good morning. i'm dara brown. the prime minister of canada is calling it an act of terrorism. a masked gunman opened fire at the national war memorial in ottawa killing soldiers standing guard. the suspect has been identified as 32-year-old michael joseph hall. he's been using the name michael zehaf-bibeau since converting to islam. he was shot and killed while firing his weapon. this is the second attack against soldiers in canada this week. nbc's jay gray is live in ottawa this morning. good morning, jay. can you tell us what the latest is there? >> reporter: good morning, yeah. the lockdown is over here in the capital city, but it is still a city on edge. and a heavy police presence here right now in the downtown area has been throughout the night and will continue throughout the day, we're told. it has been here since the shooting yesterday.

>> there is a man with a rifle shooting at a bunch of people. >> reporter: as the first shots rang out -- >> pow. pow. >> reporter: bystanders rushed to the side of a fallen soldier but were unable to save corporal nathan sirillo standing guard at canada's national war memorial. >> there is no pain greater than losing a loved one. to have it happen in circumstances as this morning is underlined by sadness and anger within my heart. >> reporter: next, witnesses say the gunman hijacked a car and went to canada's parliament building. and opened fire in the central hall of honor. 30 people were injured as lawmakers scrambled before the suspect was shot and killed by the sergeant at arms. a bystander says this shows the gunman as michael joseph hall from quebec also known as michael zehaf-bibeau. a recent muslim convert.

they raised the terrorism level and three days ago a man officers say has ties to radical islam drove his car into two soldiers in montreal, killing one. >> this week's events are a grim reminder that canada is not immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world. >> as investigators continue to try and find out how and why it happened here. now we have learned a couple of things about the suspect overnight. first of all, a long criminal record over the last ten years. mostly drug and robbery arrests there. and recently authorities confiscated his passport, concerned he was preparing to travel overseas to fight with extremists there. that's the latest live here in ottawa, i'm jay gray. dara? >> thank you so much for that. white house security is tight after another fence jumper. it happened on a north lawn late

wednesday. the guy got 20 to 25 yards from the fence before he was tackled by officers and canine police dogs. suspect was unarmed. the suspect is 23-year-old dominic atasana who suffered dog bites to his arm, back, chest and knee. the president was inside at the time. this is the second security scare. last month, omar gonzalez made it into the east room, the iraq war vet was armed with a knife. a new scandal for the secret service, a tight lipped mission dubbed operation moonlight. homeland security uncovered it. agents allegedly bailed on their posts protecting president ob a obama. why? to check on a female colleague who was reportedly being harassed by a neighbor.

homeland security is calling for a full investigation. this morning, as ebola hops across the globe, images of hope here at home. ashoka mukpo smiling and virus free, hugging the medical staff who saved his life. in an nbc news exclusive, he tried to answer questions so many of us have. >> do you know how you contracted ebola? >> that's the million dollar question. i was working with various news organizations and i was at ebola treatment units, following burial teams. >> if you were starting to feel funny, why were you working? why would you put other people at risk? >> the moment i started to feel funny. . i went home. there was a five to ten minute period between the first moment i thought, what's that and i had a thermometer in my mouth. >> good news for nina pham. she's in good condition. as for amber vinson, her family says she's ebola free.

in dallas, pham's dog bentley got good news too. tests show he is completely virus free. and new cd rules travelers from ebola zones will now be monitored for 21 days, comes as an ap poll reveals nine out of ten americans back tighter screening rules. re newed outrage in the investigation of the michael brown shooting. the los angeles times says the doj is condemning a series of leaks calling them irresponsible and highly troubling. there seems to be an inappropriate effort to influence public opinion about this case. benjamin crump, the lawyer for michael brown's family, gave an interview to msnbc's joy ann reed. he said the leaks aren't occurring by happenstance. >> what is the use to have a grand jury if everything is going to be leaked out anyway. so the family is obviously frustrated. they believe that these leaks are intentional. and they're very, very heart broken. >> the most recent leak was this

washington post report according to their sources, several african-american witnesses are corroborating officer darren wilson's account. a new york times preview this weekend about officer wilson's testimony. and this bombshell, the st. louis post dispatch released the official autopsy and toxicology report. the paper says it got it from the county medical examiner's office. an official denies giving the paper a report -- a copy of the report. meanwhile, a forensic pathologist says she was misquoted in the paper's oral. she claire fide her analysis. >> we only have partial information here. we don't have the scene information. we don't have the police investigation. we don't have all the witness statements. and you can't interpret autopsy findings in a vacuum. you need to take them in the context of the scene investigation. >> a black eye for ncaa powerhouse unc. for 18 years, at least 3100

student athletes took bogus courses and got high grades for them. according it a report released by unc, it was a scam that aloud them to remain eligible. they took the so-called paper classes in a department formerly known as american studies. allegations were brought to light five years ago. this is fist time the school apologized for what happened. four employees have been fired. five others are facing disciplinary action. now it is time for weather. here is nbc meteorologist bill karins with your national forecast. good morning, bill. >> good morning. we're talking more rain in the northwest. now sneaking it down into northern california. this is great. exceptional drought going on there. this is what we needed. the start of the rainy season. so far this month we had about an inch of rain, medford northward. not much in california. that's why when you look at the radar and see where all the pacific energy is focused into northern california, this is great. it is not going to pour today. this is starting a trend.

we have another storm coming in saturday and maybe even another one coming in the middle of next week. this is good. here is a look at the radar. plentiful this morning from ft. bragg northward, light rain around reading, crescent city, gusty winds, that front kicks through last night. won't make it much further to the south, though. will end, dry up into showers this afternoon. further to the north, showery weather. you can see heavier rain near olympia and north of portland. that should kick down over portland. the forecast for today, again, if we're going to get that cold front down to san francisco, not expecting a lot out of it, we could squeeze out a shower or two. instability in a thunderstorm in the northwest. friday, a little break. saturday, another storm for the same region. that's ythat rain barely makes

leading the news in "usa today", u.s. misinformed congress, public on immigrant release. the paper reports that new records contradict the obama administration's assurances to congress and the public that 2200 people freed from immigration jails last year to save money only had minor criminal records. in bloomberg, 2447 bottles of wine on the wall and the state plans to dump them all. thousands of rare bottles were seized from an illegal seller. pennsylvania may have to pour it all down the drain. but then there's this. a small part of the state's liquor code allows for one other option and that is to donate it to hospitals. >> i bet you there is a bunch of people that would like that.
