good morning. back in the game. nfl star ray rice looking for a team this morning after a judge reinstated the embattled running back. this as his wife janay rice speaks out about the attack and aftermath. >> he tried to hit me. i didn't want to hear anything. i knew he hit me and i was over it. >> more of matt lauer's interview and rice's chances of getting back on the field. pressing on. dozens of people arrested overnight across the country. angry demonstrators taking to the stores and streets continuing their protests over the decision not to indict the officer in the death of michael brown. mysterious disappearance.

in to the ruling and we are hearing from his wife for the first time. a second chance for ray rice. once suspended indefinitely for hitting his then fiancee in an elevator and now the arbitration let him take to the field again. this comes as his wife janay rice is speaking out with matt lauer. taped before friday's decision. >> we have seen you months after the incident and i can't imagine you were that calm when you started to realize what happened in that elevator. can you describe those emotions? >> i was furious. we came home and we didn't talk the entire ride. i didn't speak to him the entire ride home. he tried to talk to me. i didn't want to hear anything. i just knew he hit me and i was

completely over it. i was done. didn't want to hear anything. i didn't want to entertain it. in my heart, in the back of my >> reporter: the big question now is centering on rice's professional life. will another team make him an offer to suit up? >> coaches are obsessed with minimizing distractions. with ray rice, there will be an unknown. >> reporter: rice won his appeal after arguing the nfl was punishing him twice for the same offense. the nfl first suspended rice for two games in june. upon learning the incident in the elevator and suspended him indefinitely in september after tmz sports released the graphic surveillance video showing rice assaulting his wife. nfl officials argued they hadn't seen the tape and that it was not consistent with what rice told them about what happened. >> the judge said rice had the

videotape and the nfl never asked him for it. >> reporter: now janay rice told espn that she and her husband are relieved by the decision. and in a statement ray rice said, quote, i made an inexcusable mistake. i'm thankful there is a proper appeals process in place to address this issue. a spokesperson for the nfl said the league respects the decision to reinstate rice and acknowledged that ray rice is a free agent based on judge jones' decision, he will be eligible to play upon signing a new contract. this is a setback for roger goodell who has come under scrutiny for his handling of this and other domestic abuse cases in the league. erica, back to you. >> thank you. you can see much more of matt's exclusive interview with ray and janay rice on upon here on "today." meanwhile, police made dozens of arrests overnight as

people were protesting over the decision not to indict darren wilson in the shooting death of michael brown. in seattle, protesters in a standoff with police. in st. louis, demonstrators stopped black friday for a bit. nbc's ron allen is in ferguson this morning. ron, good morning to you. al days of relative rning, peace and calm, protesters returned to the ferguson police headquarters last night. 16 arrested for blocking the street. on black friday, more staged an event there. the wave of protesters surged through the st. louis mall demanding justice for michael brown and more. >> if black lives don't matter, black friday shouldn't matter. >> reporter: urging people to shut their wallets and focus on justice and policy instead of buying more stuff. >> you can shop and learn about civics at the same time. >> reporter: it must be close to

100 people. so far the police are staying back letting them do what they want to do. several hours later, police shutdown the st. louis galleria mall. the call to boycott black friday on social media. twitter hash tags li like #blackoutblackfriday. it shot up in new york's time square and then the magnificent mile in chicago. >> it is silly when people's lives are wrecked every day. >> you have exactly one minute to disburse. >> reporter: in los angeles, a demonstration blocking roads. in seattle, police say officers and protesters used pepper spray outside the main shopping mall. in ferguson, people are hailing this mystery woman seen in the video that appeared on youtube confronting men outside a pizza

restaurant in the middle of monday's madness. the images broadcast on local tv. she is quite a brave soul. here is something that caught our eye. in portland, oregon, a police officer and young boy embracing. the officer apparently spotted the boy and spotted the sign that said free hugs. the boy returned to protesters and the officer returned to duty. we would like to see more of that. >> ron allen in ferguson, thank you. shifting gears now as we look at the holiday shopping season. it is officially in full swing. millions awakened early friday, some did not go to bed, to catch the sales. here in new york, shoppers waited in the cold to get inside the city's most popular stores. a similar scene played out across the country where in some cases traditional chaos ended in

a retail analyst. >> good morning. >> let's start with things you can scratch off your list. the shopper, average american shopper, is feeling better. what items should they go with first? >> they will buy the apple iphone 6. we are seeing a lot of apple products sold. outer wear and athletic is working. watches and handbags. a michael kors store across the street. a lot of those items too. >> is that because they are discounted more than usual? >> they are the most popular items that people want. very giftable. >> for the traditional shopper. folks who don't like to go online. they like the brick and mortar store and they want to touch the item. where can they go? >> macy's. you see at macy's across the board whether it is for millennials or other categories,

it is a wide assortment. >> a lot of discounts? >> discounts, but not deep like last year. we are seeing the promotions and tracking what it was last year. retailers are smart. they manage to black friday weekend carefully. they manage the margins and the promotions. it will be a profitable holiday season. >> which online retailer? >> amazon, walmart and e-bay. >> that is the case year in and year out. and today, as miguel mentioned, small business saturday and monday is cyber monday. what does that mean? >> there will continue to be deals. the holiday weekend, black friday, it started a month ago. retailers were trying to attract the consumer them. >> based on what you are seeing and hearing, are we going to top last year or will it be about the same or off? >> it will be a little better

than last year. overall, for the past ten years, a 2.9% increase. last year was a bit more than 3%. hitting 4% could be an opportunity. >> dana, thank you so much. sheinelle is following the pope's trip to turkey this morning. sheinelle, good morning. good morning. the pope is on a three-day visit to the nation. we have richard engel with the latest in istanbul. >> reporter: in a region torn by war, the pope continues his tour. on a rare papal visit to turkey, pope francis met with the president and strongly condemned religious extremism and persecution by isis of christians in iraq. all forms of fundamentalism and terrorism demean every man and woman and exploit religion.

today, pope francis arrived in istanbul. built in the sixth century, it was a church for a thousand years. the spiritual center of an orthodox christian empire. in 1453, the empire was conquered and sofia was converted into a mosque. today, it is a museum. some turks had threatened to protest, but it didn't happen. the pope was given a warm reception. in a spirit of religious toleran tolerance, the pope visited the mosque praying alongside a cleric stressing that it has been a theater of fractured wars. pope is expected to return to

rome tomorrow. >> richard engel, thanks. this morning, an egyptian court dismissed the charges against hosni mubarak. he was charged with ordering the protesters that removed him from power. the fbi this morning is investigating friday's shooting rampage in austin, texas which targeted key government buildings. the dead gunman who fired off 100 shots before trying to set the mexican consulate on fire. investigators say he was shot outside headquarters. it is unclear if police took him down or whether he took his own life. the faa is investigating what caused a small plane to go down in michigan on friday. narrowly missing a home with two people inside. four people were aboard the single-engine plane. three passengers crawled to safety, but the pilot was pulled out with serious injuries. now to a smash-and-grab caught on camera in michigan. look closely as the driver repeatedly rams his van into a

liquor store. then crawls through the broken glass. police say, get this, the suspect is a local eighth grader who targeted the store before. in september, he made off with $2,000 in alcohol. finally, we were talking about this at the top of the show. hollywood star mickey rourke returned to the ring in russia defeating a fighter half his age. almost too easily leading some to question if it was scripted. rourke is 62 years old and fought against a golden gloves champ who is 29. he said age is not a factor and he lost 35 pounds to prepare. >> i don't know if age is a factor, but hitting is not a factor. >> can we see the video quickly? >> we need to. >> here's my thing. do people pay to see the real fight? >> the guys are really selling

took over market street. their goal was to keep people in the bay area thinking about ferguson, missouri. it started out as a people march but turned violent when the crowd reached the mission district. people smashed windows and blue rocks and bottles at police. at least two officers are recovering this morning. one was injured by a brick thrown at his chest. the other by a glass bottle. people were protesting the grand jury decision not to charge the police officer who killed 18-year-old michael brown in august. police won't have the final number of arrests until monday. >> in the meantime, cleanup for yesterday's protests will be taking place on market street this morning. protesters say they will continue marching in the coming weeks. crowds were smaller here in the bay area this year for black friday shopping from employees to shoppers hunting down a bargain. many told us the crowds didn't seem as overwhelming as in years past. experts say the drop in shoppers could be due in part to the calls to boycott black friday or

apartment on wednesday and has not been seen since. kevin tibbles has more. >> reporter: volunteers handed out flyers near the place where 23-year-old kosta karageorge an osu senior, was last seen. >> we need help. instead of two or three or four people out looking for him, we want hundreds of thousands looking for him. >> reporter: karageorge apparently left his apartment at 2:00 wednesday morning. telling roommates he was going out for a walk. the defensive lineman did not show up for practice that day or at his family's for thanksgiving. karageorge is a three-year member of the university's wrestling team and this year, the 6'5", 285 pound athlete, walked on to the famed ohio state football team. officials say shortly before leaving his apartment, he texted

thanks for joining us. he is anthony slaughter with with a look at your micro climate forecast. >> i am here. we were talking earlier about the rain moving through this morning. we have quite a bit of it in the south bay. overnight, the showery activity moved through berkeley, san francisco, even through the north bay where they got more than an inch at the valley floor. this morning we picked up more than 1/4 inch in san jose. it will continue to come down until 8:00. then cloudy in nature. from south bay to los gatos looking at heavy rain. that extended to morgan hill. today's highs chilly. back to the low to mid 60s. rain with us until about 8:00 with a break here. cloudy skies will be with us all day long and even this afternoon. more showers develop as a series of storms going. this is just the beginning. two more storms to get through over the next couple of days. >> okay. we'll stay with you then. thanks, anthony. >> we begin in san francisco where a huge protest left

businesses and customers shaken up. our chopper was overhead last night as hundreds took over market street. their goal was to keep people in the bay area thinking about ferguson, missouri. it started out as a peaceful march but turned violent when the crowd reached the mission district. people smashed windows and threw rocks and bottles at police. at least two officers are recovering this morning. one was injured by a brick thrown at his chest. the other by a glass bottle. people were protesting the grand jury decision not to charge the police officer who killed 18-year-old michael brown in august. police won't have the final number of arrests until monday. in the meantime, cleanup for yesterday's protest will be taking place on market street this morning. protesters say they will continue marching in the coming weeks. >> crowds were smaller here in the bay area this year for black friday shopping from employees to shoppers hunting down a bargain. many told us the crowds didn't seem as overwhelming this year as in years past.

indefinitely. the question is whether a team will pick him up. kristen welker is in washington this morning with more for us. >> this decision effectively means that ray rice is clear to play and can sign with any team effective immediately. on friday a judge overturned the nfl's indefinite suspension of rice. the judge agreed with rice who argued that he was being purnished twice for if same offense and that he should be reinstated. he was first suspended for two games in june after learning that he hit his then fiancee and then suspended him indefinitely after the video came out. nfl argued that they hadn't seen the tape. we're hearing from rice's wife about that incident for the first time in an collusive interview with matt lauer which was taped before friday's

ruling. >> we've only seen you months after the incident. and i can't imagine that you were that calm when you started to realize exactly what happened in that elevator. can you describe those emotions? >> i was furious. we came home and we didn't talk the entire ride. well i didn't speak to him the entire ride home. he tried to talk to me. i didn't want to hear anything. i just knew he hit me open i was completely over it. i was done. didn't want to hear anything. i didn't want to entertain him, anything that he had to say, any explanation. of course in the back of my mind and in my heart i knew that our relationship wouldn't be over because i know that this isn't us and it's not him. >> now in a statement rice thanked the judge and his wife and said quote, i made an inexcusable mistake. i'm thankful that there was a proper appeals process in place to address the issue. a spoking person for the nfl

shopperi shopp shoppers in chicago. police say a man opened fire on his girlfriend in order strom before shooting him. the woman is still in the hospital this morning in critical kwn. two young boys nearly buried alive in a snow pile are sharing their incredible story of survival. the 11 and nine-year-old boys were playing outside building a fort when they were mistakenly buried be i a passing snow plow. they survived thanks to an air pocket in the heavy snow. rescuers dug frantically to get to the boys who were conscious but cold. >> me and my cousin we couldn't feel part of our bodies. i couldn't feel my legs, he couldn't feel the whole half of his body. >> the boys remain in the hospital this morning. the families say they'll have a full thanksgiving dinner when they get home. mickey rourk is speaking out after his controversial win on

lookout this morning for a brazen gang of bikers riding recklessly and posting them online. as nbc's jacob rascon reports, police are keeping a close eye on. >> reporter: it almost looks like a video game. the youtube video posted a week ago and in it a pack of bikers refusing to pull over or stop at red lights or drive on the right side of the road. there is not much police officer can do except call for back up. the bikers hide under bridges and through pedestrian tunnels. eventually turning off lights and getting away. last month, another video went viral. when a california patrol officer confronted bikers breaking the law in san jose, one told the officer it is not worth it. just go. and he did. >> they are pushing the nfl. where there is a greater risk of
