arctic blast, whatever you want to call it, is not going anywhere any time soon, but could linger until the middle of next week. in denver, the arctic blast crushed a record set 98 years ago. fearing for those with nowhere to go, volunteers hit the streets looking to bring people in from the bone chilling cold. >> we can't force anybody off the streets, just offer help. >> reporter: the punishing system rare for mid-november dumped snow and then ushered in the deep freeze. as the misery spread, some watched temperatures plunge from the 70s and 80s to the 30 s and 40s in less than 24 hours. at the university of mipz, workers braved the cold to clear snow on the field and from 10,000 feet, ahead of a game scheduled for saturday. that familiar scrape heard in so many communities, but rarely so soon. in oregon, trees litter roads

quoted what is said in a source close to bono saying he's extremely lucky the plane could have gone down. ♪ >> the private jet was flying between 50 and 20,000 feet according to aviation officials when the tailgate fell off the plane. this leer jet 60 en route from dublin to berlin. this is bono in germany hours after the incident looking unshaken. but he and four friends on board reportedly heard a big thud during the two hour trip realizing after landing that the door had gone and luggage fell out. the front man whose hits include "elevation" and "vertigo" and performed on a rooftop is famously jet set, here arriving

that spacecraft that landed on a comet traveling at 885,000 mile per hour, a mission ten years in the making, but this morning, there's questions about it. we are live at the european space agency in germany this morning. kat katie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is a really big deal, likening it to the space walk, but this is millions of miles away deep into space, and although they are considering it a success, it did not go entirely as plan ned. overnight jubilation after a space frontier was smashed quickly turned to concentration as they crunched data to see if their washing machine sized space probe managed to hang on. >> jump twice. so it touched down. lifted off again. stayed flying, basically, for a long time, about two hours. then it touched down again. >> reporter: comet 67p is 300

million miles away, deep in space, just landing on it, even for a moment, made history. to land twice, they are now saying is double history. it's been a long journey, a decade of chasing across 4 billion miles of space to find a piece of icy rock barely wider than the islands of manhattan, all to solve mankind's biggest puzzle. how did we get here? are we alone? >> now, we are a water planet. where did our water come from? one of the ideas that's been around is the water came from outer space through comets. >> reporter: this morning, teams are analyzing the initial information and the first photo from the lander as it rides 67p, how long it stays on is unknown as the landers harpoons, which were supposed to anchor it down did not fire. still, the mission is hailed as a success. for our greatest mind, a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn

center, craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning, look up there, on the 69th floor, that's where the high-rise window washers were suspended for more than an hour and a half as onlookers gathered at the ground, folks watched on tv and online, and everyone holding their breaths. dangling and trapped from the tallest building in the western hemisphere, two window washers stranded after a cable snapped on the top of the one world trade center, leaving them stuck and scared in app almost vertical position. the man identified is juan lopez, seen hours before in pictures posted on social media. more than a hundred new york city firefighters rushed to the scene. want department tweeting a photo from inside, up close look at the terrifying view. from the top floor, rescue workers lowered additional safety harnnesses and two-way

close to making a final decision on what executive action he will take on immigration. some wanted to halt deportations for millions of illegal immigrants who came to the countras children. house speaker boehner says if the president goes at it alone, he'll kill chance of major legislation passing. the house could vote today on a bill that builds the controversial keystone oil pipeline, but if it makes it to president obama's desk, white house advisers may recommend a veto. it's been stalled for six years over environmental concerns. a disturbing incident involving u.s. navy sailors is caught on camera. the video shows three sailors from the uss ross docked in instan bull. the americans there in american clothing, surrounded by a dozen activists calling them killers and shouting at them to leave turkey and put a bag over one of their heads. the americans did not fight back. they managed to get away safely and told the activists are part of a fringe group and that

turkey's generally hospitable to westerners. rattled nerves in kansas and oklahoma wednesday after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake centers 25 miles southwest of wichita. only minor damage reported. the quake in an area where the oil and gas industry uses fracking. officials are trying to determine if that is behind a recent increase in activity there. and call it an accident waiting to happen. surveillance cameras caught a florida man trying to steal a chain saw by stuffing it into his pants. >> what could go wrong? >> it was worth $600, got away initially, and he was caught, though, after a foot chase. i think -- >> there are a hundred punch lines. >> good thing al's not here right now. i don't think he could resist.

side-by-side on the stage every night. >> this show is spectacular. just for people who aren't familiar with "love letters." it is very much about love letters, two people wrote the first letter when they were 7-years-old. >> something leak that. what's interesting, in spite of the title "love letters," it's not goy and sentimental. it's very tough sometimes and very funny and there are only one or two actual love letters in the play. the rest of it is these two people trying to find each other. they're out of sync all the time. >> what was it like to try and come up with the rhythm with alan? i mean, obviously, he's a great actor. you are a great actress. does it come naturally or did you have to work at it? >> well, i was reading these letters, as an actor, you are deprived of all of your familiar territory. you can't look the other actor in the eye. you have your stationary for the entire play. so you are more focused on that and finding the specifics of the

letters. >> the difficulty, i agree, with candy, the difficult is relating to the other person without looking at them, which is something odd for an actor, because we get a lot out of the other person's face. >> let's talk about broadway. every time an actor/actress come they have been on broadway, they say it's different from any other acting experience. is that true? do you feel that way? >> well, he's a broadway vet. i -- >> you were on broadway in 2012, weren't you? >> yeah, that's almost the only other time. what i find so strike about broadway is everyone that does it does it for the love of the work. because you can't really make a living doing it. and people who are there are there because they want to be. so there is a real seriousness of purpose and focus and the performance, everyone does their best. well, in our case, it's only two of us. >> most of us do our best. >> yeah. >> you were there in 2005 last

time, with glen ross. when you are on broadway, i understand the schedule is, it takes everything. >> you know what's interesting about it. you think the show is only two hours a night. so they have it easy. from the minute you wake up, you are thinking, did i get enough sleep for tonight? is my voice in shape? am i getting sick? when do i eat? you know, i don't eat right before the show. then your friends come, you have to go out and eat spaghetti afterwards. >> you can't wind down. you both have something in common, in your careers have created iconic characters for television, murphy brown and hawkeye pierce, are characters like this something you look at always as a gift? >> oh, i do. i loved playing murphy. she was a fantastic character and just always fun to play for ten years. >> do you always look for the next one? do you always think, can i get a

can i tell the quality isn't as good. you don't sleep as deeply because you don't want to take a chance on missing a run. >> reporter: but it's not just the alarms keeping the firefighters up at night. >> i senator very loudly. >> i was a very heavy snoreer. the guys hatet it. overtime they told me you stopped breathing a great deal throughout the night. >> reporter: both sax sachs and sheperd were diagnosed with sleep apnea. brigham women's study studied several firefighters including a station in columbus and found 37% screened positive for sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, shift work disorder and restless leg syndrome. >> we found the firefighters and paramedic itself screened positive for sleep disorder had

twice as many motor vehicle crashes. >> i would wake up at 3:00 in the morning, within 20 second i could be driving a 72,000 pound fire truck down the road. i feed to have my faculties about me. >> reporter: there are health issues, hypertension, heart disease, mood and memory problems. for the firefighters in the study there was an increased risk. >> there was more than a 150% increase in cardio vasc loor disease and 200% increase in depression, diabetes. >> we expect a lot from firefighters. it's difficult for them to get adequate amounts of sleep. we hope the results will lead fire departments to institute screening for sleep disorders. >> reporter: the firefighters have taken steps, they wear machines that help you breathe more easily and watch diet and exercise to improve their health. but sleep is a luxury when you

are on call. >> i don't think we'll get back to a sleep schedule until we retire. you just get used to what the schedule's like. >> in a job such as firefighters or e.r. doctors or air traffic controllers, where you are working long overnight hours that may affect when you sleep, to do everything you can to maximize the quality of your sleep. >> so how do you find out if you have sleep apnea? each of us on the show has taken some sort of sleep test this week. i tried the portable sleep lab to study whether i suffered from it. here to explain the results, dr. karl brazil, director at the division of epilepsy college of physicians and surgeons. good morning. >> good morning. >> as you mentioned, 18 million people suffer from sleep apnea. i use this portable sleep lab machine to test what my results would be. what does this device do and what is it looking for? >> it's a pretty simple device. it measures your breatheing and

effort of breathing, measures your heart rate. >> let's look at natalie's results. i'm curious apt this first one, settle this first and for all. >> natalie is on the top, perfectly level. someone with the buzzes are snores. so it shows this person snores. not everybody that has sleep apnea that one does. >> natalie does not. we got that. >> the results of her test on the breathing. >> her breathing is very, very regular, few look at the top line. on the bottom this person is stopping every 30 to 40 second, complete cessation of the breathing. so that's a problem. >> chest movement is another indicator as well. >> yours is very regular. with a person with sleep apnea, the movement continues that, shows you it's obstructive. the cleft is expanding, the person is trying to breathe. >> not to mention the heart beat.

>> again, if you look at natalie, very level. as your breathing stops, it's hard to see on that graphic, your heart rate can drop and go up and down a lot. which is a big straven on your heart, big fluctuations in health concerns. >> we have a recording of somebody who had sleep apnea. you can hear their breathing and the pattern. and the snoring. so if you can, what are the symptoms and the best ways to be able to tell if you, obviously, if you snore like that, i think. >> if you snore like that, then it stops, that's sleep apnea. not everybody makes noise. that's not 100%. if you wake up tired, that's a sign. if you wake up with a headache, that's a sign. if you are overweight, you are more likely to have it. >> real quick. treatment, the machines, we saw the guys at the the fire house using those. >> it keeps your airway opened when you are asleep. it's usually the best treatment.
