a good one. let's begin, speaking of black friday, the shopping frenzy a day for bargain hunters on a mission. we fanned out across the country from the mall of america in minnesota to a packed shopping center in ohio. to right here in new york's always busy times square. and carrie sanders braving the crowds for us north of miami. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. here at the mall like shopping centers across the country the crowds began showing up early all chasing the great deal. america's holiday shopping season is now at full tilt. with bargain hunters determined not to miss out on those after thanksgiving deals. >> last year i came late and there was like lines and lines. >> reporter: several video it popping up on line allegedly showing chaos in the aisles as

customers battle to save a few bucks. the international council of shopping centers estimate black friday is now such an event in our country, four out of ten american shoppers do their holiday buying today. >> the question that's on a lot of consumers' minds is, do you actually go out and buy today? or do you maybe play the waiting game. the answer is both. you probably do a little bit of shopping told, then you supplement that in subsequent days leading up to christmas. >> reporter: retailers hope this year falling gas prices help accelerate sales, it's estimated for everyone penny drop in the price of gas at the pump consumers have additional billion dollars in discretionary spending. >> the outlook for spending is rather good. stronger than we've seen in a number of years. many are forecasting we'll see holiday sales grow more than 4%. which is quite strong. >> reporter: for parents. >> my teenage son wants video games and my 5-year-old wants

ninja turtles. i'm not sure what my daughter wants. what do you want? >> reporter: the pressure is on. >> we'll find something. >> reporter: the must-have gift for boys, legos. and for girls, anything to do with the movie "frozen." and trying to avoid being frozen, may be why we found two best friends from toronto on a three-day trip to miami just for black friday deals. >> i feel like it's halloween for grown-ups. i like the sales for sure. >> reporter: of course the canadians don't have the day after thanksgiving sales like we do because their thanksgiving is in october. natalie, i know you have been doing research and just off camera willie has all of his circulars for his shopping plans. >> newspapers get that much thicker. thanks so much. we're going to have your black friday deals where you find them coming up later on. >> it was black thursday for

more than 300,000 americans who woke up on thanksgiving without power. this in the wake of the strong nor'easter that slammed the east coast. dylan has more on that situation. >> yes. talk about adding insult to injury here. millions of americans first endured treacherous travel for thanksgiving, then many found themselves dining in the dark. as a stunning sunrise signaled thanksgiving day in the northeast, it was still lights out for hundreds of thousands of people. heavy snow, up to 20 inches in some states, brought down trees, branches and power lines across the region. this pole was snapped by a large branch. traffic moving slowly at the intersection, left without a working stop light. >> it's beautiful when the snow sticks to the trees like this but that is the problem. >> reporter: the heavy snow wasn't the only problem. cars filled with last-minute travelers brought down lines. >> it was a big night for travel. people trying to get home or get someplace for the holiday, and a lot of people slid into poles. >> reporter: crews are working

around the clock to restore power. in good spirits despite their holidays being disrupted. >> we don't believe until last person is on. >> reporter: new englanders are nothing if not resourceful. photos posted on social media show people using gas stoves and outdoor grills to cook their thanksgiving feast and dining by candle light. thanksgiving plans adjusted by mother nature but no cold turkeys in sight. fortunately, most of the power has returned but for some of the harder hit areas in parts of new hampshire and maine, it could be another day or two before the lights come back on. >> the weather quieter today and this weekend, we hope. >> minus the northwest, looking pretty good. >> protest organizers in missouri are trying a new strategy today to bring attention to that grand jury decision in the michael brown case. a boycott of black friday shopping. nbc's ron allen has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the idea is the collective buyer

power of people demanding justice for michael brown and make a statement. during the course of the protests there have been attempts to disrupt shopping malls and retail stores. this calls for a boycott of black friday seems to have a profound impact. around 75 protesters marched into a st. louis area target thursday night calling on shoppers to boycott black friday, one of several retail stores visited as police stood watch. in ferguson, police and national guard troops took up positions outside a walmart as calls for protests spread with the #blackout black friday and #boycott black friday. but thanksgiving mostly brought calm. michael brown's family gathered around their table, one chair left empty. the picture tweeted by advocates for families who lost loved ones to police violence. protesters demanding justice for

brown tried to make their voices heard at new york's huge thanksgiving day parade. seven were arrested. >> how are you. >> reporter: steve moore took down some of the boards protecting his ferguson restaurant and hoped customers would come back. >> i'm barely making it but i have to reach out and let people know there is hope. >> reporter: business is off 80% but he offered free meals to guests from a church. >> what's good? >> everything. >> you think the trouble is over? >> i do not. it's just beginning. >> reporter: now supporters of the man at the center of attention here officer darren wilson, also are speaking out. >> people throughout have offered bounties on his light. he believes if he went back to a department, he would put other officers at risk. >> darren can never be a police officer again. >> reporter: not surprisingly they say wilson intends to keep a low profile for a while, while the storm raises around him. retailers no doubt want to see

if this call for a boycott takes hold. natalie, willie. >> ron allen in ferguson, thank you, ron. >> sheinelle jones here with breaking news out of texas. >> we start with that a. gunman is dead after a shootout with police on the downtown streets of austin, texas. authorities say the suspect was shooting at police headquarters and other buildings, he was shot and killed by police. police still aren't sure about the motive. no one else was injured in the incident. some dramatic video of two new york boys pulled to safety after being buried in a snow bank for several hours. a plow operator pushed snow over their fort not realizing they were there. >> the snowbank was probably over six or seven feet tall. >> a dramatic scene captured on a cell phone camera shows a group of residents and police frantically digging out two boys buried under a snow bank for hours. >> it was all just really adrenalin. wasn't thinking of much to get

the kids. >> reporter: the cousins, ages 9 and 11, were building a snow fort across the street from an apartment complex, when a plow driver who was clearing the lot dumped more snow on them. when the boys didn't return home police canvassed the neighborhood until something caught an officer's eye. >> he located a shovel in a snow bank and he figured he'd take a couple digs in there and he saw the boot of one of the children. >> went to all of the neighbors asking for shovels. >> the boys were conscious and suffering from exposure to cold. though they had to spend part of thanksgiving in the hospital this mother is grateful her son and his cousin are alive. she posted this picture, praising newburgh police for their heroic efforts. we're happy they are okay. pope francis is expected to tread lightly during his three-day visit to turkey, sensitive to the diplomatic tensions between turkey and the international coalition fighting the islamic state. nbc's richard engel is in

istanbul. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. pope francis meets with turkey president on the agenda terrorism and the on going refugee crisis because of the wars in iraq and syria. landing today pope francis is only the fourth pope to visit turkey. a muslim country with deep christian roots. for 1,000 years, istanbul, then constan ta nopele was the seat of a christian empire. reaching out to the orthodox community is the main spiritual goal of the pontiff's trip. but this is also a region at war. turkish media report 10,000 police have been directed to protect the pope's three-day trip. of concern is isis. the pope has taken a strong stand against isis, supporting the use of force against them and calling their persecution of christians in syria and iraq the

worst since the early days of christianity. isis in areas it controls has given christians the choice of converting to islam or being killed. many christians escaped and are now refugees. isis speaks frequently about the pope, calling him a crusader. and isis propaganda magazine showed the group's black flag superimposed in st. peter's square. after visiting pope francis comes here to istanbul where he will meet with orthodox christian leaders. >> thank you, richard. australian lawyer is looking on the bright side. he set a record by stringing up look at this, almost 1.2 million christmas lights in the center of the nation's capital. it took volunteer lighting architects, designers and engineers months to build this display. they installed 75 miles of multi-colored wire strung in the shape of three interconnected giant wrapped christmas gifts. this will help raise money for a

charity. i feel like the bar gets higher every year. for these displays. >> glad all the light bulbs connect. >> always the one. >> 1.2 million. tough find. >> dylan, now to the forecast. how is it looking? >> here it's fine. let's talk about australia for a little longer. we had a big storm hit brisbane with large hail and wind gusts of near 90 miles per hour. it was strong enough to rip some of the roofs off of homes, look at all of this wind damage here. streets were flooded out. 90,000 people are without power at the height of the storm, now still about 68,000 without power. you can see the reason why all of the downed trees and the power lines here and even these planes tossed like toys in some of that wind. closer to home we're looking at some pretty wet weather near seattle, stretching down to the coast of oregon. we have a flood watch in effect in the seattle area because we've seen a few inches of rain

fall, it's the strong onshore flow that's going to keep the moisture around throughout the day today. the flood watches in effect until later this afternoon. this cold front is going to move in, change the rain to snow action possibly even in seattle. mostly across the mountains, then much-needed rain and snow back through northern california where we could see several inches of rain. and you can also see in the sierra nevada we could end up with at least a foot of snow. further to the north and east near the northern rockies into montana we could see about a foot or two of snow, especially into tonight and then into tomorrow as well. that's a look at the weather across the country. your local forecast is coming up in 30 seconds.

>> she's very pleasant and all smiles but deep down she's stone cold. >> speaking of layers. >> we'll get them in. >> it's a little late for that. all right, let's take a look at what's making headlines this morning. crews are working to restore power across the east after that fast-moving nor'easter knocked out electricity to more than 340,000 customers. more than half of them in new hampshire. protesters in missouri have taken their anger inside stores on this black friday. about 7 5 people demonstrated at this crowded target near st. louis overnight. police were not present and there was no violence and no arrests made. a water main break on the pacific coast malibu, california, have created a major backup. opened a small sinkhole and the pch was closed for nearly four hours overnight while the crews worked to shut that water off. who has leftovers?

this morning, how to turn your old, boring turkey, stuffing and sides for a abrand-new feast. >> that old, boring turkey. let's begin this half hour with a string of robberies in chicago where thieves are getting creative to break into stores. kevin tibbles has that story. >> reporter: the smash and grab is now the crash and grab. a half dozen chicago retailers, the victims of hit and run robberies, literally. >> it's unbelievable. >> very scary. >> reporter: this gaping hole in the back of a chicago clothing store was discovered thanksgiving morning. surveillance video shows a stolen pickup pounding its way right through a brick wall before the store was looted by thieves. just as the holiday rush gets under way, police say organized gangs are using stolen cars and trucks as bat ramps. >> multiple vehicles being used and multiple offenders.

exclusively from verizon. >> and thanks, guys. out there this morning, it is going to be a chilly morning across the eastern half of the country. warm out in the west, but watch what happens as we go through this weekend. we're going to see this all flip-flop a little bit. little cooler out west and starts to warm up a bit out east and always a good flow. keeps storms from developing when it's nice and going from west to east. now, we are going to see temperatures warm up nicely. look at birmingham, alabama. 69 degrees by sunday and temperatures in the 70s in tulsa by sunday and then the reverse of that. seattle on saturday will only top out around 45 degrees and 50 on sunday in medford. temperatures out west will start to cool off a bit. where we have some rain and this front. that's why temperatures are going to drop. rain over to snow in seattle and not a lot of accumulation at the lower levels. take up into the mountains where we could end up with a foot or so of snow and same
