good friday morning. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. bracing for round three. a live look at the toll plaza down to the south bay. today you could call it the calm before the storm. >> yes, it is. the radar just sitting right offshore. christina tracking closely the timing of that rain. she'll tell us how it will impact your weekend plans. >> you just saw that front in realtime. let's move you forward in time and stop that clock for you at 1:00 a.m. this front is just hours away at this point and it's going to provide us with another dousing of heavy rainfall up in the north bay. a lot of people trying to get out for holiday travel. if you're headed to the north, i would say you want to wait for this to come through. a lot of that activity starting to press to the south of the

golden gate bridge. so here's the deal, after 10:00, you can go ahead and head north. if you're waking up with us north of the golden gate bridge. if you're heading to southern california by vehicle because gas prices have fallen, a lot of people will be traveling by car this year, that storm is going to be trachveling with you so you're much better off leaving on sunday. plus there's a lot going on as we usher in the holidays. right now back to you, sam and laura, and the top stories of the day. >> thanks so much, christina. president obama is headed to las vegas this morning to try to rally support for his executive action on immigration. it was there one year ago he launched his initial campaign to overall the immigration system here in the u.s. now while in las vegas, he will

sign two presidential memorandum. people must pass background checks and pay taxes to be eligible. >> we do have two reports this morning on this very important topic. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez has a live report. >> we have a lot of anticipation in the city of las vegas, the gymnasium is preparing for that presidential visit. the high school, as you mentioned, is somewhat symbolic for president obama. he came here during his campaign as a presidential hopeful back in 2008 and then he returned last year after his reelection and on that day he vowed to begin a crusade for immigration

reform. so he comes to de la soul high school to sign those presidential memorandums knowing most of the students here come from immigrant families. he comes here to vegas to begin his sales pitch for the new immigration rules. again, the presidential arrival is scheduled just after 12:00 here. we'll be here live in las vegas throughout the afternoon bringing you updates online also and on the news at 5:00 and 6:00. >> the broad brush stroke laid out and now people want to know about the details. >> the president's order will on protect nearly 5 of the 12 million immigrants living here in the u.s. while some say it is a good start, it leaves others asking what about me? kris sanchez will have that coming up at 6:30 this morning. and you can always head to our

web site for an update, nbcbayarea.com. >> a massive 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of indonesia. it happened just hours ago. that country is still on edge from a 4.7 shake and several aftershocks it experienced struck just a week ago. >> a really nice view of san jose, hazy depending on where you are in the bay area. >> the fog could be impacting people here as we await another round of rain. let's check in with christina loren, she's very busy today. >> hey, good morning. everybody at home, another storm system on the way. we're tracking the aftermath of the last system that came through with some really deep fog settling in. we typically see the fog coming

in off the pacific. san francisco right now is mostly clear. you'll notice we are getting that deep gray through your inland valley spots and it's that fog that is setting up here that could be problematic for people trying to get out of town. this could be problematic for you. just travel very cautiously and count on the fog to stick right here in the central valley, all the way through about 9:00 a.m. and it should start to burn off. as we head throughout the day today, you can see where we're getting that thick, thick gray as well and that's through marin county, sonoma county and through the delta. our next round of rain arrives as we head throughout the night. this one is going to fall on an already saturated ground. we could see our storm reports increase. we're going to get some rich moisture out of this as well.

it won't last all day. you'll still be able to get out and do your plans. maybe shopping is on the list this weekend for example, as we head to about 3:00 p.m. on saturday. maybe you want to stop by safeway and see us if shopping is in your plans. mike, where are you going to be? >> i'll be at the safeway in fremont. we're all going to be out there. stand by for that report. it's a noisy one. the metering lights are on. some folks didn't expect it, as you would. that is backing folks up back in toward about west grand avenue. let's also look at the north bay, san rafael, where we show the lights glowing a little more. the traffic builds a bit, i think folks getting into the office early so they can get out of the office early before next week's vacation for a lot of schools and a lot of families. a lot of concern with the fog,

heading up to santa rosa and north of the antioch area. the bay bridge an easier drive aside from the metering lights. a slower drive just starting to develop 880 through hayward, south of the san mateo bridge. it's easing in once again. the second burst should start in a few minutes, not a dramatic one really. also know that i-80 are open. christina is talking about that snow coming given. you'll have some great snow. >> it's something to start thinking about, getting the chains ready, the parka. >> and don't forget the gloves. >> it's all about the outfit really. >> the cool gloves. >> just into our newsroom, a new

asking engineer barbie what she's working on. it's a game involving a puppy. skipper asks if she can play. barbie says it's not ready because she needs steven and brian's help to make it a real game. and have i to admit, it's the first time i've actually read a children's book on tv. steven points out, you know what, barbie, it will go faster if brian and i help. the woman who wrote this told abc she was on deadline and may not have realized quite how controversial all this may have been, but barbie needing a lot of help with her computer engineering. >> also a columbia university professor, tim wu, he invented the term net neutrality. he wrote a piece for the new yorker in which he tells the new yorker he is never flying them again. united has the second highest level of complaints in the world behind spirit airlines. it employs nearly 10,000 people

in san mateo county and that's almost double facebook. the economists did a reality check on this asking is united airlines really that bad and you know you have a p.r. problem when this is your headline. the economist's conclusion united airlines is not uniquely bad, it's just standard bad. >> so basically reality here people don't always love their airlines aren't necessarily totally on board with some of those changes. >> particularly the merger. we've heard it a lot. second highest level of complaints ever. >> thank you, scott. the economist trying to take my job. in tahoe, snowboarders and skiers are simply stoked, for lack of a better word. heavenly and north star, showing the recent accumulation of snow. the rain that past through the area is giving a big boost to

ski areas to hope up before the thanksgiving holiday. >> that is fantastic. more rain headed our way. going to get a little break from it. christina joins us now with a look at the microclimate forecast. beautiful golden gate bridge this morning. >> it always looks a little prettier around the holidays, doesn't it? >> kind of getting in that spirit, right? >> yeah, i love this time of year. and tahoe, snowfall. let's talk about some of the other resorts opening soon and what we're expecting from this next round of snow up there. i can tell you, snow levels are going to be a little height, 6,000 feet to 7,000 feet. this is a colder system so of the three that we've had, this is going to likely provide the highest snowfall totals and we could pick up to a foot of pressure powder sugar bowl. they'll be opening up on the first of december.

meanwhile a couple of those resorts like we said squaw looking to open up on the 26th. if you've been putting off everything that you need to do, i hate to say it but saturday is not a great day to get on outdoors and do anything. even when it comes to shopping, you'll have to hold on to your shopping bags tight with some wind on the way. and more rain as well but as you know, we need it. this in and of itself is a gift for the holidays. mount tam, 3.97, just under 4 inches of rain. that's a really, really important total. that's where we need the rain to fall because that needs into our local reservoirs. and the next one looking really juicy could provide an additional 3 inches of rain to mount tam, which is really important because it feeds into bon tempe, phoenix and the water

shed. the fog is settling in. it's rather thick. it's drifting around. you'll find the thickest fog through the delta. that's where it's creeping in, up in marin county, sonoma county. otherwise we don't have a lot of fog at the coast. temperatures mostly in the 60s. for now it's going to be a nice cool day. it's cool out there now. we're going to stick with the 60s for today, tomorrow and finally reaching into the 70s as we get into next week. here's a little bit of a timeline for you, help up get out and about for your saturday if that's what you're trying to do. 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. is when we're expecting the rain near the golden gate bridge, then north of 92 and it moves into our neck of the woods 9:00 a.m. till noon on saturday. monday looks good for a nice dry day. by tuesday 71 degrees,

comfortable conditions. at that point, though, mike, only two days before that thanksgiving feast needs to be ready. and of course those of us shoppers, good consumers as i like to think of us, we like to think about friday getting out. >> we'll keep that in mind as we continue to make our plans for this weekend. if it's vacation for your family, maybe thing can be a little more flexible. over at the bay bridge, the metering lights are turned on. now that's a pretty intense backup for a friday. look at the incline which moves smoothly back towards san francisco. as we look at the map, i think people going into the office early so they can get out of the office early, likely what's going on over there. the far north bay, north of nevada, that might be an issue for 101 north. dumbarton bridge, no real drama.

april, seniors from the high school to demonstrate. you got these $10 bags of groceries that are already prepacked. you do what matty and april do. you pick it up, you pay your $10 and then you walk over to the bin and you put it in the bin and that food goes off to one of seven food banks. that was unbelievable! unbelievable, ladies. seven food banks here in the bay area to help the 780,000 people who are unfortunately relying on food banks here in the area. we have team barnes, de la cruz out of hayward to help feed the poor and the hungry. we've seen the numbers go up overs years. tell me about it. >> people come to us for food, for assistance. we serve the homeless. we have a food pantry to help those in the community.

>> how big of an assistance is this? >> this is a tremendous help. we couldn't do this without safeway and the a alameda count we couldn't do this. >> reporter: do you see this at lower levels? >> a lot of our clients are paid lower incomes and so they just need extra assistance. on wednesdays we actually have the homeless who have no income. >> reporter: thank you very much. happy thanksgiving to you. they've already prepacked it with these $10 bag, you walk in, they've got tons of these bins here and you help feed the poor. last year we sold 134,000 of

memorandum allowing millions of undocumented immigrants to stay in the u.s. legally. it could protect as many as 5 million people from deportation. and kris, suffice it to say the house speaker is not too pleased. >> reporter: no, and his tone has not changed. he decried the president's executive action immediately but this morning he's not changed his tone. >> the president has chosen to deliberately sabotage any chance of enacting bipartisan reforms that he claims to seek. and as i told the president yesterday, he's damaging the presidency itself. >> reporter: john boehner says the president essentially made the humanitarian crisis at the border worse by encouraging more people to come here with the promise of protection. right after the president spoke, we heard from folks at our lady

of guadalupe church in san jose and at an advocacy group in oakland. they say the president's action for them is a good start. the president's action will remove the threat of deportation for folks who have been in this country for at least five years, who have children who are u.s. citizens or legal residents, but they also must pass a criminal background check and they have to pay taxes. we also heard from republicans who say the president is breaking the law. we'll start there. as we mentioned, john boehner this morning saying the president is exacting like an emperor. the president's response was pass a bill. you doesn't like my option, pass a bill. many folks say it may not be to keep them here forever but this

seneca, new york. a few miles away buffalo isn't expected to see any new flakes today but they've been inundated with so much snow. right now people are hoping their roofs don't collapse under the weight of all that snow. new concern is severe flooding as temperatures are supposed to warm up this weekend. in the meantime, sunday's nfl game between the jets and the bills will now take place monday in nearby detroit. the league chose to move the game because the field is buried under several feet of snow. >> they were going to pay fans $10 an hour but they couldn't get enough manpower to get all that snow removed. this is a live look outside of the bay bridge. beautiful picture there as we're awaiting more rainfall today. >> which is really great news for our dry, dry california. christina, when is it coming in?

>> coming in tonight into tomorrow morning, which is great news because a lot of the kidos have one more day at school before we head into next week and a lot of the kids have next week off for thanksgiving. really quickly as of tonight it's back in the forecast. let's talk about the fog settling in right now. this is the story of the morning, not going to be a story all day long. by about 9:00 a.m., a lot of this will burn off. it's not the usual fog that we get here in the bay area that settles up and downtown coast, it's your thick valley fog, high pressure moving in is going to keep us dry. it compresses the moisture we saw yesterday. in places like san jose we'll be about 64 degrees. so still on the cool side but not bad, not too cold just yet. 62 in san francisco and 63 in the north day for today with that rain moving in as we get into tonight. before this system comes through, though, it's going to kick up some very gusty wind,

especially through the mountain passes, trying to get to tahoe could be downright dangerous with wind gusts of 75 miles per hour on the way as we head through tonight into tomorrow morning and those are hurricane force wind gusts. more on that coupling e -- comi up. let's check your drive and find out how that fog is treating you this morning. >> we're watching for the effects of that fog. you see the low clouds at the top of the screen but not a factor for the drivers. you're still at the limit on the peninsula. the build starting to show you the general trend there, showing that typical pattern, a light are friday commute, smoother drive on both sides of the bay. showing slowing through hayward. the bay bridge metering lights

a walmart. the man handed the pharmacist a note in each case saying he had a gun. a weapon was not actually seen in either case. in one of the attempts the man left empty handed. >> if you spent any time in san francisco over the past five decades, you probably would have encountered the brown twins. they walked around san francisco dressed the same for years. last year vivian brown died. now medical examiners say her sister, marion, has died at a hospice center in san mateo. they certainly did bring a lot of cheer. may they rest in peace. >> house speaker john boehner

window this morning, a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza down to the south bay. christina loren tracking the timing of the rain and how it will impact your weekend plans. >> meantime, with a break in the rain right now, today looks like the best day to get a jump on your holiday travel. >> if you're fortunate enough to get a jump on it. stephanie chuang is live at the international airport where a brand new way to get between bart and the airport kicks off this weekend. >> good morning. travelers especially during the holiday season know how every minute can really count. we have this new tram system from bart that replaces the air bart bus service, which averaged 20 minutes, now set to go down to 8 minutes. bart says the fully automated trains go at 30 miles an hour. there are four of these pulled by a series of cables. they say four years after breaking ground this service is well worth the $480 million

price tag for its efficiency and push for the future. >> there's nine intersections and traffic can vary from day to day. the reliability should be much greater. >> reporter: and san jose international is trying to provide stress relief by providing adorable therapy dogs. the airport expects to serve 350,000 travelers during this thanksgiving air travel period, which starts today. and that is up from 7% from the same time last year. and in fact triple a estimates there will be 46.3 million americans traveling 50 miles or more from home. that's the highest since 2007. 90% are traveling on the road. helping drivers this year, the lowest gas prices in five-year thanksgiving lows. the bart tram you can take it

we reduced that visibility down to a quarter of a mile. it's really setting up in the central valley. if you're headed north into sacramento or south into bakes are field or los angeles, that thick fog is going to be a factor, at least for the next couple of hours. it should start burning off after 9:00 a.m. clouds on the increase for the second half of the day, filling in all our skies across the bay area. our ground is saturated so we are expecting more storm reports from this next round. from the get-go this has what looks like the most potent in terms of energy and power that it will bring with it. so we have a high-wind watch tonight. if you're headed to sierra nevada, you'll want to travel cautiously. i stopped that clock for you at 1:00 a.m. and take you through

the 5:00 a.m. hour. still getting that rich moisture up here in the north bay. all of that will spread into the south bay between about 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. moving over towards tahoe and in to southern california. you will be driving with that system if you plan on traveling on saturday. sunday will be a much better day. we could also see flight delays on saturday. it could impact travel in the skies as well. sunday into monday, things start to clear out. we'll get some sunshine for you. then by tuesday warming you up to about 71 degrees before our next round of rain moves in potentially, as we head throughout wednesday and thursday of next week. speaking of next week, one of my favorite things all year long, we're partnered up with koit, 96.5 and they're going to flip the switch on the christmas music. actually, i get to flip the switch. that's going to be on the 26th. we're going to do it live right

won't be eligible because states don't recognize same-sex marriage. >> if family relationships through marriage or blood is the only way can you seek deferred action or seek recognition or seek to coming to stat you, that will leave out perhaps tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of lgbt families. >> another group that appeared to be left out, unaccompanied minors who came to the u.s. to flee violence from their native countries. one of the requirements is they have to have lived here for five years. those unaccompanied minors who flooded the borders would be exclud excluded. >> there are a lot of questions on the president's plan. thank you very much, kris. scott mcgrew will join our

conversation now. >> scott, high tech was really watching the president very carefully. >> silicon valley wants more h1b visas. until we see the actual text of the order, we won't know where we stand with that. what is encouraging is what kris mentioned, the president appears to expand the f-1 visa, the optional training program, a pipeline to bring in and keep foreign engineering students. we talked about this couple a lot, an example of imgrags policy. they created an app company while they were in america, they were in college, employed a bunch of people but were told to go home to india after they graduated because they were done with school and their visa ran out. they kept the company, they just moved it to india. so an expansion of the f-1 visa, which we think we're going to see, would have let them stick around longer. again, we need to see the particulars and we're going to get so many of them from damien

in las vegas. >> we always talk about so many people in need. nbc bay area teaming up with safeway to kick off a one-month event to help fight hunger. >> someone is composing over there. can you explain how you can join that effort for folks interested for just about $10. >> $10. we have to thank the high school highlander for running their own food drive. that are benefiting the food bank, as are we, the alameda food bank and six other food banks with our sixth annual help end hunger food drive. you spend $10 and up get this prepackaged bags and you put it in one of these bins over here and it will go off to seven food banks in the area. unfortunately there are 780,000 people in the bay area who rely on food from food banks.

you're looking at one in six or one in five people. we put the bags up to the recipe challenge saying with the ingredients, what can of recipes can you come up with? we have jenny lowe here, nutritional manager from the food bank. and you came up with what? >> these are spicy tuna casserole cups, we used the macaroni and cheese and the tuna and other easily accessible produce items and pantry items. really easy to make, ten minutes in the oven and they're ready to go. >> reporter: and when families come in, you want to show them how to make the most with what little they receive, correct? >> not on do we try to ensure the food we distribute is as healthy as possible, we try to help clients make best use of the foods that we're giving out. >> rayna is a senior.
