headquarters in new york, this is "nbc nightly news" with lester holt. good evening. a troubling turn in the health of a man who arrived in this country last month. apparently already infected with ebola. doctors in dallas say his condition is downgraded to critical and family members are suggesting his condition is deteriorating. and as duncan fights for his life, a close look for those in contact with him as they are still in the dangerous incubation period. duncan's condition is one of several important developments we're following on the ebola front this evening. so let's get started with mark potter in dallas. >> reporter: good evening, lester. the mood here in dallas is somber after word about the patient is not doing well and dozens of people who had contact with him are being tested for the disease. in a liberian community church

near dallas, the congregation prayed for thomas eric duncan recovery and for the protection from ebola for all that came in contact with him. >> we're going to pray for mr. duncan and his family and all those working to get this man back to health. >> reporter: his condition appears to have worsened. on saturday and today the hospital listed him in critical condition. a downturn from friday when he was classified as serious. family members in north carolina say doctors told them he was on a respirator and a dialysis machine, a far cry from last week when he could talk to relatives by phone from the isolation unit. >> we understand his situation has taken a turn for the worse. we know that ebola is a very serious disease and we're hoping for his recovery. >> reporter: health officials say they are regularly testing 38 people who may have had contact with dungeon and ten others who had direct contact,

including his girlfriend louis who was visiting when he was sick. from an undisclosed location she said she and those with her are healthy. >> everybody okay? >> yes. >> and nobody has any fever or any other symptoms? >> no. >> and are you being tested by health officials? do they come see you? >> yes, they do. zblrveg >> reporter: so far nobody except duncan has shown signs of ebola infection. george mason, the senior pastor at the wilshire bastist church said the reason duncan came to the u.s. was he planned to be married. >> as it turns out eric dungeon did leave liberia to come here and plan a wedding with louise. >> and the third health care worker to be infected and treated in omaha, entered a massachusetts hospital yesterday with a fever and a cough. authorities tested him and

saying it highly unlikely he's had a recurrence of ebola. back here in dallas, the officials say the monitoring period for symptoms lasts three weeks, meaning those being checked out now have two more weeks to go before they can be cleared. lester. >> mark, thanks. the other part of this ebola story we're following, another american infected with the virus is on his way home to this country. he's a freelance cameraman working for nbc news when he was diagnosed. he'll be treated in omaha nebraska. and nbc's kate snow is there for us tonight. kate? >> reporter: lester, good evening. ashoka muckpo's father said he is counting the minutes before he can get here back to the united states. he is doing pretty well. he is walking and eating and drinking on his own, all good signs and the team at the bio containment here, about 40 in the staff, are ready to treat him. >> later today the man boarded a

plane in liberia and after nine hours in the air he will land in nebraska and taken to the medical center. >> we'll put him in an ambulance prepare ad ahead of time. >> reporter: he had been cared for in africa with doctors without border. >> this is where the patient would come in. >> this is where the patient x would come in and it has a video screen and once they look out and see who you are, they let you in. >> where would the patient go? >> reporter: this is one of the best centers and the doctor gave me a tour. air inside is especially filtered before it leaves so it is germ-free and anything that touches ashoka. >> anything, linens, bed clothing, silverware. >> it goes into this machine

conference. >> kate snow, thank you. the parents of another american threatened by beheaded by isis terrorists have pleaded for his life. they spoke of their son's conversion to islam and helping refugees. the former army ranger was abducted in syria one year ago. his parents kept silent of the kidnapping at the wish of those who held their son. meanwhile isis fighters continue their assault in syria, including one along the turkish border which is where we get this report from richard engel. >> reporter: from a hill in turkey overlooking syria, we've watched isis fighters advance for days on the sit of kobani and the towns around it. they move tactically. in groups. they are skilled. this is what the battles look

like up close. the fighters who took these images are from a kurdish militia trying to defend kobani from isis. with rpg's and a determination to hold the line. but determination might not be enough. their enemy drives a tank, turning toward them. the tank was captured from the syrian army. with only light arms it could be a matter of time before the kurdish fighters in kobani are overrun. there is a force that could help. the turkish army is a few yards away from the border, so close they can hear the battles but they have no orders to intervene for now. turkey has deployed thousands of troops to protect the country, but the turkey president wants them to cross these borders to fight isis. >> he advised his troops to

enter syria and iraq and to allow foreign sources to use territory against isis. >> but syria's foreign ministry is warning turkey if their troops cross the border to fight isis, there may be consequences. refugees here say they welcome any help. the 42 members of this family live in a garage in turkey, young and old together, sleeping on the floor. >> this man has a simple message. we need help and to go home, he said. >> reporter: richard engel, nbc news on the turkish-syrian border. in japan, a powerful typhoon. this shows the enormous of the storm moving toward the main land after hitting the island of okinawa and sweeping away american servicemen who were taking pictures of the waves. jim is in tokyo tonight. >> reporter: in 13 hours, tokyo

will take a direct hit. typhoon phanfone is bearing down with wind gusts of 100 to 150 miles per hour and dumping a foot and a half of rain in its path. there were orders to stay indoors, which is not he's he's -- not easy on a work day. and one tragic in okinawa when u.s. airmen based nearby were taking photos of other servicemen in front of breaking waves when they were swept away. one clinged to rocks and another one drowned and two more are missing. and they thought the worst of the storm had passed. >> thank you. in washington a new interrupt director of the secret service takes over tomorrow. joseph clancy is a 30-year veteran of the service who has

protected presidents back to bill clinton. now with the agency in turmoil he faces what may be his biggest challenge. our report from nbc's kristen welker. >> reporter: 58-year-old joseph clancy takes the reins tomorrow of an agency in crisis, from a fence-jumping intruder making his way into the white house to stunning revelations that a man rode the elevator with the president last month. >> it is falling apart. >> reporter: the agency has suffered a series of embarrassments starting when the salahis crashed the president's state dinner and in 2011 it took four days for them to discover a gunman's bullets hit the residence. and in 2012 several agents were fired after soliciting prostitutes on a trip to columbia. julia pierson was brought in after that to clean up the

agency. but she resigned this week under pressure. >> believe me, it did not begin with her and it is not going to end with her leaving. there are still people that probably need to go. >> sense the fence-jumping incident there have been small fixes. the public is being kept away from the fence line with this new barrier. but the bigger issue is low morale. >> clancy was the top pick, heading mr. obama's security detail for more than two years. >> he has tremendous competence of the first family and highly respected within the organization. >> reporter: for the past three years he ran secret at comcast, nbc's parent company but some argue the agency needs someone who is a genuine outsider. >> i do think it needs to be a fresh view of what is happening at the secret service, not someone who is ingrained in the culture there existing now. >> reporter: on "meet the press," dan pheifer said for now

the administration is giving clancy a chance. >> we're going to let joe clancy get there and look at it and begin to steer the agency in the right direction and we'll see who the right fit is. >> reporter: clancy has asked for a briefing tomorrow on what has changed since the jumping intruder. mean land the department of homeland security will have a panel for more suggestions of a permanent secret service director. >> kristen welker at the white house, thank you. call for action in ferguson, moes two months after a police officer killed mr. brown. they lowered banners and released paper arts and marched out by numbers. there were new calls for the immediate arrest of officer darren wilson for the grand jury

we thought it would be fun to take a look at the off-shoot of the game that for many of us is an off-shoot. but don't tell that to one town where it is whiffle ball that packs them in. this is kevin tibbles. >> this is an all-american love story, about a childhood past time. >> sean and i grew up playing whiffle ball. we played in front of the house. if we hit the house it was a triple, if we hit it over the house, it was a home run. >> they are an irish american family. when dad retired he took over a bar. >> i like doing it and it keeps me busy. i think i will be busy until the day i die. >> but his dream was cut short when in 2011 a tornado destroyed the bar. ken soon reopened at a new location but business just wasn't the same. then son joe had another dream.
