"today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney. the crews had a hard team reaching the crash site due to the rugged terrain. >> reporter: another run at it today. highway 140, this entrance into yosemite is closed. chp here with the road closed sign up. right now take a look at the fire. calling it the dog rock fire. it started about 2:30 yesterday afternoon. it was spreading, cal fire called in the air attack, that included helicopters and s2t air tanker to drop 1200 gallons of fire retardant. about 4:30, a craft slammed into the side of the cliff, killing the pilot. the only person on board. rescue crews had to get through difficult terrain to get to the site. they say the plane had disintegrated. the family's asked the pilot's name not be released yet. it was a military aircraft designed in the 50s to drop torpedoes. cal fire purchased a couple

dozen and used for many years to drop fire retardant. they have had an incident in 2001, two of them crashed in midair fighting a fire. the cause of this crash is still under investigation. as we've mentioned, highway 120 -- rather, 140 closed. you want to foe to yosemite national park, 41 as well as 120 are still open investigation into the crash and what caused this fire in the first place under way. live near yosemite, terry mcscem mcsweeney. the new fire is miles away from another large fire, the meadow fire, sparked last month, burning close to 5,000 acres before contained. the meadow fire spread quickly, catching a lot of people off guard. this gopro video, shot by a daly city man, when the fire moved up their way. the group rushed through the forest to get to safety.

new details on officer-involved shooting near at&t park. gunman is dead and officer is on administrative leave this morning. shooting happened near second and bryant, just as last night's giants game was ending. stephanie chuang live in san francisco. what led the officer to actually open fire? >> reporter: good morning to you. well, police say it all began when officers witnessed three people in a four-dur sedan casing this area, vehicles here. a few blocks away from at&t park, that way on jack london alley. cars parked here. even more during a game. you can see there is broken glass there on the street. the suspects apparently parked their car just around the corner from here on the 400 block of bryant street. now police say this all went down around 9:00 last night when the giants game was still going on. officers who were assigned to patrol the area around the ballpark saw the suspects break into a mercedes suv, go back to

their car on bryant. police say that's when officers approached the suspects, saw the driver had a handgun, ordered him to drop the gun but when he allegedly refused, the officer fired his own weapon, hitting both the drive somewhere suspect. someone in the front passenger seat of the car tried to run away but police caught him almost right away. the two hit were taken to san francisco general hospital where the driver died. the second suspect is expected to survive. investigators took the third suspect in for questioning. this comes just three weeks after san francisco police shot and killed a carjacking suspect who was just publicly identified yesterday as 34-year-old giovanni sandoval of richmond. he pointed the resolvolver at officers. after he allegedly tried to kidnap a woman in richmond and led police on a car chase into san francisco and crashed in the financial district.

back here live at the scene on bryant, police say is where they recovered the driver's handgun as well as stolen property. the officer who fired his weapon has been put on paid administrative leave, and that is standard protocol. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you. for the second time in as many days as man exposed himself into a young girl walking in palo alto. bob redell is live in palo alto. they think it might sound the same guy. sounds like a repeat of what we heard yesterday. >> reporter: that's the thinking here at palo alto police department. good morning, sam. they are bumping up patrols in the area because, yes, suspect's descriptions similar. incidents happened back-to-back days, monday and tuesday, and locations very close to each other. police tell us that the last one happened last night. you can see on the map monday's happened on the 1600 block of bryant only a half mile away from yesterday's incident at the

intersection of seale and byron. last night around 6:40, a 10-year-old girl walking her dog when a man in a white volvo pulled up, asked her if she wanted to touch him, exposed himself to her, she ran home where her parents called 911. he was gone by the time officers arrived. she tells police he was a white man, late 20s or 30s, brown hair, wearing a black and blue checkered shirt with white collar. again, driving a white older model volvo sedan. though the suspect in monday's incident driving a newer navy blue full-sized pickup truck, police believe the two are connected. monday around 4:45, the suspect pulled up by a 14-year-old girl walking down a sidewalk on the 1600 block of bryant, he exposed himself and took off. she called 911 on her cell phone and gave police a similar description, again, of a white man, 20s or 30s, with brown hair. reporting live here in palo alto, bob redell, "today in the

bay." >> no less disturbing the second time around. fremont police investigating a string of robberies where thieves stole over $1 million of electronics, all caught on camera. the surveillance videos, you can see suspects walking out with computers and video production equipment. police say at least three tech businesses were hit and believe the same man were involved with all of them. workers say the criminals cased it out the week before by claiming to be building inspectors. they also say the burglars cut phone lines and network cables before they went in. unique plan to fund neighborhood security in san jose shot down by city leaders last night. san jose right now has a $17 million budget surplus. the city councilman proposed taking $2 million to combat the recent surge in home burglaries, he wants to subsidize city residents for buying alarm systems and security cameras but the council nixed the idea.

distractions from the total lunar eclipse. >> just about seeing the moon christina. where you can see through low cloud cover in spots around the bay, it might be a distraction but don't bother look up in the next three minutes, you're not going to see any evidence of that. bay bridge, we see a little evidence of a building commute but a slight build. no real problems. no metering lights, it's only 5:10. map will show you smooth drive down the east shore freeway out of 24, lafayette area. also highway 13, warren freeway, 580, 880 smoothly toward san francisco side. no big drama there farther north, an issue, this orange paint, weather data travels towards the traffic system as road weather index. thicker fog through san rafael, 101, novato, highway 37, valai yo, fog drifting around. smooth drive for the rest of the bay. no major problems, south bay and peninsula at speed. here in the tri-valley, bill out of the altamont and a quick look, expected flow of traffic,

predictable pattern. 5:10. today ac transit's board will look at b.a.r.t.'s plan to add late night weekend bus service. service could begin mid-december if a contract's worked out. ac transit would increase the number of buses along existing routes between san francisco and east bay. ac transit would start service between service and pittsburg b.a.r.t. station which would stop at stations in oakland, walnut creek, pleasant hill. 5:11. stanford professor getting a good wake-up call. >> i'd say. >> just won the nobel prize. congratulations. we'll hear from him, next. >> good news. will teenagers wear the apple watch? a look coming up in business news.

new this morning, stanford professor has just won the nobel prize in chemistry. it's for his work developing new methods allowing microscopes to see finer details than they could see them before. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us talk with the professor who had the great achievement. we won't make you say mycroscopy. >> i'll say it. it's one smart thing. w. moerner in brazil. the folks from the nobel institute couldn't reach him. he got the news from his wife instead and admits he got to react differently to the news than had he gotten the official call. the professor shares that nobel prize in chemistry with two colleagues for developing super resolve fluorescence mycroscopy. what does that mean? it means that, remember when you looked through the microscope in high school and saw all kinds of

stuff, right? his work allows scientists to see not cells but individual molecules within the cells, what he calls motors. already scientists using that technology to look at individual proteins within diseases like parkenson's, alt mimer and see things smaller than synapses between the nerves. >> if you obaserve an individua molecule, that light source -- it's a way to measure shapes and motions of how things move inside the cell. >> to bad he didn't develop better skype technology, right? we're excited to talk with him. as mr. moerner was fielding phone calls from stanford university, his wife, us, other media, people were reacting on twitter. stanford saying, congratulations, to professor william e. moerner, winner of the nobel prize, right? but that one's sterile. then they were more excited in

only 16% of teens say they would be willing to buy an apple watch. now, keep in mind apple really good coming up with things we didn't know that we wanted. remember, there were rumors of tablet computers that started to leak out, this thing that would become the ipad. nobody could figure out why they needed something that was like an iphone but bigger but didn't make phone calls and the ipad, by the way, turned out to be a success. it can be hit or miss. google glass created a huge amount of buzz and in many ways similar to the apple watch, google's larry page said people are tired of looking at their phones and that's why they'll like google glass, it brought the phone's functionality out of your pocket where you can see it. apple said something similar about the watch, it's easier to go like this than oh, wow, this is -- okay. that's worth $380. walmart is cutting its health insurance for tens of thousands of part-time employees. it appears to be a side effect

of affordable care act. part-time employees can move to the government mandated health care coverage instead of walmart's. it's raising premiums for full-time employees. walmart cutting health care for 30,000 part-timers. walmart was one of the only companies to give health care coverage to part-timers in the first place. put another way if they worked at some other big box discount store they wouldn't have health care coverage in the first place for it to be taken away. for what than worth. >> a perk for a short time. >> yeah. >> thanks so much. >> also, now no watches, relevant what it sounds like. people have replaced them with cell phone technology. >> but you can't check your control fen if someone's talking. >> something to be said for subtle subtle. >> 5:18. not subtle if you looked up in the sky. you saw something absolutely

>> good wednesday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. developing story in yosemite national park where investigators are look into the cause of a deadly crash involving a cal fire air tanker. the pilot, only one on board, died. the plane went down near the arch rock entrance of yosemite, not far from el capitan and half dome. terry mcsweeney joins us live from yosemite where the terrain made it difficult for the crews to reach the crash site. >> reporter: that's true. firefighters don't have any time to rest, mourn the loss of one of their own. highway 140 closed here, western entrance into yosemite national park. they're letting the firefighters get in and out as rapidly as possible. i want to show you something here right now. up to the top of the mountain. you can probably still see the flames burning up there. this is the arch -- the dog rock fire. take a look at video of this fire. started about 2:30 yesterday

afternoon and it was spreading rapidly, so rapidly the town was evacuated 60 people there. cal fire take nothing chances, called in the air attack, that included helicopters and air tankers. those air tankers capable of dropping 1200 gallons of fire retardant. about 4:30 one of the aircrafts slammed into the side of a cliff. crews had to fight through difficult terrain to get to the site, hoping it would be a rescue but there was no rescue. the pilot was dead. and the plane, they report, disintegrated. the family asked the pilot's name not released. the s2t, a military aircraft designed in the '50 to drop torpedoes. cal fear purchased dozens and used over the years to drop fire retardant. two crashed back in 2001 after colliding midair in mendocino county. the cause of the crash and the cause of the fire unknown here. but a very difficult day for

"today in the bay's" bob redell live at police headquarters there the latest victim younger than the first one. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam. recall on monday palo alto police looking for a man who flashed a 14-year-old girl. now they're looking for what they believe is the same man who last night flashed a 10-year-old girl. this happened again not far from p.d. here in downtown palo alto at the intersection of seale and byron, this 10-year-old girl last night 6:40 walking her dog

when a man in a white vol svo pulled up, asked her if she wanted to touch him and exposed himself. she ran home, where her parents called 911. by the time police arrived, this man was gone. i want to put up a map on the screen. you can see how close the flash attack last night was to the one that happened 24 hours prior. you can see location of byron and seale and less than a mile away, a half mile away, actually, monday attack on the 1600 block of bryant. that instance, a 14-year-old girl walking down the sidewalk, around 4:45 in the evening, and in this instance, a man in a newer navy blue full-sized pickup pulled up, trailing behind her, and finally they made eye contact and in that instance he exposed her, took off. this girl, the 14-year-old, called 911 on her cell phone. again, police arrived in this man was long gone.

in both instances, you do have a similar suspect description that was given by the girls. he's a white man, either in late 20s, early 30s, and has dark hair. even though the man yesterday was driving a older sedan, white volvo and the man on monday driving a newer navy blue pickup truck, police believe these incidents are related. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> if that is the case, we hope we find the person responsible. the two men who police say responsible for causing chaos inside a san leandro walmart could enter pleas in court today. cruz charged with attempted murder, robbery, using a gun. and lovato charged with robbery using a gun. two were trying to shoplift in a san leandro walmart sunday when they were confronted by security officer. cruz reportedly pulled out a gun, fired several shots at

guard. both men were arrested. a follow-up now, san jose state holding a meeting to let the public know about developments with the task force formed after alg an alleged hate crime occurred on campus. that commission was created after three of four students accused of bullying a black minority roommate were expelled last year. the fourth student was suspended. investigators put say they put a u-shaped bike lock around his neck and made fun of him for the color of his skin. an officer-involved shooting in san francisco, one suspect is dead, another recovering at the hospital. it happened blocks from at&t park near second and bryant, just as last night's giants game was ending. just a few blocks away from at&t ballpark here at jack london alley. shattered glass, this is not uncommon along the streets here. last night with the big giants game, extra officers patrolled the area and some officers saw people park their car around the corner on the 400 block of bryant street after it appeared they had been casing side streets. police say around 9:00 the suspects broke into a mercedes suv parked on jack london alley. the officers approached, saw the driver with a handgun, ordered him to drop it but when he allegedly refused the officer fired his own gun, hitting both driver and a suspect in the backseat. someone in the front passenger seat tried to run away but police caught him 50 feet away. two hit by gunfire were taken to san francisco general hospital, where the driver died. the second suspect expected to survive. investigators took the third suspect in for questioning. this happens a day after we learned identity of a carjacking

prize in chemistry with two colleagues who developed super resolve fluorescence microscopy, looking through the microscope even finer than it was when we were back in school. talking about the teeniest molecules within cells which allow scientists to look at connections between -- synapses between nerves and individual proteins in diseases like parkinson's and alzheimer's. >> if you can observe an individual molecule, that molecule is like a light source on objects inside the cell, and so that light source is a way to measure the shapes and motions of how things move inside the cell. >> now we got to talk with him right after he learned that news this morning. but he was also fielding phone calls from colleagues at stanford where he's been since 1998 and other media outlets as well. people were reacting on twitter,
