died identified as corporal nathan cirillo, a reservist, father, and animal lover. he was standing guard just minutes before the shooting. >> there was a guy with a rifle just around on the back corner, and just pow, pow. >> reporter: from the national war me your yal at the heart of the city, the suspect got in a car and drove a third of a mile to parliament hill and stormed into the seat of the canadian national government. steven harper was inside the bi building as the gunfight ensued. members of parliament barricaded in the room and piled furniture against the door. this morning, kevin vickers is a hero for drawing a weapon and taking down the shooter later pronounced dead at the scene. he's michael joseph hall, also

known as michael zehaf-bibeau, just turned 32, and convictions for assault, drugs, and weapons charged. he was reportedly deemed a high risk traveller by canadian officials. >> fellow canadians in the days to come, we'll learn more about the terrorist and any accomplice he may have had. >> reporter: on monday, a man used a car to run over two soldiers in montreal, killing one. now the sergeant of arms is a ceremony role, but this sergeant of arms happened to be a former police officer. talking to members of parliament here, many say they were in the building behind those doors. they also point out that had the shooter known the hallway that he was going down, he may have known that bind one of the doors, the prime minister was having a meeting with his caucus, and this story could have been very different this morning as a result. matt?

>> thank you very much. don perelli, a senior fbi official, chief operating officer providing strategic security services to governments and corporations. great to see you. this guy, 32 years old, criminal weapons, drug possession, spent time in jail. the detail getting attention was he was a recent convert to islam. does he fit the profile of an isis-type operative or seem to be more of a sympathizer with a troubled past? >> seems like at this point a sympathizer with a troubled past. i look back at the reports coming in overnight where some of the friends, people that were at the mosque where he practiced, basically, he was asked to leave if those reports were true because he was showing signs of mental illness. >> and caught the attention of canadian officials, restricted the passport, could not traveled out of the country, and might that triggered the rage and attack in fact country? >> it might have.

it certainly -- he knew he was on the radar at the least, but the canadians did not have enough information to actually lock him up, so they're put in a difficult situation knowing he's volatile and dangerous, but not enough to detain. >> two separate attacks in canada, both targeting members of the military. does that surprise you given the fact there's extra risk carried with it? >> well, the military, the government, iconic symbols, and, of course, now what's going overseas with isis, joining the coalition, so it's not necessarily surprising that those types of targeting are on the radar. >> you look at the picture of the members barricading themselves in parliament, could that be our own capitol building in washington, and add the recent fence jumper at the white house. do we have to up the alert here in the country? >> well, i don't know if we need to up the alert, necessarily,

but i i think we should be looking at our physical security status, making sure that the measures are working the way they are designed to work. i think we have enough in place as long as everybody's doing their job and then the procedures are followed. everybody has to be diligent. >> absolutely, don, thank you very much. appreciate it. let's did to hoda. the secret service investigating yet another security lapse at the white house. a man jumped over the fence last niergt. this time, the suspect tackled almost immediately. this as we learn more about another troubling incident that dates back to 2011. nbc's white house correspondent kris tin welker has the latest on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. secret service officials identified the latest fence jumper as a 23-year-old, unarmed, but fought back against k-9 units who attacked him. fresh anger after the department of homeland security inspector general found three years ago there was a serious lapse in judgment that could have

jeopardized the president's security. this stunning video captured by fox news shows the latest fence jumper kicking and punching the dogs who attacked him, a stark contrast to last month's fence jumping incident with no dogs released. it is yet another secret breach as they repair their image. outrage expressed over the government report that slams the agency for misconduct three years ago. >> safety and the security of the president is totally dependent on the secret service doing its job a hundred percent of the time. >> reporter: according to the dhs inspector general in july of 201 the then atlanta director, smith, approved a plan of operation moonlight to divert agents on the so-called prowler team away from the post to check on a secret service employee involved in a neighborhood dispute. prowler teams are two special agents, supposed to be on alert

and ready to respond at a moment's notice to potential threats here around the white house and on capitol hill. instead, for five days, including two when the president was at the white house, those teams were sent an hour away the employee's home in rural maryland complaining a neighbor was harassing per. >> somebody needs to be held accountable. >> they said it was a personal friendship with high ranking agency officials that motivated the decision, and the ig found no justification for the team spent to the employee's home. the next move is joseph clancey, the new interim director, who took over after the breach. >> it's at a make oar break moment in history right now. has the ability and can make a comeback, but it's in a very precarious spot. >> reporter: we reached out to everyone in the ig report, but no response. in a statement, the secret service said they are reviewing the report. as for the fence jumper, he was taken to the hospital with dog bites to the arm, back, chest,

and knee. he faces multiple felony charges this morning. the dogs who tackled him, hurricane and jordan, were taken to the vet, but cleared to return to duty this morning. hoda, matt? >> all right. thank you. let us turn now to the ebola crisis. good news for two patients here in the united states. the family of amber vinson, one of the dallas nurses, fighting that virus, steadily regaining strength, and tests show no ebola in her blood. and the nbc freelancer is headed home to rhode island after receiving the all clear to leave the nebraska hospital. before he left, he sat down for an interview. >> reporter: tired but thrilled to be alive, boarded a private plane in nebraska bound for home. >> i'm kate. in this case to meet you in person. >> reporter: we met up after he left isolation unit. >> about as fortunate as a human being can feel.

there was a moment i didn't know what was going to happen. >> reporter: saying the hardest part about having ebola was the fear. >> i've been seeing people with ebola for weeks and weeks and weeks, and i knew that statistics of survival. >> you had seen people die. >> yes, i had seen people die in liberia. i saw things that i'll carry with me forever. >> reporter: did you think about your family, your girlfriend? >> every day. you know, my girlfriend in particular, that's a person i love, just so deeply, and be honest with you, as much as i've prayed for my wife, the idea of leaving her was just horrific. we have such an intertwined lives with each other that i couldn't even contemplate that. >> reporter: he's not sure how he was infected with ebola, but mid way through the second day working with nbc, he said he started feeling off with back pain, and within minutes, left for the apartment to check for

fever, and his experience in liberia, he knew what to do. >> i checked the temperature, and i had two thermometers, showing up both with a significant fever, and i knew priority number one at that point was to isolate myself. >> stay away from everybody else? >> yep. >> reporter: flown to nebraska and days later, ebola survivor kent brantley donated blood. >> pulled over at the side of the road and opened up at a blood center. >> reporter: he did. >> i felt that was a moment when i got the blood transfusion, it was hard on my body, and i could feel, sort of -- something foreign coming in, and it was, you know, not the easiest day, but the next day i felt like my body started to kick start and respond to it. >> reporter: he's like to meet kevin and the nurses whose families say they are a step closer to going home. >> they are heros, you know? like, these people are saving looif

the firing of the officer darren wilson. they clashed outside the police department. the autopsy revealed that brown was shot nine times in all, once in the hand giving some credence to wilson's claim that brown tried to grab his gun. a three month old american girl and several others were killed when a man drove his car into a crowded train stop in jerusalem. he ran over nine people, the driver was shot then by the police as he tried to flee. israel blamed ha mass on the attack. roger goodell must testify ordered by the arbitrator of the case. punishing the ravens running back twice for the same offense. rice says during a meeting in june, he told goodell that he hit his then fiance, but goodell insists rice's story was ambiguous. peter al exlander was told they ruled the team's president and

many of you asked about him, his test was negative for ebola. that's a happy dog. this is video posted on the city of dallas yesterday showing bently wagging his tail, playing with a stuffed squirrel. all the things a pup should be doing. he's doing pretty good. this was monday when bently was tested for ebola. the results of the latest released by the dallas animal services adoption center. here's what they posted online. news from team bently this morning. he's tested negative for the ebola virus. and one of our viewers, so many of you tweeted us about bentley, so happy for bentley. now to get his mommy skbel have the two reunited. bentley is still under quarantine. he will be until november 1st. hopefully we will see an updated picture of them together. >> so cute. thank you.

a lot of people might disagree. we begin with the retrial of a florida multimillionaire u. john goodman, he's charged with dui manslaughter in the death of a 23-year-old man. during his first trial, goodman tried to shield his wealth by attempting to adopt his own girlfriend. keri sanders is in west palm beach with more. >> reporter: good morning, in the first trial john goodsman who founded the international polo club and his net worth was established and pegged at $300 million was found guilty of vehicular homicide. but they discovered jury disregularities and declared a mistrial. in the second trial, he's back on the stand telling a new jury there's a good explanation his blood alcohol was twice the legal limit. >> i took my foot off the brake and pumped the brake harder.

>> reporter: john goodman is telling his story again. >> i have no idea what happened. >> on wednesday at his retrial, he told a new jury about the night four years ago when he's accused of running a stop sign and slamming his bentley into scott wilson's hyundai. blood tests taken three hours later showed his blood alcohol hefl was twice the legal limit. wilson survived the accident but slowly drown as his car sank in. the canal. >> i took a few swigs of alcohol. >> reporter: on wednesday goodman said he'd been to three bars that night but wasn't drunk. a receipt from one bar showed he bought ten shots of te kwquila one time. >> one. >> reporter: he testified after the crash he stumbled into a

horse barn unlike most inside a sort of man cave where goodman says he found liquor and began to drink. >> when you saw the liquor, what did you think? >> i was in lots of pain and i drank some of the liquor. >> reporter: scott wilson's mother and father have each been paid an estimated $23 million in a civil settlement. almost every day his family is in court, as is goodman's girlfriend who he tried to adopt as his daughter in an effort to protect his millions. >> both sides are closely study ing the script from the last trial, but the defrs knows they have to make important changes in the way john goodman is presented. if not, he's going to get convicted again. >> reporter: john good. man said he has a speech impediment and that's why his speech is halting and mumbles. if he's found guilty of

vehicular homicide, he could face up to 16 years in prison. >> keri sanders down in florida, thank you very much. the weather did move out of florida and came up the east coast. how are we looking? >> we have both corners of the country looking on the wet side. first the pacific northwest has been looking at a lot of heavy rain and it's going to continue. storm systems one right after the other. seattle, more heavy rain today. we are looking at some areas that by the weekend could see cumulatively ten inches of rain. the next 24 hours, northern california about an inch or so. then we head to florida and moisture left over from that tropical depression down south, it's right now going from miami, key largo to key west. generally, cloudy skies, showers, thunderstorms continue through miami. we're going to be looking at generally about one to three inches from miami to the keys. some areas could pick up another four to six inches of rain in

back now at 7:40. this morning on rossen reports, more of our special series school danger zones. car crashes are a leading cause of death for kids, police say a lot of times parents are risking their because they're in a rush. today jeff rossen is here with an important warning. good morning. >> good morning. you get this, i know how tough it is getting your kids out the door each morning, getting them in the car and over to school on time. police say in that chaos, so many parents are making a dangerous mistake, forgetting to put their kids in seatbelts. by the way, it's not always tear parents' fault, if they are 7, 8, 9-years-old they can unbuckle temss when you are not looking. how many parents are caught doing it. wait until you see. why isn't the child buckled in or this one? >> is there any reason why none

national war memorial but made his way to the parliament building behind me here where he opened fire. he was eventually brought down, killed by the sergeant of arms at the parliament buildings. that sergeant of arms happen to have been a former police officer. now, more details are coming out about this young man. zehb-bibeau is the name he had adopted. they say he had converted to the islam. why is he doing this the investigation is still ongoing. all the members of parliament are gathering at the war memorial to pay their respects to the young soldier who lost his life here yesterday. >> kevin tibbles in ottawa, thank you. meanwhile, the footage that capture the gunfire in the parliament was shot by a reporter of the globe and mail. i spoke to him this morning about the police pursuit of the

afterwards? >> well, i felt aggravated. i felt i had helped them. so you address the symptom, but not the underlying problem. the underlying problem is their forgetfulness. i was trying to figure how to address that underlying issue. >> now, after you've done the no rescue method for awhile and you've allowed them to fail or miss a homework assignment even if it jeopardizes a grade, how do you feel after that? >> you know, i feel bad. i feel bad when i get the phone call. i got one phone call from school this year saying i forgot my cello could you bring it. just tell them you forgot just downstairs, actually. i got an e-mail saying do you know where my notebook is? >> so there is guilt attached to this even though you think you're doing the right thing for your forgettable children. >> yes. i think every parent has this impulse. i don't want to disappoint my child. the problem with helicopter parenting is it takes it too far.

you're not there to accommodate every need. you're there to help them grow and to be autonomous. >> my kids are very organized and conscientious. so you wouldn't employ this tactic with them because if they forget something it's a rare an honest mistake. >> correct. if you have a one-off instance -- everybody has a bad day. everyone deserves help especially from someone who loves them. the issue is more when you have a repeat offender. when you have somebody who keeps on not being responsible for their own stuff. then you need to address it. >> what kind of response? this has kind of viral since you put this up. what kind of response have you been hearing from other parents? >> i think people feel relieved. i think people feel there's this burden of guilt in parenting. and, look, if you're working full-time outside the home, you can't just respond to every beck and call of your kid. and moreover, not only can't you, but you shouldn't for your
