who served this country so bravely over the years. >> and remember the sacrifices their families made so we can have the freedoms we have. >> we will talk more about that in the morning. also to our top story, a nasty winter storm once again. accidents are piling up in wisconsin, michigan and minnesota and temperatures are plun plunging. dylan dwyer is bundled up. >> good morning. today is day two in minnesota. the ice covering the streets caused hundreds of accidents across the state and sadly was responsible for at least two deaths. now, parts of the rockies and midwest are covered with a foot of snow. it's early november. all this snow is going to melt away quickly, right? not quite. these sub-freezing temperatures are going to stick around for a long long time. much of the nation's mid-section is already frozen with minnesota

getting the worst of it monday. >> go back, straighten the wheels a little bit. >> reporter: a semi-truck stranded, and jackknifed off a highway and police reporting accidents statewide. south of minneapolis, entire neighborhoods blanket by snow, but some school districts remained open. parts of wisconsin were slammed by up to 18 inches of snow monday, more expected today. in south dakota, snow plows ruled the roads as residents dusted off their shovels with scrapers. >> for me, it's a little early but there's not much we can do. >> reporter: as the storm moved east overnight, parts of michigan pummeled with heavy snow, more than a foot expected before it's over. with nonstop snow and pre-thanksgiving polar vortex, people across the country are wondering if this winter could

be just as brutal as last years that saw record temperatures and snowfall totals across the midwest. >> has fallen in multiple cities, six weeks before the official start of winter. eventually, the snow will stop falling but temperatures sure won't. in fact, we should bottom out down in the single digits and beyond tonight. afternoon high temperatures will not get above freezing for at least two weeks. al, it's not just this part of the country but most of the country feeling that deep freeze. >> that's right. it's going to be stretching from the pacific northwest all the way to the southeast. show you exactly what's going on. we have snow making its way toward the up of michigan, milwaukee as well. looking at light snow and rain as it turns colder. snowfall amounts, we're looking at another 12 to 15 inches of snow through the u.p. of michigan and parts of northern wisconsin and then there's the cold punch.

rapid city feels like 13, grand isle, feels like 2 below and kansas city, ahead of the system, memphis at 60. it's 60 in houston. by wednesday look at these temperatures, feeling like 34 in san antonio. huntsville, 19 in chicago. gets even worse as we get on to thursday. kansas city, feels like 12. denver, 4 below. by friday, that chill stretch from boston where it will feel like 31, down to atlanta, 21. houston feels like 36 degrees. this cold air will be in place and be reinforced for at least two weeks. >> thank you very much, we think. the last ebola patient here in the u.s. is heading home this morning after being declared free of the virus. dr. craig spencer became infected while in guinea but his symptoms developed only when he returned to new york city. national correspondent kate snow is in bellevue hospital this morning. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good

morning. this is the first time in months no one in america is being treated for ebola. we will expect to hear from dr. craig spencer shortly and make a statement at the hospital and head home ebola-free. it's been 19 days since an ambulance delivered dr. craig spencer to the hospital, another example of american medical care beating this deadly disease with the help of blood donated by a survivor. >> i'm happy to give dr. spencer plasma that he needs. >> reporter: today, the hospital says dr. spencer poses no public health risk a stark contrast to the fear when he was first diagnosed. >> they should stay home. >> reporter: went bowling and ate at a meatball shop and took a car before getting the fever. >> ebola is very difficult to contract. being on the same subway car or living near a person with ebola does not in itself put someone

at risk. >> reporter: local officials scrambled to reassure new yorkers no one would get sick. so far no one has. but those fears led to new york and new jersey imposingie goin imposing mandatory quarantines and let to the fight from a nurse who fought quarantines and had everybody talking. >> my job is not to protect her. >> for halloween, i handed out a thousand mm-mmms with my bare hands. >> and last night the 21 damontoring period for caskaci hickox ended and plans to visit baltimore and new york before settling in a new place in southern maine. dr. spencer has an apartment in new york city. his fiance has been under quarantine. he had contact with health care workers and they will have to monitor them now for the next 21 days. >> kate snow, thank you very much. matt. >> thanks.

lets go to politics now. it's been just one week since the mid-term elections but the race is already heating up for 2016. former president bush said he knows his brother jeb can deal with being a president and president obama goes to asia and meets russian president vladimir putin. and the author of a new book, chuck todd, called "the stranger." >> and in asia at the summit, he wants to project an air of strength from the united states but he's coming off a big loss. >> he is. but in many ways going out of the country is the easiest thing to do. he did a similar thing after the last midterm shellacking and throw himself in foreign policy, but foreign policy ain't going so hot for him with the face to face showdowns with putin where there was that uncomfortable moment today or yesterday.

>> we have one president licking his wounds, barack obama, does that have vladimir putin licking his chops, sensing weakness? >> i think he always sensed weakness but the president has tried hard not to play into that stereotype too much and knows putin loves the theatrics so much the way barack obama hates theatrics. >> and to 2016, george w. bush told savannah yesterday he knows his brother can do the job. a lot of people are asking the question, can jeb bush win primaries in conservative states. >> from what i understand if he run, the people around him are of the idea he wouldn't try winning conservative primaries. if he got into the race it would be a general election campaign. the way rudy guiliani did. >> that brings up a bad memory because he didn't do so well. >> he didn't.

but they can't win in iowa where there's a bunch of other conservatives. he has two issues so unpopular. his stance on immigration and stance on education. it is like pouring gas on a fire. >> you think he will run? >> my gut says no. >> let's talk about barack obama, your new book is called "the stranger." you analyze what his legacy might be and in the foreseeable future, a president whose potential wasn't realized. he came to washington promising to change the political divide and change the discourse. was that his biggest failure? >> he was the guy at the 2004 convention and said he would stop this divide 24 years of red versus blue. he will admit some day that's his greatest disappointment. that's what this book about, the struggles to change washington. did he go with washington more than change it? >> he ran as a stranger six years ago and now that word

stranger is seen as a negative for him. >> i think so. >> now, to natalie to the other top stories. >> we begin this morning with a fight against isis and the syrian town at the center of the battle is kobani. richard angel has seen the fighting firsthand and joins us now from the turkish border. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. kobani has become a symbol in the war against isis. the militants are determined to take the city yet it's still holding on and we finally managed to get into kobani. the center of kobani is no more. a ghostly testament to the price this syrian town is paying for standing up to isis. but the town isn't abandoned. its kurdish people, men and women, have taken up arms and have been holding out for two months. they run through intersections to avoid enemy snipers or stay

off the dangerous streets by toneling through walls. 34 years old, one of the top field commanders. many of the front line fighters here are women. they say the islamic fanatics from isis are afraid to be killed by a women, a dishonor the militants believe could cost them a spot in paradise. she doesn't believe that. they are afraid because of our conviction and our strength, she says, our female comrades aren't scared of isis. she took us to kobani city hall, now a front line position. she says there were about 40 isis fighters just in these rooms here. not that they're fighting between buildings and across streets, but room to room. the people of kobani have shown they will fight to the last man and woman. so many other towns have collapsed as soon as isis militants arrived. not kobani. natalie.

36 years in jail. he was among 15 crew members on trial over the sinking. the court also convicted the ship's chief engineer of homicide and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. more than 300 people died when that overloaded ferry capsized last april. a river with slow moving lava has finally reached a rural town on hawaii's big island consuming its first home. plumes of smoke could be seen for miles. no one was hurt and at least 50 residents in the projected path have been urged to evacuate. right now, officials say there are no other homes in imminent danger. in our latest installment of crazy animal video, something you don't see everyday. take a look at this deer in ohio. he got caught with his head in a candy jar and after running around almost a week with it on his head. the neighbors have been trying to help him for days and couldn't seem to catch up with it.

rivers suffered a fatal complication during a medical procedure. nbc's stephanie gosk has more on that. steph, good morning. >> good morning. this report lists what it calls multiple failures. among the most alarming, when rivers's vital signs started to drop, the medical team did not respond fast enough. lawyers for melissa rivers say she is outraged. the report identifies a list of mistakes the day joan rivers walked in for a routine throat procedure at yorkville. an ear, nose and throat doctor performing the procedure did not actually have privileges to work at the clinic, while another member of the team took cell phone photos of rivers after she was sedated. levels of the drug propofol, used for sedation, were inconsistently recorded, and rivers's weight, which could have been a guide for how much propofol to use, was never measured. the report conducted by the department of health and human services says doctors failed to react fast enough to a drop in vital signs. at least 15 minutes later, the

comedienne went into cardiac arrest. >> there were two kind of conflicting reports about when she actually went into cardiopulmonary arrest. so, all of the details are a bit murky, and that's exactly what you don't want in a medical record. >> reporter: in a response, yorkville endoscopy said it "immediately submitted and implemented a plan of correction that addressed all issues raised." the clinic remains open, while the physicians no longer practice there. as for melissa rivers, her lawyers say she will direct her efforts towards "ensuring that what happened to her mother will not occur again with any other patient." because of the mistakes listed in the report, yorkville lost its medicare and medicaid funding, but if the clinic passes a surprise inspection in the coming months, they will get that funding back. savannah? >> a lot of disturbing details in that report. stephanie, thank you so much. look who's here. tamron hall is in. carson still working on "the voice." and what are you talking about in the orange room? >> this is very interesting. so, listen, a lot of people woke

up this morning and the name joseph smith was spiking on twitter. >> who's that? >> the founder of the mormon church. >> oh. >> so, he's, of course, died 170 years ago, but he's now trending as a result of an essay actually released by the mormon church. now, the essay itself altered the fundamental belief that joseph smith wed one woman, when he actually wed as many as 40. why is this significant and important? elder steven e. snow, a member of the church's leadership, said the reason for coming up with any new information is "there is so much out there on the internet that we felt we owed our members a safe place where they could go to get reliable, faith-promoting information that was true about some of these more difficult aspects of our history." by the way, this essay is part of a three-part series. but as the elder in this church mentioned, it's a difficult part of the history but one, obviously, the church is ready to discuss in some form.

resume to thousands of companies, including over 500 toyota dealers. >> all right. steven curtis, thank you so much. >> thank you so much. >> thanks for that initiative. and now we'll go back inside to matt. >> al, thank you very much. this is cool, stephen king set to chill up your spine with works like "the shining," gave us hope with "the shawshank redemption," and his latest book, "revival" will have you breaking out in a sweat with questions about faith, god and what lies beyond death. stephen king, always good to have you here. welcome. >> thank you. it's good to be here. >> let's talk about reverend jacobs, okay? he's a guy who has lost faith in religion, he's turned his back on god because of a tragedy in his life involving his family. he takes to the pulpit. >> yeah. >> in his small town, and he delivers a scathing sermon on religion that goes as far as to compare it to an insurance scam. >> right. >> the zest with which you wrote that sermon makes me think you've been wanting to deliver it for a long time. >> well, i wouldn't say that i really wanted to deliver it for a long time, but i was interested in reverend jacobs as a guy with religious faith.

i was raised, you know, in a christian family, methodist. and i think people with a lot of faith have a lot further to fall. >> this guy, as i said, compares it to an insurance scam, says you pay in, you pay in, you believe, you believe, thinking that at the end there will be this great payoff, and you find out the company doesn't even exist. do you worry about offending people, or do these staunch stephen king supporters know where you lie on this? >> well, i'd like to think that people can make a differentiation between the character and the man who wrote the character, because i've written some pretty awful things in my time, and if they can't differentiate. i mean, hey, guys, i'm all right, you know? of course, i'd say that, wouldn't i? >> exactly. you'd fool us with that. let's talk about some big-ticket items you get into in the book, okay? faith and science, the existence of god. at this stage in your life, do you believe in god? >> i do. i made a decision to believe in god, because it's better to believe than not to believe.

i came to that conclusion when i realized that i had addiction problems that were bigger than i could solve myself. and so, it was easy to say, well, if i've got a power greater than myself, okay, that's fine, i can use that to make life livable and good. >> beyond life, this idea of an after-life. i was reading an interview youd where you said you've developed a very agnostic view on the after a life, almost a neurological theory about why it may exist or why people might talk about it. >> well, i think that it might be that we are wired up in a certain way -- certain circuits open when you're dying and give you a lift. that seems to me that would be part of the organic survival mechanism. and that would explain this white light phenomenon that people have. as far as what's after, there's

no down side in believing that there's a heaven or an elisan feel, right? >> it's a win-win. >> it's a win-win situation. if there isn't, we're not going to know. >> do you fear death? >> i don't think i fear death so much as things like alzheimer's disease or advanced, you know, physical problems. >> you worry about the power of thinking, losing the power of thought and expressing yourself. >> yeah. and i've got to say that one of the things that drove this book is i'm curious as to what that -- this is the one experience that we all go through. they say that there's nothing in life that's sure, except death and taxes. but some people don't pay their taxes. so, the one thing is death. >> exactly. unfortunately. one of the other things you said -- >> and we probably have some on this show. >> probably. i've probably interviewed a few of them. you say you still feel fear of failure, which i find hard to believe after all the success you've had. i don't think you have to worry about it. i really don't. this book is called "revival."

♪ we are back now at 8:41 with a special "today's money." this morning on veterans day, financial advice to members of the military. service members and their families face unique circumstances, and "today" financial editor jean chatzky has written a new e-book for them published by nbc, called "operation money." jean, good morning. >> good morning. >> so glad you wrote this book. really, veterans have some very unique financial situations to deal with. >> they do. they move every two years in

many cases. they have spouses who are often out of the workforce. and so, this is meant to address their needs, their challenges. it's free at operationmoneybook.com, and it's the second time that nbc and citi have teamed up to do something like this, so we want to say thank you. >> it's really wonderful. we have service members on the plaza with questions for you in a moment. but first, you say start with creating a budget. we all hate the "b" word, budget. >> just call it a savings plan. the key is, you want to know what you have coming in, the bottom line number, what you have going out and where it's going. and we have a chart that basically shows you how your resources should be allocated. the housing number for the military families is the most important, because when you move, housing costs change wildly. if you can keep under that 35%, you'll be awesome. >> okay. and you've got debt 15%. you mean just be paying off your debt. >> exactly, and that doesn't include your car loan, by the way. >> okay. you also mention establishing good credit. this applies to all of us, but is it particularly important for members of the military? >> absolutely, because if you don't have decent credit, it can

keep you out of the military, it can cause havoc with your security clearances. it can be a really big problem. so, you want to maintain good credit. know your credit score. members of the military can get it for free at saveandinvest.org, which is a not-for-profit site. make sure you pay your bills on time, every time. only use 10% to 30% of the credit you have available to you and don't shop for credit when you don't need it. >> you also say don't close credit card accounts if you've had them a long time. some people think i don't use it i'm going to close it. >> keep it if the credit line is large and it's the one you've had longest in your wallet. >> let's go to the plaza for a couple questions i think teed up. take it away. >> hi. my husband's active duty right now. we're stationed up in saratoga springs, and we're wondering if we should buy at our next duty station and get the equity as opposed to renting. >> it's a really great question and i got it a lot as i was researching this book. generally, renting is going to make more sense, and it's because you're not going to be there for that long. unless you know you're there for five years or more, you're much

so, most people, at least in our survey, are side sleepers. i think you said you're a slide sleeper, right? >> i'm a side sleeper, so i guess i'm in the majority. tamron, thank you. dr. shelby harris is the director of behavioral sleep medicine. thanks for being here. >> thank for having me. >> why is sleep position so important? >> well, if you're making enough time to sleep at night, you want to make sure the quality of sleep is ideal, so we're well rested and refreshed in the day. so that's an easy thing to fix so you can feel better in the morning. >> for back sleepers, a lot of people just sleep on their backs, but it's generally not a very good position for your body to sleep in, right? >> well, for some people. actually, the most neutral position for your back is actually to be on your back, sleeping that way. but you want to make sure you have a nice pillow like this that's propping you up a little bit. if you have too many pillows and you can only sleep really propped up and you snore a lot, you might want to see a sleep specialist, because it can be a sign of sleep apnea. >> some people have apnea, so what are some ways to fix that? >> the best way to treat apnea

is something called a pap therapy, which is a mask that you put on that helps keep your airway open at night. there are other treatment, weight loss. some people it's positional, so finding another position could help. >> for people who do want to sleep on their backs, we brought in montez. come on in and help us out here. you're going to show us different ways that you can get a better way of sleeping on your back. >> for your back, actually, montez is going to be wearing things to try and train yourself. if you snore a lot or if you're pregnant, you actually shouldn't be sleeping on your back. so, montez has things to help train you to sleep on your side. >> side, okay. >> if you do want to sleep on your back, just note, a big fluffy pillow and another pillow under your knees can be helpful to help with your back, but if you can't be sleeping on your back, this is what you should be doing. as you can see, montez has a pocket on backwards. so, we're going to put a tennis ball in it. he's also wearing a fanny pack, and you don't have to do both.
