in the studio. i was taking a picture of matt taking a picture. >> do a song in our studio a little bit later on. let us turn to the top story the search for the three afghan soldiers who wept missing off a national guard base in massachusetts. nbc pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski has more on that. good morning to you. >> good morning. these three afghan soldiers, two captains and a major were on a saturday night field trip to a shopping maul in cape cod when they simply disappeared. the three soldiers were in the u.s. to take part in an annual training exercise at the national guard base there in cape cod. now, law enforcement officials both federal, state and even military have launched a massive search in an effort to find them. now, what is still unanswered question here right now is whether this was a spur of the moment decision by these three soldiers to go on a sightseeing

tour of america or whether this was well planned in advance and why, matt. >> mik, before you leave, i heard a lot officials saying they don't consider these three to be a threat to the public and i'm sure why they're so sure about that. >> well, any of these visiting soldiers that come to the u.s. for this kind of training are well vetted in advance for any possible ties to a militant group or the taliban there in afghanistan. without providing specifics, officials this morning appear to be very confident that these three pose no immediate threat to the u.s. >> jim miklaszewski at the pentagon this morning, thank you very much. the man who made it over the the white house fence and to the executive mansion will be in court today. it's being called an unprecedented security breach at the white house and now the secret service is reconsidering how it handles security around the white house. kristen welker is at the white

house this morning. >> reporter: good morning, the suspect will appear in a federal court here in d.c. later today charged with unlawful entry while carrying a deadly weapon. he was found. with a pocket knife. the secret service ordered extra surveillance around the white house while it investigates and a law enforcement official says the agency is now considering new security check points for tourists that will be set up blocks away from the white house. omar gonzales served his country in iraq, but he will face his country today. he breached the white house friday night. cell phone video captured the chaos. he jumped over the fence, sprinted to the first family's residence and entered through the unlocked front door. he was quickly apprehended. he had a knife like this in his pocket. >> this all came about maybe 15

to 20 seconds to reach the step of the white house. >> the white house was evacuated. the family in a statement the agency said the location of gonzalez' arrest is not acceptable. >> i have great respect for the secret service but this is absolutely inexcusable. >> reporter: a law enforcement official says the investigation will include a look at why the canine units weren't dispatched, usually protocol. >> you certainly cannot allow an intruder to make it that far. if you have to kill the individual then you kill the individual. >> reporter: making it inside the executive mansion is unprecede unprecedented. a setback for an agency trying to rebound from a series of embarrassments including the 2012 scandal involving prostitutes in colombia. now new questions about the leadership of this storied agency. >> that's why the secret service exists is to protect the white house, the office of the

presidency, by whatever means necessary. >> reporter: when asked why shots weren't fired a law enforcement official says gonzalez didn't appear to be armed. gonzalez's former step-son told the associated press that he possesses plenty of fire power but clearly didn't want to use it. we reached out to his family but didn't get a response. a white house official says the president has full confidence in the agency. hoda, matt. >> thank you so much. >> police in pennsylvania say they are getting closer to finding the suspect in the ambush and killing of a pennsylvania state trooper. over the weekend they found several item including a gun that they say suspect eric frein may have been planning to use later. ron allen has the latest on this. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. plesz say they believe frein planned this for perhaps as long as a year. they believe he was in the woods over there. shot across the highway killing one trooper, wounding another. now police claim they are clesing in on the man who caused

so much fear and mayhem. federal agents joining the hunt look ready for war tightening the perimeter. following a trail left behind, including weapons, like this ak-47, and ammunition possibly used in the ambush commanders say. >> until now his advantage has been that this is his back yard. we're pushing him hard. he is no longer safe. >> reporter: as the drag net closes in and a two-day lockdown for residents in danger lifted many now wonder how far away is safe enough. this man is leaving his home. >> do you think he's still around? >> they believe he is in the area. that's what they say. >> reporter: his neighbor is staying put. >> i don't feel that he's going to be shooting civilians. he's got something in for law enforcement. so that's why i'm not nervous. >> reporter: police believe frein may have been spotted several times traveling through terrain on foot.

they try to reassure communities where businesses and schools have been shut for days. >> is it safe enough to reopen schools? >> those are individual decisions. we have every reason to believe that frein is focused on law enforcement and specifically the state police. >> reporter: some of the schools that were closed for a day or two and furthest away will reopen with added security. but school officials say it's too dangerous for some 9500 students in the pocono mountains to return to class, there is no indication strong indication, when all of this is going to end. matt. >> ron allen in pennsylvania, thank you very much. >> and investigation is under way into a deadly tour bus crash in delaware. two people were killed, nearly 50 hurt. anne thompson is outside the hospital in delaware this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. authorities are trying to figure out what caused this horrific crash. delaware state police and the national transportation safety board are investigating.

the accident involved only one vehicle, the bus, and every single person on board was injured. >> one man saying my wife, my wife. keeps on playing in my mind. >> reporter: a sunday drive turned deadly on this delaware highway when a tour bus carrying 50 people crashed and overturned. delaware state police say the bus was traveling southbound on route 1, when it hit a curve on an off ramp flipping onto its roof. the bus continued sliding down an embankment rotating on its left side where it finally came to a stop. >> one adult female was under the bus where she was trapped. >> reporter: that woman died at the scene. another woman was later pronounced dead at the hospital. the remaining 47 passengers on board and the driver suffered a range of injuries. >> injuries vary widely. the patients have some have head injuries, some injuries to their torso, ribs, abdomen, fractures, extremities so different levels

of injury. >> reporter: elvis and a friend were on their way home from the mall when they saw the overturned bus. they pulled their car over and jumped out to help. >> we went to a car, got first aid equipment, passed out whatever we could to try to comfort people. made me think of how fragile life at times. >> reporter: authorities say the passengers were part of a sight seeing group sponsor bid a company called eworld travel and tours in new york city. they were on the way back to new york after visiting washington, d.c. hoda and matt. >> sad story. thanks so much. >> natalie's got the day off. tamron's at the news deck. >> good morning. fire crews in northern california are working around the clock to try and stem a massive wild fire. but this morning the king fire is still burning out of control, even with thousands of firefighters on the front lines. kristen welker -- kristen dahlgren is there.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. we got the latest numbers and not what they hoped for. this is now grown to over 87,000 acres, that means over the past 48 hours they lost another 5600 acres or so. they thought maybe they would be helped by light rain yesterday. unfortunately, it also brought in heavy cloud cover that means they had to ground the air operations. they have been dropping record amounts of retardant. it made thing slick and muddy for crews trying to get into the steep and rugged terrain. about 5500 firefighters from as far as florida and alaska fighting this. the other big issue is the smoke. lake tahoe they had to cancel the iron man triathlon because of air quality. a lot of schools in the area also closed today. and people urged to stay inside they are so worried about air quality. they say this fire could be burning for weeks and weeks so a tough battle ahead. >> thank you very much.

new questions are raised this morning about when the baltimore ravens knew about the ray rice incident inside that atlantic city elevator. this as the nfl prepares to meet with advisers to help overhaul its personal conduct policy. peter alexander has been following the story from the beginning. >> reporter: good day to you. the nfl executives are going to meet with players union representatives to talk about how to fix the league's personal conduct policy. we are also keeping our eyes on the baltimore ravens, they will address the new report saying team officials were made aware that rice punched his then fiancee within hours of it happening and began extensive public and private campaigns pushing for leniency for rice, only changing course when that video came out. the ravens said the article contains numerous errors, false assumptions and misunderstandings. espn by the way reports that goodell confided he was not sure

>> a major health scare at an el paso hospital has parents on edge this morning. hundreds of infants born there will be tested for tb. kerry is in el paso with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. yes, it is scary, parents who had their children born right here at providence memorial hospital, have been told that possibly their children were exposed to tuberculosis. they received this letter from the health department that says they should come and begin lining up as early as today to have their children tested for tb, something that is a contagious disease. >> i need some answers. >> reporter: it's the worst possible nightmare for a hospital and parents, newborn babies exposed while still in the nursery, to tuberculosis, a disease that left untreated could be deadly. jessica martinez gave birth to sebastien in october at

providence memorial hospital in el paso. she is one of more than 700 mothers in texas and new mexico who had their children here in the last year. >> tb is a serious but treatable disease. >> reporter: all of them got this alarming letter from the department of health warning their infant may have been infected with tb. a hospital employee who worked in the nursery was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis, officials are not releasing her name but say she's been put on leave. the hospital says so far no other employees have tested positive for the illness. >> babies are vulnerable. their immune systems are not as strong. >> reporter: in a statement providence memorial says we take our obligations to our patients, employees and the community very seriously. we have taken actions that are designed to prevent a similar incident from occurring. >> even if he's not sick, just that fear that it gives me that he could be, and that i couldn't

she went missing hannah graham's parents pleading for help. >> hannah is also our little girl, she's our only daughter, she's a sister. hannah is also the oldest granddaughter and she's actually my parent's only granddaughter. she is enormously precious to us all. please, please, please, if you have anything how ever insignificant can't you think it may be, call the police tip line. tip line with anything that just might help us to bring hannah home. >> the 18-year-old uva college student simply disappeared early last saturday morning. >> i believe jesse matthew was the last person she was seen with before she vanished off the face of the earth. >> reporter: police are now naming 32-year-old jesse matthew a person of interest and say that's him in this surveillance video walking with graham just after 1:00 am. >> we want to talk to jesse matthew. >> reporter: witnesses saw the two together at a local bar,

according to police, who believe the college student may have gotten into matthew's orange chrysler. he is wanted for reckless driving after he went into the police station saturday asking for a lawyer. police say he left without being questioned and took off at a high speed, losing authorities. this weekend, more than 1,000 people helped search for hannah, as her parents desperately hold on to hope. >> all we want to do now is to bring hannah home safely. >> plus will continue searching today. there is also now a $50,000 reward for any information that leads to the whereabouts of hannah graham. matt? >> craig melvin, thank you very much. charlottesville police chief, chief longo, thank you for joining us. >> good morning, matt. thanks for having me. >> jesse matthew comes into the police station and then asks for a lawyer and leaves without answering any questions. what was the reason he came in, in the first place? just to get a lawyer? >> you know, matt, honestly,

it's very bizarre. it's certainly nothing i've experienced in 33 years in this business. he came into the station and he had two family members with with him. he asked for a lawyer. we obtained a lawyer for him. the lawyer came. the two of them spoke briefly and jesse left. to be clear, this high-speed exit that he took was somewhat after he left the station. he went to a location in our neighboring jurisdiction, he was surveilled at that time, not covertally, overtally. >> so he knew police were following him. he gets in the car, takes off at a high rate of speed. that was more than a day ago. have you had any tips, any leads in the last 24 hours that give you any idea where he may be? >> we did follow up on some leads yesterday, as to a location in a neighboring jurisdiction where he may have been. we've went to that location.

he is not there. we're taking every effort that we know of to try to determine his location today. we'll continue to pursue him until such time as he is located. >> you've searched his apartment, his car. have you found any evidence, forensic evidence, anything on phone records that makes you more suspicious of him? >> well, of course, the search with respect to phone record sincere ongoing. we have some potential forensic evidence is at the lab. hopefully, we'll hear back from them today, the latest tomorrow. hopefully, it will be some valuable evidence and help us continue moving this case forward. >> you've been very animated and emotional during these press conferences when talking about the disappearance of hannah graham. it seems to me that, as a dad -- you're a father -- that at times it's hard to separate the two roles of father and police chief. >> matt, it's virtually impossible for me. i'm an emotional guy to begin w

at least that's what i thought. we came across new technology that would allow cooks to open your front door and it doesn't take much, just a cell phone and a few dollars. this is how it has worked for decades. want your keys copied? go to a hardware store in person. the only way a thief could get your keys is to physically steal them off a table or out of your bag. this new app called keys duplicated is a game changer. snap a clear photo of any house key with your cell phone and upload it to their website. their sophisticated software analyzes the grooves of the key down to the tiniest millimeter all from that photo you sent them. then this machine drills out the key's teeth, a perfect match to the key in the picture. the key is mailed right to you and it's cheap. only $6 a key, and no i.d.

corporate world. what shocked you most? >> two days after i started i had my own little office and then someone moved in with me. he said his office was too crowded. and i said, i'm the ceo and he said, what's that? >> no vertical hierarchy in their view. >> no door either. >> no process to planning. i came in and i had lots of experience running product management in companies. so, my job was to create some process. i gave them one of the best plans i could come up with and larry immediately said, that's stupid. don't hand them to the engineers, just go sit with them. >> didn't you threaten to quit early on? >> i think i threatened to quit every two weeks. thankfully eric talked me out of it. >> the company didn't run under any sort of traditional model. smart people attacking a new problem. one of our friends said it's like the borg, it just moves forward. it needs some structure. >> over the last ten years you have built an incredible company that is admired by a lot of

people. admired especially by young people. college students constantly mention google as a place they want to go to work. so, let's now talk to those students out there still in college. let's talk to their parents and let's give them the key to unlock the door of google. who are you hiring right now? >> you want to be a smart creative. >> someone who has some kind of technical knowledge or passion or something. somebody who has some kind of business interest, but they have to be curious. they can't be boring. >> learning animals and you eevaluate them on something called googliness. >> everyone has to have a rocket scientist. do we? yes, we do. what do they do? we don't know. >> when you're interviewing these smart creatives, what are some of the weird or unusual questions that you ask them that let you know they ihave the googliness you're looking for? >> i ask what surprised them. allow how they think.

shopping mall in cape cod, massachusetts when they disappeared. let's bring in pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski. he has more to tell. what happened here? >> willie, all three of these afghan soldiers, two captains and a major, were in the u.s. for an annual training exercise that takes place at the national guard air base up there in cape cod. and it appears they were on some kind of saturday night field trip there at a shopping mall when they just disappeared from view. and they haven't been heard from since. now, according to u.s. officials, state, local, federal and even military law enforcement are seriously looking after to figure out where these three men may have disappeared to. and the big question is today, did they preplan this in advance before they ever got here, and why? or did it simply strike their fancy that they would make a spur of the moment decision to go on a sight-seeing tour of the u.s.?

those are questions that remain. now, u.s. officials insist that none of these three afghan soldiers had any kind of weapons. those would have been taken away after any kind of exercise. and they don't believe -- and it's not clear exactly why, but they say because of a very stringent vetting process, before they ever get to the united states, to figure out if they have any ties whatsoever to militant organizations or from afghanistan, the taliban, these three were cleared to come to the u.s., not considered a threat. and, quite frankly, are not considered an imminent threat to americans even during this search. willie? >> wow, fascinating story. keep us posted on this. we'll see where this goes. mick, thanks so much. an update on a story we've been talking about for several days. our hearts go out to hannah graham's family. now authorities say this missing uva student, that there's a person of interest in this case. she's been missing since last saturday and hannah's parents

just say how can a person, if you know anything, not come forward at this point. we've heard that same plea from the police chief there. certainly, we've talked a lot about this surveillance video. it shows hannah leaving her apartment around 9:30 p.m. last friday night. then we see her running in front of a gas station. at 1:00 am, there's surveillance video from the downtown area, pedestrian mall area. you see her and someone following behind her. >> they know who that is. >> they know who that person is, 32-year-old jesse matthew, who was seen with her. he is a nursing student or nursing aide of some sort. and apparently, according to police, jesse matthew went into the police station on saturday. he asked for a lawyer. they got him a lawyer. and then at some point, he just left the police station without being questioned. and it's a very strange story at this point. at some point later that day, he was chased by police. >> he went to albemarle, a

good morning. and thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez. >> and i'm sam brock. >> the latest on the king fire that continues to rage east of sacramento that is now 88,000 acres, about twice the size of oakland. firefighters have gained some ground in recent days securing 18% containment, but 12,000 homes are still in danger. a total of ten homes have burned in the fire, which is in el dorado county. thousands of firefighters are working on the king fire, more strike teams have deployed to help them, as well. smoke from the fire is so bad that yesterday organizers of the famed iron man race in tahoe
