this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon this morning. >> i'm sam brock. nbc now confirming that three of at least four people killed in an attack inside a synagogue in jerusalem were american citizens who had immigrated to israel this they reportedly had dual citizenships. terrorists burst in armed with meat cleavers and guns. from london this morning, secretary of state john kerry denouncing this attack, calling it an act of "pure terror." we'll give live to the nation's

capital where we are closely watching these developments in the middle east. >> police are issuing a warning for one san jose neighborhood. be on the lookout for a big cat. you might want to keep the pets indoors this morning. several people called 911 just before midnight reporting the sighting of a mountain lion near quick silver park in the alamaden neighborhood. bob, do police have any idea where the cat went? >> reporter: unfortunately, now. police are wondering if the mountain lion last night is the same one spotted last month standing on top of a car about a mile away near the alamaden country club. they won't know until it's caught. police did search with their flashlights, this is around midnight and after people called 911 to report a big cat roaming

their neighborhood. >> lady came over to visit her mother and as she parked her car saw a large cat-like animal in front of the mother's house. >> that mother called 911. police relayed the message to her daughter, stay put in the car, wait for the officers. the mountain lion ended up leaving, leading again to the search overnight. again, no sighting since. with regards to the sighting last month, that cat stood on the roof of the car for about a good 30 seconds. the video captured by a surveillance camera. the cat took off and hasn't been seen since. residents think it came from quick silver park, which had a lot of open space. that could also be where last night's big cat came from. quick silver park not very far from this neighborhood. bob redell, "today in the bay."

>> ongoing friction with taxi companies. the latest battleground now, sfo. stephanie chuang joins us from the airport where that fight is creating conflict. >> reporter: usually you arrive at sfo, you can get into the taxi line and hop in pretty quickly. not so last night. for a couple hours drivers were protesting, looping around, blocking lanes and not picking anyone up. according to one airport manager, there were up to 100 people waiting for taxis last night causing a traffic backup heading into sfo. the drivers, though, say companies like uber, lyft and side car have been and you fairly taking away their business after they worked out

deals last month so they could pick up passengers. they say ride sharing is misleading. >> we have our own app, fly wheel. it's strictly for taxi. basically what they're doing, they're doing exactly the same thing as the taxi industry. so there's no reason why they call themselves ride share because they're not really sharing a ride and they're charging for, you know, to the customer. >> and the drivers add they have to pay things like gate and airport fees. in the agreement with sfo, they did agree to pay a fee of $4 per trip or a flat fee of $100,000 or figure out the number of trips taken. eventually last night the taxi cab drivers did pick up passengers, but the question

that's very important for passengers here is will this happen again? live sfo, stephanie chuang. >> it's time to check your forecast as we give you a live look from our san bruno mountain cameras. we see planes flying in the distance in the sky. >> a nice, clear morning right now but that may not be the case soon. >> hey, sam, kris, everybody at home. yeah, we have rain, much needed rainfall and a series of storm systems. let me break it down for you. it looks like tomorrow is going to be a rainy day. we'll get a little bit of a break on thursday. and then friday and saturday also looking to be pretty active. another break on sunday before we get more rain monday into tuesday. so that storm track is where we needed to be, dipping that jet right on top of the bay area. and for us, that means kind of like a conveyor belt, those storm systems will be able to

ride right over us and provide us with some much-needed rainfall. the good news is our hillsides are already turning green. this is going to give them that reinforcing shot of moisture. i think it's going to be pretty luscious as we get into next week with all the rainfall on the way. the first couple weeks of december should show you those pretty green hillsides. sacramento, it's chim e chilly santa rosa, it's cold enough for frost to form over your smaller bridges, like mike always points out. we'll check the details with him in just a moment. 10 degrees in trucky this morning where they're making snow. here's our weather maker, getting closer and closer to the bay area. you see the well defined counterclockwise rotation. that storm system, looks like the actual core is going to move over us. so for today enjoy the 70s. we're in the 60s. you'll notice on the bottom of

your screen well into next week after today. 71 degrees for the peninsula, the east shore at 69 degrees and, yeah, that atmospheric river making a big showing in our forecast. we'll talk about this coming up, talk about the science and how much rain we're expecting because of this subtropical tap. first we want to check your drive. it's a traffic tuesday. rain still holding off. here's mike inouye. >> you have your atmospheric river. we'll talk about the river of cars for many spots in the bay. the river is sort of stopped up because of the metering lights. that's by design to keep the bridge moving slowly over real water. the oakland area approaching the coliseum. once you're north of there, the taillights moving smoothly. we're concerned with the area, the 16th avenue offramp from southbound 880. a little indicator there behind the 880. the off ramp partially blocked by a big rig.

a smooth drive and northbound it's a general commute right now to the bay bridge. san mateo bridge is 92 and dumbarton bridge moving slowly. hayward into union city and we're seeing them start to move over toward the peninsula without any major slowing there. a little slowing north of 680 up to 880. 87 had an early burst as well. that will sort itself out. as we look at the dublin camera at 580 westbound, we're expecting a little heavier volume of traffic. it tends to be the case the week before thanksgiving people try to get a little extra work done so next week they can take it a little easy because it is a holiday week for many schools. >> want to spend time with family. >> today you're going to spend time on the road. >> prioritization. 6:09 now. amazing new video this morning. this out of chicago. right now crews are searching

for the pilot of a small airplane that crashed into a home. that was heading from mid way airport to the, tiff airport. the faa says the pilot reported engine problems shortly after take-off and tried to return to mid way but the plane crashed about a quarter mile from the airport. the two peoplin sie inside the were not injured. the "today" show will go live from the scene coming up. >> plus the panda testing the waters. we're talking about the free agent waters. the american league powerhouse, pablo sandoval is expected to be meeting with today. >> and at 6:10 now, taking a live look at the south bay this morning, a beautiful start to the day. this time tomorrow you'll be

you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back now. temperatures are chilly this morning. it's nice and clear out there as we head throughout the afternoon, pretty good looking day. temps will end up in the 70s and the rain arrives tonight. i'll tell you how much we're expecting where you live from the first of a series of storms in just a moment. >> and we're looking at a series of cars. you see the disabled truck on the shoulder, that's not a concern. it's 680 farther north.

we'll tell up what's going on for folks in concord and pleasant hill coming up. >> thank you very much. a look at today's top stories. three americans were killed in an early morning terror attack on a synagogue in jerusalem. a fourth victim was a british citizen. investigators say two palestinian attackers burst in during morning prayers with meat cleavers and guns. police shot and killed those attackers. >> adrian peterson is suspended without pay for at least the rest of this season. the nfl said peterson violated the nfl's personal conduct policy. peterson pleaded no contest earlier to reckless assault of his 4-year-old son after he disciplined the 4-year-old boy with a wooden switch. >> and san francisco supervisors could vote to change the way some hourly workers get paid it, would give them two weeks' notice on their schedule,

overtime pay for coming in last minute. >> many u.s. postal workers are demanding chang to a 911 policy they call outdated and dangerous. it is a policy that may have led to a deadly delay. investigative reporter vicky wynn is here with details on her investigation that is already prompting change. >> good morning. think about what you would do if you found a co-worker in obvious need of medical help. you'd probably call 911. we've learned employees at the u.s. postal service simply are not allowed to do that. they have to call onsite postal police officers to call 911. our investigation revealed that policy caused critical delays in a life-and-death situation in oakland. sam worked for the coastal service for 28 years. co-workers said they found him lying on his back bleeding from his mouth and ears. they spotted him sometimes between 3:00 and 3:30 in the morning but dispatch record show no one called 911 until 3:53

done in a while. >> yeah, and i've never been challenged more in my entire life either, which is why at this point you do what you can do but it's the watch and wait period. kind of like sam and his fantasy football team, right? i hear a lot about that in these halls. oh, i think you know what happened on sunday. temperatures are looking good. we're in the 40s for now. i can tell you, it's chilly out there right now. tomorrow morning it's not going to be as cold. but we will be tracking showers. we're still on the warm side of this system. we'll have a blanket of low clouds move in overnight temperature temperatures tomorrow morning will be in the 50s. it won't be as frigid out there but we will be working with rain. the clear sky over the south bay this morning, a thing of the past 24 hours from now. the same for san francisco. you're getting close to 70 degrees in the city for one

final day before our atmospheric river comes together with the jet stream. here's the deal. we've got this persistent plume of moisture. it extends from the hawaiian islands to our coast. we don't get any of that moisture unless we tap into it. which is what's going to happen, which is why we're expecting some very good totals. can you see here the reds, the oranges, the yellows, even right here in the south bay. this could make for kind of dangerous driving conditions tomorrow morning. we will be here to guide you through it. but really, we're hoping it will make for some very good looking rainfall totals because every drop in the bucket counts when it comes to us getting out of this drought situation. the good news is that's not our only storm system. look where your temperatures are headed. 74 in the south bay, 65 by tomorrow, thursday a little break for the first part of the

day before rain moves in late and that will continue into early friday and then another round and another round potentially tapping into that atmospheric river as we head throughout saturday. so tomorrow and saturday look to be the biggest of the three systems. nonetheless, we'll take all the rain we can get. mike, i'm excited. it's that time of year. we didn't have any of this last. meteorologists chomping at the bit this morning. what have you got? >> i got a deal with the meteorologist in the department right next to me and they're all chomping at the bit. so kind of scary over here. hopefully that rain comes in and calms them down. this is the bay bridge where the fastrak lanes are moving. a fender bender reported over there at treasure island. the detail the treasure island on-ramp, it does lock lo-- look like the track is flowing

uninterrupt uninterrupted. now pleasant hill just before you get to 242, reports of a mattress in the lane. so there you go, there's your build, highway 4 showing the traditional slowing, antioch, pittsburgh, bay point. westbound 580 smooth through dublin. typical pattern for a tuesday. we have a slowing for 880 south. you see nothing really unusual as far as these patterns. and building for your northbound route. across the bay, the san mateo showing typical volume. dumbarton bridge picks up a little company as well. we're looking at southbound 101. no big problems but christina does talk about a little bit of

a mist in the south bay. keep it in mind. so far no problem as far as the drive. back to you. >> looking good. thank you, mike. >> giants free agent pablo sandoval waking up in boston this morning feeling pretty cold i would say but he could be meeting with the red sox front office as early as today. >> it could be cold hearted. the kung fu panda spotted at logan international airport this morning. the red sox could possibly offer him a big deal. he could play alongside his good friend david ortiz. adding fuel to the fire last night, sandoval's brother luis tweeted out, quote, he who can give pablo what he's worth. >> the cardinal women beat connecticut in overtime. this is nothing really new.

declared a state of emergency, which allows him to bring in national guard troops just in case the decision sparks more violence and unrest. the deadly shooting, which resulted in violent protests in ferguson months ago captured national attention back in august. >> the aclu -- executions have been on hold since january when a botched lethal injection in oklahoma raised questions about the drugs used to put the inmate to death there. >> 6:26. an update to breaking news that we're following. three americans killed in a violent attack at a jerusalem synagogue. secretary of state john kerry's pointed words to palestinian

just how brutal that attack was this morning. people were in their synagogue praying when two gunmen came in and basically opened gun fire on people in the middle of prayers. some were stabbed according to reports. a lot of people were injured, at least four that we know of were killed. of those four three were israeli americans. a couple of them rabbis. some will be laid to rest today. hamas immediately praised it but didn't take responsibility. israel's prime minister is promising retaliation as a result and, as you said, secretary of state kerry, who is overseas, condemned the attack. >> people who had come to their synagogue were hand and murdered

in a holy place in a senseless act of murder. i call on the palestinian leadership at every single level to condemn this in the most powerful terms. this violence has no place anywhere. >> reporter: now, the two attackers were also killed, initially stopped by a guard there at the synagogue. kris? >> we'll be watching this one all day. very sad. thanks. >> closer to home happening today, the u.s. senate will be voting on the controversial keystone xl pipeline bill. that bill has been the center of global warming debates. if approved the project would send canadian oil straight to the gulf of members of congress co. now the republican dominated house passed the bill already last friday by a wide margin. >> it is 6:32 right now and it is time to check the forecast. look at this beautiful sunrise. who cares what's happening on the roadways. right in this moment you have a

nice thing to look out your window. it is san jose. christina loren watching the cloud to see if they'll fat i don't know -- fatten up and dump some rain. and you're making me hungry thinking of my thanksgiving festivities. we only have two more weeks to plan the big dinner. the rain that we need is coming. do we want it all at once, maybe not but we sure need the rain. starting tonight and tomorrow we're going to open up that storm window inviting any storm system that develops. pacifica this morning, a thing of the past as of tomorrow morning. the farther to the north that you live, the more cloud cover you're going to see this morning. high and mid-level clouds, we'll see a little prefrontal

precipitation, light rain showers, especially at the immediate coast and the coastal mountains as we head throughout the next couple hours. temperatures this morning are chilly. grab your jacket and you might want to bring your umbrella in san francisco and the north bay where we are expecting our activity to develop first, especially if you're someone not coming home before 5:00, 6:00. 72, one more day of 70s here in the south bay before we get the rain-cooled air and our pattern changes for days. we stop that clock for you 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. at that point you can see the front is going to come in vertically. the actual core low pressure will boost our rain fall totals upwards of a quarter of an inch in san jose. i wouldn't be shocked if it maintains its organization to pick up a half inch in the south bay. we need the snow in the sierra

nevada where we could get 6 inches. the next two could just dump over the higher elevations in tahoe. they're making snow for today, probably not going to be the case for tomorrow. a lot of people will be heading up into this direction as we head into this weekend. it's only tuesday. i like to think about the weekend any time. how about you, mike? what are you thinking about? >> like to be in a weekend mode even more. we'll take what we can get. we are in bay bridge mode. the better news is the issue over at treasure island is only affecting the on-ramp, a bummer for those getting on at treasure island. we're showing a smooth drive down the east shore freeway. southbound 880, also another issue. a big rig i told you is stalled

there blocking one of your two lanes. that's going to be there possibly after 7:00. the rest of the freeways and on-ramps are moving nicely. a typical build, the pattern for hayward. let's talk about the peninsula site. my buddy alan, a great photographer out there. you can see the hotel, i think it's a marriott across the freeway there, they're on red. once a car arrives, they'll turn green. they were on green for the last couple of weeks but now they're cycling per normal. that should keep northbound moving smoothly. there's one, two people waiting there. >> it's working! >> it's working. so we can move on. no real change in the flow to san mateo 85 really kicking in but downtown not so bad.

wellness. kaiser will examine the success of the program before it decides expanding services. certainly a lot of families will appreciate it. >> honda says it will fix the air bags of any customer who is concerned for his or her safety. however, honda says it is not expanding its latest recall, which only covers 13 states prone to high humidity. honda says prolonged exposure to high humidity could cause the air bag to explode sending shrapnel through the car in a car. >> and incredible new video. a pilot missing after a plane slams into the front of this chicago home.

now 15 minutes of continuous news, weather and traffic on "today in the bay." >> it's 6:44 on your tuesday. a gripping and unusual scene this morning. check out this video. a small cargo plane literally stuck to the front of a chicago home. in fact, it crashed right through the front window. right now crews are searching for the pilot who reported engine problems shortly after taking off from chicago's made

thereto way airport. nbc's john yang is outside the house. and, john, thankfully the elderly couple inside the house was not hurt. >> reporter: that's right. that is a twin engine propeller plane sticking out of the front of the house. they have now begun the operation to remove the pilot's body. they're confirming the pilot is dead. they've shored up the house to make sure it's structurally sound so they can move in and take the body out of the wreckage. that left chicago airport, which is around a quarter of a mile from here around 2:30 this morning. the pilot reported engine problems, tried to turn around and returned to the airport. this is as far as he got. amazingly it went into the living room of the home. the elderly couple who live in

the house were in a back bedroom. they were able to walk out without a scratch. officials are beginning to move the pilot's body from the wreckage. the amazing part is no one inside the house was injured. >> the pilot has been found now within the wreckage. he has died, a very sad story. thank you, john. he'll have an update for us at 7:00 on the "today" show. >> new this morning, san jose police spent the night combing the area near quick silver park after a mountain lion sighting. bob, certainly people see mountain lions in the area but this one might have been particularly scary for one young women.

good morning to you. you have san quentin, another gorgeous location. i can tell you right now, look at this, we set your time lapse in motion. red sky, sailors be warned. we have a storm system on the way. could that be any prettier? just gorgeous from tiburon, temperatures a little point the chilly side. we're in the 30s right now but it's going to be nice today. in fact, today will be the warmest of the week. we're going to end up a couple of degrees warmer than yesterday as we're still on the warm side of this front. 70s sound good and then we drop your temperatures into the 60s for days after that. you'll notice always scrolling at the bottom of your screen. we know how you are. you want your information instantaneously and we'll gratify that you way, always scrolling there. the good news is you'll notice

we've got rain on many of those days on your seven-day forecast. really kind of dependent on where you live in the bay area. for all of us today, increasing storm clouds, getting dark by tonight, darker clouds on the way. then our first rainfall is expected up in the north day between about 5:00 and 6:00. 72 degrees, though. we'll get showers overnight in the south bay. expecting the bulk of the moisture to come through here as we head throughout tomorrow morning. but this is what meteorologists want to see. this is what we didn't have last year. not only do we have the jet stream right on top of us, we've got that atmospheric river just to our south. now everything is going to come together as we head through tonight. the two converge and that's what produces heavy rainfall totals here montain the bay area. that's packing the most moisture. it looks like we're going to take a direct hit in the bay area from that core. and for us, it doesn't mean

pretty smoothly despite a crash at treasure island. but now a crash blocks two lanes at westbound 80. it's backed up all the way to the poll plaza. let's look at your map. the helicopters heading over there. i'm not sure what they're going to see. it does seem like it's in the tunnel but nonetheless, the helicopters heading over there. the east shore freeway really jamming up from golden gate field all the way down that span, really packing in the traffic throw. it's two tolls going across the bridge over to the west and across the golden gate bridge going into san francisco. two lanes are blocked, a live look at the san mateo bridge shows you traffic flowing relatively smoothly. we're expecting a big commute

passengers in protest of services like uber and lyft. this has been an issue for months if not years. the timing is kind of appropriate on this protest. it comes on the heels of a deal. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam. that's exactly right. the big change here is that it is now legal at least as of the last few weeks for uber, lyft and side car to pick up here on the upper level of sfo. they last month signed a deal with the airport. in protest of the business they say they're losing unfairly, dozens of cab drivers drove around the lower loop last night in a two-hour protest. there were up to 100 people waiting for taxis at one point, causing a traffic headache heading into the airport. the cab drivers, though, say they have to follow specific guidelines and eat operating costs that the ride share companies like uber and lyft and side car do not. >> we have to fill those

hit-and-run death of a 14-year-old boy in san leandro is expected in court today. sonny anderson allegedly hit the teen during a high-speed chase that began when officers tried to pull him over last week. police eventually found his car, which then led them to anderson himself. police say his criminal record includes trying to kill an elderly woman and stabbing animals at a petting zoo. >> a disturbing history there. >> a final check of the day's top stories. the pilot of a small plane is now confirmed to have died in a crash into a home in chicago. fortunately no one inside the home was hurt. >> in an attack in the middle east, three americans were killed in an early morning terror attack on a synagogue in jerusalem. a fourth victim was a british citizens. investigators say two palestinian attackers burst into that synagogue during morning prayer with meat cleavers and
