made history? ♪ the biggest stars in the industry, now together for a new cause, bringing band aid back together, "today" november 16th, 2014. welcome to "today" on this sunday morning. i'm erica hill. >> i'm lester holt. we woke up to some awful news. isis militants have released a new video. in it, they claim to have beheaded another american hostage. that would be u.s. aid worker peter kassik. richard is covering that story for us.

>> the family hads issued a written statement saying they are aware of this claim by the militant group isis. they say they are still waiting however for confirmation from u.s. authorities. american authorities have also said they are aware of the video but are trying to confirm it. i have seen the video. it is very similar to other videos that we have seen before. the same style, the same graphic. it looks quite authentic. in it we don't actually see kassig beheaded. in a lot of the beheadings, you see a lot of the soldiers. the masked militant says he was beheaded. the 26-year-old volunteering, going to syria to help refugee families, to help give medical services to the people in that war torn country.

he was captured about one year ago. earlier, last month, nbc's peter alexander spoke with the kassig family, spoke to his father and the father had received a letter from peter while in captivity, while also in captivity peter changed his name. >> don't worry, dad. if i go down, i won't go down thinking anything but what i know to be true. that you and mom love me more than the moon and the stars. >> reporter: so now he has those effectively final words to think about as the family awaits confirmation, hearing from kassig while in captivity, saying if i go down, i will do gown knowing that you loved me. this will be the fifth western hodge that isis has killed. isis has killed many other people, this will be the fifth

western hostage. we're still awaiting confirmation. the white house has responded to this latest isis claim. we're in brisbane, australia with more. >> erica, news of the beheading came just an hour after president obama had left brisbane. he was here attending the g-20 economic summit and with the president still end route to d.c., his national security counts is he we are aware of a video that claims to show the murder of u.s. zen peter kassig by isis. the intelligence community is working as quickly as possible to determine its authenticity. if confirmed, we are appalled by the brutal murder. the united states started targeting isis in iraq this summer after the first american james foley was beheaded. a month later, u.s. launched air

strikes in syria. during a press conference, mr. obama said they hold weekly meetings about isis. in an earlier statement, president obama said it's too soon to know if the u.s. is winning the war against isis. >> thanks. this morning, a rapid response team is on the scene of a deadly chemical spill outside of houston, texas, that left four people dead and another hospitalized. now there are deep concerns about the cloud of gas that was released for miles over the area. nbc has more on the story. >> reporter: this morning officials are trying to figure out the cause of a deadly chemical leak at a dupont plant in la port, texas. >> we had the incident this morning, that resulted in the exposure of five employees, four of which were fatally exposed. >> the chemical released has a

zoo officials will ultimately decide how to pursue new safety regulations. people in hawaii are being warned to stay indoors. a break out of lava flow began advancing on the big island, but officials say it's not yet posing an immediate threat to residents. this as airplanes are being asked to avoid airspace near a volcano in alaska. it sits along international air routes. finally, one thing foreign leaders can all agree on, cuddly koalas. even australia's president eagerly posed for a pick with his russian counterpart. cheers to the healing power of

>> you brought up the putin issue. he was with him in two different places. one in beijing, that was an asia economic conference and this one, the g-20, sort of the world's largest 20 economies. there's some world leaders that are hoping this stand-off between the united states and russia will sort of ease a little bit. the sanctions against russia are having an impact on some european countries. the preds said there were no plans for any new sanctions despite the fact really that putin hasn't changed any of his actions when testimonies could ukraine. >> so some sort of an impact we can feel. back home, there's a lot of talk about this pending immigration reform that the president could announce and also one would imagine a number of meetings behind closed doors between republicans at this point. repu point. what is -- how is that going to play out? is there a sense yet? >> there's not.

in fact you have republicans -- they're meeting with themselves. republican leadership while wanting to confront and be tough with president obama if he indeed goes through on his own with executive action, the leadership doesn't want to do retribution threatening of shutdowns. you had the leadership of the republican party on capitol hill circulating a memo to fellow republicans reminding them of negative political impact the shutdown had on the republican party a year ago. there are some conservatives who say guess what, the shutdown didn't have impact or else republicans wouldn't have been so successful earlier this month during midterm elections. i think that's going to be one of the things we should be watching here. how are republicans going to deal with each other when it comes to reacting to the president? >> that's one of the things you'll tackle this morning on meet the press. anything else we should look for? >> we do a big health care focus

but just a tad bit warm in our inland valleys today. yesterday was very cool outside. we're looking at the same thing for today with a lot of cloud cover in the area. thing about today we'll continue to see the clouds stream in. same for tomorrow and we're tracking rain for tuesday night. we'll detail that at 7:00 this morning. >> looking forward to it. thank you. construction work on the bay bridge has been shifted to overnight to prevent traffic back ups. now that's creating a whole host of noise issues for people who live near the bridge. the new plan means crews will work overnight between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. this is plan b because daytime work caused such a traffic jam when crewed installed metal plates over the joint work. it was causing drivers to slow down way too much. the new hours are causing problems for neighbors. one resident is nine months pregnant and due to deliver any day now. she says hearing jackhammers at

10:30 at night makes it hard to sleep. open enrollment is under way for covered california. the state's health insurance education change. it was one of the many events held this weekend to help people sign up for and compare their health plans. health care.gov is also open for enrollment. last year the roll out took months to correct. this year the obama administration is promising health coverage without all the problems. open enrollment ends february 15th. by then republican lawmakers will have taken control of congress. they are vowing to repeal the program. get your melted butter ready because the first call of crab season has arrived. this video shows crabs full of crab being unloaded. we were told it was a great first day. bay area crabbers started early friday morning dropping thousands of traps into deep waters. yesterday was the first time they could pull up their traps. they will get $3 a pound but you

the turkey wasn't ready. we put it back in. still wasn't ready. we put it back in. it still wasn't. we had sides. >> i couldn't believe the turkey could be done that quickly. it came out really dried out. the arms were looking like this. >> my grandmother makes a strawberry salad. it's jello base, fresh strawberries, mashed pineapples, bananas, nuts. i was like i'm going to make it on my own. some how it was like soup. kids were walking around with cups and spoons. >> i like nuts and stuffing and cranberries but don't like them together. when stuffing comes and people put walnuts in, you killed a perfectly good stuffing. this is not the moment to do something different. >> i like to mix it up. i throw in a jalapeno cornbread.
