two weeks ago, basically. a cool weekend. >> yes. it was cold like this two weeks ago, warm and now back to cold. you mentioned, beautiful shot in san francisco this morning. here atop our cam you can see we are fog-free this morning. it will be sunny with very fallike conditions. not very warm. tomorrow it will warm up and become breezy with winds gusting across some higher elevations. we set the stage for rain. we are talking about more rain this upcoming week, possibly by wednesday into thursday. right now we take a look outside. from the south bay to the north bay. we are clear but chilly this morning. want to grab that jacket. plenty of sunshine. temperatures not too warm, not too hot. just right. >> just right. >> right in the middle. >> like goldilocks. >> yes. we'll talk about the rain chance coming up. >> thank you. we begin first with a nerve-racking experience for passengers on an alaska airlines

flight out of oakland international airport. the plane was on its way to seattle but pilots had to turn back because of a bird strike that damaged the plane. the 737 did land safely. passengers boarded a different plane and departed at midnight. this is a picture of one of the passengers took as the plane was turning around. that passenger says the pilot told them the bird strike completely disabled an instrument panel. more details now. bird strikes are fairly common. faa numbers show so far this year there have been at least 31 bird strikes at oakland international alone. last year in all of california, there were nearly 900. it is only fairly rare for bird strikes to actually cause damage to the plane. >> if you are hitting the road this weekend, a chp crackdown is in effect. it's not just for duy and distracted driving but officers are also looking for aggressive

drivers. speed resulting in aggressive driving plays a significant role in death or injury on california highways. in one year between 2011 and 2012 there were 26,000 speed-related collisions. that resulted in 264 deaths and 38,000 injuries. >> when you're out driving with the flow of traffic, they are easy to distinguish. people that weave in and out of traffic. >> the aggressive driving crackdown ends in december. >> construction on the bay bridge is under way once again. lanes on the western span are closed every night now for work as crews fix the joints. last month you may recall the job brought traffic to a crawl. this time around crews are closing fewer lanes and they are using quick-drying concrete. the work goes from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. every night except sundays for the next 2 1/2 months. three men who swore to uphold the law for the san mateo county sheriff's department are accused

of breaking it. they face felony charges of smuggling drugs and cell phones for inmates in exchange of money. the district attorney expects more arrests in this case. the men arrested are sheriff's deputy juan lopez, a 26-year veteran who actually ran for sheriff recently with corrections officer george ismael a 15-year veteran. the men were bringing in cell phones, illegal drugs and contraband to a criminal street gang member. >> one personnel had on his phone a picture of our gang member in the jail pod with the phone. >> there are allegations at this point so we are going to support the district attorney's office as much as possible and see how this investigation ends up. >> the three men accused are out on bail. if convicted, they could face eight to ten years in jail.

police have been on the case for a couple of weeks. yesterday they got their man. undercover officers arrested a man outside a peninsula high school. this man was arrested for harassing girls near san mateo high. he was booked on charges of child annoyance and lurking near a school. police say twice this month fong approached girls and the girls reported their encounters. police are looking for another person who last night tried to pay a night school student to leave with him. a reminder to keep your kids close as you shop after reports of a man lurking behind a 2-year-old girl at costco in south san francisco. police released this surveillance photo of the man. they say he walked behind the little girl in an aisle last saturday. according to officers, he patted her on her head and told her to "come over here." the mom was 15 feet away. the man ran away when the mom

noticed him. >> and this is the aftermath of an explosive gas station fire in morgan hill yesterday afternoon. a customer accidentally backed into the gas pump igniting the fire. witnesses say the flames shot 20 feet high. a former firefighter who happened to see the accident sprang into action, pulling the driver to safety with the help of a mechanic. >> i heard people yelling and i came out and saw a big fire. i ran over there to check it out. i see a guy in there. naturally, i wanted to help him. >> the driver wasn't hurt, just in shock. firefighters arrived within minutes and quickly put out the flames. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, cockroaches in kitchens and spoiled food served to fans in kansas city during the world series. the stomach-turning allegations against a concessions company that provides food at bay area venues. plus -- >> i'm just honestly happy to

welcome back. we are taking a live look outside. temperatures will be cool today, but a lovely fall day. a live look downtown san jose on this saturday morning. it should be a lovely day. anthony slaughter will be in in just a few minutes. >> an old part of downtown san jose has a new look. a unique small business is taking over, as well. people are flocking. today in the bay's peggy bunker has more on the pop-up project. >> it's interesting. it kind of looks out of place. >> reporter: it's not what we are used to seeing on the streets of downtown san jose. former shipping containers turned into mobile store fronts for the holidays. >> yeah. we are in the modified shipping

container we got from the port of oakland. >> reporter: when adam heard the city of san jose was looking at pop-up shops for the holiday season, he pitched the storage container idea. typy at just 160 square feet to the downtown association who loved it. he says it's a way to get retail into downtown. >> a lot of the square footages available are really high. if you are going to take a 3,000 square foot space, it may cost you $5,075 a month. as a small business, that is a risk to take. >> reporter: the city knows the lack of retail is a problem. this year they took action. >> this is the first time, brand-new program. we want to showcase the opportunities retail has downtown and there is no better time to do it during the holidays when downtown sees the most amount of visitors. >> reporter: one of the most popular shops the usuals says business has been great. >> we have a lot of people that

have come by and say finally, women's clothing and men's clothing. there is so much food and they want shopping options. now to two new york window washers who talked about this terrifying experience on wednesday. hook at that as they dangled over the 68th floor of the world trade center. this morning they say they are happy to be alive. both men say fear raced through them as one side of the scaffold dropped. they held on as firefighters cut through three layers of glass in order to rescue them. >> in the beginning it was panic and survival instinct. a few minutes after that, kind of clear your mind and try to get hold of the situation. >> believe it or not, one of the men says he is ready to head back to the scaffolding tomorrow. to a new claim that has san francisco giants' fans feeling sick. a food safety manager at kauffman stadium in kansas city

came forward after the world series, claiming serious health code violations. he said he saw cockroaches in kitchens and claims expired food was sold to fans. he said there was an ongoing problem at the stadium and he alerted management, but no one listened. >> i can't be the only one going out and finding these issues and doing this thing. i needed support, you know? that support never arrived. >> aeromark issued a statement saying food safety is a top priority. aramark served several of our local venues. much more ahead on "today in the bay." bay area crab fishermen get ready to lower their pots. how soon their catch could be in stores.

north carolina. >> you have to have a bowl of clam chowder and crab. you have to. always get a crab. >> you have to have it on your dinner table for the holidays. it's a northern california tradition, especially for thanksgiving. to serve turkey and crab. in fact, customers begin putting in orders as early as july. >> it's going to be a great thanksgiving. >> fishermen began loading up thousands of crab traps when the calendar turned november 15th, the official start of the local dungeoness crab season. it will be enough plentiful year. >> california crab is sweeter than the other crabs. we have more salt content in the water. >> fishermen and wholesale buyers agreed to $3 per pound early enough. it's unclear how much it will be for consumers when the crab hits the stores as early as saturday. crab lovers should enjoy the season now. the effect of california's drought season may show up in a

'tis the season. >> and the weekend forecast. >> and a latte to go with it this morning. let's start you off with a look at our skycam network. >> it is a cool morning. >> you can see atop san bruno we have a little bit of fog and clouds. overall, we will look at a sunny and fall-like today. pumpkin spice latte, one movie favorites. let's talk about the forecast for sunday. it will be warmer. by a few degrees. we'll get back into the 70s tomorrow. it will be breezy tomorrow with those winds offshore. then rain is set to return to the bay area by the middle part

of the upcoming week. let's take you outside. clear skies from the south bay to the peninsula, east shore and san francisco all clear right now. it is cold. look at that. 48 in the peninsula. 41 in the north bay. just a few minutes ago, the north bay was in the 30s. so yes, chilly this morning. temperatures will remain seasonal. we have a back door cold front that will slide through from the sierra. today will be dry. same for tomorrow. if you do traveling to lake tahoe, places like that, you will encounter snow action tomorrow. today it will be dry and winds will start to shift offshore as this high pressure to our south starts to move in coupled with that cold front. for today again, not going to be overly warm. comfortable. 68 in the south bay with plenty of sunshine. same for the peninsula. you'll be a tad cooler 67 there. morning fog burned off in san francisco. 66 degrees. north bay, east bay and tri-valley. looking at similar conditions.

mid to upper 60s with our warmest location being the north bay. yes, it is the holiday season. downtown ice rink in san jose opened yesterday. now we are looking at comfortable conditions if you're headed out there. it opens at noon and will stay open through the evening hours. temperatures in the low to mid 60s. we'll see plenty of sunshine, as well. if you're looking for other things to do the castro valley boulevard light parade. you can see we are going to look at temperatures in the 60s with clear skies in castro valley. those events are, that one at least, is free. downtown ice you can get there, with you you have to pay to get on the ice. >> you can see we've got lots of rain across the pacific. this is our storm system set to hit the bay area wednesday. wednesday morning the time frame will start to see a few showers. look at the oranges and yellows.

that will move through. then we clear out. look what happens to our north. the showery activity will stay in the north bay thursday and friday. for saturday, we'll be another system that comes in very close. this is something we'll keep an eye on for next weekend. if these systems pan out and we see the rainfall from each one of these three systems, we could be talking about several inches of rain by the end of this week. at least right now though, the first shot of rain will come through on wednesday. once we get through that system, we'll have a better idea of what's going to happen as we head towards next weekend. it will stay cool in the signatures and low 70s. below average and jacket weather as we head toward the next few days with that rain coming in towards wednesday. of course, it is the season for rain, pumpkin spice latte, ice skating. you couldn't ask for a better forecast than this. good news is we don't want rain every single day because we would be talking about flash flooding. rain sets the stage for a cooler

we are seeing it with the giants. it's a lot of fun being part of a winning tradition, but there is a south bay college with an even more incredible winning record. one man who should get all the credit wants none of it. here is garvin thomas with today's "bay area proud." >> the school is san jose city college. the sport is basketball. the man is the men's coach percy

carr. people are surprised to learn that growing up ins from know, coach carr didn't play basketball. you might be surprised to learn what he thinks of his incredible achievement. >> why are we walking? >> if you should find yourself in a position to congratulate coach percy carr on his lifetime of basketball success. >> 44, you're running too slow. >> i suggest doing it quickly. >> why are you walking over there? >> this is a man who believes in speed. >> today, today, today. let's go. >> speed, coach carr, thinks is one of the things that wins basketball games. >> hurry up. >> and who in their right mind would argue against him? in 39 years coaching basketball at san jose city college, coach carr has won more than 800 games, more than any other california community college coach ever.

>> we keep it simple. best way we keep it simple. >> for a man who dedicated his life to the sport of basketball, that must mean a whole lot or not. >> that? win? oh, no. never. that's -- no. that is not even close. i'm sorry. >> that answer was no, if you didn't catch it. coach carr says since his first year on the job at sjcc, it has not been about the wins on the court, but the ones in life his players achieve after they have left him. he's got a pretty good record there, too. >> the most thing i'm proud of is 97% of them graduated and graduated from a four-year school and have jobs and are men and now a family. this is a great opportunity

county jail. three of the accused men are out on bail. if convicted, they could face eight to ten years in jail. an explosion at a high school had students and teachers scrambling yesterday morning. the building was evacuated after a loud boom hit it around 8:30 inside an old photo lab. it happened as two maintenance workers turned back on the gas to a heating system that had just been repaired after it was damaged during the napa earthquake. >> the interior walls were blown apart. there were desks toppled over, interior walls blown out but no structural damage to the exterior of the building. >> it was in a building that wasn't being used because of the earthquake damage done to it. no students were there. those two employees did suffer serious injuries. a full investigation is under way. fran's zoo gets a harsh recommendation following last week's death of a baby gorilla. an experted hired to investigate

the accident will advise the zoo to tear down its holding enclosures and rebuild them from scratch. the 16-month-old was crushed to death by an automatic door. a redesign would include doors which automatically stop when they hit something. new this morning, president barack obama is joining the world leaders at the g-20 summit in australia. the leaders of the world's 20 largest economies are meeting to work out plans to save a sagging global economy. the group accounts for 80% of the world trade done and 85% of global economic production. climate change is also expected to be at the forefront of the agenda. other topics up for discussion at the two-day summit include the crisis in ukraine, the rise of isis militant groups in syria and iraq and the ebola outbreak in west africa. much more ahead on "today in the bay." the stars of the wwe invade the

welcome back. 7:39 the time. a look across san francisco. you can see just a thin layer of clouds drifting across the bay area. overall, we will see a sunny, fall-like day as temperatures only stay in the 60s across the entire bay. tomorrow will be a little bit warmer with a few 70s across the tri-valley and north bay. breezy tomorrow and monday, tuesday and wednesday we'll start to see that next storm system alive by wednesday is the day to watch for rain. right now as we look outside, i want to show you this because we have drizzle that has started to impact places. i don't think this is going to hold together to impact the north bay. if you are going to do traveling

to those places in the next two hours, you may run into a little bit of drizzle. plenty of sunshine through the south bay through the peninsula. east shore and san francisco, everybody looking at clear skies. just a few high, thin clouds. overall, it is chilly. it's not going to be overly warm. it's going to stay chilly. 68 for the south bay today. san francisco struggling to get near 70. our warm spot will be the north bay 71. this is going to come in. it's called a back door cold front. it's coming in the back door from the opposite direction that we are used to seeing our systems come through. this one is going to move through the sierra tomorrow. if you're doing any traveling to lake tahoe tomorrow, keep in mind you could run into snow flakes. not a huge deal. only expecting a couple of inches. it is going to stay dry all weekend long. high thin clouds will drift

across the bay. that will set the stage for morning fog tomorrow. overall, i don't think we'll look at anything as far as rainfall a cross the bay area this week. comfortable in the peninsula with plenty of sun. 67 there. that morning fog will burn off from san francisco. 66 for your high there. east bay, north bay and tri-valley, expecting the same thing. temperatures today fall-like, below average. 68 for the tri-valley and 66 for the east shore. let's skip ahead to show you this rainive a i been talking about. across the pacific, very active now as we head towards tuesday and wednesday, skies will become cloudy. wednesday morning we'll see a few light showers from santa rosa down into san jose. you'll notice that yellow/orange/red, that's thunderstorm activity. will clear out for thursday. that rainy activity will stay with us in the north bay thursday and friday. look what happens north next week. we'll be looking at another shot of rainfall. if all these computer models do

hold together and play out the way they've been playing out over the past week or so, we could be looking at rain for wednesday, friday and again for saturday. this is again just depending on if these computer models will bring this rain through. first thing we know, we'll see showers for wednesday. once we get through that system, we'll have a better idea of what's headed our way friday and for this upcoming weekend. good news, we are seeing the systems line up and they are moving this way. that's good news. we are not talking about overly hot weather and our fire danger in the 60s and 70s. the rain moves in wednesday. not a bad forecast. if you've got the weekend off, do some hiking, get outside and enjoy san jose downtown ice rink. head over to the castro valley parade of life. you can head to nbcbayarea.com for that. ferguson, missouri, is

awaiting that grand jury decision whether to charge officer darren wilson in the death of teenager michael brown. there is a new dramatic account of what happened revealed in police records obtained by the local newspaper the st. louis "post dismatch." >> according to the st. louis "post dismatch" that is officer darren wilson in the white t-shirt leaving a station, heading to a hospital two hours after shooting and killing michael brown. police have not disclosed the extent of wilson's injuries. they say brown physically assaulted the officer. another clip shows wilson returning to the station two hours later. earlier that day ferguson police were tracking a robbery suspect near a gas station. >> 25, it's going to be a black male in white t-shirt. he's running quick. >> wilson's voice is heard asking whether officers need his help. wilson reports his location.

21, put me on canfield with two. >> it's 12:02 p.m. and the officer has stopped brown and a friend. now a grand jury is trying to figure out what happened next. police say brown assaulted wilson, tried to get the officer's gun. the officer opened fire killing brown. some witnesses say the teenager had his hands up surrendering. minutes later, according to the "post dispatch" an officer at the scene with a woman's voice in the background calls for help. >> that was ron allen reporting for nbc. much more ahead on "today in the bay." >>ing they were following me, wanting to kill me. i didn't want to die. >> then they fled violent gangs and death squads. we investigate the dire situation forcing some children to travel alone to the bay area.

traveling between the mexican border and the bay area joining immigrants on buses headed for destinations all over the country, including here. along the way, we also discovered something we did not expect to find, something about many of these refugees that startled even us. the large numbers may have dwindled in the last few months, but the lines of refugees making their way to local bus stations have not stopped here in tucson, arizona. we watched as day after day mothers and infants, fathers and young children were dropped off at the local bus station. they all were fleeing violent gangs and death squads in guatemala, honduras and el salvador. they were traveling to far-off places like atlanta, new jersey, los angeles and eureka, northern

california. along the way, we discovered an unexpected group of refugees. among them, this refugee from guatemala who fears for his life even now. that's why we won't show you his face. >> translator: i got out of guatemala because of problems with the gangs. they were following me, wanting to kill me. i didn't want to die. i wanted to save my life. >> reporter: the gangs in guatemala came for jaime when he was 12. shortly after that, he fled for his life leaving his mother, his home, his country. >> translator: if i return to guatemala, for sure death will be waiting for me. >> reporter: jaime is in school and hiding, hiding in plain sight among us here in the bay area. except for a distant relative whom he barely knows, he is alone.

jaime is 14. >> reporter: was it worth it to come here? >> translator: if i didn't have this now, i would be dead today. >> translator: i couldn't be there any more so i came alone. >> reporter: this girl whom we will call dariana fled honduras after gangs told her she must become a prostitute and work for them. >> translator: there are some that look at little girls, spy on them to kidnap them and rape them. that's what they do over there. they sequester them, rape them, they prostitute them out. if not, they just kill them. they are everywhere. >> reporter: she was 13. >> translator: i feel so bad. i was alone and had no one until i got to the detention center. i didn't get to talk to my mother. i didn't know how she was. >> reporter: these children are not alone. according to the u.s. border

patrol, almost 52,000 unaccompanied children from guatemala, honduras and el salvador have been picked up through september 30th of this year. that does not count children coming here with parents. it's just children traveling alone, a number that has more than doubled, up 149% from last year. >> there is a deportation proceeding that has commenced against illegal migrants, including children. >> reporter: earlier this year on "meet the press" homeland security secretary jeh johnson insisting federal law would be followed, admitted these refugee children pose a unique challenge to immigration policy in its current form. >> we are looking at ways to create additional options for dealing with the children in particular consistent with our laws and values. >> reporter: two walk-in refugees each day come here to the sanctuary in berkeley where

sister maureen serves as executive director. >> many of the children know their parents are here somewhere and they are looking for them. >> reporter: supported by several local churches, they have given legal help to at least 65 unaccompanied minors since june. >> crisis for them because if they don't have legal representation, they will probably be deported. >> the idea of welcoming refugees, welcoming strangers is part of who we are. >> reporter: reverend daniel is a pathor in one of the local churches that supports east bay sanctuary. >> i get frustrated when i hear people suggesting that children risking their lives to come here, 12 years old, 8 years old, whatever, these people, to say these people are some sort of threat to the united states, that frustrates me. >> translator: they said if you join us, we'll be friendly and things will be like we have said. >> reporter: this girl was 17

when she fled her home in guatemala after gangs told her to join them or die. >> translator: but if not, they told they would kill us. that's why we came here to save our lives. >> reporter: jaime is in high school trying to learn english hoping he can stay. he worries gang members from guatemala will catch up with him even here. dariana made her way to the bay area where she was reunited with her mother and father who were already here. they worry about the family's matriarch and says she surely will be killed if gangs found out they talked to us. the polite has ignited a national movement among some churches, a movement started here in the east bay. later this month, we will take you inside that movement and show you exactly how it's spreading beyond the bay area to the entire country as we continue to examine this immigration crisis. i'm stephen stock, nbc bay area
