land a spacecraft on a speeding comet. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. space is the place to think big. they are doing that here. this comet, 2.5 miles wide has taken almost a decade to reach and it is tense right now. the lander has detached as we speak, it is in three full on the way to the comet. will it land safely? >> cheers erupting in the control room after flawless separation from the space craft. the first ever attempt to land on the surface after comet. a computer glitch briefly cutting communication threatening the mission. it is now on schedule to touch down on the comet in a few hours' time. the purpose, to learn more about the solar system formed over 4 billion years ago, the lander will gather gases, chemicals,

and other properties from the comet. the rosetta space craft has been chasing the kplet for ten years millions of miles from earth. the trickiest part, well, how do you get the lander to land with little gravity? without full knowledge of what the inhospitable surfaces will be like and no control over where the spacecraft makes contact with the ground. if it goes according to plan the landing will look something like this. a daring feat revealing more secrets of the solar system, it could even explain the origin of life on earth. and we are hearing that the lander has begun to send back signals but they need to get this right, guys, it cost a billion dollars to build and some of the evidence that it might find might help with the dooms day scenario where a comet is directing toward earth. >> incredibly ambitious. thank you very much.

>> what people dream up. with the apollo program and all that, fascinating stuff. >> that bruce willis is riding that thing is cool. >> bringing us down to earth. >> meantime, if you live on the east coast you should enjoy today's weather. the polar vortex is sweeping across the country. it's going to cause temperatures to plunge. dylan dreyer made her way to denver as she continues her frigid road trip. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. so much for that old wive's tale that it's too cold to snow because i can assure you it is really, really cold here and it is snowing. winter weather advisories are in effect for the heavier snow we're going to see. but the bigger story is the frigid cold. look at the steam coming off this lake behind me here in washington park. i know that the water is not as cold as the 3 degrees it is out here now and that warm air rises and we end up with steam. this is all part of this bigger storm system, this arctic air mass that is responsible for

producing about two feet of snow in parts of michigan. we ended up with a foot, foot and a half in montana and wisconsin. it also brought some very gusty winds to washington state and oregon where downed trees and power lines and tens of thousands of people are without power right now. the biggest thing i noticed was the temperature drop. we went from record high temperatures in wichita, kansas, and down through dalhart texas and got up to 32 the next day. so it's cold and here in denver we are looking at temperatures for highs today to be about 50 degrees below average. we'll only top out around 5 or 6 later this afternoon. by the time we get to friday we'll warm up here but al, that's when this cold is headed to your neck of the woods. >> sadly, unfortunately, i think dylan is going to be on the road for a while because we're not going to see a break in this arctic express. it's going to continue moving in. as you look at these temperatures right now 5 in

casper, 19 in north platte, currently cleveland at 40, nashville 50. that's 11 gles below average. and then tomorrow morning kansas city 19, new orleans 50. dallas at 29 degrees, that's 18 degrees above average. high temperatures not much bet e from 20 to 50 degrees below average. and then early friday morning it continues. we're going to look at 29 degrees for a low in atlanta, the high in atlanta only 48. chicago, 33. that's 16 degrees below average. plus, coming up in the next half hour we're 2ing to talk about the lake-effect snow machine cranking up a foot of snow or more, heading into the great lakes. and there's another lobe of the polar express coming in next week. we got a lot to talk about on #rokerthon. >> going to be up all night. conserve your energy. another story we're following the former navy s.e.a.l. who claims he is the one that fired the final shot into osama bin

laden, sharing information about this operation. peter alexander is on the story this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. 3 1/2 years after bin laden's death and americans are fascinated by the secret mission that killed him as well as the warriors involved in that raid. that includes rob o'neill describing an unprecedented detail his central role in the death of the man ninld 9/11. >> standing two feet in front of me with his hands on his wife, was the face i've seen on a thousand times. my first thought was we got him. we got him. we just ended the war. >> speaking out for the first time to fox news, rob o'neill t former s.e.a.l. team 6 sniper who says he fired the fatal shot, killing the world's most wanted terrorist. the montana native traveling giving paid motivational speeches described months of preparation for the raid. >> the more we trained on it the more we realized this is going

to be a one-way mission. we're going to go in and not come back. we're going to die when the house blows up, we're going to die when he blows up or we're going to be there too long and get arrested by the pakistanis and spend the rest of our short lives in prison. it's worth it to kill him because he will die wisconsin. >> reporter: o'neill's decision to go public is not without controversy. the department of justice is investigating former s.e.a.l. matt bissonette who wrote a bestseller about shooting bin laden without clearing the book with the government. last month the s.e.a.l.'s commander fired off a stern letter reminding all s.e.a.l.s of the code of secrecy. i do not advertise the nature of my work nor seek recognition. bissonette told nbc news there are inconsistencies about who is allowed to talk and who isn't. noting the pentagon helped hollywood re-create the raid for "zero dark thirty." >> everybody and their brother was talking about this.

how can you be holding it against me. >> reporter: o'neill says months passed before it sunk in that he shot osama bin laden. >> i thought about it every day. for a number of years. i'm still trying to figure out if it's the best thing i've done or the worst. >> bissonette. still this entire episode royaled the navy s.e.a.l. community. a former s.e.a.l. who knows both he considered their breaking the code of secrecy in his words dishonorable but other former s.e.a.l.s insist the higher ups created this where it's okay for some to speak out but not for others. >> peter alexander, thank you so much. by the way we're going to talk to robert o'neill on friday. >> natalie's here now with overnight news on the president's trip to asia. >> good morning everyone. president obama and china's president downplaying points of tensions. the two addressed reporters in a rare joint news conference.

kristen welker joins us. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning. the two leaders announced a major deal on climate change for the first time china vowing to cap its carbon emissions, all part of an intent to show a deeper level of cooperation between the u.s. and china. at a news conference it's clear stark differences remain. it's been three days of one-on-one time between president obama and president zee shink ping. during a press conference overnight a reminder that two world powers do things differently. it started with a question from the new york times, the reporter asking why some journalists are still denied visas to work in china. >> isn't it time to extend that sort of right to foreign correspondents who seek to cover your country? >> reporter: a question president xi seemed to dismiss, prompting this knowing look from

president obama. then, after answering a question from a chinese reporter, president xi finally addressed the question and seemed to blame the media for any lack of access. >> media outlets need obey china's laws and regulations. >> reporter: it's just one of several unforgettable moments during the three-day summit where earlier russian president putin was accused of being too friendly to president xi's wife when he draped a shawl over her shoulders and some called president obama rude for chewing gum that the lavish welcome ceremony. now, all of this as president obama has gotten harsh criticism in the chinese media with some questioning hisower in the wake of the bruising midterm defeat that he suffered. president obama has brushed that criticism aside, his next stop is myanmar. >> thank you, kristin.

financial regulators fined five banks more than $3 billion for trying to manipulate foreign exchange markets. kayla tauschies that details. good morning. >> good morning. the banks pay regulators $3.3 billion, partly settling claims dozens of traders tried to swing certain exchange rates in their favor. the value of the dlal when outside the u.s. is set each day when currencies change hands on wall street authorities found for five year this is group may have had an undue effect. jpmorgan chase, citigroup and three european banks agreed to the deal but possible criminal charges from justice department are yet to come. >> thanks so much. a rescue in dallas on tuesday after a city worker had a medical emergency and drove into a creek. two of the man's colleagues and a few other witnesses rushed in to help and here you can see one

not often news about diets make this is portion of our show but if you've just start add new diet plan listen up. a new study out this morning finds some of the most popular plans come up short when it comes to long term results. nbc's stephanie gosk is here with the latest. good morning to you. >> good morning. good news and bad news with this study. four popular diets, atkins, zone, weight watchers and south beach help people lose some weight. the bad news, it's probably not going to stay off. americans spend $66 billion a year trying to beat the bulge. everyone searching for the silver bullet. doctors compared existing research on four of the most popular diet plan, atkins, the zone, weight watchers, and south beach. finding all four modestly successful in the first year, but these benefits are not sustained long term. among the four diets there was insufficient proof that one plan was better than another.

and the impact on heart disease and risk factors like high cholesterol is unclear. >> basically says all of the claims about one diet versus the another diet and everybody says they are the best, there's no there there. there are no did ta >> in a statement a nutritionist for atkins says diet dues work. the key is find one to sustain. >> dr. sears invented the zone. you need to pick a way and stick to the. weight watchers which showed a short-term edge maintains it's a proven program backed by decades of research. so where does all of this lead the silver bullet? just as elusive as ever. >> we need to grow up about weight and health and recognize like everything else, that if you want to get there from here it actually involves time and patience and effort. >> in the end, the authors of the study say the real solution may be found in broad overall lifestyle changes.

responding on the company website saying all the talk swirling around late about how spotify is making money on the backs of artists upsets me big time. refuting claims that spotify is giving music away, he says its paid more than $2 willion to lablts and societies for distributions to stong writers and recording artists. >> his point is if people don't get on spotify they might be taking it for free. is it $2 billion better than nothing. and of course it is. ♪ >> swift said she doesn't want her name attached to what she calls a grand experiment telling yahoo! i don't agree with per pet waiting the perception that music has no value and should be free. spotify has 50 million users, 12.5 million paying subscribers and big stars like swift he says can make up to $6 million a year off of the service.

national correspondent kate snow is joining us. >> good morning, savannah. sources close to the williams family say they'll never know exactly what led robin williams to take his own life but the autopsy does reveal new clues like 70 or 80% of parkinson's patients, williams also had a form of dementia. on screen, he was a comic live wire. but new details in robin williams' autopsy reveal the oscar-winning actor was dealing with several different types of abnormal changes in the brain when he took his own life this summer. the main conclusion in the coroner's report, findings in this case support the diagnosis of diffuse lewy body demeademen. nothing in the report was surprising to them. it all seemed to fit with what they vofbed. >> memory problems, movement problems like parkinson's features, slowness, stiffness, tremor, balance problems.

they can have visual hallucinations. >> reporter: those hallucinations can be frightening and can cause people to act out. the doctor also says it's not uncommon for lewy body dementia to make depression worse. >> for people who suffer from both depression and did hementia, it can make the symptoms worse. >> reporter: steven pearl had known williams since 1979 and saw him a month before he died. >> something was wrong. you could tell. he lost weight. he looked a bit frail. you could tell something wasn't right and he wasn't all there. >> reporter: lewy body dementia is the second common most form after alzheimer's, affecting 1.3 million americans. a book about caring for her husband, ralph. >> he always knew everybody but he didn't always know me and he would look at me and say, where did ann go? she was here a moment ago. >> i'm casey casem.

outset. this is not about women who are anticipating any difficulty with their fertility, right? there are a lot of families who have premature ovarian failure. for them it's an amazing technology. this is separate. this is talking about women in their 20s who are being exposed to this technology as a potential viable option to preserve their fertility. >> do the reality check. number one, how successful is it? does it give people a false assurance that they will, if they freeze their eggs, be able to put off child bearing? >> that, of course, is probably a philosophical and ethical issue. it's very expensive. not all insurances will obviously cover it. there are some risks involved. the issue is this. if you preserve, if you freeze an egg in your 20s, that egg is actually healthier than a

police say the victim and two other friends were on the way to a nearby park. police have still not located the driver. and history made in space, a tiny lander has landed successfully on the surface of a comet some 300 million miles from earth. the european space agency made the announcement about an hour ago. the lander is now sending data about the comet back to the rosetta spacecraft that launched it, then being sent back to earth. scientists here will dig into it, find out what we have. after this break, a look at weather and traffic. we'll be right back.
