what president obama's doing to get more support for taking down the militant group. >> and we have rain coming in as of tonight. at this point, we kind of have some interesting totals to tell you about. we could actually see flooding rain in the bay area as of this evening. lots to go over in microclimate forecast. it's mild out there to start. little fog, though, not too bad. >> rain and fog. these folks heading to the bay bridge where the metering lights are on. south bay, we'll talk about the traffic impact of the deadly crash as well. >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> very good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we begin this morning with breaking news. officers are investigating a deadly collision between a vehicle and a person in san jose. >> it happened at tully road and lanai avenue near 101. that intersection will be closed for a bit longer. >> on the scene now, "today in

the bay's" bob redell, live in san jose. bob, what have you learned about when roads are going to be open and what the latest is? >> well, san jose police, sam and laura, hope to have eastbound tully here at alvin and lanai reopened within the next half hour at 6:30 this morning. speaking to an officer on the scene, holdup is they're waiting for someone with a crime scene cleanup company to clean up whatever's in the road now. so waiting for that company or that individual to show up. apparently that individual is taking care of the double homicide that also took place overnight. as soon as they get here, hope to have this reopened at 6:30. this accident happened around 12:30. just over around 5 1/2 hours ago. police believe it was accidental, there was a person in a car heading eastbound on tully, somebody, a pedestrian, tried to cross tully injack-in-. i don't know if you can see, it's a half block away from the

intersection. bottom line is it's not a crosswalk. this person was trying to cross in the middle of the road outside a crosswalk. as you can see, dark outside, it was in the middle of the night and it's a very busy street. the person who hit this person did stay with their car, is cooperating, and was cooperating with police. police do not believe that drugs or alcohol was involved. rather, this was just an unfortunate accident with a pedestrian making a horrible mistake of trying to cross the street outside of a crosswalk. they've not identify who'd that person was, have not indicated whether a man or a woman. again, intersection here, eastbound tully off the 101 exit, at alvin and lanai shut down for another half hour. live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> tragic start to a morning. developing story in the south bias well. homicide detectives spent most of the night trying to figure out who killed two men in san jose. >> the shootings happened around 9:00 last night on rancho drive near monterey road near the el

rancho steakhouse. officers found two men and a woman, each shot at least once. men died on the scene, and the woman was taken to the hospital but we're told she should survive. investigators used cruisers and helicopter to search for the suspect throughout the night but admit they don't have much to go on. a warning for people in a quiet walnut creek neighbor hpd a gunman kidnapped a woman in the middle of the day and robbed her. the woman was just in front of her home when she was approached by a man who was wearing a hat, dark glasses with his face hidden. >> he pulled out a gun, made her drive him to the bank and drain her bank account. drove back to the neighborhood, he got out of the car and ran away. >> police hope someone in that woman's neighborhood has surveillance cameras and caught a glim of the suspect. the woman had never seen him before. san jose police hoping surveillance video will help them find the man behind a heist at a south bay luxury car

dealership. >> a group of men caught on camera. >> we apom guise, that was not the correct video. looking into whether two men arrested know anything about the heists. two men were take noon custody yesterday. >> they're charged with stealing cars from two dealerships last month. police are questioning them to see if they know anything about the current robberies in south bay and the peninsula. >> strange that all of those would happen so soon. it's 6:04. president obama will continue trying to gain international allies in fight against isis terror groups as another round of air strikes fell on isis targets in syria. >> the latest developments now,

the president addressing the united nations this morning and this afternoon. so much going on. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live with more on that. another terror group, kris, we're learning about. >> khorasan, have you heard of that before? most people have not. that's by design. washington they have been talking about khorasan for a while. we'll be hearing more in the weeks to come. an al qaeda group linked -- an al qaeda-linked terror group that was ready to strike. we'll tell you more what their methods are. it may help bolster the president's case as he addresses the united nations. he's going to thank the five arab countries that have already helped with air strikes in syria. there have been two more since that first round. this afternoon the president will chair the united nations security council meeting focused on stopping foreign terrorists from being able to infiltrate

borders and cross freely. air strikes are just the beginning. lawmakers saying the air strikes may not be enough and the president would be prudent not to rule out boots on the ground. >> i will never apologize for doing everything in my power to protect the safety and security of the american people. >> okay. now more on the terror group khorasan. a name that the president said publicly for the first time after the strikes. it is an al qaeda splinter group operating in syria. and sought to recruit westerners for that fight. u.s. intelligence says, it wants to bring down airplanes with explosives and that is its main strategy. it is led by a man by the name of al fadhli, a top aid to bin laden, just 33, but khorasan's leader, reportedly one of the few people who knew about the 9/11 attacks before they happened. he understands how a terror group works successfully.

>> close ties to bin laden. >> right. >> amazing. >> of course isis and al qaeda, two separate groups, different missions, actually enemies in iraq now. >> yes. >> jockeying for position. they want to be the number one terror group in the world. so bizarre to think about. >> okay. right knew santa clara city council voted on a resolution opposing domestic violence but some say the measure they passed did not go far enough. >> what was approved was a revises version of the original resolution called for the benching of 49ers player ray mcdonald. last night's version makes no mention of mcdonald or the 49ers. critics say santa clara watered down the declaration because of the new relationship with team. however a woman's organization that offers domestic violence services says it's okay with the new resolution. mcdonald the only active nfl player facing domestic abuse charges and still playing. >> niners facing plenty of heat.

>> i can't imagine anybody for domestic violence. >> clearly not. 6:07. developing this morning, firefighters bracing for a second day of high winds and low humidity as they struggle to contain the king fire. >> crews did make progress, despite a red flag warning. now containment lines, 35%. still, parts continue to burn out of control as of now, more than 89,500 acres scorched. >> a dozen homes and 56 small buildings also burned at this point. fire forced neighborhoods to evacuate. this morning, 12,000 homes still in the fire's path. >> we expect cal fire to issue an update with the latest numbers just about an hour from now. of course we'll bring numbers to you. so many people coming back to the scene of their homes. some home intact. >> without forewarning. they saw from the highway homes burning. >> moisture in the air a good thing for the firefighters.

totals as this front works its way to the south. so we desperately need that rain here in the bay area. and i think we're going to see amazing totals. take a look at what the models are projecting. looks like we're measuring that rain in inches in the places that receive the most. i know you want to know more about this. more on this coming up. mike. >> looking at a live camera here, 880 through oakland, southbound headlights at 66, the dark spot across the roadway, reports of stalled vehicle. tracking the area, i don't see lanes blocks but i sigh volume starting to build. keep in mind for the nimitz. the bay bridge, bay bridge toll plaza, the backup because of the metering lights, standard flow of traffic approaching off east shore freeway out of the maze slow from 3580 and 24. nothing of concern, the a's play this afternoon, keep in mind. midday traffic and exiting will start before the evening commute. smooth drive back to its normal flow for the tri-valley after

be comfortable. look at what is on the way through tonight. we are measuring rain in inches potentially. a couple of things that could get in the way of this generous forecast. we'll talk about that a little science to go over. overall, things are looking very optimistic in the weather department. forecast in moments. >> a hint, one of the things is an umbrella. san mateo bridge, smooth drive. smooth drive to peninsulaen we'll talk about the closure of the road in san jose coming up. 6:14 right now. a look at today's top stories. two protesters arrested, some businesses damaged, in ferguson, missouri last night. the chaos started after a memorial to michael brown was destroyed in a fire. brown was the unarmed teenager shot and killed by police this sum. >> redwood city police asking for help to identify a suspect who punched a man and stole his bike. the suspect confronted the

victim inside a 7-eleven, punched him in the face, knocking him off the bike. japan stepped up sanctions over russia over the conflict in ukraine. sanctions include banning some russian banks from issuing securities in japan and tightening restrictions on arms exports to russia. japan has been hesitant to issue significant restrictions. 6:15. one of the big talkers now, home depot warning customers to check the latest statements for unusual activity. >> comes with a warning from banks that someone is trying to use the credit card numbers caught up in the huge security breach. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live in san mateo from one of the local area home depots with more on the extent of the data breach. >> reporter: good morning. chances are if you came to home depot between april and september of this year and used your payment card, credit card information was likely compromises, part of a cyberkaek against home depot.

a data breach involving 56 million credit cards confirmed by the retailer two weeks ago. now people are reporting that they're starting to get fraud alerts from banks and financial institutions informing them of what appear to be suspicious charges. according to the "wall street journal," the criminals behind the cyberattack are starting to use credit card numbers to buy things from electronics to prepaid cards to to groceries. last week the company reported the virus had been removed adding rolling out enhances encryption of all payment data of all stores but not enough comfort for customer who talked about going back to cash onlien the latest in a string of breaches. target hacked in december with 40 million cards compromised in less than a month. neiman marcus reported 350 customers last year affects. last year it checked with mastercard and discover that reported 9200 people had cards fraud lently used elsewhere.

remains to be seen how many credit cards with home depot will have been used fraudulently but again, tip to people is check statements, check with your banks to make sure information hasn't been compromises and cards haven't been used. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> seems you need to check daily as well. san francisco city leaders and downtown developers at odds about the future of the transbay transit center. >> both sides agreed to outline of a proposal last month but now develops are say, we don't like the terms. they say the deal locked them into property rates that aren't comparable with current rates and put additional taxes instead of tax breaks. >> but that deal really fell apart with some developers refused to say they wouldn't sue the city. >> we'll see what happens. a battle in the southern california courtroom could determine how you buy your morning cup of coffee. >> a california nonprofit suing

starbucks, dunkin' donuts and chains saying cancer warning labels need to be included on coffee drinks. the council says coffee contains a car sin know driven. >> here's the thing, nonprofit argues under prop 65 chains need to include a warning label to state the coffee includes chemicals containing cancer. but you'd have to drink over 100 cups per day to get a dangerous dose. >> that could probably kill you in itself. >> three or four might work. >> that's my limit. 6:18. a matter of days and problems surfacing with the new iphone. >> flexible problems, kind of. users reporting iphone 6 pluses bending in pockets. they're calling it bendgate. >> so many put in back pockets and sit down. you can see a user bend the phones with his barehands.

there were similar problems with iphone 5. those owners were able to get replacements. apple yet to comment on the damaged phones. i don't know how damage they are, if they don't work anymore. >> we'll find out. some folks complaining screens are so big they can't get into the pant pocket but if it bens, this up different worlds. creativity rewarded here. >> maybe it's i good thing we didn't upgrade yet. you may need to upgrade to larger umbrella. this is great news. rain is on the way. >> i know you're hinting at there, sam, take a look at my credit card. 66 degrees. it's got the nice bend going there. 63 san jose. you know what? you probably want to invest in an umbrella and windshield wipers. rain on the way. it does like it's going to impact you as of tomorrow morning for the greater bay area. we'll see activity this evening in the north bay. now on the warm side of the

front. this is typical. this is a typical scenario. temperatures mild out there. it's balmy. it's hard to imagine that rain's coming. there's a cold front on the way because it's so mild out there that's what's happening. as it comes closer it's clearing out the clouds out there this morning even before the sun is officially up. we're getting a lot of atmospheric mixing. we are going to tap into subtropical moisture and that's going to bring us decent rainfall amounts. a couple of things could get in the way of the per peck forecast. 70 for san francisco, looking good there. 72 east shore. 81 for the south bay. first, talk about the timing of the front. we stop the clock for you getting into 2:00 a.m. thursday. the front arrives in the north bay. this is packing pretty good moisture. it's going to maintain it's organization and press to the south bringing us rainfall even the south bay where typically we're impacts by the mountains.

i think we're going to get a quarter of an inch, which is an impressive total here in san jose just from the first system. so, let's talk about what the models say. i do agree, we're going to pick up an inch to an inch and 3/4 in places like ukiah, promising for higher totals in the south bay. here's the deal. if we don't get that subtropical moisture tap we're going to take these numbers and shave them way down, maybe not measuring any precipitation here in the south bay. everything i'm looking at lead me to believe this is going to happen. stay tuned. we'll keep you updated every time we get the latest information. let's check your drive, that's always changing. mike inouye. >> indeed always changing. look at more mheadlights northbound. they have more cars on the road. slowing here. look at your maps. 101 from 680880, slower drive

here. it's not so bad. in the yellow zone, speeds around 50, 60 miles per hour at your worst. 87 sorting itself out. concern we have right now, still that deadly crash that happens off of the freeway. bob said overnight, bob redell on scene, tully road near lanai or alvin where the scene continues to have closure for tully. exit's off of 101 but you go around city streets. you might want to exit's capital expressway and take king. crew arrives to clean the scene up. and then they'll reopen probably about 20 minutes from now. still tracking that. live look toward palo alto. peninsula side, nice easy drive north bound past university shopping center. easy towards san francisco. bay bridge into the city as well, backup. metering lights and backup towards the foot of the maze for west 580. slow off of 24. no surprise off east shore freeway. slowing through berkeley and emeryville.

"today in the bay's" tracie potts live from washington with that plus concerns over a second terrorist group. >> khorasan, the second group in the first round of air strikes in syria, the u.s. says they were planning an attack, possibly homeland, and that attack was imnents. a target of opportunity. they went in to get isis and went ahead and attacked this group as well. now, we're also getting reports that there are a new, third round of attacks from the morning, i should say air strikes, from this morning by the u.s. and its coalition

partners. we've been going back how many and where. latest word, five air strikes, four in iraq, one syria, jointly by the u.s. and arab partners. the air strikes continue. the president obama's going to be talking about that in about 30 minutes at the united nations this morning. the white house told us that the focus of his speech is american leadership. whether it be ukraine, whether it be syria or iraq, or even ebola. he's going to be talking about the u.s. leading and other nations, the united nations, backing us up. also, later today, he's chairing the u.n. security council talking about restricting travel for foreign terrorists. >> all right. new development there's with respect to new air strikes. thank you, tracy. police in australia say a terror suspect shot dead had his passport cancel on national security grounds. >> stab two police officers in melbourne yesterday. some experts think the attack

63 san martin. beautiful san jose, mild. 60s. you probably don't need the coat today. showers on the way but not until this evening and only impacting the north bay at about 5:00 to 7:00 this evening. mainly cloudy, clouds are already thinning out you can see that here from satellite imagery. just a pocket here along the peninsula. we're already clear in san jose. on our way to 81, turning cloudy. high and mid level clouds increasing throughout the afternoon. comfortable temperatures, though. 77 for you. 70 in san francisco. 80 in the north bay. let's get to the weather story. that is this very impressive front that originated in the gulf of alaska but as it dips to the south it looks like it's going to tap into subtropical moisture. and this going to provide us with much-needed rainfall. it's been so dry out there, we could see flooding. very localizes, up in the north bay where we get the highest totals.

but that is expected throughout tomorrow morning. the front will come in fast. stop the clock at 8:00 a.m. that's when the heavy rains starts to move into the south bay. by the time this out of here, as we head through the late portion of your thursday, we could be measuring the rain. it's looking more and more likely we will be in inches. great news this morning. throughout the day today, comfortable temperatures. take your numbers down a couple of degrees, even with the cold front coming through. by this weekend, temperatures warm right back up. so how much rain, where you live, that's what we'll talk about in my next report. first if you have to get out the front door, mike is here to help you along the way. halfway there. >> towards the maps, we don't have any unusual slowing but talking about this section right there for north 101 where you see the build coming past tully road where you have that deadly crash scene closing tully at alvin. just past the -- off the freeway toward king. more slowing north 85 coming up past 17. so early build for that section towards saratoga and cupertino.

nothing unusual outside of that. smooth drive southbound 680, predictable slowing out of the pleasanton area. also extra slow as you travel eastbound off the dublin interchange, the dublin grade as well. no incidents reports. smoother drive but slow south bound 880 travel through san lorenzo, hayward, passing by the san mateo bridge. a live look here. west bound on right, good volume of traffic but no problems. look at clouds above the deck, easy drive, clear view, and peninsula shows nice flow at the limit for 101 and 280. towards the east shore freeway. on right, jamming up off the berkeley curve. also across the top of the screen, westbound 580 from highway 24. the golden gate bridge, no backup into the city. look how beautiful this shot is of the north bay, from the north bay, easy flow. typical slowing through navato, approaching highway 37 for southbound 101. >> can we call that an anomaly?
