an american infected with ebola is now on u.s. soil. nbc news freelance cameraman ashoka mukpo left liberia sunday. his plane stopped in maine early monday. mukpo is en route to nebraska for treatment. this is our first image of the plane, on the ground briefly in bangor it refuel. we start with nbc's jay gray in dallas and breaking news on thomas eric duncan. >> reporter: good morning. for the last two days the coming out of the isolation unit has not been good. doctors and relatives telling us that thomas eric duncan's condition is deteriorating. the struggle to save thomas eric duncan's life continues this morning inside an isolation unit at texas health presbyterian hospital after his condition was downgraded over the weekend from serious to critical. >> i pray for you to get well. >> reporter: relatives in north carolina say after talking with him by phone last week, doctors now tell them he's on a respirator and dialysis machine.

>> we understand his situation has taken a turn for the worse. we know that ebola is a very serious disease and we're hoping for his recovery. >> reporter: a second american battling the deadly virus, freelance journalist ashoka mukpo is aboard a specially kwpd medevac jet right now where he'll immediately begin treatment at the same medical center that successfully treated u.s. relief doctor rick sacra. >> i'm so relieved he's coming back to an environment where he can get the simplest of medal care, which is intravenous fluids that really is life saving in the ebola virus. >> reporter: a virus that public health teams are confident they can stop from spreading in the u.s. >> we have no doubt that we will stop it in its tracks in texas. >> reporter: the centers for disease control is currently monitoring a group of close to 40 people, including ten who had direct contact with duncan and remain quarantined right now. to this point no one in that

group has shown any symptoms of the virus. they'll continue to be monitored by the cdc for the next couple of weeks. in dallas, jay gray, dara, back to you. >> and an update on dr. rick sacra's condition. tests show he's not suffering from a recurrence of ebola. he was hospitalized saturday in massachusetts with a cough and fever. the cdc said sacra has a respiratory infection. ebola jitters has many americans wondering can the u.s. contain it. in west africa, frustration. supplies needed to fight the exploding epidemic aren't being delivered. nbc's tracie potts is live in washington. tracie, the head of the cdc will be at the white house today. what can we expect? >> reporter: we can expect dr. frieden will be updating the president on what they're doing on the ground right now. especially in dallas where jay said they're now monitoring nearly 40 people, plus ten health care workers and family members who were in contact with thomas duncan when he first

became symptomatic. they want to make sure that disease doesn't spread. they are also working with border patrol people who are coming into this country, their temperature is being taken, questions being asked. cdc said they turned away 77 people from coming into the united states as a result of that screening. >> tracie, more troops may be sent to liberia. do we have a number? >> reporter: 3600, more than the 3,000 they said. these are troops headed over for a number of different things, to go to hospitals and facilities around six different african countries to try to help contain this, help treat the people who are there. they're also going to eventually be doing some training, not directly treating patients, but treati i training african authorities how to treat this and keep it isolated. >> tracie potts reporting live from washington, d.c. now a touching tribute from the father of the 4-year-old new jersey boy who health officials confirm died of enterovirus

d-68. eli waller's death is the first that is directly linked to the respiratory virus. he stayed home from school on september 25th with what his parents thought was pink eye. he was asymptomatic when he went to sleep that night and he never woke up the next day. according to the cdc, more than 500 people in 43 states have come down with the enterovirus. in a statement, his father remembers him as a shy little puppy who wants only to make people proud and happy, maybe tripping a bit over his own paws, but truly full of unconditional love. eli was the youngest of a set of triplets. now following the latest on isis, we learned a u.s. aid worker being held captive by the terror group wrote a letter to his parents saying he's afraid to die. the parents of peter kassig say he was taken captive in syria last year. they say he wrote them a letter last year, which said in part, i am obviously pretty scared to die, but the hardest part is not knowing, wonder, hoping and wondering if i should even hope

at all. meanwhile, british prime minister david cameron is pressing leaders to do everything possible to track down the man seen in all four isis beheading videos. cameron says military leaders must step up efforts and possibly send special forces. back at home, kelly ayotte told fox news she's worried the president is only confining isis as a way to help democrats in the upcoming midterms. >> i think what we have here, chris, is a problem where the president's foreign policy is being trapped by his campaign rhetoric, and i'm very fearful that as we look at the current military strategy, that it is surrounding the november elections. >> while on tour to promote his new movie "gone girl," ben affleck appeared on hbo's bill maher and got into a heat deed bait over muslim. he argued with maher that not all muslims share the same views as radical islamists. >> i'm not denying that certain people are bigoted against muslims as people.

>> good morning to you, bill. >> a hot weekend in the west. i mean, temperatures, san diego jets game, and people were roasting there in san diego in the stands. that continued pretty much for the last three days, a little break, temperatures cooled down just to be above average instead of near record highs. yesterday was 95 in l.a. 89 in san diego. remember, these temperatures are in the shade. 87 in san francisco. so you get the idea. it was a very, very warm weekend. now all of the interest, not so much for california, nevada, oregon or washington or idaho, but for arizona. what will happen with our latest eastern pacific tropical system. this one has weakened significantly. now barely a tropical storm. this one is going to try to bring some of its moisture up to southern arizona, not a lot, it doesn't look like. the possibility of getting a little bit of added moisture and rain, tucson area of phoenix. not today, mostly tuesday night and then maybe even into wednesday. so, again, that's really the only thing of interest otherwise is just pretty much sunny and

malaysia flight 370 are back in the indian ocean. the search is put on hold for four months so crews could map the area, map the search area. three ships will concentrate on a 23,000 square mile stretch of the indian ocean using a new high resolution map of the ocean floor. the plane vanished in march with 239 people on board. she was just about to say yes, but then the hot air balloon that a couple was riding in went off course. and ended up floating above the waves near san diego. onlookers helped the couple land on shore. after the boyfriend threw a line to the water, hoping that their wedding goes a little less jittery. it is rehab for 18-time gold medalist michael phelps. the announcement comes one week after being busted for his second dui. in his tweet yesterday, he told fans, quote, i'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help i need to better understand myself. tonight, teresa and joe giudice will sit down with real

no updates have been made to king's condition since saturday. and paul revere, leader of the 1960s band paul revere and the raiders, died on saturday. he was known as the mad man of rock 'n' roll for his wild wardrobe and on stage persona. the cause of death was cancer. paul revere was 76 years old. charlie sheen is being sued by a dental technician who accuses the actor of attacking her during his appointment and grabbing her bra. sheen's publicist revealed he did knock over a dental tray, but other elements of the story are not true. he also revealed he was taking medication for a shoulder injury during the time of the incident but no illegal substances as original reports claimed. and taylor swift is moving on and she's going to help contestants on the voice choose songs that match their own strength. that will be fun to watch. and who needs barbie and ken when you can have kim and kanye. baby northwest has custom made

and other stories we're following, police in georgia are looking for two suspected hardware store thieves who threw chainsaws at officers. it happened during a high speed chase. investigators are trying to enhance this dash cam video to help identify the suspects. it is official, a new museum under construction in washington, d.c. will be called the museum of the bible. steve green, the president of hobby lobby and founder of the museum said he's been collecting thousands of artifacts for the past several years. over the weekend, coast guard crews came to the rescue of a man who was floating in a giant bubble off the coast of miami. now that man says he wants his bubble back. according to the miami -- >> wouldn't you want your bubble back in. >> i could put one in my backyard, right? now the miami herald reports his passport, green card, phone and more were all in the bubble, which rescuers left in the ocean. >> i think he left it when the rescuer r ers came and got him. he has a honing beacon. want to go get it?
