good morning. i'm vicky nguyen. four people dead in the north bay boating accident. what they didn't do that could have saved their lives. bay area doctors on their way to the ebola hot zone. hundreds of thousands packed the streets for the world series victory parade. did the ride home set the transit record that were set at the 2012 parades? this is today in the bay. your time now 7:00. we're giving you a live look at

san francisco. clear skies but very chilly. good morning and thanks for joining us. let's check in on your mic microclimate forecast. good to see you back. i've missed you. >> it's good to have you back. we're looking at clear skies. it's cold out there this morning. you may have had to flip that heater on overnight. we're at 36 degrees in hillsburg. you can notice an avenrage of lw to mid-40s. lart later on this afternoon we'll see clear skies across the board. we'll see if there's any rain in our future and get you into this next workweek coming up in a bit. a deadly start just hours into the bay area crabbing

season. four people died and one is recovering this morning after a wave smashed into their fishing boat. it happened yesterday morning around 10:00. the boat was south of the entrance to the harbor. the group had just returned from a crabbing trip when wave capsized their boat sending every one on board into the rough and cold water. a sheriff's helicopter pulled phillip sanchez to safety after he managed to swim to a rock. that's him there in a t-shirt and jeans. he suffered a leg injury. the four other passengers on the boat died including the owner, that's 79-year-old jesse langley. a fourth victim is a woman who has nod yet been identified. >> the water temperature is very cold. this is where you need to have your life jacket on and understand what kind of weather you're getting into and be extremely careful. >> life vests were available on the boat but officials say none of the passengers was wearing

one. both the coast guard and sheriff's office are investigating the accident. the blast was so strong it shattered windows of nearby homes and could be heard miles away. some residents in walnut creek are heading back to their homes to get what they can after an explosion rocked their apartment complex. several apartments were too damaged to live in after the explosion friday. it happened at a residential building. investigators believer it was caused by a hash oil lab. two people inside that unit with the most damage were in critical condition with burns. other residents are now trying to clean up. >> the unit has damage. it's livable but there's a lot of repairs that have to be done. door, nails coming through, pictures off the wall. >> some residents say they are staying with family or friends. the red cross has offered help those who need place to stay. a million dollars worth of illegal marijuana is offer the streets this morning after

neighbors tipped off gilroy police. officers swooped in. inside they found more than 500 marijuana plants in various stages of growth. police say the operation has ties to a south bay gang. the search continues this morning for the person who shot and killed man in broad daylight in san francisco's western addition. the victim was shot in the torso and died at a hospital a short time later. it happened 9:00 yesterday morning. the name of the victim has not been leased. police have also not made any arrests. two bay area businesses busted for prostitution. officers were tipped off last month to the illegal operations at the union spa and salon on mission street and sh body therapy in daily city. police say during undercover operations both businesses, a massage parlor employee solicited an officer for sex.

the cases have been turned over to the da's office for prosecution. several day area hospitals are heading to the ebola hot zone. despite the risk they say there's a lot of work to be done. the assignment means weeks or months away from their family and an uncertain welcome when they return home. joe fryer talked to one san francisco doctor who is prepared to leave in a couple of days. >> reporter: he's making the most of his weekend with 2-year-old daughter anya. >> you want to do two ponytails or one? >> reporter: next week he leaves for a month long trip to liberia to join the fight against ebola. >> how important is this equipment? >> this is matter of life and death. >> reporter: for three days he's trained at the centers for disease control. >> i believe i'm well equipped to go. doesn't mean i'm not scared. >> reporter: when he returns he plans to be quarantined for 21 days but his wife knows that

still may not alleviate some fea fears. >> i think some people may be nervous being around him even after the quarantine. >> reporter: his employer, the university of california san francisco wants health care workers to go. the university is set up a system for employees to give their vacation days to those heading to west africa. so far more than 660 hours have been donated. on top of that doctors are voluntarily picking up shifts for co-workers going overseas. she fears many won't go. >> the stigma and the concerns about the quarantine worry me. it worries me because of the risk of loss of many other health professionals who might choose to go there. >> reporter: he hopes the quarantine will reduce the fears thoe of those around him. >> doipi don't want the focus t on me. >> reporter: he might go a couple of months without seeing

let's give you a live look outside this sunday, november 2nd at san jose. we'll take you to our emoryville camera looking out at the bay. you'd think it was a beautiful summer morning but it's crisp and cold out there. anthony will be by in a moment to tell you what to expect. grief and outrage in southern california where a hit and run driver killed three girls two blocks from their home. it happened friday night. they were in a crosswalk when

the crash happened. two of the victims were 13-year-old twin sisters. friends and family are crushed. >> hard. i knew them since i was six. now they're gone. >> i hope some way they can feel the same way i'm feeling right now. >> police have found the suspected car abandoned just a few blocks from the scene. this morning the driver is still at large. it may be a year before we learn what caused the deadly crash of a virgin galactic spacecraft in the mojave desert. the pilot is 39-year-old michael tiner. the second pilot parachuted from the plane and has been hospitalized. he's alert and talking. investigators may be gathering information for the next week. because it was a test flight there was a great deal of data

cold out there but clear skies today. let's take you over to san francisco where it's looking picture perfect. if you took public transportation getting to and from the giants victory parade you probably felt a little squished. you shared a ride with thousands of other fans using cal tran and bart. the figure is the third highest in history. the top spot still belongs to the giants 2012 parade. the second spot goes to the 2010 parade. if you're wondering, typical ridership came in at just under 437,000 riders. the megamillion jackpot continues to grow after no one, including the nbc bay area pool picked audiotape six wll six wi in the drawing.

the winning ticket is worth more than $604,000. the current jackpot is more than 321 million. the winning numbers will be picked next tuesday. a welcome sight this weekend for snow lovers. the rain blew through the bay area and managed to stay on the ground as it passed over lake tahoe. some places saw up to a half inch of the snow. it provided an early season test for drivers on interstate 80. >> you realize you have to go slow. >> we had one guy almost spin out in front of us. >> the winter storm warning is now over. it ended yesterday morning. not quite any snow on the ground here in the bay area but it's really chilly out there. >> if it rained or any precipitation came down from the

sky it would probably come in the form of snow. we're talking about temperatures in the 30s. let's talk about one of our coldest locations, healdsburg. looking outside your camera network and it looks nice and sunny and warm but don't be deceived today. it's chilly this morning. had the turn on the heat over night. you may have to do the same thing especially tonight is expected to be just as cold. notice across the board south bay from the north bay. that crisp is in the air. the fall like weather is across the board this morning. 68 for your avenue ray high. mid-60s for the rest of the bay with the north bay expecting near 70 degrees. a completely different story from what we saw yesterday. we had rain, thunderstorms across the santa cruz mountains. it's going to be clear all day long. the fog does return near the coastline and we'll have some of

our inland valleys by tomorrow morning. a foggy start tomorrow. we'll continue with this northwest flow. you typically get that when you have systems pass by and you get the cold air that starts to filter in behind it. over next couple of days we'll be talking about temperatures in the lower 70s and maybe the mid-70s. that's about as warm as it will get. everybody else is expected to see 50s at the coast and even 60s. you'll notice plenty of sunshine across the board. jacket weather for the south bay. no fog for today. tomorrow you'll see the fog. the east shore 6 very comfortable weather there. san francisco fall free this morning and for the rest of the day tri-valley mainly sunny skies with temperatures near 68 degrees. that's a look at what we have happening today. the other thing we have happening is the rams are in town taking on the 49ers. game time at 1:00. temperatures will be near 70

degrees in the stadium. as we head through the game temperatures falling very quickly. by 5:00. our sun goes down at 6:00. by 5:00 once the sun starts to hit over the horizon we'll see temperatures fall back to near 60 degrees. a bit of taste of san francisco. we're going to continue to see this fall-like area or fall-like weather stream into the area. you'll notice today and tomorrow temperatures very uniform. by the time we get into tuesday, wednesday and thursday we see temperatures climb a bit in san jose. you'll notice in san francisco we're not going to warm up a whole lot but mid-70s by wednesday and thursday. there will be a storm system that passes to our north. something we have to watch but looks like we'll remain dry. overall we have the rain. yesterday we're happy about that and now we just sit back and let the hills turn green over the next few days and hopefully we'll see rain coming up if not this week then next week. back over to you. still ahead on today in the

there's a place in andover, massachusetts where they are experts at preserving history. the northeast document conservation center is like a hospital for old books, documents and photographs. a place they go to get their lives extended or in the case of this 70-year-old 78 rpm broken record, be brought back to life. 21st century technology recovering 20th century sound that matt has waited decades to hear. >> i think i'm going to have to hold my breath because it's going to be emotional. >> reporter: the sound on that record is the voice of matt's grandfather, ray. lieutenant ray a b-24 bombdier flew 50 missions. he returned to the state, started family and moved to the

bay area. he passed away when his grandson matt was ju8 years old. >> i want to know the story behind the pictures. >> there's no doubt this is a personal search. >> reporter: matt, at time a television reporter poured himself into the research. eventually producing a two-part tv series about his grandfather's service tracking down and interviewing surviving crew members to hear their stories of his grandfather, yet still lacking something matt would have loved to had. >> the voice of my grandfather. i never had it for those stories that i told. it was the one missing link. >> reporter: missing until matt

found these this year in the garage of his grandmother's home while helping her move. upon returning from the war ray sat down for an interview. an interview they recorded on two 78s. records matt family's lost track of years and years ago. now they were so close, literally in his hands yet still lost in a way. it was was back to research again, to uncover the audio which led him to andover and technology developed where camera captures high resolution images of the records grew and the computer processes the pictures into sound. sound that matt, along with his father are about to listen to

for the first time. >> all right. here we go. >> he's a flier. i believe he comes from omah. >> yes, sir, i do. >> what were you doing before the war? >> i was working in the grocery. >> reporter: once matt and his father got over how young ray sounded they settled in to listen to a ten-minute interview made 70 years ago. >> we moved. >> reporter: a small piece of american history, perhaps, but one that couldn't sound any bigger to one man's ears. >> i'm just really glad we got it done. this is precious. this is it. it's really nice to finally hear it and to be able to pass it on. >> that was just the first time they listened to the recording. he promises he will listen to it many more times again. he certainly waited long enough

where things couldn't be more beautiful. however, it is cold. if you're stepping outside, bring the coat. there's the golden gate bridge. we have some runners and a marathon that's happening today through 9:30 this sunday, november 2nd. great to have you with us. i'm vickie nguyen with anthony slaughter standing by. the temperature kind of dropped. >> it's cold out there. i was looking at the image to see if anybody had on a coat or jacket. looks like they had shorts, long sleeves. long sleeves definitely a good idea this morning. make a jacket or hoodie. definitely need the extra lawyer. we're at 36 degrees. 46 in the south bay and san francisco up against the water you get the ocean breeze. it doesn't feel as cold. with the pacific around 55 degrees it keeps san francisco right near 55. 53 this morning. they'll have a nice recovery

even near 70 on the south bay. temperatures slightly warmer than yesterday. we're going to have the breeze really kick up. it's going to feel about the same as yesterday, chilly. >> i can't believe we're seeing some 30s up in the north bay. >> i know. it's november. here we are. tragedy in the first few hours of the bay area crabbing season. four people die and one person is recovering after a fishing boat capsized in bodega bay. it happened around 10:00 yesterday morning. investigators say the boat was hit by a wave that flipped the boat and sent five people into the rough and cold water. a sheriff helicopter pulled phillip sanchez to safety after he swam to a nearby rock. he suffered a leg injury. the four other passengers on board the 32-foot fishing boat died including the owner. the fourth victim is a woman who

prosecutors dropd arson charges against stephen peterson. they new evidence doesn't support any charges file e ed against him. he was released on friday. his charges were transferred to the other suspect in the case. five homes were also red tagged. the fires caused nearly $3 million in damage. a bay area ice cream truck driver is facing dui charges. he's accused of having a blood alcohol level four times the legal limit. the chp arrested the man on halloween in parking lot in santa rosa just as children were getting ready to trick or treat. deputies were tipped off to man stumbling out of his ice cream truck. the chp identified him as

57-year-old hardiv. shundreds of guns rifles an other weapons are out of commission this morning at a bay area gun buyback program. gun owners were able to cover in as much as five guns. organizers say the goal is to get guns out homes, off the streets and way way from criminals. people got up to $200 cash per weapon. the turns in guns will be destroyed. decision 2014 is just two days away. one of the most important measures on tuesday's ballot is a question about california's water or lack of it. prop 1 is igniting passions on both sides. >> my mom and dad weren't farmers. i didn't marry a farmers

decades. >> it's the most important piece of legislation that i'll have a chance to go on. >> reporter: the bond could bo toward a slew of projects. >> i invest in waste water recyclings, increased storage. >> reporter: a third of the money will build several any dams and reservoirs. >> there's a large chunk of money in the bond to improve storage and offset our loss of snow pack and to help us have water for these drought conditions. the drought has fueled the fight over the state's dwindling water supplies pitting farmers against environmentalists and fishermen. the lines are now etched deeply in the details of prop 1. >> we don't need to get the bulldozers out and all the heavy equipment. >> reporter: berkeley fisherman mike hudson calls it waste of money. he says it won't fix the water

launch the next big deal. as part of innovation day 30 students explored engineering milestones that helped shape the technology that we use today. they hope it will inspire the students. their goal is to come up with a new product or service that could transform every day life. >> end goal is to get kids into solving real world problems and looking at fresh guys coming up with new ideas and really helping them to recognize opportunities, helping them to find the target market, identify their customers and really plan out an innovation. >> students will have chance to submit their ideas to the world series innovation competition. standing up for those who can't do it themselves. that's why hundreds of people and their pets took to the streets around san francisco this weekend for a fund raising walk. donations will help you see and care for farm animals that were

48 hours from now those whoa haven't voted by mail will have their opportunity to do so in person. nbc bay area political analyst joins us with his assessments of the fall campaign. midterm elections, people don't get super excited about this. >> re-election is different. there's some lessons from this

one just like the others. the lessons are for veterans. mid term election spending here to out the nation, everywhere will break because of recent supreme court decisions. with that in this midterm election the voters are more than angry. they are disengaged. some of that is because people aren't investing in the process. a few will decide for the many on tuesday. that's got some people thinking. third, let's look at baby steps for the republican party in california. it's been such a one-party state

he here, the democratic state. now there's a glimmer of hope. a glimmer of hope with the gubernatorial candidacy. he's a fresh voice an a fresh face. >> we have two very big mayor's races happening in oakland and san jose. what's the san francisco of these two campaigns in two of the most significant and the biggest city in the bay area. >> two systems. it's really a tale of two dramatically voting systems dealing with the same dominant issue, crime. oakland has what we call rank choice voting where people have the opportunity to select not just one but the first, second and third choices. that mean a person who gets fewer first place votes could become mayor if he or she has enough second and third place votes to get there.

it's so confusing to just about everyone and i would say including the candidates. that presents a different scenario altogether in san jose. with the crime area, that measure b that was passed two years ago. in this traditional two-person runoff, sam has said that the city is better off because of the restriction. his opponent countered it stems from the overreach of measure b. in a sense, this election is a referendum on the past and on the leadership of outgoing mayor chuck reed. it's a hot one and been watched all over the country. >> one quick question about the oakland voting system. it's confusing for voters and sometimes the candidates themselves. are you better off voting just one person or required to vote all three? >> you can vote for one.

actually those who sort of strategize moderate it and keep the other guys out the way. >> given the gridlock, what can you say to help encourage votes to get out and still make their vote count? >> two kinds of elections, good and badder. with that thinking no election is waste. each is a build up for the next election. the results for this coming tuesday's contest will help set the political agenda for the next two years as well as the presidential election in 2016. it's really the next chapter in a never ending book. the problem is too few of us are reading anything. >> that's what we have you here for to help us. thank you very much. keep it right here. much more ahead. coming up, it's one of the

good morning. we have very chilly air outside this morning. temperatures cold across the board. you can see we're averaging 40s for the most part. 41 in the north bay. quite a frosty start to the day.

very fall-like as well. you'll notice clear skies, a very different story from what we saw yesterday when we were talking about tons of rainfall across the mountains where they got one to two inches of rain. today no rain in the forecast. clear skies from the time it came up till the time the sun goes down. we're looking at 68 for the south bay. a little cooler in the east shore. they'll see temperatures in nids 60s later on this afternoon. north bay, you'll have a nice recovery. 70 expected there. it will be sunny. the fog that we're so used to seeing will be back tonight. as soon as about 6:00, 7:00, cloudy skies expected by 10:00 as the fog movers in. we'll see a foggy start to the commute and the day tomorrow. keep that in mind as you get out and head to work. this cold air is all because we had a cold one come through. that was responsible for the

rain that we saw for two days in a row and responsible for the snow that we saw across the sierra. now we're stuck many that northwest flow. that's very typical when you get the cold fronts that come through. that means very chilly air is continuing to filter on in through the bay. we'll see temperatures today and for the next few days in the lower 7 0s for our inland valle. for today, jacket weather. you'll be at 68. for the north bay that's a nice recovery. 70 expected there. plenty of sunshine for the peninsula. the east shore just a tad bit cooler. very comfortable and plenty of sunshine. it's going to be fog free until about 6:00 this evening. you'll notice for the tri-valley nice, mainly sunny. the theme to note this week is while we had the rain those hills that have been so brown and just really looking like burnt orange over the past few days, well, they will start to turn green as when he had through this upcoming week.

we have rain across the board from north bay to the south bay. that will be some really good news in helping for our fire threat. you'll notice today at the 49ers stadium we'll be looking at temperatures very comfortable. plenty of sunshine and a nice cool breeze. 70 will do it for the high there as temperatures fall quickly back in the lower 60s by 5:00. it will be very chilly this evening. you'll note as we head through the next few days get a bit of a rebound as we head towards wednesday and thursday and temperatures climb close to 80. you'll note in san francisco not much of a rebound. we'll see temperatures back into the mid-70s. that's as warm as we'll be talking about as we head through the next few days. enjoy today. keep the jackets handy. over the next few days i think you'll be able to get rid of them. another system slated to move north of the bay area by thursday. a few more clouds expected then. overall, no rain this week. sit back and watch the hills turn green.
