school and college in san francisco. wasn't never a niner fan. >> was born in '83. i was born at the perfect time to be a niner fan. right as the asession -- it wasn't full tilt. you're born in '87. we had two super bowls before you. i punched my ticket before the ascension. it was great. >> i'm from reno, nevada. we got raiders games and niners game. if i was 6, i would lean more towards the niners. >> i lived all over the midwest. i probably went to 12 different grade schools or something like that. my parents aren't in the military, they're just divorced and unhappy. people move around a lot because of that. as a kid, i was a niner fan because i never felt like i had a home. but the niners were on tv. the one team, no matter where i lived. i became a fan when i was a young kid. >> i was born a niner fan.

my dad and uncles, my entire family die-hard niner fans. >> there was no choice. my first piece of clothing of a niner on er onesie. i think from my earliest memory, no matter what was happening, i could just talk to my dad about the niners. >> we had an entire section at candlestick that is section 62 above the jumbotron. we had a block of seats there. every kid from my grammar school, my cousins. and so that just started to expand and leading going into levi stadium we have 16 seats and we're all in the same section still. but i wouldn't sit anywhere else, except the york box when they invite me after this. >> being a niner fan is one thing, whether it's a birthrite or choice, the decision to become a fan sometimes chooses us.

just as did the decision these four faithful made to pursue their life's work. >> i would call the comedy club, and i had no idea how it worked. i'm like, i want to do a show. they're like, whoa, whoa, you can do open mike. that sounds horrible. >> i graduated from the university of san francisco. i'm a human resources personnel at usf because my mom started this personnel company. so, then we had this family business where i hired and fired people. i always wanted to be a stand-up comic and always wanted to do it, but now i have this family business. it's doing really well, but i'm miserable. then i started doing stand-up. i know if i don't do it before i'm 30 years old, i'm never going to do it. >> comedy was bonding between me and my dad. i thought they were funny. in high school i was a smartass and i thought, why don't i try to get paid to be a smartass. >> i wanted to be a comedian when i was 8.

it took me ten years to write the first act and get it on stage. that's sarcasm. ten years i walked on stage at 18 and started touring full time at 20. i've been all over the country. i never had another job other than this since i was 20 years old. >> appearances at 100,000 and sometimes millions continued to fuel these funny men propelling them on all cylinders toward center stage. ♪ >> please welcome tommy. >> steve. >> al! a family

paramount, the limelight is unmistakenably bright, but the road there can be all but game yous. >> you're climbing through the system. you want to make it to the bigs. like athletes, i want to make it to the bigs. i kept my day job. i had a family and wife and responsibility to my parents' family business. so, my struggle is the same as some 19-year-old kid that's put a clothing rack in a mini van and a mattress and driving from bad one-nighter to one-nighter as a feature act making $00 a show and relying on the free meal. >> you're trying to be funny, which is a subjective thing. it's like, entertain me. you think it's funny? yeah. thank god. i can please have my check and go home? >> there are comics out right now that are on the road in some bad "c" or "b" club, sweating it out, doing whatever they can and it's tough. being a comic when you're starting out and working a gig or being an actor, it's hard.

>> being away from people, being with your loved ones is kind of tough. >> at some point along the way, someone let out that comedians are all sad people. that was the thing we had that we didn't tell people for a while, that we're just depressed when we're not around people. so, now people know that. i cry a lot more than people that have non-comedy jobs. i cry when i see people cry. it's like a yawn for me. every second of my life i'm within a minute of crying. i could do it right now. don't make me do it because i don't know if i could stop. we would wrap the whole shoot. >> clearly, anything worth having is worth working for. the world of comedy is in no different. on stages and theaters and casting calls all over the country, these four comics tour for the ultimate prize. but it was inside these very walls that their 49ers connection was initially uncovered. >> i met al 10, 15 years ago at

the comedy club. i knew there was one thing he knew more than his family, more than come dishgs the 49ers. when i dear friend of mine got a job with the 49ers, so without him even knowing i got in touch with al. i told al there might be an opportunity. the phone rang. my buddy said, you know anybody that's funny that happens to be a 49ers fan? i made the phone call and here i was making one of my friends happy by giving him a lottery ticket. i felt like willy wonka when he had bill's candy shop hand charlie the golden ticket. and i knew they would go together better than chocolate and peanut butter. >> i was thrilled when we found out we were going to be able to work with the team. it was so surreal. like one of those moments, somebody's going to pull the plug. seemed too good to be you true. >> i don't know that i ever reacted the same when i found

out we were going to film with the 49ers. >> we owe it to al. he was so calm and rational. he was like, hey, i heard from the niners. it takes a second after it ends to be like, that was great news. ♪ ♪ >> i think our casting was pretty good. al being the grizzled vet is perfect. >> perfect casting for all of us. david huntsberger is maybe one of the most knowledgeable sports fan i've ever met. >> a fog horn, goes off once.

comedy. and then about the second thing we learned about each other is that we're niners fans. >> we're all real fans. we all really follow the team. it's not just a passing thing. these guys have such a ridiculous knowledge of the team, they're real fans. >> when you find someone is a fellow niner fan, you're like, we have all these memories we can talk about. all these specific memories are probably important to you as well. you can just say a player's name and if you know someone is a niner fan and i can be like, merton hanks. oh, yeah! the rubber neck chicken dance! you can say words like that, and as a community, you want people to react in a certain way, as a niner fans, you know words they'll react to. the cowboys. i hate them. god, i hate them. any time you bring up something to a niner fan, you just have common ground to talk to them about. and when you have a comedian that's also a niner fan, you

have that much common ground. we're all circles hoping to cross over at some point. >> circles that cross over, that's what fandom is all about. it's generations connecting, sewn together by stories from the past, compounded by stories of the now. personal connections are made with complete strangers. friendships are created from common ground newly discovered. it's a true ever lags of the faith. >> well, i met tommy in virginia beach at a funny bone. and this is six or seven years ago. and we talked about getting to a point in our careers when we would go to be able to follow the team and do shows and then go to an away game. that's the dream. >> we're going to get our careers to the point where we can go to a city they're in, put a show together. he's been talking about it with soda for years, hunts for years.

we're all like, yeah, yeah, yeah, that would be great. and quietly we're like, that's not going to happen. >> al's been kicking around an idea of us doing a show. i thought we were just talking about it. >> and getting that call, it's like that thing you have that's sort of a pipe dream, it may happen. >> you imagined some day it may happen, but the fact it's a reality is just crazy. >> it was as real as it could get. four truly faithful fans having enough clout in the business that they could fill three arts and comedy clubs in enemy territory. so as dan, david, tommy and al packed their bags and hit the road, their favorite team was doing the very same thing. this time headed for our nation's capital for a prime time match-up. >> touchdown, 49ers! >> and the night before in nearby virginia, they had a show
