good morning. coming up on "early today," a tragic new development overnight. a second victim has died from friday's shooting at a seattle air high school. the condition of a new york doctor being treated for ebola entered a more serious phase as the key bait over quarantine keeps un. the tragic death of a st. lieus cardinals outfielder. and a touching tribute to robin williams at the world series. and hot lava is threatening homes in hawaii. it is monday, october 27th. "early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm milissa rehberger. new overnight, we learned one of the four students seriously wounded during last week's shooting at a washington state high school has died.

gia soriano suffered a head wound during the attack on friday. she died last knight. three other students remained hospitalized, two in critt well can. we have learned the victim who was killed on friday has been identified as zoe galasso. so far investigators have not released a motive as to why jaylen fryberg opened fire. nbc's brian mooar has the latest. ♪ >> reporter: in a washington state community shaken by violence, it was a day of prayer for the victims of this past week's school shooting. >> this is going to take time to process. for some it is going to take longer than others. >> a lot of questions aren't answered. and just don't know why. >> reporter: police know what happened but the motivation remains unclear. a fight and a breakup, possible clues. fryberg was described as popular, a homecoming prince just weeks before friday's deadly rampage. without warning, gunshots echoed through the cafeteria at

marysville-pilchuck high school, students sent running for their lives. >> he had a look on his face like he was realizing what he did. and i think he had a change of heart and if he wanted to, he could have gone on. >> reporter: witnesses say it ended when teacher megan silberberger tried to intervene. >> doesn't feel like a hero, feels like she just tried to protect kids. >> reporter: school officials say classes have been canceled this week as the community searches for answers and ways to heal. brian mooar, nbc news. the nation's latest ebola victim continues to be treated at a new york city hospital. officials say dr. craig spencer is in serious but stable condition. meanwhile, the white house is voicing concern over quarantined orders in new york and new jersey. nurse kaci hickox hired a lawyer after being quarantined in newark, new jersey. she recently had contact with ebola patients in west africa. her attorney says her rights are now being violated. her preliminary tests for ebola came up negative. nbc's jay gray is live outside

bellevue hospital where dr. spencer is being treated. what is the potential impact of the quarantine orders? >> reporter: hey, milissa, wide ranging with aid workers returning from west africa. let's start with the condition of dr. craig spencer inside bellevue here. his medical team saying he's actually showing some improvement. they're confident about their treatment plan here. there are, though, questions, concerns about new measures not only here, but in other states that officials insist are squarely just to keep the virus from spreading. specialists at bellevue say new york's first ebola patient dr. craig spencer has shown some improvement since receiving help from nancy writebol. she wrote, to share with someone who needed it is a blessing. spencer's fiancee who hasn't shown any symptoms of the virus has been sent home from the

hospital. a police officer stands guard outside the couple's harlem apartment where she's under a mandatory quarantine now. while nurse kaci hickox is in the hospital this morning, first health care worker who returned from west africa to a mandatory quarantine, something she told cnn is inhumane because she's not sick. hickox has tested negative for ebola. still, new jersey's governor defends his decision to keep her quarantined. >> i have people in new jersey as the first and foremost responsibility to protect our public health. >> reporter: a mandatory quarantine order for travelers who had direct contact is in place in new york and illinois also. >> this is going to be probably the safetiest protocol in the country. >> reporter: as concerning questions about how to contain the deadly virus seem to be growing. he says he'll continue to push to have her allow to go. that's the latest live here in

new york. back to you. >> thank you so much. new evidence could explain the motive behind the terror attack in ottawa, canada. they say evidence indicates that michael zehaf-bibeau was driven by ideological and political motives. police are not releasing the video at the time. they're also looking into the origin of the gun he used to kill a soldier standing guard at the war memorial. though the background investigation for a passport application did raise questions, zehaf-bibeau was not on a watch list. baseball's lost one of its future stars. oscar taveras died in a car accident sunday in his native dominican republic. he was behind the wheel of his chevy camaro before reportedly losing control and going off the road. his girlfriend was also killed in that accident. news broke during game five of the world series. bud selig said in a statement, with heavy hearts tonight we

play game five of the 2014 world series in the memory of these two young people. taveras made his major league debut this year and was considered a top prospect, he was only 22 years old. and san francisco, another tribute made prior to the game. the giants honored late comedian and actor robin williams who is known as an avid giants fan. first, they played some of his most memorable and laughable moments on the video board. and then his three children, came out to the mound, to throw the ceremonial first pitch to honor their father. it make the catch at home plate, williams' close friend, billy crystal. people in hawaii could soon be forced to flee in the face of a layoff lava flow. right now it is swallowing everything in its path. it is larger than a football field. not only is it 2,000 degrees fahrenhe fahrenheit, but still has

dangerous gases and particles. authorities are telling people to get ready to evacuate all of this from a volcano that started to erupt back in june. here is bill karins. >> amazing stuff. it is moving faster, was moving, like, 10 to 15 yards an hour, now 15 to 20 yards an hour. propane tanks caused pretty big explosions too. fascinating for something you don't hear about. we had a lot of rain, so far in october over 4 inches for portland and seattle. notice we haven't really gotten much, san francisco, southward, we're still in the dry season in l.a., vegas and phoenix. the next storm is two days away. a lot of people got their power back in the northwest. the warm front goes through first. you can still see the storm out here spinning. we're going to get a little bit of rain. this will not be like the last storm in the northwest. won't have the winds with it.

welcome back. stories making news this monday morning. 17 new air strikes hit key isis targets in iraq and syria this weekend. five of them were launched over kobani. the syrian city has been under siege now for 40 days. aggressive fire at a storage facility in los angeles left firefighters like this one with nonlife threatening injuries. in all, eight firefighters were hurt. most of them were treated for heat exhaustion. fire officials say the facility's metal roof prevented the heat and smoke from escaping. the medical community is weighing the pros and cons of a new at home test for colon cancer. it is called colo guard and less invasive than a colonoscopy. professionals say it could steer people away from undergoing the life saving procedure.

and ukraine could soon become more pro western thanks to yesterday's parliamentary voting. one person who wasn't allowed to vote, darth vader. his real name is victor shachenko, a candidate for the internet party but they didn't let him cast a ballot, because like the real vader, he refused to take off his helmet. time to get down to business. gas has fallen 18 cents per gallon in the past two weeks driven by a decrease in crude oil. the average price for regular is now $3.08 a gallon. cbs followed rite aid by cutting out the new apple pay system. one possible reason is the arrival of a competing mobile pay service called current sy which is being backed by walmart. a massive 6 pound gold nugget is sold at auction for a whopping $400,000. the buyer has asked to remain anonymous, probably for very good reason.

this morning on "today," there is new buzz that former florida governor jeb bush might be seriously considering a run for the white house in 2016. full details ahead on "today." now for a look at sports, over to my colleague betty nguyen. good morning, betty. >> good morning, milissa. the giants finished strong to wrap up game five of the world series at home. madison bumgarner with a big showing throwing a no hitter. first world series complete game shutout. to sunday night football on nbc, the saints dominate the packers in the superdome. drew brees airing it out, completing 27 of 32 passes for 3011 yards and three touchdowns to end the four-game winning

streak. saints win. a big day for big ben in pittsburgh. ben roethlisberger threw for a whopping 522 yards, the first player in nfl history to throw for at least 500 yards in multiple games. and he made steelers franchise history as the first quarterback with six touchdown passes and 40 completions winning over the colts. eagles and cardinals ended in a thriller. cards down by three with fewer than two minutes to go. a long shot downfield for a 75 yard touchdown pass. that sealed the win 24-20. the seahawks escape a third straight loss with a late touchdown in the fourth to toss the panthers 13-9. early morning game in london came down to the wire twice. they'll be called for a delay of game and they get to redo the kick. with a 48 yard field goal, the lions top the falcons, 22-21.

leading the news in the sydney morning herald, reeva steenkamp planned to leave oscar pistorius the night he killed her. her daughter's clothes were already packed. last week olympic sprinter oscar pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison for shooting and killing steenkamp. nbc connecticut, man wakes up to find stranger sleeping next to him. police in clinton, connecticut, say 26-year-old tyler sullivan wandered into the wrong home, drunk, of course, obviously, got into bed with a stranger. and then refused to leave. needless to say, he was arrested. >> lucky he didn't get hurt. >> you're right. other stories we're following today, more than 2300 americans have renounced their citizenship this past year and that number is increasing. experts say new tax rules that make it harder to hide assets

from authorities are partially to blame. thousands of lanterns floated across the skies of thailand last night, look at how beautiful that is. they were released as part of a yearly festival. it is believed that launching the hot air lanterns helps get rid of trouble. let's all launch a lantern. firefighters in arizona weren't horsing around when this guy fell into a swimming pool. it is not clear how the horse got into the pool, but a veterinarian had to use a tranquilize tranquilizer. the firefighters had to pull it out of the water. you can see he's okay. the department says the horse is doing just fine this morning. in what truly was a hairy situation, more than 300 men travelled to oregon this weekend to prove they have the best facial hair. you heard me right. contestants gathered to compete in the just for men world beard and mustache -- >> it looks fake. >> it does look fake. i was thinking the same thing.
