weather with dwyer in a second. a small cargo plane has crashed into a neighborhood. john, what can you tell us? good morning. >> reporter: good morning. officials have now located the pilot's body in the wreckage of that plane. it's a twin engine propellor plane sitting on the side of that house. when you look had the wreckage, amazing the people inside were able to get out without a scratch. >> i heard the plane flying by and shortly after like a loud crash. >> reporter: terrifying moments this morning after residents heard a small plane crash into a living room. >> a plane crashed into a living room and two elderly people were removed and checked by ems and they were fine. >> reporter: up in the air the pilot said he was having problems. >> i'd like to land. i'm having problems. >> reporter: minutes later, the

control asks if the pilot is okay and after minutes of silence, they confirmed the plane crashed. >> he went down, didn't make to it the airfield. >> he did not make it to the field. looks like he went down just short of 31 center. >> there are reports there is only one person on the airplane. we have not located that person yet. we have to shore up the building to do a final search. >> reporter: neighbors relieved the residents of the home were found safe. >> i'm glad the family is okay and kind of lucky, too. i guess we're all lucky it didn't start a fire or anything. >> reporter: they have now found the body of that pilot taking it out of the wreckage and ntsb is on the scene to investigate this crash. avant naw. >> amazing story. thank you very much. in the middle east, two men broke into a jerusalem synagogue overnight and killed four people. secretary of state john kerry

condition after this terrorist attack. >> reporter: within two hours the chaos spread to east jerusalem as police stormed the suspect's neighborhoods firing stun grenades. within seven hours, funerals began. the attack linked to soaring tensions between israelis and palestinians fueled to access of jerusalem's hole ieiest site. in london today, secretary of state john kerry called the bloodshed a pure act of terror. >> i call on the palestinian leadership at every single level to condemn this in the most powerful terms. this violence has no place anywhere. >> although hamas is not taking responsibility for the attacks, many of its leaders are praising the bloodshed as just retaliation. meantime, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu vowed to

respond harshly to the murders. matt and savannah, back to you. >> thank you for the latest. let's turn to ferguson, missouri where the gofrp has declared state of emergency and enacted the national guard. this with the grand jury to soon decide whether or not to indict the officer who shot and killed michael brown. ron is in ferguson. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the governor's decision to declare a state of emergency has increased the tension here and the fear of whether the grand jury will indict officer darren wilson in michael brown's death and fears of confrontation. >> reporter: with protesters threatening to march until officer wilson is charged with the death of michael brown. the governor declared a state of emergency and called the

national guard to help prevent trouble. >> my hope and expectation within the coming weeks is that peace will prevail. we have the responsibility to plan for an eventuality that might arise. >> reporter: organizers are criticizing the government that sends the wrong message. >> it kind of sends a message we are expecting the worse. i worry about that. i worry it could have an escalating effect. >> reporter: for many, it's a reminder of the days after brown's death that turned it into a battle zone. now after mostly peace fful protest, demonstrators say there's no reason to have this. >> we don't want any officers hit by flying bricks and rocks. this is an extremely dangerous situation that has occurred previously. now the fbi has warned police

if i were to swim a mile over the water we'd see snowfall rates at 5 to 8 inches an hour and in new york they are seeing heavier snow on the ground. all weekend long snow has been an issue especially towards dayton, ohio where another car crash occurred because of icy roads. elsewhere across the great lakes region we are seeing snow pile up in parts of michigan and rapid city and new york where hamburg has about 40 inches of snow on the ground. because of that we have lake-effect warnings over the great lakes crossing over the relatively warm waters of the great lakes. we will see last throughout the day and through wednesday and thursday, too. we are looking for these bands of snow to shift. as the wind shifts, the heaviest snow will shift a little bit and makes all the difference on who gets what.

we are looking for feet of snow in lake michigan and four feet of snow off the shores of lake erie and ontario and new york. 3-5 inches per hour. for the rest of us, it's all about the cold surging from the north. record low temperatures this morning and feels like temperature in the northern plains and up per midwest near zero. afternoon highs 20-30 degrees below average. wednesday, we're looking at more of the same. this cold is here to stay a while. we might see improvements over the weekend. savannah. >> the pride of erie, pennsylvania, dylan dwyer, thanks. >> some lawmakers say they are

chinese leaders have declared them illegal and neither side has shown a willingness to compromise. president obama gets a briefing from security and public health teams on the u.s. response to the ebola threat. on capitol hill, two separate hearings scheduled combatting the virus. it is showdown day on the keystone xl pipeline. supporters of the project are scrambling for what could be the deciding vote on a bill authorizing the project that could send canadian oil to the gulf of mexico. the republican dominated house passed the bill friday. the president has criticized the project but not threatened to veto. running back adrian peterson has been suspended without pay for at least the rest of the season. the nfl says peterson violated its personal conduct policy. he was charged with child abuse. peterson pleaded no contest to a lesser charge.

the road, checking into hotels. of course, when we step inside our hotel room, we assume it's clean, the maid changed the sheets, disinfected the bathroom, cleaned everything. i'm sure many of them do a great job but there are exceptions. new video from our hidden cameras exposing some dirty details. housekeeping's here. and she's changing the sheets. or is she? sanitizing the glasses. or not. to find out, we're booking rooms for two nights at some of the most popular hotel chains and riging hidden cameras to capture every dirty detail. okay. this is how we found the room. it's made up. now we're going to make it look like i slept here last night. then the card that has to be visible for them to change the bed. we're putting it right in the middle. we put soda in these glasses. to see how well they clean them. throw some towels on the floor.

make the bathroom look used. after the first night we call down. hi, can housekeeping come up and clean my room? let's start at this double tree hilton. the maid quickly strips the bed, putting the pillows off to the side. she replaces the sheets with fresh ones. but, wait. those dirty pillows she just took off seconds ago get a quick fluff. and go right back on the bed. that's pretty disgusting, considering people breathe, cough, even drool on these pillows. back in the bathroom, our cameras are also rolling. as she scrubs everything down. but then this. she uses a towel to dry the toilet, the shower and then, watch it, she use that is same towel to quickly scrub the counter. that's where you put your toothbrush. at this holiday inn, we're astonished again. the maid changes the sheets but

not the pillowcases. once again, putting the old, used pillows back on the bed. remember, at all the hotels, we put out that card to change all the linens. >> it's disgusting to watch. >> reporter: we showed our video to jacob tomsky, who spent a decade working in hotels and was even a housekeeping supervisor. what do you make of the fact that the maids never change the pillowcases? >> that's the number one thing they should change, obviously. you change the sheets, you change the pillowcases. and she put it on a dirty chair before putting it back on the bed. >> reporter: this next hotel had our experts squirming. the crowne plaza. all of our used drinking glasses. remember, i drank soda out of these earlier. she puts them into the sink and turns on the water. next, she gathers all the dirty towels from the bathroom floor. but watch. she holds on to one of them and

sets it down on the counter to help dry the cups. yep, the dirty towel used for who knows what is now being used to clean the glasses you could be drinking out of next. watch. she even puts on those paper caps to make the glasses look sanitized. then she uses the same nasty towel to wipe down the counter top, the toilet and the tub. she never uses any soap on anything. but she does come back to spritz with room spray so it smells fresh. in a statement to nbc news, the company that owns the crowne plaza and the holiday inn say health, safety are top priorities, performs regular inspections is working to review standards. the doubletree hilton told us cleanliness is and makes sure things are sanitized properly. the hotel plans to conduct a

review and address any infractions. these maids are cleaning, what, 15, 20, 30 rooms a day? >> absolutely. >> is this their fault or management for not checking? >> management should stay vigilant and check and make sure they have everything they need to do the job. that's why spot checks are good and these hidden camera things are good. it allows us into the room when we're not there. >> our expert says in many hotels housekeepers aren't even given the right tools to clean correctly. in some cases management doesn't give them soap or disinfectant so they use whatever they can, like whatever towels are available. be specific. call housekeeping when you check in. tell them, can you please change all the bedding and mention the pillowcases, too. or we used the glasses. can you replace them? better yet, the best advice. you know the plastic ones that come wrapped? use those. >> you could do what matt says, head-to-toe snuggy. >> i'm glad you brought this up

>> compound interest, for example, if you're 30 years old, you save $500 a month. at 10% interest, $1.7 million, age 65 as opposed to at 40. >> ten years later it goes down to $650,000. you can see how quickly it goes down. the math is on your side in your 30s. start investing as early as possible. >> and the tax benefit is on your side as well. >> that's right. >> investing in a 401(k) plan. >> you can start with that, yes. >> let's move on over to our 40s here. big mistake, people not having life insurance. >> yes. >> people put that off and think i'm going to live forever. >> they do. if someone is dependent upon your income, you need life insurance. if you have a family, get life insurance. both spouses' income is dependent on the family staying afloat, you both need life insurance. even stay-at-home moms need life insurance. >> do i get term, whole? what makes sense at this age. >> i suggest term. it's going to be the less -- the least expensive and probably your best bet.

so, term life insurance is the way to go. >> cool. let's move on to our 50s now. the biggest mistake, hanging on to your mortgage for tax reasons. >> yes. >> what's the benefit of doing this? >> this is a tricky one. i would rather pay the interest and get the tax benefit versus paying the taxes on what i would have for the interest. and so the fix is to get completely debt free. >> you don't like this idea of hanging on to the mortgage? >> not ideal, no. again, we'll take $200,000 mortgage, you'll pay $10,000 per year in interest, if it's a 5% interest rate. people keep that interest rate -- keep their mortgage to get that tax benefit. let's say you completely paid off the mortgage, then you have to pay taxes on the $10,000. if you're in the 25% tax bracket you'll pay $2,500 to the irs. >> pay off the debt as soon as possible. >> exactly. >> last one in your 60s, mistake a lot of parents make, they want to give back to their kids and loan money to their kids.

>> alester was a prosecutor. she has ten books of her own. some like the plot of the last book, "i've got you under my skin." they said why don't we take the same characters and make it a series. that's how it happened. >> okay. >> because i always was fascinated by people who were under submission for an unsolved murder. >> i love it. >> that kind of thing. but i thought suppose we do a program, a television program where you bring those people in, and they're giving their version of what happened. >> are some of these ripped from the headlines, real crimes, or do they all cook up in your head? >> well, the one that i did in april, that cooked up out of my head. this one, "the cinderella murder," there was a story about a young girl, a college girl, who was murdered.

and her shoe had fallen off trying to escape. but we don't write about her at all. we just take the basic situation and say, let's see what we can do with it. >> mary, why do you think you had so much success as a novelist? a lot of people put books out there. why do you think you're close to 50 now that are always, always first on the new york times best-seller list. >> i honestly think that i'm a storyteller. and i think that, you know, an irish storyteller, irish say nothing simply. i heard that, you know, growing up. she married that one. >> exactly. >> yeah, yeah. >> and i think it is storytelling that people want. >> can't beat a good story. >> natural to me. the only talent i have. >> only talent you need. >> your facebook fans want to ask you questions. how many hours in a day on average do you write? >> well, i start in the morning, of course. there is a business end to
