form of flattery? >> i think if you look at it side by side, they do look pretty identical. >> it's a controversy that's broiling that we'll get to a little later on. let's get to our top story this morning. we're talking about more violent storms set to impact tons of people on the eastern side of this country after they were slammed by storms on monday. we have al roker and dillon covering this. dillon, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. the rain is still coming down hard here in atlanta, but it was at 5:30 this morning when a severe thunderstorm warning went up for the city. we saw extremely gusty winds, rain was coming in sideways, we even almost lost our whole setup here with that wind. this is the whole squall of storms moving through yesterday, responsible for two tornadoes, one that took down two homes and even took two lives. severe weather spread 800 miles

across the south, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and possible tornadoes. and causing downed power lines, leaving thousands without power. this time lapse video showing the storms tearing through arkansas. from nashville, tennessee where weather channel's dave malkoff had a close call. >> that was right on top of me. >> to dora, alabama where a 75-year-old woman died when a tree fell on her home. >> we lost a good lady in our community. >> reporter: and in ash down, arkansas -- >> i was in a dead sleep, you know. all of a sudden my husband shakes me and he says, baby, hilt the floor. >> reporter: destruction from a possible tornado with homes damaged and tractors overturned. >> we had things thrown everywhere. it gives us a good indication that this was a tornado that came through this area. >> reporter: a marine and father of three died when his home was hit. >> and their mother is in intensive care right now, but she's stable. and the father didn't make it. >> reporter: in texas and

louisiana, tens of thousands of people without power after possible tornadoes there. now, this line of storms is quickly racing to the east, and with it so, too, is that threat of severe weather. while we're not looking at the extreme outbreak we saw yesterday and last night, we still have to focus, al, on some strong storms possible through the carolinas this afternoon. >> absolutely right, dillon. thank you very much. 16 states, 45 million people under the gun for this storm. in fact, the risk of severe weather stretching from roanoke all wait down to daytona, as far west as tallahassee and atlanta in this as well. as we look at the live radar, you can see just how heavy the storms are. this area shaded in red, that's where we have tornado watches into early afternoon hours, so we're going to continue to track it. we have flash flood warnings also starting to fire up throughout a good portion of the central plains on into the south. rainfall amounts anywhere from 1 to 2 inches, but we could be locally looking at 2 to 4 from southwestern virginia to

georgia, 3 to 5 inches in the panhandle. also, gonzolo, we've been watching this hurricane. it is wrapping up. tropical storm warnings canceled for puerto rico. however, this storm is expected to become the strongest for the hurricane season. 100 miles east of san juan, moving northwest at 113. here's the big problem. if you know anybody in or around bermuda, or you're planning a trip to bermuda, this is bad news. sometime late friday this will be a category 2 storm making its way across bermuda, which was already devastated by fay last week. so this could be very bad news. and a little bit later on, we're going to tell you about another tropical storm that may be affecting hawaii. so it's a very busy time. >> thank you very much. now to the ebola crisis. the cdc is now monitoring all hospital workers who treated dallas victim thomas duncan after a 26-year-old nurse contracted the virus. and this morning we know more about her and about the care she

is receiving. nbc national correspondent kate snow is in dallas for us this morning. kate, good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning to you. last night we learned that dr. kent brantly, the first american treated for ebola who survived, he has donated his blood once again to this 26-year-old nurse, that blood hopefully rich in antibodies. she is in stable condition and we're learning more about her. ♪ >> reporter: at our lady of fatima church in ft. worth, prayers in vietnamese for nine a pham, who always wanted to be a nurse, receiving her degree in critical care in the last few months. her mother urged her to quit working with ebola patient thomas eric duncan, but she stayed. >> she says she's been treated very well and she feels very comfortable. >> reporter: for the third time,

eric brantly donated blood. one man she was in contact with when she was potentially infectious is also in the hospital in isolation from the company he works for. then there's her dog, her king charles spaniel named bentley who she has been worried about. excalibur, a dog who was around ebola was put down. she tweet aid photo to show how nice his new digs are. >> that dog will be the best cared-for dog in the united states. this young lady is a hero and she is concerned about her health and that dog. and we are going to take care of that dog. >> "that dog" is part of the reason the cleaning crew saturated the sidewalk outside with disinfectant. >> did someone tell you she had been on that concrete? >> no.

we just knew she had a dog and there were other residents walking their dogs out in the front and the back. >> reporter: ebola can only live on surfaces for a short time and scientists aren't sure if dogs can transmit the disease. at the hospital monday, a town hall meeting where the staff prayed. the big question remains, why did pham become infected on the job while wearing protective gear? >> we have not identified a specific problem that led to this infection. we have identified a series of things where we can make the care safer and easier for health care workers who are providing it. >> reporter: overnight a u.n. worker who had been working in liberia and was being treated in germany died. some better news, though, coming out of nebraska. our freelance cameraman for nbc news is improving there, so much so that he's now tweeting from his hospital bed writing, back on twitter, feeling like i'm on the road to good health.

>> he's got a fan running, basically, that's pulling air from the environment through a hepa filter that's giving him a positive airway all the time with a flow of air. so he's never breathing any air from the outside room. >> the goal? >> to protect ourselves from what's in this environment, whether it's the patient's bodily fluids, and we're making sure we don't carry any of that contamination out of that room. >> reporter: they're inside the isolation room for up to four hours at a time. >> when we are in that room, you are all in. eating, drinking, taking a bathroom break, all weight until you can take off that suit. >> reporter: outside the isolation room, there is always a second person suited up as backup for an outside observer, watching for any signs of contamination or for a misstep. >> if i see anything dangerous for them, we'll interrupt that behavior right away. >> leaving isolation and taking off the suits takes just as long, the danger far from over,

the risk at its greatest. >> inadvertently, it seems that while trying to maintain your equipment, people actually end up contaminating themselves when they're taking pieces of equipment off. >> reporter: even after the equipment is off, a three to five-minute shower and body scrub. >> everything is important to keep whatever is in this room in this room and keep it from getting out into any part of the environment. >> now, in addition to all those steps, anyone who came in contact with the ebola patients was then monitored for 21 days. but as you can see, it only takes one little mistake and you can be contaminated or exposed to the virus. >> it's really scary to think and the levels of precaution they put in place, but it's still not preventing this. >> meantime, one more update on our team that covered the ebola outbreak in africa. dr. nancy snooyderman released

ripping in and tearing in. we started screaming and shouting. >> just minutes after takeoff, portions of the cabin began to buckle in, forcing the plane to turn around. initially the crew made the decision to keep flying after inspecting the damage. >> they peeled back the panels and checked for daltylight, and there was no oxygen masks dropping. they said, we're okay for now, we're going to keep going. >> reporter: when the pilot took a look -- >> he immediately said, we're turning around and making an emergency landing. >> reporter: they said the crack was most likely caused by a broken air duct but the safety of the plane was never compromised. the cabin never lost pressure and no one was injured. that plane has now been taken out of service. as for the passengers, they are flying out this morning after spending the night in san francisco. natalie, matt? >> very scary. betty, thank you very much. a key meeting for the president today. >> good morning, everyone. defeating isis, and that is the

topic today, of a high-level meeting of president president obama with officials around the world. more than 400 defense chiefs will meet at the air force base to hammer out an agreement with syria and iraq. they have contributed air and ground forces in that ongoing fight. breaking news near indianapolis where a double decker tour bus has flipped onto its side, seriously injuring about half a dozen people. that bus was carrying between 50 and 60 people. it crashed when its driver apparently swerved to avoid another crash on the highway. at least six people suffered serious injuries, more than 20 passengers are being treated for minor and moderate injuries. north korea's official newspaper today showed several photos of kim jong-un in what is believed to be his first public appearance in more than 40 days. chief correspondent andrea mitchell is in washington. andrea, good morning. >> good morning, tamyrn.

while the u.s. cannot verify when those photos were taken, they do appear to show the dictator in his first public outing using a cane. they said he was at the opening of a new residential complex. his use of a cane shows he is still suffering from a problem with his leg. analysts say it could be the gout. but there is no political reason for the leader, he seems to be running as usual. so why was he out of sight for a month, missing a major holiday on friday honoring his father? he was using a wheelchair before he could walk on his own with that cane. it appears this young and brutal leader is reemerging with no explanation for his absence and armed with nuclear weapons. tamyrn? gay rights groups are hailing what they call a seismic

suspicion of driving under the influence while taking dozens of students, parents and teachers on a field trip. here is nbc's miguel almagon. >> reporter: terrifying moments monday. a police dashcam capturing a utah school bus driver swerving erratically on a busy stretch of highway while transporting more than 70 students, teachers and parents on a class trip. >> i don't get scared very easy, but my heart is pounding. >> she can't stay in the lanes, she's crossing the double lines and the adults are getting scared. >> reporter: one chaperone called 911 as the bus sped down the interstate at nearly 80 miles an hour to a field trip in bringi brigham young university in provo. >> it is freaking scary and we've got 76 people on this bus. and she is nuts! >> reporter: troopers pulled

a very good morning to you. it is 7:56. we have breaking news in the south bay. these are live pictures where rescue crews are trying to rescue a woman who is in a car that fell 500 feet down an embankment. you see the car overturned there. it is off mount hamilton road in the east foothills of san jose. we are told the woman is alive but suffered life-threatening injuries. she's been in the car since yesterday afternoon. crews couldn't track the car's on-star transponder until 6:00 this morning. we have a ground crew on the scene. we'll update this story throughout the morning, but crews are now trying to hoist her up from the side of a ravine there in mount hamilton. also, just moments ago facebook ceo mark zuckerberg and his wife announced they are donating $25 million to the cdc to help fight the ebola outbreak.

>> next is the white chili. what are you leaving out? >> the red tomatoes and all the tomato paste. we're doing veal basically in a little bit of hot oil, some fennel seeds, which are right here. in a blender you basically put all these vegetables and you're using green tomatoes or mexican tomato tomatoes. first we're going to put in a little milk to soften this meat. you want to make sure that it's broken down. this will tenderize your meat. once all that white is gone from the pan, about five minutes, you're going to add this. >> this is what it comes out looking like? >> there's chives in it. >> vegetarian. >> white beans in the second one, beans and meat and this one is just beans. traditional indian dish called

after she spent a good 15 hours in that car alone after wrecking some time yesterday afternoon. not being found until early this morning. she was lifted away in that chopper to regional medical center. chp and the fire department tell us she has moderate to severe injuries, but she was awake, confused, but awake, and now in stable condition. they were able to find her, they believe her on star device in her car activated around 2:00 yesterday afternoon, when she wrecked off this road. they don't know why she lost control and veered off into that ravine, and what they started doing afterwards, the authorities started pinging her cell phone and that's how they were finally able to locate her around 5:00 this morning. took almost four hours to extricate her from that ravine. again, she's at regional medical center in stable condition. >> reporting live here in san jose. bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> amazing that woman survived. thank you very much, bob.
