it's 4:30. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to today. it's thursday morning. hi, christina. >> the weekend is upon us. just about. just about. good morning to you. we have really interesting weather changes to go over as we get into your thursday. i have to tell you, temperatures are going to be cool for today. showers return as we get into tomorrow. so today's kind of a transition day and then we have below-average temperatures for you as we get into that weekend. so stick around. we're going to take you through the changes in your microclimate. and yeah, we have pretty good

looking rainfall totals to go over. so stick around. if you can't, mike has the traffic to get you out the door in time. >> through the stretch of traffic, farther south, let's look at the maps, overall we want to give everybody the idea that it's smooth as you would expect overnight road crew going on but heading to the south bay, southbound 280 at foothill expressway, we had a crash. from what i understand, we have some affect on the lanes. we haven't had a significant update in the last few minutes. it sounds like the majority of the lanes are open. we'll send it back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. stricter ebola restrictions will take effect today. the increased security comes after the second health care

worker flew on a commercial flight. vincent is now being treated at emory university hospital in atlanta. she was flown there late last night in a haz-mat suit. the front teier plane that she w on is on grounded. health officials are also trying to contact the more than 130 passengers who were also on that flight with vincent. meantime, the first health care worker to contract ebola, nina pham, is in good condition at the hospital. and there will be hearings today whether the cdc is responding

the correct way. >> now, despite assurances, at the american medical supply store in san jose, masks are in big demand. $65 for a box of 35. gloves going quickly, too. some people say they wear two pairs at once just for added safety. people have been asking about protective gowns as well. the store owner has not seen anything like this since the sars outbreak in 2003. >> we literally had done something called ration, which is unheard of. if people wanted to buy a, b bo we had to refuse it because the quantities were very limited. i hope we don't have to do the same thing this time. >> medical experts say while protective gears can be helpful, the chances of coming into contact with somebody who has ebola, very, very slim.

we have extensive coverage at our website as well, nbcbayarea.com. there you can find out information about how the virus actually spreads and the latest information about the updates here in the u.s. sam? >> thank you, laura. investigators are looking for someone who shot a 12-year-old boy near the intersection of weldon street and willow pass street. they found a 12-year-old with a gunshot wound. a helicopter flew the boy to the hospital in oakland. no word on his condition. bay area detectives are being looking for a man who groped two young girls outside of a crowded store. the police are looking for this suspect right here seen in this surveillance video. the first victim was at a san leandro walmart store when the man grabbed her from behind. 50 minutes later, the same thing happened at a target store down the street. police believe the same man is responsible for the attacks.

a possible plea for a 17-year-old richard thomas, an oakland teen who is about to enter a plea bargain. he was charged with a hate crime after starting a skirt on fire. people will drop, cover, and hold on as part of california's big shakeout. students will take part in a drill later this morning and it comes the day before the 25th anniversary of the loma prieta quake. i remember it well. >> reporter: this mostly is involving students and they will participate in the world's largest earthquake drill at 10:16 this morning, an expected 9 million californians will drop, cover and hold on as part

of the great shakeout. it's a drill that began in '08. when you add in everyone taking part worldwide, you're looking at 25 million participants. that's what is expected. with tomorrow being the 25th anniversary of loma prieta, that cost billions of dollars in damage and, more importantly, killed 63 people here in the bay area. deaths that might have been avoided if those people had some sort of advanced warning, which is why you had this meeting yesterday at san francisco city hall. there were representatives from b.a.r.t., sm general and utilities and government leaders trying to get a status update on the statewide earthquake early warning system, one that could give 10 to 50 seconds heads up on a quake. it's not been put in place because of lack of funding. and what's odd, early warning systems are in widespread use in other countries but not here in california, even though that very technology was developed

here. >> if other countries like japan and mexico, it's the same technology that's in effect. >> so we're catching up to other countries? >> believe it or not, it's a matter of california sort of catching up to other countries but i believe we will surpass them pretty soon. >> reporter: for the past couple of years, b.a.r.t. has been beta testing the early-warning system. it has found that just a ten-second warning is enough to bring a 30-mile-an-hour train to a stop and prevent derailment. bob redell, nbc bay area. a protest is stemming from video posted on youtube showing a group of neighboring kids arguing with a group of drop box employees over a playground. the employees have a permit to use that area but the kids play

pick-up soccer every night. today, protesters will ask the city to make the park 100% public. since this video surfaced, drop box apologized for the way that its employees acted. apple is officially unveiling its new ipads today. >> someone released screen shots of the new ipad mini and air. the new ipads have touch i.d. technology which is similar to the new iphones. >> very cool. >> just in time for christmas. a live look right now at at&t park, the giants are looking to close things out against the cardinals tonight in front of the home crowd. first pitch is at 5:07. >> and kansas city continued a post-season run yesterday

sweeping the baltimore orioles. the last time they made the classic, 29 years ago. very exciting. >> they have not been to the playoffs in three decades and they got to the world series. they are there, thanks mostly to great release pitching. three running scored at the bottom of the sixth inning. giants won last night, 6-4. >> and the pitcher madison bumgarner won the game in st. louis, you might recall. >> tickets are going pretty fast. the cheapest ticket we could find, 185 bucks and that's for standing room only. some fans who cannot pay that price but still want to be there are watching through the fence. one fan painted a five-gallon bucket in the appropriate colors just to see the game. >> it was a great game last night. stayed up late to watch it. did you, christina?

>> i fell asleep. i had to do some homework. i was trying my hardest to stay up and i'm really, really looking forward to tonight's game. 61 degrees in san francisco. what i'm not looking forward to, potentially taking on the royals. oh, my goodness. those guys look really, really good. so, yeah, it's getting down to the wire. i know a lot of us are exerting a lot of our energy on those games. we have a little bit of rain in the forecast to get through. temperatures in the 70s. 69 degrees on the east shore. kind of an overcast day for you. we have one system pulling out and another one moving in. you'll notice changing conditions for today. rain on the way as we head throughout tomorrow and into the weekend. but i don't think it's going to put a damper on the half moon bay pumpkin festival saturday and sunday. a lot of people coming to town for this one and i think this year it's going to be a-okay for no showers. we have rain on the way both

friday night and sunday night. i'll show that to you on the futurecast. right now i'll go to mike inouye. i know you watched it because i saw it on your facebook page. we got the updates constantly via my son. over towards the south bay, a smooth drive for the 101. there are a couple issues coming down 680 at the washington offramp. reports that a deer was hit and killed and it sounds like it's partial partially blocking the fast lane. not a big issue for livermore or dublin, of course. approaching the bay bridge, all the way to the bay bridge toll plaza, traffic flows very nicely. very light volume and no real backup except for a couple of

good thursday morning to you. 4:45 right now. hbo cutting the cord with cable. the network is making a major change, offering paid online streaming service separate from cable television. the company hopes to target the 10 million internet households that only have internet. the service will launch next year. hbo has not announced how much it will cost into meantime, los gatos' netflix is the stock to watch. the company's quarterly earnings were not up to snuff causing stock prices to plummet.

good morning, jackie. >> that's right. netflix is one of the stocks to watch on netflix today. stocks falling 25% in after-hour trading on wednesday. the issue is netflix adding fewer new customers disappointing investors and it could be a sign that subscriber growth is slowing. we've heard hbo will be launching their own streaming service next year. the dow fell as much as 460 points early on following disappointing economic reports on retail sales and inflation. add to that, fresh headlines on ebola and the u.s. and you have the setting for a market disaster. but stocks did manage to cut their losses later in the day. today we're going to get reports on manufacturing and housing and

earnings from goldman sachs, delta airlines and google. the dow finished at 16,141. nasdaq down 11 to 42,015. and amazon is up 14% compared to last year. >> the warehouses must get so busy at christmastime. >> you'd have to manage. thank you very much. 4:47 on your thursday morning. even the announcers yesterday were complaining about cold temperatures at at&t park. christina, it's not that bad. >> not everybody is a tough guy like you, sam brock. there's your reality check. it was cold but we didn't have to deal with the wind blowing out towards left field like the night before. so weather definitely impacted

at&t park because of where it's positioned, right on the san francisco bay. it's typically a breezy area and, of course, you've got the open stadium so you're exposed to the elements. we're going to take an in-depth analysis look at the forecast. 54 degrees in oakland. cool temps for today. weather changes coming your way. we're kind of in that transitional period, sam, between two storm systems. starting out mostly clear and clouds increasing. the showers return as we head throughout tomorrow. i think we'll see a little bit of activity tomorrow morning, especially up in the north bay right at the immediate coast. holding off on that rain until friday night. most of it clears out by saturday morning you'll get a great weekend and then more rain on the way. the third storm is the most powerful of the three systems and that one moves in late sunday into monday. but look at these temperatures. this is what i love about this time of year. no ac necessary. 72 degrees on the peninsula. temperatures will stay steady in the 70s all the way across the

board in the south bay through monday. we're talking about rain chances. friday, getting a nice weekend and then that returns on monday. that could make for a difficult drive. i'll show you the timing coming up. right now, though, back to you, sam and laura. >> thanks, christina. 4:49. happening now, hong kong's leader is ready to meet with the leaders of the pro-democracy protest. he called off talks last week. police and protesters continue to clash in the streets of hong kong. demonstrations began three weeks ago when the chinese government said the democratic election. olympic sprinter oscar pistorius is back in court this morning for the continuation of his sentencing hearing. he was found guilty of culpable homicide for killing his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. steenkamp's family said that the apology to her family was not

sincere. pistorius could be sentenced 15 years in prison or go on house arrest. four pitbulls attacked a man and his 77-year-old mother in their own backyard last night. the man died and the mother is in critical condition. they had been asking the neighbors to properly secure the dogs who got into their yard through a common fence. all four pitbulls were eventually shot and killed by the police. the school says they do not have a field to play on and it's not created space for the field hockey team. lawyers for the players will meet with the university attorneys to try to reach an agreement and avoid that

lawsuit. a warning now for parents in oakland. a bad batch of mac and cheese may make them sick. it was improperly cooked in a kitchen. the spoiled mac and cheese was distributed to 24 kids. at this point, no one has reported any food-related illness. >> kids love their mac and cheese. let me tell you. >> good stuff. who is the new host at the oscars picked by the academy. >> by then it was too late because they had thrown out the tire spikes. we'll show you what police found when they finally stopped a speeding suv. there they go. the flashing lights getting ready for the morning commute. we missed all of the action at the golden gate bridge. we'll show you more action for the commute on the east shore freeway, coming up.

driving. she was that close. they tried to call 911 to tell an operator what was happening. it was too late. police tossed out the spike strips to stop the car. >> i was in the middle of the highway having contractions with guns pointed at me. >> i was caught between the police telling me to put my hands up and my wife girth birth in the street. >> they end up giving the police escort to the hospital. look at that baby and mom. no charges expected to be filed against the couple. what a story to tell. >> it's the long arm of the law and the long arm of your wife. stuck in the middle. >> long arm to catch that baby. let's get a check of what is going on with your roadway with mike inouye. >> we see those pursuits going on sometimes for 40 minutes but that one was pretty quick. everything is looking fine towards the city. look at the bridge.
