hopeful and confident. >> game seven, baby. we got it. >> we thought we'd give kansas city one more night to enjoy the world series and tomorrow we'll take it. >> we flew out here today, me and my best buddy, phenomenal day. today's great. the k.c. fans are great people. >> they are. >> great people. >> love you, man. love you. >> great people. >> but the giants are the champions, baby! >> reporter: so giants fans leaving disappointed but feeling confident about tonight. many have to shell out more money for another night at the hotel, another day for the rental car and those expensive tickets. i checked stub hub this morning, standing room only tickets going for $600. it was cheaper than yesterday's. so if you want to sit behind the dugout you have to pay more than $2,000. giants fans shelling out more money. it's all worth it if the giants take home the world series trophy. live from kansas city, janelle wang, "today in the bay." >> you're right there.

nothing to do with what's going to happen tonight. a lot of fans hoping the giants make history. this would be their third world series win in five years, if they were to win game seven tonight. disappointment last night as fans, thousands, watched the game, game six here became very depressing, very fast, within the second inning the royals had quite the lead. of course they did end up crushing the giants 10-0. as far as response from police for tonight, since there is going to be a final decision, they are prepared for celebration and for the possibility that fans might get out of control. we heard from san francisco police chief who tells us they will be boosting a number of officers they'll have on the street by 20% and they will be targeting specific areas in the city. >> the mission district, broadway, marina, geary boulevard, and now we have a

the game from maybe sports bar outside on the patio, temperatures comfortable, 5:00, 77 degrees in san francisco. by 7:00 down to 68, that's comfortable. but once that sun starts to drop off, cold air settles, down to 66. bring a jacket. if you're out there last night, notice a warmer viewing party tonight. rain on the way for your halloween. i know this is a high interest to not just the big kids, especially for the little kids. i've got a couple of things to talk about when it comes to the forecast. trying to avoid the heaviest time frame when it comes to the rain, you want to stay indoors from 1:00 to 5:00. things let's up after that time and it's not going to be heavy before we can get into lunchtime in the south bay. but that's the time frame we're watching for for the heavy downpours. if you want something to do indoors, you want to make a couple of plans to avoid those showers, fairfield at the jelly belly factory, daily tours from 9:00 to 4:00, a hountsaunted ho.

quick like, suspects serial arsonist accused of terrorizing san jose last winter could enter a plea in court. william patrick brennan charged with ten counts of arson and three counts of attempted arson. he admitted he started fires in january and knew the locations and times of each one. >> people in hawaii living near the path of a slowly moving lava flow have left town while others are ready to take off. the lava on the big island is 70 yards from homes in the town of pahalo. it's already burned tires and other materials. >> investigators trying to figure out what caused an unmanned rocket to explode on take-off. nobody was hurt on board, supplies for astronauts including 5,000 pounds of equipment and experiments. one of the experiments turned out to be from sixth graders at urban promise academy in oakland. 6:15. the federal open markets committee expected to announce it will quit spending money to

boost the economy. >> scott mcgrew, so-called quantitative easing coming to an end. >> that's right. qe to its friends, sam. really kind of a new thing for the federal open markets committee. a few years ago the primary job to raise or lower interest rates. after the big crash of 2009 that was not a powerful enough tool. they lowers interest rates to zero. the fed started buying things including mortgages, shopping mall, to try to inject cash into the economy. we do believe the fed will announce it's no longer going to do that. the economy can stand on its own without qe look a parent letting go of the back of the bike. we'll have to start pedalling on our own, at least in the economy. speaking of malls, new hope for a south bay mall struggling forever. chrkris sanchez live at vallco mall. somebody bought the big anchor stores, right? >> reporter: yeah. talking more than half of the property's owned by a single developer, and that is menlo

park base sand hill properties well known in the bay area for what they have done, not just menlo park but around the bay area. and they have now acquired the macy's store, sears store, and jcpenney. sears and jcpenney announced they were going to close these stores anyway. so fortuitous timing. but being able to say they can control the majority of the property, this means that though they have no plans they submitted to the city, they can start to move forward. based on the reporting of the silicon valley business journal, following this, looking at title and deeds. so this looks like it is a go. bad news two stores close in the near future. but the good news is that at some point perhaps something will happen. i think if you ask anybody here in cupertino, what about vallco? they'll say, yeah, somebody should do something about that. no one can seem to agree on what

exactly should happen here whether it should be traditional mall, more like a town square, whether it should have housing or retail. so a lot of that still in the works. scott? >> you've got the big apple campus across not far from there. that should help again rate something. >> reporter: sure. >> all right. kris sanchez, live at vallco. tech spending important to the local economy. last time we learned facebook's going to spend more money. mark zuckerberg says facebook will spend as much as 70% more on resent, acquisitions. not at the mall but still, that is music to ears of small companies hoping to be bought up by the big guy. facebook behaving like google these days. not content to be a social network, experimenting with all kinds of things including virtual reality. you remember google, also youtube and maps and self-driving cars and military robots. yesterday announced cancer research, a moon probe, they've had that for a while.

we need to be. we need storms to develop and hop down to the bay area. let's talk about where the bay area's eyes are concentrated later on this evening. that is on game seven, the fine game of the world series. weather again will play an impact. last night wind was not a big deal but the cold was. tonight it's going to be colder out there, kauffman stadium. first pitch 57. 50 degrees by the fourth inning. as you continue on through the game, between the fourth and ninth, we're talking about the 40s. it will be colder out there tonight. you'll get that dense sinking air. wind again on the light side. then this storm brewing for your halloween plans, unfortunately. it's a trick and treat. talking about water restrictions, the more rain, the less likely that will become a reality. friday, stop the clock, 11:00 a.m., showers. widespread activity between 11:00 and 5:00 the heaviest. everything clears out between 5:00 and 7:00. overnight, clearing trend.

saturday morning you're going to have lingering activity. trying to make outdoor plans, sunday is your day. plus, you'll be coming off an extra hour of sleep. >> i'll take that extra hour. better than candy. it's not better than candy. same as candy. 101, slowing here. we had a crash in that slower drive. over to the shoulder distraction for south bay. recovering into the south bay through palo alto, out of menlo park because of earlier debris spill. live shot, traffic flows nicely with headlights southbound past willow. the other side of the bay, fremont, southbound 880 into the area, slowing at tennyson out of hayward because of the crash involving motorcycle. it will add to the slowdown out of hayward and that's the traditional build. watch it again. i'll bring you more details. a stall across the bay bridge. look at toll plaza, we may have metering lights slow down so they can clear that stall from around treasure island exit.

>> reporter: we are at the origin of the lava flow. this is the kilauea volcano. moving fast underground, it's slowing down as it gets closer to the town but not stopping. the lava's traveling at a rate of 10 to 15 yards per hour, sometimes slowing down or speeding up, depending on the terrain. 40 to 50, maybe 60 homes and businesses could be in this flow's path. no mandatory evacuations in place yet. you are seeing in some cases folks packing up and leaving. but in other cases people staying until up to the last second. that's okay. hawaiian officials are allowing folks to watch as lava takes over their property. part of what they call the grieving process, allowing people to say good-bye to land that's been in families for generations. one school is closed indefinitely. students shuffled around because the school's in the lava's path. coming up on the "today" show,

the 31st of the month. unfortunately, that's the trick. but the rain itself is a treat. we're going to get maybe a quarter of an inch right here in the beautiful south bay. here's the deal. cold start, fog-free at the coast. you get clear sky. no blanket of low clouds to trap in any warmth from the day before. it all radiates back out in the atmosphere. as a result, it is chilly out there this morning. nonetheless, we're going to jump by 35 to 40 degrees over the span of the day above average by 10, 15 degrees. this is why i'm laughing when isao that. tomorrow, everything changes. our temperatures drop off. we bring in overcast sky. and then halloween night is going to look kind of spooky in the weather department. as we get into your evening hours, temperatures looking comfortable, if you're viewing that game from outdoors, temperatures are going to be nice tonight. look at that, san francisco, you're at 76 degrees and that will hold up.

east shore freeway continues to build, speeds drop down towards 15 mile an hour. carquinez bridge, no drama, not like yesterday. clear through vallejo and richmond. highway 37 out of vallejo towards navato smooth drive. and looking at tri-valley new york problems. focus on this crash south 880 at tennyson road, a crash blocking middle lane. motorcycle reported involved, no injuries but fast lanes blocked by additional activity. slowing out of hayward two fremont. rest of the bay typical pattern. southbound, 101, 87 slower speeds. palo alto, we had the earlier metal debris spill, reports of washingtons or something, whatever it was, no one injured as a result of the debris. they had traffic break, that cleared. >> thank you, mike. 6:35. markets open for a few minutes. >> let's check numbers with scott mcgrew.

happening now, president obama is meeting with american health care workers who have been on the front lines in the fight against ebola. he does not want them to be discouraged from helping ebola patients in west africa. president will talk with members of his public health and national security teams, they'll be discussing the government's response to that virus. >> joan rivers' daughter hired a law firm to find out what led to her mother's death. the new york city-based firm confirmed it was hired to "us weekly," planning to file a lawsuit against the clinic where her mother was undergoing a throat procedure. she went the clinic to find out why her voice became ras pi. . you remember former star jose canseco, recovering, after he apparently shot himself in the hands while he says cleaning has gun.

one moment. before i tell you about your current temperatures i want to tell you what's coming our way for the next few weeks. that's a significant pattern change. so right now we're in the 40s, we'll jump by 35, 40 degrees over the span of the day, ending up in the 80s. but this, my friends, is it, when it comes to the warm temperatures dive. next two days, they stay below average through the next seven to eight days. looking really good for that game tonight at kauffman stadium. first, your kansas city forecast. then i'll show you what to expect if you are headed out to civic center park. game seven, big game, first pitch 57 degrees, cold, dense air like last night. i don't think wind is going to play a factor. when you have cold, dense air coupled with high humidity that you get out there in kansas city, it tends to keep the ball from traveling. between the fourth and ninth inning is when you want to watch

really jamming up north 87, coming into downtown, i heard about a crash toward the interchange, that may be tying things up as well as burst of traffic. 101 slows around capitol expressway, things get better toward the airport. unusual pattern. rest of the bay smoothly towards the bay bridge. slowest drive for 580, approaching toll plaza where metering lights are on. fas-trak lanes actually moving. we've had no dramatic effect after the stall reported around treasure island that has cleared. roadway's smooth towards san francisco. >> thank you. the question, what went wrong? a rocket exploded moments after take-off. officials scouring for debris and answers. nanette miranda joining us. >> some sixth graders from the urban promise academy in oakland had an experiment on the rocket. but like all things on board it's been lost. unmanned rocket headed to the international space station

carrying supplies when something went wrong just seconds after takeoff. the rocket from contractor orbital science explodes and crashes down to the launchpad. located in wallace island, virginia. the 14-story rocket plunged to the ground in a ball of fire. the fiery descend could be seen for mile nopz one was hurt. the first accident for nasa since turning to private contractors for space delivery. >> a tough time to lose a launch vehicle like this and payload, not as tragic as losing a life with. we're happy to report no injuries and the safeguards in flight and on the groundworked as they should have. >> most damage confined to the launch site facilities. a russian rocket lifted a few hours later with supplies and arrived at the space station a few moments ago. spacex has a contract with nasa to resupply the iss, supposed to launch in december. >> thanks so much. 6:53.

new hope this morning, south bay mall struggling for decades. one of silicon's valley's most prolific real estate developers bought three of the four buildings there. kris sanchez at vallco shopping mall. >> reporter: ask anybody here in cupertino, what about vallco. >> somebody should do something. the problem is there's never been a consensus about what to do. that could change now that sand hill properties out of menlo park acquired three of the big box stores, talking about macy's, talking about sears, talking about jcpenney's. last two sears and jcpenney's said they were dgoing to close because of national downsizing strategy. but with acquisitions, sand hill properties owns 32 acres of the vallco shopping center property, that is more than half. they have greater control over what happens here. this is prime real estate across the freeway from apple's spaceship campus.

even as the developer benefitted from good timing with sears and penny's national downsiding, developing vallco is not going to be easy. it noose plans for development here and no approval from the city and the city's cautious about how it goes forward with changing its general plan. that is still in the works by the way, there's also matter of a lawsuit that has kind of tied up a lot of the sites interior part of the mall. too much inside baseball on that except it has stalled a plan for development of the inside of the mall. now that sand hill properties has control of the majority, perhaps that will change. changing everything and nothing for now at least. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> changes everything and nothing. for more of today's top business and tech headlines, let's turn to scott mcgrew. >> good morning. apple rolling out software, sam, in the last couple of weeks, apple pay registering more than 1 million credit cards in the
