good morning, everybody. coming up on "early today," nasa suffers a catastrophic failure when an unmanned cargo rocket explodes moments after takeoff. slow moving lava reaches the first property in its path. why the federal government says millions of at&t customers have been deceived. plus, the pope's surprising thoughts on evolution and the big bang theory. the kansas sit toy royals and daniel radcliffe makes late night magic. it is wednesday, october 29th. a catastrophic anomaly. that is what they're calling this last night after a takeoff. no one was hurt. but the good news pretty much ends there. now this morning, nasa is left with that classic gut-wrenching question, what went wrong. nbc's dan scheinman reports. >> and we have liftoff of antares. >> reporter: seconds later antares rocket crashed back into the launch pad exploding into a fireball that could be seen for miles. burning debris rained down over nasa's launch pad. >> suffering a catastrophic anomaly shortly after liftoff. the range confirming no injuries and all personnel are accounted for. >> the safeguards both in flight and on the ground worked as they should have and all we lost was hardware. >> reporter: the rocket was carrying a signa spacecraft, loaded with 5,000 pounds of nasa supplies, experiments and equipment.

>> we're in good shape from a consumables supplies on the space station. there was no cargo that's absolutely critical to us that was lost on this flight. the crew is in no danger. >> reporter: the flight was the third resupply mission to the space station and marks the third accident after the space shuttles were retired in 2011. >> we have every confidence in the orbital team and their ability to get to root cause, resolve the issues and get back to flying to iss. >> orbital scientist frank culberson spoke to his team. >> thanks for all the hard work getting to this point. we will understand what happened soon and get back on track. >> reporter: a track that leads back to orbit and exploration. dan scheinman, nbc news. russia launched a cargo ship to the international space station without incident, carrying 5200 pounds of food,

fuel and supplies, expected to dock later today. now to hawaii and the natural disaster playing out in slow motion. new video from pahoa, the red hot ooze is moving 50 miles per hour and has already obliterated its first obstacle. here's nbc's halle jackson. >> reporter: this is the first big casualty of the pahoa lava flow. the first structure burned but it won't be the last as it oozes over town. it's been on its way for weeks since a volcanic eruption in june. now finally here, and people preparing to lose their homes are preparing for closure. >> so you will actually allow these folks to watch their homes burn? >> yes. an opportunity for them to go through a grieving process of losing what they've had for generations. >> and for the youngest generation here, a new school. >> we've been preparing for it so unfortunate but we're ready. >> reporter: at night the lava's

red glow an ominous presence. one the lee family can see from their yard. >> five generations in this house? their house may be next and they're doing everything they can to divert the flow bulldozing a massive berm in their back yard made of rocks, built on prayers. >> do you think it will work? >> it might. we're hoping. >> hope will not stop what's coming. the lava could cross the main highway and while officials are building routes, shane is still moving his tour business on the other side to hilo. >> there's no way to get tourists and locals or anybody that wants to go out on our boats or on a hiking tour out to this area. >> reporter: a way of life under fire. a red hot river unrelenting. halle jackson, nbc news, pahoa, hawaii. this morning a sobering stat in the ebola fight. it comes from the world bank, 5,000 more health workers are needed in the outbreak zones.

africa has promised more than 2,000. in maine, out of isolation but not out of controversy. nurse kaci hickox she will not obey the quarantine rules. in new jersey she threatened to sue after being put in an isolation tent. in dallas, amber vinson is back home, she became infected after treating thomas duncan who died from ebola. here is what she had to say. >> i ask that we not lose focus on the thousands of families who continue to labor under the burden of this disease in west africa. >> and at the white house, a not so subtle jab over the treatment of returning health care workers. >> i want to make sure that every policy we put in place is supportive of their efforts because if they are successful, then we're not going to have to worry about ebola here. >> now following last week's terror attack near canada's parliament, the u.s. is stepping up security at several federal government buildings. the homeland security department is calling this a security step. it will be increased in d.c. and

other major cities but no word on what specific buildings. homeland security secretary jey johnson called on law enforcement nationwide to be on the lookout for small scale attacks like the one in canada. the world series returned to kansas city for game six and the royals came out swinging. >> fly ball. shallow right. one run scores. here comes escobar. it's 4-0. >> sitting out there. shot over the head of crawford. it is 6-0. and to the gap in right center. blanco will not get there. 7-0. >> yeah, following that royal pitcher pitched seven shut out innings. he honored oscar tavares who died in a car accident in the dominican republic on sunday. the royals complete the shutout

10-zip. it is the largest world series shutdown since 1987 which by the way was won by kansas city. the final game seven is tonight. a lot /* lot of late nights for some of us here. >> thankfully, west coast time is not too bad. hopefully everyone can watch it and enjoy it. good luck. >> we're watching this halloween forecast, too. >> yes, the halloween forecast looks iffy. many areas of the country, the west included, even areas of california that haven't seen rain in forever have a chance of getting a little bit on halloween. this morning we're checking showers, onshore flow. a lot of wet weather. most in the olympics, not too much making into areas of the lower elevations. we will be watching a few showers around portland and even further to the south, on the border of california and also oregon by the medford area. we have showers that are going to try to move in. as far as the rainfall totals go, not a lot from today. we get the next front moving

through. it looks earlier in areas like seattle and portland that we should be okay for friday afternoon. also san francisco looks to be pretty much early in the morning on friday into the early portions of the afternoon. we should clear it out. l.a. has a chance of getting showers, too. trick-or-treating forecast does not look horrible. a lot of the wet weather from thursday night into friday morning will be earlier in the day. the forecast for your wednesday, showers out there once again. there's not a lot of wet weather and again we're dry in california at least for another probably 36 to 48 hours. degrees. further south we're watching mt. shasta about 62. pretty dry anywhere south of crescent city. i'll take a closer look at the halloween forecast coming up. >> you've got these costumes -- >> don't want the ghosts and goblins getting wet. >> especially covered up with

big bang are real. he clarified that god exists but is, quote, not a magician with a magic wand. former baseball slugger jose canseco is coming out of surgery this morning after accidentally shooting himself in the hand. it happened when he was cleaning his gun at his las vegas home last night. canseco's girlfriend was with him at the time of the accident. >> i heard the gun go off and i looked at jose and he told me to call 911. he pretty much blew his finger off. it was like hanging from a string. the gun did blow, you know, a part of the bone and we just found out that it also destroyed two -- one of the two main arteries in his finger. >> wow. well, facebook is recovering after it saw its price drop 9% yesterday, and now it could be on the verge of world domination. well, kind of. there are 1.3 billion people on facebook.

and as a reporter for "usa today" points out, that's nearly the population of the country of china. at&t is in trouble with the government again. earlier this month the company roochd a settlement with the feds. they're accused of charging millions of customers for unlimited data plans while actually reducing their speeds. more from tom costello. >> reporter: the government says it's happened to millions of at&t customers, going from lightning fast to turtle slow. maurice turner says it caught him off guard. >> in the last couple of years i've noticed that in the middle of my cycle, my billing cycle it gets throttled. data slows down to a crawl. it's almost like going back to dial up speed. >> reporter: for $30 a month he's been paying for at&t's unlimited data plan but the government accuses at&t of reducing or throttling its speeds by up to 90%. even though consumers would pay

for unlimited data, the throttling began after they used as little as two gigabytes in a billing cycle making it difficult or impossible to surf the web, use a gps or watch streaming videos. the government alleges 3.5 million customers were throttled more than 25 million times. >> unlimited means unlimited. if you slow down the service of customers who believe they're getting unlimited data, they're not getting unlimited data. >> reporter: at&t called the ftc's allegations baseless saying we have been completely trans parents with customers since the beginning. we informed all unlimited data plan customers via bill notices and a press release in a change of terms. >> at&t says only 3% of customers are affected but the ftc calls it a classic bait and switch, signing up customers and signing a promise and then changing the terms while still under contract. anyone who's had at&t unlimited service since 2010 and earlier could be affected.

just in time for halloween, jeff rossen put a real life ghost busters team to the test. kobe sharing the floor with former teammate dwight howard. later they shared elbows and words before both receiving matching technicals. it gets uglier. julius randall suffers a broken leg in his nba debut. he will undergo further evaluation. rockets win it 108-90. world champion spurs receive their rings prior to the match-up with the mavericks along with the unveiling of the banner in the rafters. both teams keeping it close, ginobili hits a shot at the buzzers to pull the spurs ahead. mavs down by one with a chance to win it. right there it is off the rim.

the spurs edge out the mavs 101-100. the pelicans win their season opener against the magic 101-84. the college football play-off selection committee unveiled the first college football player rankings. the fcc dominating three of the top four, mississippi state sits on top, followed by acc powerhouse florida state and then auburn and ole miss at three and four. the final rankings will be released on december 7th. one college student is $10,000 richer for making a few shots on the basketball court. this is what we're talking about here, this college senior made a layup, also a free-throw, a three-pointer and a half-court shot all in less than 30 seconds. really impressive. it earned him the ten grand in scholarship money. that's cool, that's great. well, he did it all with a broken finger. imagine what he could do with all healthy ten. just ahead, white house computers hacked. was anything grabbed?

leading the news in "usa today" some still waiting for help two years after san different billions of federal dollars were allocated to help the recovery effort. two years later, dozens of municipalities and dozens of home woeners are waiting for their checks to arrive. in "the chicago tribune," the city won't refund $7.7 million made from shorter yellow lights, despite the decision in september to restore a three-second yellow light minimum when issuing tickets via red light cameras. other stories we're following, activity of concern has been detected on the unclassified white house computer networks. officials say steps have been taken to address the suspicious activity. "the washington post" reports hackers working for the russian
