6:00 am
shots ring out at walmart. >> and the the nbc cameraman with the ebola virus lands. >> and a big pattern change in the weather coming your way. >> and things heating up as far as the commute is concern. these flashing lights, i'll explain what's going on coming up. >> and let's take a live look outside on this monday morning. can you make it out? that is the golden gate bridge. it's october 6th.
6:01 am
this is "today in the bay." >> and a very good monday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. police are still on the scene of an east bay walmart after an alleged shoplifter opened up fire at the walmart in san leandro. that is where we find nanette miranda. this really shook some people up. good morning. >> definitely. it looks like the store just opened, as it does every morning at 6:00 a.m. witnesses say gunshot rang out at this walmart just before closing around midnight. this created some very scary moments for customers. according do some shoppers, a loss prevention worker confronted alleged shoplifters. s they say one of the suspects
6:02 am
pulled out a gun and one witness believes he heard eight round, which sent people scrambling for cover. many said they found safety in a back room of the walmart. at first they thought the situation wasn't real. we never would have thought it was a gunshot until we started hearing people screaming and then we heard more gunshot and then we realized it was real, it wasn't a joke. >> police say two suspects were arrested. one of them had to be taken to the hospital for minor injuries. based on surveillance footage, cops say they're confident that the suspects they took into custody are the only two involved. >> as scary as the situation was, there were no injuries, no one was hurt. one witness said that that security guard grabbed the suspect's arm stopping the shooting and thereby probably
6:03 am
saving some lives. again, the store just reopened, as it does every morning at 6:00 a.m. the store normally closes from midnight to 6 and that was enough time to investigate the situation and now cops have just recently left the scene. live, nanette miranda for "today in the bay." >> an amazing act of courage by that security guard. thanks, nan eettenanette. >> a fire gutted a wine store destroying hundreds of bottles of wine. police saw a homeless person they recognized near the fire. police found the man with item they say he stole from the building. he was arrested and booked on arson, burglary.
6:04 am
this attack happened shortly before kickoff. we do not know how badly they were injured. police arrested two men on felony assault charges. no word on the motive or whether the suspects had weapons on them. the attack happened with more than 68,000 fans inside of the stadium. >> police are looking for two men for beating a 43-year-old man as he and a relative were walking to their car. the victim we're told is in critical condition. >> a developing story just minutes ago. an nbc freelance cameraman arrives at a nebraska hospital
6:05 am
after contracting ebola in liberia. ashoka mukpo tested positive for ebola thursday and was quarantined immediately. his plane made a brief stop in maine to refuel and then continued on to nebraska. it is one of the few facilities in the u.s. with expertise with ebola after successfully treating a doctor. >> the rest of the nbc team, including dr. nancy snyderman, will also be quarantined in the u.s. for about three weeks. the health with the first person diagnosed with ebola in the united states is getting worse. doctors say the condition of thomas duncan was downgraded from serious to critical.
6:06 am
they say he's on a respirator and dialysis machine. >> so how will the president respond? this morning he will sit down with the director of the cdc for an update on the outbreak in west africa and what is being done here in the u.s. to keep the virus from spreading. much more on that coming up in a live report from washington d.c. at 6:30. >> it is 6:06 now on your monday morning. time to check your forecast as we take a live picture of san bruno. we hope the only heat you'll be experiencing this week is from the san francisco giants. >> we sure hope they bring the heat. san francisco socked in with fog. i think weather is going to impact the game out there. wait till i show you my in-depth analysis coming up in a bit. right now let's talk about what
6:07 am
the entire bay area will experience today. that's a stronger onshore flow. for us that means the cool ocean air will be back. in san francisco you're getting a straight wind out of the west at 9 miles an hour. that is a cooling trend for everybody, as we head throughout the day today. i'm taking your temperatures down by a good 5 to 10 degrees from where we ended up yesterday. we do have that really thick fog, especially at half moon bay at this point and all the way up to the golden gate bridge. you really want to take it easy this morning. then that fog will spill in over our coastal mountains just as it tiply does. your temperatures will continue to fall. 95 for the north bay, 82 for today in san francisco. i think this is the last day in your 80s for quite some time.
6:08 am
>> all right pfrp we're welcoming in the fog as well, but the visibility issues not so welcome. you can see the glow to the lights, can't even make out that south tower. visibility on the span is an issue. may maybe. >> we had some flashing lights showing up on the top of your screen. the flashing lights are basically portable offices, i guess, you nope the ones they set up at construction sites. they're making their way through the toll plaza. i'm going to track them across the bridge as best i can. but no issues or problems anticipated as a result of that larger crew heading across, maybe a little slow driving for the time being.
6:09 am
typically south into fremont, a little build over there through the tri-valley. >> we wake up a little earlier but we're happy to be here. >> a lot earlier. >> two political heavyweights square off right here on the nbc area debate. it's their one and only debate. details coming up. >> and hewlett packard to split in two. we'll take a look at what it means coming up. >> and a live look at at&t park. why today might be an extraordinary day. the giants going for a sweep of the washington nationals to advance in the playoffs. how the team is helping you play some hooky today. we'll explain when we come back.
6:10 am
6:11 am
6:12 am
welcome back. taking a live look at san francisco, the golden gate bridge socked in with fog. you might think that's going to lead to a significant cooldown. well, not just yet. as we head throughout tomorrow, you'll definitely notice the difference. today stays hot. the big news, big pattern change coming your way with the inclusion of some much-needed rainfall. more on that in just moments. >> and of course the pattern holding up steady for the east bay. not at the coliseum like we're looking here. but north of the bay bridge toll
6:13 am
plaza and south toward the san mateo bridge as well. >> and here are today's top stories. of a 6:12, two alleged shoplifters are in custody after one opened up fire inside a san leandro walmart. witnesses tell us two men tried stealing something and when confronted, one of them pulled out a gun and fired around eight shots. no one was injured. >> and a fire in a wine shop destroyed one building and wine. >> and get ready. congressman mike honda and ro khanna, the upstart, will be facing off in their debate. >> in about 15 minutes,
6:14 am
investors will get to show their opinion of the latest move on hewlett packard splitting into two companies. >> this is not the first time, scott mcgrew, that hp broke into two. >> that's right. it broke with agilent in the mid 90s. the new company will be hp enterprises, it will handle servers and the other will be plain hp and that will sell printers and computers. meg whitman is appointed to be the ceo. our guess is investors are going to like this idea. at least in the short term, the stock market is coming off a huge win friday. the dow is up better than 200 points. turning to the war in
6:15 am
afghanistan and taliban, one of the big tension there is is the number of fighters who pass between afghanistan and pakistan. pakistan at least on paper is supposed to be on our side, right? it's not supposed to be sheltering taliban, which made it extra embarrassing on friday when the spokesperson for the taliban posted his tweet. he forgot to turn off his geolocation feature and it shows him tweeting from pakistan. twitter for its part didn't get involved but does remind people that once you post something online, it's out there, sam and lawyer rarks for everyone to see. >> technology will get you every time. >> bring out the brooms. this is the day giants going for a sweep and a ticket to the national league championship series. the grounds crew hard at work making sure the field is perfectly prepped for today's postseason showdown against the washington nationals.
6:16 am
>> the giants -- stephanie, beating traffic could be tough but if you want to go and get tickets, that might be an even harder feat to accomplish. >> reporter: good morning. it really depends how much you want to spend. there are tickets available but again, how much do you want to pay? you can get standing room only. $80 to $73 the last half hour or seats behind the dugout, good premium location at $3,500 to $5,600. so the team that returned yesterday morning, no doubt tired but very happy to be home winning the two away games, their record setting 18-inning game on saturday the longest in both inning and time for a postseason game ever, only ending when the nationals could not answer in the bottom of the 18th after brandon belt's homer
6:17 am
put the giants up by 1. they look to their ace pitcher today, madison bumgarner to get that sweep and sounds like he's ready. >> for me, myself, i think a lot of people when you do that, you start -- you kind of -- you don't play as good a baseball as you should. >> even keeled, known as madbum. the giants hope for a win today and would face either the l.a. dodgers or the cardinals, we shall see. locally here in the area, lunchtime is already pretty bad when people are getting here along king street. and then depending on when the game ends, how long it goes, maybe 18, we're hoping not for the giants to clinch with a
6:18 am
sweep. it could be the same time as rush hour. we'll have to see about that. if you're trying to get that special ferry, that's already sold out. and no parking at the terminal. and mike has been reminding us the whole morning on that. but back to you guys for now. >> the giants have their ace on the mound. thank you very much, stephanie. >> a lot of people want to watch it. fans might have to ditch work to get to today's game. the team tweeted out this excuse note for you that says "please excuse this san francisco giants be fan which has come out with a case of orange october. irchlt the. >> what about the forecast?
6:19 am
it's been quite warm lately. how will it be over at at&t park? here's meteorologist christina loren. >> they ducked the heat, the first time, because they were out of town. >> they're coming back to kind of in between. the good news is that wind is likely going to play a factor and our boys know how to behave when the wind is blowing out towards center field. all it's going to take is a good 15 to 25 mile-per-hour wind gust to pick up and carry that ball. watch for the flags to blow out in that direction for the start of the game. then by about the fifth, sixth inning you'll notice the ball turning more toward mccovey cove. we could be talking about a splashdown before the day is done. we're talking about 56 in beautiful san jose. i hope you had a great weekend. i know it was kind of hot. it doesn't look like we're going to return for those levels, at least for the next 15 to 20 days. i think we are going to be done with the triple digit heat.
6:20 am
mostly clear inland valley to kick off the day. that means it's going to be hot later on today. you will notice more coastal cloud moving in and for us that's really going to bring in cooling for tomorrow. one more day with mid 90s close to the trenttory mark. 81 degrees on the east shore. traffic looking good. if you're getting ready to leave, hold up for one second. >> 84 degrees for tuesday, 83 by wednesday. we will enjoy the 70s by thursday. for the weekend temperatures are going to creep up just gradually. we'll get to about 83 degrees at best by sunday before those numbers crash and we get a major -- i mean major pattern change. here's mike and your drive. >> i showed you the live look at san jose 101 right here at 680. we saw a good amount of company
6:21 am
but traffic was flowing smoothly, looks even smoother now. we're looking for the next burst to kick in over the next 10 to 15 minutes. 87 right now looking really good up into downtown san jose. that's a treat. so we'll savor that moment. over here for the tri-valley, we have your typical build, a smooth flow of traffic now through pleasanton. and then continuing down where folks are merging off of 84. no problems as you head down through fremont. a typical pattern for the tri-valley as well. pretty typical here. past 880 and dunn barton bridge and also toward the bay bridge, no big surprises toward these routes. the smooth drive for westbound. a clear view over to the peninsula where we can't make out much light over there. the bay bridge has seen it from time to time.
6:22 am
our live look at the bay bridge toll plaza does not reflect that but you can see from time to time we can't see the hill. but the past track is moving pretty well. our cam ro froze but you can see it's still the glow of the lights. as steph told you, expect a lot of traffic in through town with the giants game as you approach that noontime hour. >> thanks a lot, mike. >> sunday night football comes to a standstill to honor a young girl battling cancer. the emotional tribute just ahead. >> and look at that. the sun coming up this morning making for a beautiful sky. lots more ahead. stick around.
6:23 am
6:24 am
6:25 am
welcome back, everyone. taking a live look outside. at&t park quiet now but it will be loud and rowdy a little later today. giants hoping to sweep the nationals. the game is at -- >> 2:00. >> a little after 2:00. the cincinnati bengals player whose young daughter is battling cancer sharing their stories today in hopes of raising
6:26 am
awareness. >> new england played a video tribute for this player's young daughter, 4-year-old leya. that move brought still to tears, as he watched from the sidelines, sporting a black nasal strip with the words leya strong. nbc did an interview and asked what it was like to tell the toddler she was so sick. >> she was crying. i remember her looking at me and saying, dad, this is all your fault, you should have never brought me to the hospital. i broke down crying because i didn't know what to say. >> how do you explain a concept that deep to a young child? you can watch this entire interview on the "today" show coming up in about 30 minutes at 7:00 this morning. >> let's hope she gets okay and
6:27 am
pulse ou pulls out. >> the opening bell just minutes away. >> plus back in the u.s., the nbc cameraman who contracted ebola while in africa. now in nebraska for treatment.
6:28 am
6:29 am
and cooling kicks in toward the mid section of your week. then we have a pattern change and it does include days of rainfall. >> and it also includes a morning of fog in parts of the bay area. also some slowing here. we're looking at fremont over my shoulder. we have a lot of folks heading down from 680 and 880 and an incident off the curve as you leave the toll plaza. >> wall street coming off a huge win on friday, some good jobs number. hewlett packard splitting in two
6:30 am
companies. we'll take a look at that and what that means over on the nasdaq, the open as well coming in just a few seconds from now. lots of excitement over hp. all right, we'll see where the money goes and we'll see where the balls go this afternoon, we're hoping for an orange october. this is "today in the bay." >> and a good orange monday. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> a developing story to tell you about. just minutes ago an nbc freelance cameraman arrived in a nebraska hospital after contracting the ebola virus.
6:31 am
tracie potts is live in washington with the very latest. good morning. >> let's start with ashoka mukpo, that nbc photographer who is now in omaha. he's in a containment unit, the same one that held dr. sacra. in addition to ashoka mukpo, who his family has said was doing fairly well at the time when they first learned about it, there's also the patient in dallas and the cdc is watching 48 people there who they say had some level of contact with him while he was contagious. over the weekend his situation deteriorated to critical. meantime today president obama is getting an update on all this from the cdc, including how they plan to help stop this virus from spreading into the united states. the cdc and nih have all said
6:32 am
they don't expect any sort of outbreak here. the pentagon has decided to send an extra 600 people over to west africa to try to contain it overseas. >> tracie potts live from washington, thank you. >> and in washington, a new interim director takes over the secret service today. joseph clancy has protected presidents all the way back to bill clinton. former director julia pierson resigned last week under pressure following a series of presidential security breaches. joseph clancy was the president and first lady's top pick here, having headed mr. obama's security detail for more than two years. the time now is 6:32 on this monday morning as we take a live look outside at san jose. the sun coming up, the feelings are strong, emotional today as we watch our san francisco giants taking on the washington nationals in san francisco. to find out what the weather is
6:33 am
going to look like, check it out with meteorologist christina loren. >> i'm glad you asked, sam. let's look at the current conditions and then we're going to dive into the conditions at at&t park. weather will play a factor if you're watching it from the park or at home -- or work if you're us -- so let's talk about that game. 2:00, 83 degrees out there. it's going to be warm out there for the start of that game, even tailgating, but that's when the high will come in. temperatures will continue to drop as we head through the course of the game. 83 degrees, you're down to 80 by 4 p.m. we have an area of wind moving in and high pressure will high tail it out. winds not only are going to
6:34 am
shift but they're going to strengthen. you'll see all those flags blowing toward the scoreboard and toward the end of the game, the flags will be blowing toward mccovey code. i thi -- cove. and i think there's a chance you'll be able to give your a.c. a break. by tomorrow, most of the bay area can get by without the a.c. 81 for the east shore, san francisco at 82, stacking up out here, mike. let's take a look at your drive. >> good morning, christina. it's stacking up by the coliseum. so far we anticipate that volume heading down toward the san mateo bridge as well. we'll get a smooth drive westbound with the taillights and the high rise. not a major problem as far as visibility, you're fine here.
6:35 am
the build for the commute coming out of oakland, yellow turns to orange and down toward union city, your typical flow of traffic. actually a little slow coming down through san ram own. good volume of traffic off of 580 westbound. that is unusual through dublin. hayward also slow. a smoother flow into the south bay. we're looking at west 24 there farther north. we do have a fender bender. just your typical build off of pleasant hill and the rest of your bay after that. a pretty predictable path there. the clouds are starting to move around there. so a little visibility on the span itself. the golden gate bridge not so much. we have flashing lights coming on the pedestrian walkway. no problems reported on the span itself.
6:36 am
you do want to lower the speed. in fog we always remind folks use your standard headlights. watch out for particulate matter. >> 6:36 right now. the markets have been open for a few minutes now. >> let's check the numbers with scott mcgrew. >> good morning. the dow industrials adding about 80 points. we're particularly watching hewlett packard. they're up 4%, almost 5% now to 3687, the day that the company said it would split in two. we'll have more about that coming up. meanwhile, dow industrials up 82 points. >> sounds good. >> 6:36 on your monday. the search for the missing malaysian airline jet takes a new twist. >> and you wouldn't believe the typhoon striking tokyo last

night.
