make noises, wave your arms, throw rocks to get it to go away. this is the fourth sighting on the peninsula in the past two weeks. >> wow. it's kind of sad to say good-bye to summer -- >> was it a good summer for you?

an easy flow of traffic. the bay bridge connecting the oakland area with san francisco moves very nicely. an earlier backup on the left that has cleared from those cash lanes and it looks like it's all business off the berkeley curve and north short freeway. >> now a a bit of a scare on pennsylvania avenue. a white house fence jumper making his first court appearance today. >> kris sanchez following the story for us. a huge security breach bringing about concerns. >> yes. and it could change the way you visit the white house. the suspect managed to make it all the way into the courthouse with a knife is expected to make

his first court appearance today. a man identified as omar gonzalez jumped the fence, ran the length of the lawn and made it through the front door of the residence. moments later, guards inside and handed him. >> how anyone, especially in the days of isis and with concerns about terrorist attacks someone could get into the white house without be stopped is inexcusab inexcusable. >> also on saturday, another man was arrested for trying to drive into the white house on to the ground there is. white house fence jumpers are not totally unusual. people do try to get closer. but this seems to be the first time an intruder has made it inside the presidential mansion. coming up with the next half hour, we're going to take you

amazon's e distribution unit are joining in a two-day strike. according to the wall street journal, amazon employees, around 9,000 workers are in germany. amazon has not commented on the strike. >> italy's prime minister will be among those going to school in san francisco today. he'll be stopping by the school with a unique language program. he'll also be meeting with several san francisco businesses. this marks his first visit to the u.s. since becoming prime minister of italy.

like fall already, although it's mild out there, overcast. we have this blanket of clouds overhead. it's not going to last long. we have high pressure in control and some pretty significant wind out there, which is going to mix up our atmosphere and keep that dense fog from settling right at the surface. although it is overcast out there this morning, i have to tell you. san jose starting out mostly clear here. you will notice as the sun starts to make an appearance. we have plenty of clouds overhead. we're starting out in the 60s. about 72 degrees on the east shore, 77 on the peninsula today and 78 for the south bay. let's talk about what's cooking in the pacific and it's a pretty good looking storm system and another one on its heel. we stop the clock at 10 p.m.

precipitation from the north. the precipitation rates will be the highest in the north bay. we're still fair game for a quarter of an inch here. the models are really in disagreement right now. it looks like we'll pick up anywhere between 3/4 to an inch. like i said, we could get up to a quarter of an inch here in the south bay. the storm system looks good, packing a lot of moisture. first i want to check your drive and say good morning. happy monday, mike inouye. >> happy monday, christina loren. if you're trying to get here in the city, a crash at mcarthur tunnel. watch there there may be some work being done. an easy drive through sauce leyte owe and across the bridge

today we go -- how aggressive is pg&e in protecting critical substitutions? the investigative unit made more than a dozen unannounced visits. amongst the largest and critical substations during the day and late at night. >> we spent almost an hour within about 200 yard of this apparent security vehicle. he has not moved. has not asked us any questions. >> would you call pg&e high level security? >> i think, yes, we could ha have -- >> the investigative unit will have the exclusive story tonight

bridge. it is monday, september 22nd and this is "today in the bay." a good monday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> the king fire burning near pollock pines has now burned an area twice the size of oakland. more bay area crews are joining the fight and the blaze has forced the cancellation of an internationally recognized race. bob redell joins us live from san jose where fire crews are among the thousands on the front lines trying to battle this blaze. >> cal fire is not over the hump yet on the king fire. it's only 17% contained, which is why they are calling on firefighters from bay area to help them out. station nine here in san jose, they've already sent a team of firefighters. here's a photo from the alameda fire department which sent a team of five engines yesterday. they should be on the front

lines as a speak. it's only 17% contained, has grown by 5,000 acres over the past 48 hours, ten homes burned, 10,000 more threatened. as can you imagine that, smoke is having a significant impact on air quality. it was so bad yesterday of the organizers of the ironman race in lake tahoe had to pull the plug on the event just minutes before start time. the air pollution index had high levels of particulate matter, which can get in your lungs. it's not a good thing. a huge disappointment. >> as big a disappointment as it was, everybody was still in very high spirits. we all understand the amount it took to get here, the amount of work, effort and money. >> i claim here to acclimate,

i've been trading for a solid nine months. >> if the ironman had been an event that lasted two to three hours, they could have probably put it on. but it's a triathlon that involves biking, running and swimming. but it was seven hours. reporting live here in san jose, today in. investigators are trying to figure out what led to a deadly crash involving a pedestrian on the east bay freeway. chp officers were called to the scene just after 11:00 by somebody who had hit that prn. now, investigators say it's unclear how many cars struck the pedestrian or why that person was on the road in the first place.

of areas of low pressure on the way. that's going to keep our area coming out of the west. plenty of fog carried in off the ocean this morning. your temperatures are really mild out there for the final morning of summer, 63 degrees in the south bay, we're at 64 on the peninsula and 66 degrees right now in san francisco. you're going to hit 67 that cool ocean air will continue to pumpinland all day long. now, as we get into late wednesday into thursday. this system does look very im, we're even counting on potentially a quarter of an inch of rain right here in the south bay and we desperately need it.
