taxicab slams into another suv. details are coming up next. and a woman is killed in a hit-and-run accident while walking in a crosswalk. and a mid-air scare. what passengers heard and saw moments before they returned to the airport. and it will be dry and chilly heading throughout your thursday. rain between now and then. we'll get a bit of a break before the weekend. the moral of the story, a pattern change. we'll give you details for the microclimate in a moment. and the bay bridge toll plaza has a backup. we'll show you the backups through vallejo coming up. it's tuesday, october 14th. as we take a live look outside overlooking san francisco, fall is finally in the air, this is "today in the bay."
6:01 am
a very good tuesday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> we have an update on octavia street that is now back open following a violent crash between a taxicab and suv. you can see the mangled cab there. right now police are searching for a passenger who ran away from the scene. the driver of the jeep we are told ran a red light and hit that cab. the driver tried to make a run for it, tripped and was caught by police. officers are still looking for a passenger from the jeep. three people were hospitalized but they all have non-life-threatening injuries. the crash happened 3:30 on octavia street near page street. police are looking for a driver who hit and killed a woman in a crosswalk and took off. it happened at 8:00 last night at 33rd and mckee road. the woman was in the crosswalk at the time. bob redell is joining us live at that intersection. one that neighbors say has been
6:02 am
a problem before, bob. >> reporter: it has and they had to fight to get the crosswalk pedestrian light signal up stalled here at mckee and 34th. it's been here a year and a half. even when people activate it, the drivers weren't slowing down and that's the case. last night at 8:00, this woman who is yet to be identified by police was coming across from the neighborhood on mckee to a shopping area. she had gotten more than halfway across the crosswalk and cars were stopping. she had right away according to witnesses. an suv was apparently speeding and went through the crosswalk and ran this woman over. witnesses say the suv then stopped briefly at a traffic light about a half block away on westbound mckee and hopped on the interstate from there and hasn't been seen since. >> right now what we're looking for is either a chevy tahoe or suburban. it was light in color.
6:03 am
we don't know if it's silver, light brown or if we got good information from the witness. and right now we're investigating the incident. >> reporter: and police believe that they would have front-end damage on that chevy tahoe or suburban. again, light in color because of the impact with this woman. the woman did survive the initial impact here of mckey and 34th with a faint heartbeat when the paramedics arrived but she passed away when arriving at the hospital. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we hope they catch whoever did it. thank you. passengers are preparing to get back in the air after the flight from sfo was forced to turn back when the plane fell apart. the american airlines flight left for dallas yesterday afternoon shortly after takeoff. passengers reported hearing loud popping sounds and a ripping noise. that's when the wall inside the plane's cabin began to come loose. the terrifying moments were
6:04 am
caught on camera. >> the walls on both sides of the cabin started ripping and tearing in. we started screaming and shouting. >> after checking the damage, the pilot decided to turn back to make an emergency landing at sfo. the airline officials believe a blown air duct is to blame here. he told american airlines that they'll have another jet ready to take back to sfo this morning. right now santa clara board of trustee member sam fuller is under a temporary restraining order and is barred from interacting with the principal from the middle school where his son attends. the principal insists he sexually harassed her. and at a trkt&t park will b

rocking later today as the giants take on the cardinals. >> the winds could pick up out there as well. we certainly have the feeling in the air this morning. >> you will know when the wind picks up outside your door, maybe it's in the office or home. that's when the storm is starting to move in. good morning to you. thank you for waking up with us each and every day. happy to report a change in the weather. and it is one that we really need in the state of california. so-cal isn't getting a lot of the rain, but here from northern california through central california we are talking about some pretty decent rain starting today. a reinforcing shot friday into saturday and even more as we head between sunday into monday. so everything is changing. yesterday's heat, that's a thing of the past as of today. 61 for oakland. we'll stay nice and cool, at least through the next 10 to 15 days with this pattern change. so, i told you it was coming and it has officially arrived. we are expecting the showers to officially arrive at 1:00 in the north bay.
6:06 am
at that point we'll be nice and dry for the inland valley spots. nonetheless, we also have rain on the way to the south bay and areas surrounding san jose heading throughout probably 7:00 tonight and more so tonight into tomorrow morning. so as you head outdoors, you do want to grab the umbrella, especially as you go to work. coastal drizzle to start is a factor. getting into this afternoon, the clouds will thicken up and really stay in place all day. temps are 15 to 20 degrees cooler as we lose the sun. then as we head throughout the evening, the cold air behind the front will rush into the bay area and we'll get some rain-cooled air as well. so we're in for it now. 73 degrees in the south bay. 72 for the peninsula. 65 in san francisco 69 degrees on the east shore. not a bad day. this comes a little cooler as i
6:07 am
originally thought on the peninsula. we'll have more coming up. over here the traffic is always changing, but right now it's not changing enough. west 80 is closed at highway 37 from jamison canyon down to highway 37. i know it's backtracking that takes you into the clear area. you can also see highway 29 through the area as well as highway 4 connecting you to the upper east shore freeway. there's an overturned big rig blocking lanes. we had a tow truck that couldn't lift it and a second one had to help to clear the trailer. that's 6:30 as we look to the equipment to get there. approaching this smoothly, we might see a lighter flow of traffic down the east shore freeway because of those held up in the north bay. we have the backup at the toll plaza for all lanes at the f plaza approach. the earlier crash has cleared
6:08 am
near octavia and page this morning. the rest of the bay is seeing a typical pattern south of the bay. we'll focus on san jose northbound 101 where an earlier crash near mckee. you will see it jam up near 80 with the traffic slowly starting to recover after the crash. it's been on the center divide and is still enough of a distraction at the very crystal point of the san jose commute. folks are distracted with the lights but keep it moving on. we do not need more crashes. one place people will be is at the ballpark. >> more than 40,000 fans will pack at&t park to watch the giants square off against the cardinals in game three of the nlcs. >> now first pitch is not until 1:00 this afternoon, but our own stephanie truang snuck in early today. a clubhouse veteran has clever words for the giants rookies.
6:09 am
good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you both. it is interesting being here, so quiet and dark here. it will be very different come 1:00 this afternoon. but you have people working on cleaning the seats and you have the lovely postseason here on the field. three games here at at&t park. the giants could clench the nlcs here at home, but they do have homefield advantage. we know how crazy the giants fans get. game two was a heartbreaker after the giants tied it in the ninth only to have colton wong hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the inning to tie up the series at one apiece. hunter pence had an amazing catch in the outfield to hit the wall. the crowd energy will be on the giants side with tim hudson taking the mound with advice for the rookie ready to take game three. >> i enjoy that atmosphere. i enjoy the excitement that the
6:10 am
fans bring to the stadium. you know, for younger players, it can probably be a little overwhelming at times, but i mean, at this point in my career it's almost like a shot of coffee. >> reporter: we like to hear that. today the giants will look for some batting power. the giants have scored 16 runs in 16 games. the veteran will look to him and he had quite a bit of advice for the up and coming plays. we'll hear from him coming up in 40 minutes. live from at&t park, stephanie truang, "today in the bay." >> now if you you would just hang out there for the game. >> reporter: if only. i'm hoping. >> thank you, steph. time is 6:10. apple and facebook offer for women to pay for freezing their eggs. details are next. and the stock market has been rough and a rough day for dropbox as well. we'll take it all in in business

6:13 am
welcome back. good tuesday morning. i'm meteorologist christina loren. take a look at what to expect today. i have to tell you, temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees cooler than where we ended up yesterday. and there's rain in the works. i'll let you know when the showers are expected in your microclimate in just moments. and look over here at the
6:14 am
peninsula. an easy, light dry. predictable for 101. unpredictable is the big crash and the jam in the north bay. westbound 80 is closed near the cartinas bridge. and san francisco police right now are looking for a suspect after a crash involving a taxicab and an suv. this happened around 3:30 this morning on octavia street near page. a jeep ran a red light and hit the cab. the driver tried to make a run for it but was caught by police. officers are still looking for a passenger who did run away. three people were hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries. and san jose police are looking for a driver who hit and killed a person in a crosswalk and took off. police are looking for a light-colored chevy tahoe or suburban with significant damage to the front end. and the world health organization says there could be up to 10,000 new cases of ebola
6:15 am
over the next week. and the tech giant will now pay for their employees to freeze their eggs. a facebook spokesperson tells us the company just started covering egg freezing. apple will start offering this service in january. the companies appear to be the first major employers to offer the coverage for non-medical reasons. the procedures cost at least $10,000 per round plus $500 more for storage. it will combine a total up to $20,000. there's been a spike in the number of children exposed to liquid nicotine in e-cigarettes. more than 2700 people have called poison control to report exposure to the creme call. more than half the cases were under the age of 6 years old. a few years ago there were only a few hundred cases. exposure typically happens when parents leave bottles of nicotine out within reach of
6:16 am
their kids. it's been a rough couple of days for san francisco company dropbox. >> and scott mcgrew is here with more. >> the first is the video people are passing around showing men wearing dropbox t-shirts arguing with other men in the socker field in the mission about who should get to play on the field. here's the video. the dropbox guys say they reserved this field through the city of san francisco. the guys on the field say they were there first. some want to make this about techie hipsters versus native san franciscoans. either way, dropbox is apologizing for this. the bigger problem is it appears someone posted thousands of dropbox user names and passwords online. we made it blurry on purpose. dropbox says it wasn't hacked as the passwords were stolen through other means, but either way they are online. turning to financial news, wells fargo and intel open their
6:17 am
books to investors. wells fargo already did and intel will this afternoon. e-bay will be tomorrow. markets are concerned about the european company slowing. we're watching that snapchat situation i first gave you a heads-up about this last week. hackers are able to access tens of thousands of intimate pictures taken by the snapchat app. it is not snapchat's fault directly but neither here nor there. they are not pictures of hollywood stars but regular people. the hackers say there are tens of thousands of pictures of the people out there and they are extremely personal pictures. i don't think we have heard the last of this one. >> but you brought up a good point earlier, don't try to look up to see if your pictures are out there. >> you're curious and think there might be one, keep in mind there are tens upon tens of thousands of pictures out there and there's going to be one of somebody under 18. downloading that for the most innocent of reasons, looking to
6:18 am
make sure you're not in there is a felony. >> thank you, scott. 6:17. the city council is looking at introducing an ordinance to raise the minimum wage to $10.30 per hour starting in january. just last week the city of mountain view approved the minimum wage increase to $10.30. california's minimum wage is $9 per hour but that is exactly set to increase to $10 happening in 2016. san francisco and berkeley already have minimum wages above $10. >> a lot of cities looking to make those changes. turning now to the microclimate forecast as we give you a live look at the san bernardino mountain. >> looks good out there with a little fall upon us. >> finally. we really need the rain.
6:19 am
and you know what the good news is, it is not like i'm just tracking one single storm. we have a series of storms on the way to the bay area and really, everything that i look at shows that jet stream dipping right where we need it to as we get into the second half of october. we don't have any rain to show you just yet. that arrives a little later on today, but i have to tell you, if you are waking up with us in san francisco or areas to the north of the golden gate bridge, you want to definitely pull out that umbrella for today. temperatures are chilly. you also need your jacket. whereas yesterday we were in the tank tops, short sleeves, and i saw quite a few pairs of short shorts out there in san francisco yesterday. so everything changes today with cold fog, clouds back in the forecast. and we also have the inclusion of some much-needed rainfall.
6:20 am
you can see where the front is starting to push into northern california. that's a new development. that just started over the past ten minutes. now we are going to have to wait for the rain to develop offshore and move into the bay area. so right now you can see we're expecting that in santa rosa sometime after lunchtime. but before we hit 1:00, yeah, that's when you'll be working out your umbrella. probably having to keep it out for the following 36 hours. let's dive into what is coming your way. 73 degrees for the south bay today down from the upper 80s yesterday. we are at 69 degrees in san francisco. and 67 degrees for today in the north bay. now, as we get into tonight, that's when the real changes start to come in. we do want to keep that in mind. although you'll notice the weather elements really changing around you all day long. first, you'll see the clouds thicken up. they will turn gray, overcast, then heading throughout the afternoon, the breezy windy conditions develop likely impacting that ball at today's giants game. i'll show you the analysis for that coming up.
6:21 am
then this evening the spotty showers really settle in. count on a much cooler, cloudier day. the seven-day forecast shows another round of rain on the way heading throughout saturday and another one on sunday into monday. mike, things are looking pretty good. everything is turning around in this department. how about yours? everything is turning around, but that's a one-way street. on the freeway, we're looking at 101 that is looking better. the flow is improving. and we'll look at the area on the map, 101 is gumming up on the sensors but starting to recover. 87 is starting to slow down. it is tuesday, we expect they are taking over in the next half hour. a typical bill to the valley, the nemitz freeway is slow. the big issue is it may be lighter on the east shore freeway because all the folks held up on westbound 80 approaching highway 37 where the big rig blocking the freeway, highway 680 is an alternate.
6:22 am
more traffic is flowing on 680 and 780 westbound making that loop around the area. you can also come across the venetian bridge. 6:30 for the tow truck to get there for that portion of the north bay. 101 southbound through the north bay is picking up the volumes. no surprises here or across the golden gate bridge. look at the beautiful drive in and out of san francisco near 101. back to you. >> what a nice one. thank you, mike. up next, kicked while down. the man's car was stolen while visiting his wife in the hospital. what police are doing this morning to try to track down the thieves.
6:23 am
6:24 am
(yawn) (ding!) toaster strudel! more fruit in the filling, ya? mmm! ya! warm, flaky, gooey, toaster strudel! now, with more fruit! ring ring! progresso! i can't believe i'm eating bacon and rich creamy cheese before my sister's wedding well it's only 100 calories, so you'll be ready for that dress uh-huh...
6:25 am
you don't love the dress? i love my sister... 40 flavors. 100 calories or less. you have no doubt heard the saying, if not for bad luck i would have no luck at all. a thief stole both of the family cars a day after the family found out the wife and mom has a life-changing illness. >> daniel stewart would have reason to lose faith in mankind after what happened to him this weekend while he was visiting his wife at a san jose hospital. he lost his keys, he feared the worst that someone would use the keys to swipe his car and that's what happened. it happened on sunday at a good samaritan hospital where his wife was diagnosed with a rare form of multiple sclerosis a day earlier. stewart lost the keys to his car that he uses not to just get his wife around but also their four children and also to make money as a lift driver.
6:26 am
>> i figured if someone has recovered the keys, then more than likely they would try to steal the car. and that's pretty much what happened. >> well, san jose police confirm whoever found the keys also found the car and inside was stewart's wallet. he found the address to the home and the other family car, which was then stolen from the driveway while stewart's mother and children were inside. the other vehicle, the chevy cruz disappeared from the family ice driveway but police say someone spotted the initial car and that car has been returned to him. he filed police reports and has created go fund me account to raise funds that way, but certainly some very bad luck at a very tough time for that family. >> a one-two punch. we hope for his wife's recovery as well. right now the time is 6:26 on your tuesday. north korea's leader spotted in public for the first time in weeks. why that sighting is raising
6:27 am
more questions than answers. and coming together to take down isis, the key meeting taking place this morning at our nation's capital.
6:28 am
6:29 am
the fight against isis front and center. this morning the key meeting taking place in washington. and dust off that umbrella. we have rain on the way as of today. it will continue into your wednesday. we'll get a nice, dry break and it will stay chilly and cloudy on thursday. and then more rain moves in friday into saturday and sunday into monday. we have a lot to go over. a big change in your pattern in moments. and over my shoulder a shot in the south bay, but i'm also tracking the north bay closure right now continuing.
6:30 am
better news there, the rig is on its wheels. bad news, that will continue for at least a half hour. we are well into earnings season on the new york stock exchange this morning. they are getting ready for what could be another rough day as we hear the bell there and the terral company heavily invested in the dnasdaq. that's coming up. and christina has a look at the forecast. it is tuesday, october 14th. this is "today in the bay." good tuesday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. today the president meets with 21 nations to discuss the latest on isis. tracie potts is live on capitol hill this morning. the big question is whether anyone is willing to send ground
6:31 am
troops. zbl >> reporter: exactly, laura. it is not clear if any of these 22 countries will be able to do that, but they may not do it without someone following i sirks on tisis on the ground. today the defense ministers from all over the world will be here at andrew's air force base meeting with president obama and the chairman joint chiefs of sta staff. kobani is under siege but isis is getting closer to iraq. they are also moving closer and closer to baghdad and the iraqis still need training time to fight them off. >> they are getting stronger and more aggressive. thank you, tracie. new this morning, questions right now circulating about the health of north korea's leader after new photos show his first

public appearance in over a month. the images show kim jong un using a cane to tour a new housing project. he is also 20 pounds lighter. un was last seen walking with a limp at a concert last month. 6:32 right now and time to check the microclimate forecast as we give you a live look outside illuminated. >> we have seen some changes. now we have rain in the forecast. let's two to christina loren. just as fast as the numbers went up, they are going right back down today. we like to keep you two steps ahead of the changes, and that is easy to do now that the storm system is arriving right on time. we'll take you through the day to show you what to expect. this morning it's chilly enough for a coat and you'll need one all day long at the immediate coast where we are only climbing into the mid to upper 60s for today. what a difference a day makes
6:33 am
with widespread 80s in the coastal cities yesterday. 59 degrees in santa rosa. you're waking up warmer out there as well as the clouds are coming in. so you can see the difference from 24 hours ago, it's is 11 degrees warmer. we are still on the warm side of this system and is just now moving into the north bay. it will impact reasons to the north before it makes its way to the south bay. we are not expecting any real rain down here potentially until this evening. but count on the clouds increasing and that wind to pick up just in time for today's giants game. so if you're going to be watching that game, this is what you want to watch for when it comes to the weather. you see where the flags are headed out here, they will be blowing out towards left field. now typically at the yard you get that wind blowing out to mccovey cove. against the wind direction, we are talking about really strong sustained wind to the tune of 16 to 22 miles per hour.
6:34 am
gusting up to 40 miles per hour. we could get pick-up. if we do, it will be out here toward right field. watch for that as we get into today's game. the giants game, 1:05 is the first pitch. 69 degrees today for the east shore. a great day to stay inside to watch baseball if you have the day off. if you can't watch the game, remember, we'll tweet out what is going on at our website, nbcbayarea.com. that way you won't have to cheat the boss to get out to watch the game. we have a vested interest the see the broadcasted game of the san francisco giants. the dark clouds will follow with the rain moving in throughout this evening. this is a first of the series of storms. i'm going to show you what is coming our way toward the end of the week in my next report.
6:35 am
here's mike inouye. i'm going to track the giants game from piano lessons. not mine. the overturned big rig is back on its wheels from what i understand, but the bad news is it will take a half hour or 45 minutes to clear that. it could be just after 7:00. westbound 80 is cleared and southbound 29 is an alternate for you to take it to highway 47 and rejoin the freeway. or take 680 to backtrack to take the westbound area over to the cartinas bridge. it is slower now that you have a lot of companies taking the route, but at least you're out of the jam in fairfield headed toward vallejo. woe could see traffic from the upper and low er levels here, relatively speaking, this is not bad to get you across the bay
6:36 am
bridge. over here, 92 to 101 is seeing no slowdowns. back out to the maps, south 880 through hayward and into the south bay, yes, that's our lovely 101 slow down there. >> not so bad. >> tonight downtown san jose we have enrique inglesias. >> he has a t-shirt. >> they make great t-shirt markers. they are awesome. >> high quality. right now the markets have been struggling for the last several weeks. we'll check on what's going on on that front with scott mcgrew. >> we are positive this morning as we take a live look at the big board. the dow industrials adding 95 points with the nasdaq up 30. we'll talk about wells fargo with the company reported
6:37 am
profits pretty solid. we hear from intel today with a couple more tomorrow. we are well within earnings season. thank you. on a tuesday morning, will he or will he not play? the giants are keeping a very close eye on this cardinal this morning. and look at at&t park. we are joined next with the orange and black update.
6:38 am
6:39 am
californians are discovering the real risks behind prop 46. it was written and paid for by the trial lawyers to make them millions... while, for the rest of us, health care costs go up. no wonder every major newspaper in the state opposes prop 46. they say 46 "overreached in a decidedly cynical way." it's a ploy "for trial lawyers to enrich themselves." and prop 46 has "too many potential drawbacks to be worth the risk." time to vote no on prop 46.
6:40 am
time to talk a little giants baseball as we take a live look at at&t park. it will be quiet now but rocking later. we are live on the field this morning. we'll check in with her right now in ten minutes. in a matter of hours, thousands pack the park to watch the giants battle it out in the nlcs. the first pitch is after 1:00 today. >> comcast sportsnet has been traveling with us, amy gutierrez has the giants update. >> reporter: a dispointing game after losing game two, but they head back to the bay with a split having taken a game from the cardinals on their home turf. that is the situation that they
6:41 am
like. >> we were close to doing it, but, you know, this isn't going to be easy. we're playing a good club. >> reporter: the biggest surprise from the cardinals has been power. four home runs in game two. they hit the fewest home runs of a national game team with 105 but have knocked out 11 homers in six post subpoena gaseason games. >> we need to e are group and do a better job of that in the coming games. >> yeah, i think it is just one of those things where they bit a bunch of homers in the dodgers series. they are getting some mistakes and even hitting tough pitches that they are able to do damage with it. >> reporter: that's your update for "today in the bay." >> amy gutierrez there. we are back at at&t park today.
6:42 am
star catcher yadier molina could be playing today. while his injury looked bad, he is on the active roster and is currently listed as day to day. 6:41, the nurse with ebola gets some much needed help. and what passengers heard moments before the chaos inside their plane. and a woman is killed crossing the sidewalk. police want your help finding who is responsible. and san jose, it is beautiful out there. the backdrop of the mountains with drives on their way to work. we are back with 15 minutes of nonstop news right after this break. insurance companies are spending millions of dollars trying to mislead you about the effects of proposition 46. well here's the truth: 46 will save lives. it will save money too.
6:43 am
i'm bob pack, and i'm fighting for prop 46 because i lost my two children to preventable medical errors and i don't want anyone else to lose theirs. the three provisions in 46 will reduce medical errors and protect patients. save money and save lives. yes on 46.

an update now to breaking news. police are now searching for a passenger who ran away from the scene. the driver of the jeep ran a red light and hit the cab. the driver tried to make a run for it, tripped and was caught by police. officers are still looking for a passenger from the jeep. three people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. this happened near octavia and page street. police in san jose are trying to track down the driver who hit and killed a driver who was killed in the middle of a crosswalk. investigators spent the night combing for a vehicle. this woman did not appear to be doing anything reckless. >> according to witnesses she had the right of way.
6:46 am
this is near mckee where they forced the city to up stall a crosswalk signal. a woman was on the other side here as she was walking across with the right of way. and the car started to stop except for one. when she was more than halfway across mcitkee, she was going above the posted speed limit and she was run over. she kept going and stopped at the next signal and continued on the interstate and has not been seen since. the woman did survive the initial impact, had a faint heartbeat according to paramedics but unfortunately she died later at the hospital. >> the car never stopped. the cars do not respect the

people going through this area. this is a big problem in the area. >> reporter: police believe the suv has a lot of damage to its front end and they believe she was driving a chevy tahoe or suburban, possibly light brown or silver. and just to give you a sense of how dangerous this intersection is, you can see this car turning off of the road. it's got a blinking red flashing here. you can see the pickup driver just slammed into the back of that car, so it is definitely an intersection that the restaurant owner told us before is dangerous. as we just witnessed here, people do like to speed through here and that person clearly wasn't paying attention. again, it's a fender-bender that doesn't appear to nip. this is an example of the intersection where people speed through and unfortunately it was fatal last night. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'll see if this prompts any changes from the city to make it safer at that intersection.
6:48 am
at 6:47, now to the latest developments in the ebola crisis. the hospital in germany says a man being treated for ebola has died. the 56-year-old man was an international medical worker for the u.n. he became infected while working in liberia and was flown to germany for treatment. in the meantime, doctors say the texas nurse being treated for the disease has received a plasma transfusion from dr. kent brantley, an ebola survivor. the nurse nina phan contracted ebola while taking care of duncan last week in texas. and there are startling new numbers of ebola. there could be 10,000 new cases over the next two months. over the past month, there have been 1,000 new cases of ebola per week. 6:48 on your tuesday morning. let's get a live look outside.
6:49 am
