the white house got much further than we thought. omar gonzalez ran throughout the white house into the east room, and near the doors to the green room before he was stopped. later today, lawmakers grill secret service director julia pierson about plans to change the agency's procedures. nbc's tracie potts is in washington. good morning to you, tracie. the question might be will she stick to a script or not here? >> reporter: or will she say a lot at all when it comes to details about how they protect first family. in this letter, she argues to the committee where she's testifying today that part of the hearing should be classified, it should be top secret because as she puts it, revealing too much detail about how they protect the first family is beyond reckless. >> something needs to be done drastically. >> reporter: today, lawmakers want to ask secret service director julia pierson how a man jumped the white house fence, ran across the lawn, and according to the washington post, got all the way into the east room before they stopped him. >> there has got to be a better

way to deal with it than they're dealing with it now. >> reporter: a new post report says there was mass confusion when bullets hit the private residence in 2011. daughter sasha and her grandmother were inside. >> the rank and file agents and uniform division officers did what they were supposed to do. they took out their weapons, took cover, called out gunshots. >> reporter: but the post claims officers were told to stand down. it was a truck backfiring. then gunfire from a gang shootout. four days later, the secret service confirmed gunshots hit the residence. the arrest came one day after that. >> how interesting, a guy obsessed with the president appears to have a knockoff ak-47 and have shot it somewhere on constitution avenue on the white house's front lawn. >> reporter: former agents blame the chain of command. >> it does make certain individuals uncomfortable to speak openly, to engage their supervisors. >> ultimately the president does retain confidence in the leadership of the secret

service. >> reporter: now, the president, though, must want some more information about this because the white house says that he did meet with his secret service chief in the oval office after that last incident happened. richard? >> tracie potts in washington, thank you so much, tracie. breaking news from little rock, arkansas, to tell you b police saying the body of missing realtor beverly carter has been found in a grave. she disappeared thursday after showing a home. police say they obtained the location of her body from 33-year-old aaron lewis. he was arrested yesterday and admitted to kidnapping her. he's expected to appear in court later today. we'll be watching that for you here on nbc. tomorrow, it could get ugly in hong kong again. live pictures now show calm. the storm, china's national day, holiday wednesday, fireworks were canceled by china. protesters are mad. also tomorrow, adding to the heat there, a deadline. protesters give the government until wednesday to meet demands

graham case to a separate abduction and murder. that new lead involves a 20-year-old virginia tech student. nbc's kirk gregory has more. >> reporter: virginia state police say jesse matthew jr. has been linked forensically to the murder of virginia tech student morgan harrington. >> i'm so pleased that that has happened, but it doesn't change a lot for us in some ways, you know. our bedroom is still empty upstairs. >> reporter: harrington disappeared after a rock concert in charlottesville in 2009. her remains were found three months later on a nearby farm. but her killer was never identified. now, police in fairfax, virginia, say there is a forensic link from the harrington murder to a 2009 assault in their city. last week, the 32-year-old matthew was arrested in galveston, texas, after virginia police identified him in this video with hannah graham in charlottesville, just before her disappearance.

>> i'm relieved they do have someone in custody. and hopefully we do get answers as to where hannah exactly is. >> reporter: this weekend, hundreds of volunteers joined law enforcement in searching woods and rural areas around charlottesville for any signs of the 20-year-old. a college community still holding out hope for hannah. kirk gregory, nbc news. well, the popular phrase, retweets, are not endorsements. it has taken on a new meaning for donald trump. the reality star is mulling a lawsuit after he says he was tricked into retweeting something he now regrets. it started yesterday when a user asked him to retweet a picture of who he claimed to be his parents who passed away and, quote, always said you were big inspiration. it turns out the couple were notorious british serial killers who tortured, raped and killed at least ten children including their own. the donald soon took down the retweet and tweeted this message to his 2.7 million followers.

range in arkansas has declared her business a, quote, muslim free zone. in explaining her rationale on her website she says she expects backlash for her decision. she says, quote, i will do whatever is necessary to provide a safe environment for my customers even at the cost of increased threats and legal problems this decision will likely provoke. a florida family is lucky to be alive. that is an adult holding on to three children on top of a capsized boat as other adults are treading in the water. this happened during a children's fishing tournament off the florida coast in the gulf of mexico this weekend. the family says there was a mechanical problem. the newest addition of the clinton family, new video showing the proud parents and baby charlotte as well as proud grandparents, bill and hillary right there leaving a new york hospital last night. it bringsing to the image of a year ago when the world waited in anticipation for another similar baby debut, prince george. maybe charlotte will bring
