>> smooth drive for the south bay. slowing, unusual slowing for wednesday, september 24th. coming through the tri-valley. we'll let you know what's going on as you approach the dub len interchange. >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> good wednesday morning to you. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. developing now out bay, homicide detectives on the hunt for whoever killed and shot two men in san jose, injuring a woman as well. happening around 9:00 on rancho drive, this near monterey road. bob redell joining us live in san jose. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam. investigators still trying to piece together who the shooter or shooters were who killed two people last night. police received a 911 call, around 9:00 last night, they -- a report of someone being shot on the 100 block of -- home on the 100 block of rancho drive.

this is off monterey, near capital, not far from el rancho stake house. there were two men, both shot, both once, and unfortunately both pronounced dead at the scene. a third person, a woman, also shot. she was taken to the hospital. she is expected to survive. her injuries considered to be nonlife threatening. investigators, they've admitted they do not have much to go on as of now. >> somebody knows something about what happened, we would love to have that information. we need a lot of help. like i said right now we don't have a suspect description, a motive. we need the public's help. >> reporter: police did swarm the area last night. they did an immediate ground search. they also put a bird up in the air to try to find anybody trying to flee the scene, as i mentioned. still no suspects, still no arrests. those two men killed last night, they unfortunately became the 27th and 28th people to be

killed in the city of san jose this year. reporting live here outside san jose police headquarters, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. after the second round of u.s. air strikes on syria, there's concern that the action could prompt an increased terror threat here at home. as security experts focus on that, the president seems to focus on the growing coalition against isis. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us with more on that. concern about the ramifications of the strikes are going to be. >> of course concern of increases terror threat. the president addressing the united nations, trying to build that coalition and that consensus against isis. also sending a renewed warning to isis and other terror groups who think they might strike america. he is thanking five arab countries, helped with air strikes in syria. there have been two more rounds since the first round. this afternoon the president will chair a u.n. security council meeting focused on stopping foreign terrorists from

crossing the borders out of syria and into syria. but the warning he delivered today will likely be the same. >> i will never apologize for doing everything in my power to protect the safety and security of the american people. >> meantime, there is word that a second terror group also poses a threat to the united states. the campaign targeting an al qaeda-linked group called khorasan. the pentagon says they were ready to attack. military officials warn air strikes are now just the beginning. lawmakers say, they're not there -- there's not going to be enough and the president should be frank about the fact we could be sending boots on the ground. coming up, live to washington, d.c. where we'll get more reaction from lawmakers and more on who might be joining that coalition now that it seems to be in full swing. >> amping up really, definitely so. thank you. san francisco police are investigating a string of laptop

robberies. acover according to the san francisco examiner, the first two happened within minutes in union square area monday. both victims had laptops stolen. the last robbery happened hours later in the portolla neighborhood. the surs spec appeared to be in his 20s. redwood city police asking for help to identify a suspect who punched a man and stole his bike. you can see the suspect wearing a blue shirt and walking into a 7-eleven, moments later appears to be yelling at somebody. this happened around two months ago. you know anything, contact local police. 5:04. new this morning, home depot the latest major retailer targeted by hackers. tens of millions of credit cards may have been compromised. chuang joins us live with a look now. >> reporter: good morning to you. we're talking about roughly 56 million credit cards compromised by the cyberattack that targeted home depot and its customers confirmed two weeks ago by the retailer. people are reporting that they're starting to get fraud alerts from banks and financial institutions informing them of suspicious charges. according to the "wall street journal," the criminals are starting to use these cards to buy everything from electronics to prepaid cards to groceries. last week the company reported the virus had been removed adding it rolled out enhanced encryption at all stores but it left customers feeling vulnerable. >> it just goes to show you things that you take for granted that are safe are not necessarily safe in this day and age. >> reporter: it is the latest in the string of latest breaches. retailers were target, neiman

marcus, hacking led to 40 million cards compromised in less than a month. home depot's much greater. the company says it has -- it was hacked by a system that's never been seen before, custom-built software unique to the breach. a lot more significant than the other ones we've seen. coming up in our next report, the trend of data breaches and how likely you are to become a s coming up in 30 minutes. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you. more details now in the past year alone a shocking 43% of companies experienced some sort of data breach, according to a report released yesterday. numbers are up 10% from the yea before. now the report also found 27% of the companies didn't have a response plan in place in case of breach happening. >> you don't know how to kind of keep vigilance over this when

christina. it's not a cape, it's just a tail of my jacket, anyway. here looking at road work. it's better news. look at traffic flowing smoothly past the sign. talking about the road work but looks like majority of the issues, the slowdown clearing over the last few minutes. we look at the map for westbound 580, the live shot going away, but on the map coming toward us. a little slow from 84 past dougherty where things are starting to clear. from red to orange to yellow. that means speeds are improving, they must have cleared some of the closure. you see speeds and traffic flow on the live camera moving smoothly. on schedule for the dublin interchange. no problem through pleasanton or livermore. single car crash into the center divide sounds like an issue as far as the car goes but not as far as the commute. countercommuted away from the walnut creek interchange. bay bridge without delays. the rest of the approach moves

nicely. oakland, the game, midday, coliseum will see traffic before and after. so around lunchtime and beginning of your evening commute will be an issue. a live look at bay bridge toll plaza. things are moving nicely. earlier backup we had on the left approach off the hov lanes cleared up. looks like cash lanes are open you see flashing lights, that's in the parking lot. a service vehicle making your way. fire truck, there are no incidents in the area. i see sheen on the roadway. mist from the overnight, low clouds could be an issue. look from emeryville shows you mist is an issue as far as visibility from the city from emmiville. may have slicker cars. flashing lights across the span. no incidents on the bay bridge yet. i'll keep tracking this. remember, folsom street, off-ramp closed. folsom, to do that, get off at harrison, on the other side of the approach towards san francisco exiting off from the left. back to you.

yesterday investors weighing data showing slowing growth in countries, including china, france, germany and stocks appreciated by geopolitic the concerns. investors looking over data on new home sales this morning. back to you. 5:15 right now. homes at one central valley city hooked up to fire hydrants to make sure they have water it's happening in hanford, south of fresno. faucets started going dry yesterday. they were tapped out because of a local well ran dry. emergency responders found bottled water for affected homes and put in temporary solutions in place while full-time answer is worked on. the trouble is they don't know how long that will take. temporary water is safe to

area and we are excited about it, nbc bay area weather department. we have a little bit of rain, last week. this week everybody's going to get something temperatures right now mostly in the 60s. mid 60s at that. we are on the warm side of the front. as that front continues to push in, not impacting us until after we hit our highs today at 3:00. that's the warmest time of the day in san jose. that's 81 degrees. 77 on the peninsula. hit 72 degrees, room temperature on the east shore. a's are still in it to win it. let's go, a's! looking good for the day game today at noon you will be in the upper 60s to low 70s with wind picking up. 70 in san francisco. rain arrives in san francisco at 7:00 to 9:00. here what happens you can expect. cloudy skies throughout the day. clouds will build, showers arrive by evening and wide spread rainfall expect most of it here during "today in the bay" for your morning drive. tracking showers as we wake up and meet back here tomorrow

morning. not fogged in at the coast. that's a good sign. sunshine coming your way for the first part of the day. between 12:00 and 5:00. that's when clouds increase. it's going to be pretty tonight at sunset. take out cameras, it's one of those nights. 81, that's what happens when you get storm clouds moving in. 74 peninsula. 71 san francisco. let's talk about the north bay today. 79 degrees, sunny, mild, and they are out there harvesting grapes. temperatures looking good. if you want to hit the day game, out in oakland, i think temperatures are going to be comfortable but that could cause a tie-up on the roads as people are leaving when getting off work. what do you think about that? >> a good warning for folks because the start of the evening commute and the end of the game, so we do sometimes see traffic tying up there, if folks stay until the end of the ninth inning, which sometimes isn't the kaps a's are going to win handily, i'd say, by the fourth. south bay, northbound 101, picking up the volume a little

bit. but we do have some urgent updates here. i just heard from shelby at our desk we have word of a deadly crash on surface streets. word is that it's on tully road, between king and 101. north side of the freeway, eastbound tully road heading away. the closure in the section until 6:30. that's my interpretation of the initial information, between 101 and king road, we will have a closure of tully road. a major problem for folks getting off of the freeway for that -- if that doesn't change as far as updates go. bob redell heading to the scene. he'll bring us an update and sort out the commute. that's just getting started for the south bay. on our maps we see that green flow of the speed sensors past the area. that's good news for now as far as morning commute goes. deadly crash, tully and lenai off of the freeway. road crews are there, 880, stevens creek boulevard. we have traffic continuing to

smooth out after the early problems i showed you by the construction that lasts until 5:00 at dougherty. it blends in with folks coming out of the altamont pass, so that will be a generally slower drive but around the isabel interchange. another ten minutes, that should smooth out. no other surprises for the tri-valley. smooth drive here, still east 24 because of the crash at lafayette exit. no problem at walnut creek interchange or caldecott toward the maze. g re you get to y.h be powell for east bound 80 away from the toll plaza and that maze will be a distraction, that might be why we're seeing quick slowing here. san mateo bridge, live look. we're looking at easy drive westbound. no problems, flat section high-rise. clear view here, low clouds impeding view of the bay bridge from time to time from emeryville. we can see it better than ten

minutes ago. still blur. you can't see the city lights. mist is in the air. may be an issue. even now for on and off-ramps, keep in mind. if you see the sheen, slow it down for safety sake. golden gate bridge, easy drive. shine here, because there's a smear on the lens, not any rain, but a clear view and clear drive through the north bay and across from the north bay or to that side. >> a lot of stories where you hear birds get caught in a plane they're not the only animals that can bring down a plane. >> that would be the faa releasing new numbers saying that more deer than ever, hearing this correctly, deer crashing into planes on runways across country. from 1990 to last year, more than 1,000 collisions between planes and deer, elk, or moose. >> interesting. most of the planes involved in the crashes were damaged. one person was even killed. last month in florida the propeller of a small plane hit a deer during landing causing the plane's landing gear in front to collapse. many collisions involve small

planes but occasional jetliner has been damaged by a deer. i guess they run on to the runway. >> some people are spooked to begin with. that would set you probably off of your sanity there for a second. new technology causing serious security concerns from homeowners. >> take photos of your keys with smartphone and then get a copy mailed for $6. but the website makes it easy for thieves to take your photos and copy your key. >> taking a photo of a key quickly, it means it happens more quickly, it's more convenient and they don't need access for as long. >> website says they require credit cards and only accept clear pictures but admit if they don't verify it's your key or credit card as well and they've got your address to send it to. patent keys are best to prevent duplicates. >> the theme is security breaches, security problems. >> go to home depot, make sure

according to a group, 33% of consumers were notified of a data breach last year. that's up from 25% just the year before. live this morning, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." 5:32. developing story in the south bay. homicide detectives spent the night trying to figure out who killed two men in san jose. the shootings happened 9:00 last night on rancho drive near monterey road near the el rancho steakhouse. officers found two men and a woman each shot at least once. the men dies at the scene, and the woman was taken to the hospital but we were told she should survive. investigators used cruisers and a helicopter to search for the suspect throughout the night but admit they don't have much to go on. >> if somebody knows something about what happened, we'd love to have that information everybody we need a lot of help. like i said, we don't have a suspect description, we need the

public's help. >> a couple of dogs were taken from the home where murders took place but it's unclear why. there have been 28 homicides in san jose this year alone. warning now for people in a quiet walnut creek neighborhood. a gunman kidnapped a woman in the middle of the day and robbed her. the woman was in the front of her house when approached by a man wearing a hat, dark glasses and face hid. he pulled out a gun and made her drain her bank accounts. he drove her back to the neighborhood, get out of the car and ran away. she tells police that she has never seen that man before. san jose police hope surveillance video will help them find men behind a height of a car dealership. investigators say they broke into the dealership, stole a bunch of keys and drove off in luxury cars.

some car were worth more than $200,000 each. police are investigating similar burglaries in santa clara and belmont. investigators also looking into whether two men arrested yesterday know anything about any of those heists. two from oakland were take noon custody yesterday. they are charged with stealing cars from two dealerships last month. police are questioning them. >> the first theft, 200,000 cars, that is never a small business. >> only found one of maybe the earlier cars. >> like out of "fast and furi s furious." develop now, near lake tahoe, firefighters bracing for a second day of battling the fire with high wind, low humidity, struggling to contain the fire. >> they've had a tough go. crews did make progress. despite a red flag warning. they can containment lines around the fire 35%. >> still parts continue to burn out of control this morning.

as of now, more than 89,500 acres are scorched. a dozen homes, 56 small buildings burned. the fire forces entire neighborhoods to evacuate and 12,000 homes are still in that fire's path. we expect cal fire to issue an update with latest numbers at 7:00. >> people in neighborhoods nearby, some, being allowed to return back to homes. many returned yesterday to find homes intact, others had absolutely nothing left to come home to. this is heartbreaking, doug and his family watched the home burn away from the highway. yesterday he saw up close, his home completely gone. >> we have made quite a life up here that we love. on ward and upward. >> heartbreaking for them. >> it is. it's just so arbitrary in a sense. some people, as we said, homes are fine, others come home and

homes completely gone. of course our hearts go out to those families. 5:35 on your wednesday morning. trying to figure out what conditions are going to be like for firefighters out there as they try to contain the king fire. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> i think we're going to get some improvement when we get the 7:00 a.m. update from cal fire. hopefully we'll be at least in the 40% range at that point. the wind is going to pick up today. the good news is rain is on the way to that location, possibly rather generous totals working that way. we'll talk about that. right now you can see the wind arrows pointing to the west. that's going to keep smoke from drifting into the bay area today. you want to keep that in mind, you've got good air quality, that will be reinforced by the rain throughout tonight. temperatures right now, mostly in the 60s. 67 in san francisco. waking up at 66, san carlos. mainly cloudy out there this morning. we've got a lot of cloud cover out there.

and that's what's keeping your temperatures mild. serving as a blanket over the bay area. so as we head throughout the day today, this is what you can expe expect. temperatures in the 0s. 77 peninsula. 72 east shore. 70 rain arriving this evening in san francisco. same for the north bay but not before you hit 80. at 3:00 p.m., highs come in. showers don't come in until 5:00, 6:00 tonight. that's going to mostly impact the north bay. take a look at this. we're getting the latest model run. this is the latest data coming in. this is looking very promising. we stop that clock for you, 2:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. we're not just talking about the light green. we've got the deep green, yellow, orange embedded within. it's going to maintain its organization down into southern california. which means they're going to get much-needed rainfall as well. we stop the clock for you again at 5:00 a.m. getting rainfall over the greater bay area. and then as we head throughout

another 45 minutes before san jose police reopen the intersection here. what's shut down is eastbound tully at lanai and alvin, you can see the scene behind me. what happened around 12:30, someone crossing tully in front of a jack-in-the-box, a half a block away from the crosswalk. my point is they were not in the crosswalk. that's when they were hit and killed by somebody in a car. the police tell us they believe that this was an accident. the driver of the car did stop, waited for police to arrive, has been cooperative. they don't believe drugs or alcohol involved. it's just that whoever the pedestrian was, they couldn't tell us whether it's a man or woman. they made the wrong decision a, trying to cross the street outside a crosswalk, b, it's a busy street, and doing it at night. you can imagine, you can see what the lighting situation is here, you can see how somebody driving down tully might not be able to see the pedestrian.
