in, the nafs. >> 23. in -- the decision comes on the heels of the 36-year sentence given to the captain of that south korean ferry that sank back in april, killing more than 300 people. many of them school children. the boat capsized while making a turn. it was later discovered the vessel was defective, carrying twice as much cargo as legally allowed.

through both saturday and sunday all across the board. so make those outdoor plans. as we get into next week, everything changes. and that's what we're going to be talking about coming up in just a little bit. buts you can imagine, there's some fog, it's a friday. what is going on on the roadways is the question. is that light cancelling out the fog? >> well, we have some illiteration, foggy friday out there. let's start with southbound 880. i want to show you the jam from the coliseum all the way down top of the screen there the flashing lights are gone. there are some flashing lights in the distance between us and the original crash scene. there were a couple of fender benders. the jam from high street past the coliseum all the way to davis. the southbound side moves much more smoothly and the slowdown

coming from 238 unto the scene. both directions getting in towards san leandro. international boulevard also moving smoothly through the area but those are surface streets. so a lighter, slower traffic there. that orange painted across the north bay, that's what i wanted to show you. this is where christina is talking about, the fog being an issue, petaluma, coming into novato. san rafael a clear, easy drive. the rest of your drive smoother. 85, 87, typical pattern. lighter flow for a friday. westbound across the san mateo bridge. on the hayward side we see an easy drive. you see the low clouds and haze but tu still make out the outline of the high rise and span is fine.

you're watching "today in the bay." >> it is 6:39 right now. doctors at a nebraska hospital preparing to receive another ebola patient this weekend. the surgeon is from the u.s. but has been working in sierra leone and recently tested positive for ebola. if he's stable enough to be flown, he'll go to nebraska for treatment. >> and this will be second open enrollment for covered california. most other states use healthcare.gov. last year's rollout was not exactly smooth, but this time around health officials say the process is much more user friendly. also the site has undergone five weeks of testing compared to just ten case last year. the proof of course will be in the pudding.

the company adding this would hurt passengers by taking away flight options. in fact, asiana does say it sells about 170,000 tickets a year for flights to san

bridge which you can see from top to bottom, both towers. it is so clear and he's able to do so, lean back, lean back, get that angle just perfect, buddy. as we head throughout the day today, we are going to see this fog burn off quickly. this little bank of loaf clouds is right over that golden gate bridge. kind of cool how we have all the perspectives coming together here in the bay area. this is healdsberg this morning. about a quarter of a mile of visibility there and half a mile of visibility in places throughout the tri-valley as well. we'll see a nice mild finish to the day, comfortable conditions, mid 60s for today on the peninsula. you'llnd up in the mid 60s on the east shore. starting to get a really pretty

sunrise in the bay area. now, as we get into your weekend, saturday and sunday looking spectacular for your outdoor plans and i got to tell you, things are going to change rapidly. you want to enjoy this weekend if you're trying to get outdoors. it looks like next weekend we've got rain on the way. there's a big event happening in castro valley. this is really, really cool. it's the castro valley electric light parade. you decorate your car and it's going to be a lot of fun between 3:00 and 8:00. hey, maybe you've always wanted to be in a parade, do a little bit of this, now is your opportunity. temperatures staying comfortable, looks good. look at what's starting to shape up at that point. the atmospheric river. then i take you into your tuesday. showers starting up for us at

alternate. because it's friday we have a lighter flow of traffic there. south bay your northbound route is really starting to kick in now. a lighter flow overall. still, that slower pattern will give you a live look out to the dublin camera. now we have the haze but visibility for the drivers on the deck no problems out of the altamont. san jose we showed you that earlier issue northbound 101, we have the build 680 in toward the airport. and the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights have been turned on. fastrak an advantage here. and north bay, there's nothing anywhere north of novato, santa rosa. watch it there. >> this morning a bay area teen-ager could learn his

punishment for setting another teen-ager's skirt on fire on board a transit bus. bob, this story really garnered a lot of attention, even national. >> reporter: it was initially being crime bill charged at a hate crime. but that was before the plea agreement that is supposed to be put forth this morning in court, just around two hours from now when an almeiameda superior cou judge made a plea agreement. fleischman, who was 18 at the time does not identify as a man or woman. because of that thompson had also faced hate crime and aggravated mayhem charges, which could have carried a life

sentence but, again, had those charges dropped by pleading out. just before thomas turns 18 in july of next year, a judge will be able to modify his sentence from five years down to seven, if he has behaved well while in prison. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we could hear from the dublin police officer accused of stealing multiple pictures from dui suspects. he admitted taking explicit photos from the phones of up to six women he arrested and shared them with other officers. he could serve more than three years behind bars if he is convicted of that crime. meantime, investigators in the south bay are looking into -- we're actually going to move ahead to a story. we're going to check in, south bay, very disturbing incident of

child pornography, we'll get to that later in the show. >> 26-year-old daniel ha disappeared halloween night. his family called off the search after a body was found in the bay near alcatraz on tuesday. although the medical examiner has not confirmed the identity, his family thinks it's him based on items found in his pockets. a service will be held at st. lutheran's church in san francisco. >> oil prices continue to plunge. there's really no nend in sight. >> scott mcgrew, good news for drivers and airlines. >> that's right. the i.e.a. report just released says the rout has yet to run its course, their words.

good news for airlines. virgin america will start trading on the nasdaq last night. even some frequent flyers, match that as a frequent flyer award. now, the nasdaq is encouraging passengers on the plane to tweet out their pictures. looks like these pictures are actually drinking water and the nasdaq putting it out on the times square as well. virgin as not yet started trading. that's normal. we'll continue to watch for it. >> investigators notice south bay are trying to learn if a janitor now under arrest for child pornography had any contact with children while at work. kris sanchez is live with more on the story. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning. it does not appear the man arrested with a computer with more than 100 sexually explicit

images children, when he was arrested, he was at a place where he did not. he was arrested at a business where he was a janitor. police are quick to say he was not working at a school when he was arrested. his bail is set at $25,000. san jose spokesman morales says the task force investigators tracked down the child porn on line to that laptop that perez had on his person. experts say that some predators reach out to children, encourage them to perform acts and then put them on the web. investigators are looking into whether that was the case with perez. they also wanted to know if he had personal contact with any of the children in those videos. >> these things are sometimes really complicated to determine

who these children are, whether they're even residents of our city, whether this information was local. it was conducted via the internet so these children could be citizens here, citizens in another country. >> perez faces felony charges if they determine -- if investigators determine he did have contact with the children in the videos, those charges would escalate. once arraigned, he can post bail and walk free until his next court appearance. investigators with that task force of internet crimes against children, they have given information about how to talk to your children and you can find a link to that on our web site, nbcbayarea.com. >> and police are warning students and parents to be on alert for a suspicious person spotted near san mateo high.
