the second of a powerful one-two punch packs heavy rain and gusty winds. >> let's start with meteorologist christina loren. she has a look at the timing of the rain heading our way. >> i want to start with the rainfall totals. with the saturated ground, the chance for downed trees will be elevated. over 3 everyones of rain in mount tam, ben lomond over 3 inches and some places in san jose picked up over an inch and three quarters over the weekequ.
6:02 am
on-and-off showers today and the heavy stuff comes in tonight. first let's check your drive, happy monday post-thanksgiving, leftovers. that's what i'm thinking about. >> so am i. >> we have some fog. christina talks about the dynamics related to that. a slower drive in patches in 580. here we can't even see the overcrossing but you can see traffic flowing relatively smoothly. we're looking at the golden gate bridge where you have slick roadways continuing from overnight rains. you can see all the way across the span. fog not an issue here. as we look north, there is san rafael. from time to time we've seen the glowing lights be a little worse. we'll talk about your overall
6:03 am
commute in a couple minutes coming up. >> the wet weather causing all sorts of problems across the bay area. from mudslides and downed power lines across the roadway. >> stephanie, there's concern this next round of rain has the potential to be even more destructive. >> that's right. you heard it from christina and from mike. there's a break in activity right now. we're along the embarcadero here. cars have been flying by but the roads are very slick, still slick. we had a lot of problem with that over the weekend. a truck apparently lost control because of the wet roads in san jose just south of 101 and in the east bay, one of our own photographers saw an suv lose control and spin out and seconds later saw a white car crash and
6:04 am
he said he had hydroplane. meantime, mud and rocks after a mud slide there and it's after a tree toppled, taking down power lines with it. >> it made a very big boom and then it brought the power lines with it. but no sparks and no fires. >> it was like dominos coming down. >> and sfo reported more delays than any other airport in the country. delays around one to two hours. as for power outages, pretty steady, everything should be winding down. san francisco with the worst with 50 customers affected right now. live in san francisco, stephanie

6:06 am
700,000 items out of this fulfillment center alone this cyber monday. you're not going to see employees running between shelves trying to pick up items. instead you'll see this. right over here, you've got four floors of this, up and down, blee us and above us, basically oversized roombas. they have 3,000 of these. they're going underneath these shelves living them up. they can lift up to 750 pounds. they're bringing these shelves to employees so people like michael don't have to run around trying to fulfill the order. it says you're looking for that item right there, he pulls it out, throws it into the yellow bin there and that yellow bin goes on a conveyor belt where ultimately it gets boxed and shipped out to you at home. amazon was telling us this new
6:07 am
technology, this is the first time they've had it in cyber monday, it's been in process here maybe about six months but this new technology is cutting down the order fulfillment time from hours downs to minutes and hopefully that translates into more orders this cyber monday. >> we're fulfilling 426 items per second last cyber monday. we think this cyber monday will be even bigger. black friday was busy, the weekend was busy. >> when we asked amazon how much busier do you expect it to be this cyber monday comparing to 426 items per second last cyber monday, they wouldn't give us a number. they just said they hope it's more. and based on the activity we're seeing here on the floor, it's been basically nonstop for these robots, all 3,000 of them and this man right here, michael, who has been working like crazy
6:08 am
to get these orders filled. cyber monday east coast time has been in full swing for hours now and west coast just starting up. >> bob's got to watch his step. if you're not careful, you turn around and you're face to face with a throne dvd set. >> and one thing you will need is your umbrella. a little break in the storms right now. >> from cyber mania to weather mania now. maybe a reprieve for the time being but you're tracking another system sweeping through our area. >> another potent one. looks like another potentially another one to two inches on the valley floor before the week is finished. i want to start with your radar picture. it's raining out there in parts of the bay area. nothing too heavy but you will have to use your windshield
6:09 am
wipers from time to time, on 101 from know vnovato all the way s heavy stuff throughout tonight into tomorrow and then we'll get a little bit more of a break on thursday, more rain on friday. we need it, it's a great story to tell. it's just going to come in pretty heavily. the east shore 57 degrees. we been consistently getting these storm systems. but coming in, it's rain like we haven't had in six months, potentially a year. we had some good rain in the north bay back in april into may. count on temperatures in the upper 60s, bring your umbrella. soupy conditions for today. light hit or miss activity. as we meet back here tomorrow morning, i stop that clock for
6:10 am
you at 9:00 a.m. heavy rainfall again. we tap into that atmospheric river and that translates into heavy rain right here in the south bay. it's going to strengthen as we head throughout tuesday afternoon, heavy rain for a good five to six hours. tuesday night, still getting that moderate rainfall, continuing to wednesday, rain stays with us. as we head throughout thursday, a little break. rain returns, though, by friday. i'll let you know what the models are projecting. it's what we need to get out of the drought. >> the cliff note version of christina's report, watch out for the next few days because she's very excited, which means a lot is happening. here we do have the backup. metering lights turned on at
6:11 am
5:39. all lanes are filled at the toll plaza and your approach. we had a crash west 24 approaching 580 that just cleared from the lanes. west 24 slows down to the warren freeway over to 580 and clearing at the berkeley curve. 580 shows slowing in both directions approaching the 680 interchange. there may also be fog there. so be careful. west 580 not so bad through livermore. we have more traffic flowing through that direction through the tri-valley. the dumbarton bridge is expecting to siexpect ing to see a little more slowing but not so bad right now. we had west 580 with fog and low clouds, a little bit better visibility.
6:12 am
here's one last shot of san jose. there's the slowing at 101, it's jammed right at 680. we'll get the latest update from chp. this could be a bad start. we'll see if it ripples down. >> exactly. especially for a monday. >> a welcome back to work monday. >> seasons greetings. clearing out the jungle. san jose preparing to shut down the largest momentle lehomeless in the country. >> and the supreme court looks at just how mean can you be on facebook.

6:15 am
storm windows still open. we just don't have a storm approaching the bay area just yet. big one arrives as we head throughout tonight into tomorrow with heavy rain continuing through wednesday. we're going to drive right by thursday before rain returns on friday. overall we're going to see the weather we need here in the bay area. and this morning we're hearing more from janay rice in an exclusive interview. she opens up about the night her husband punched her in the face, knocking her out in an elevator. >> and police trying to get a better description of a man who
6:16 am
shot a man right in front of buster's cheese steak. >> and leaders will post signs to warn hundreds of homeless to start clearing out of the jungle. they'll have 72 hours before crews will go in and force them out thursday. the jungle, near story road in san jose, is the country's longelon largest homeless internment. >> laura, when you make a deadly threat, that's not protected by the first amendment, right, whether you do it on facebook or in person or on the telephone, doesn't matter. not protected. but here are the big questions in front of the supreme court. but the question is who determines what is a threat? a fellow posted really awful things about his wife on
6:17 am
facebook, things like there's one way to love you but a thousand ways to kill you. here's another he posted after an fbi agent visited him. "little agent lady stood so close, took all the strength i had not to turn the agent into a ghost, pull my knife, flick of the wrist, slit her throat." bottom line, is he a criminal? this whole thing is a federal case because it happened online and thus involves federal law. >> other news, the faa last week released a report about how drones were interfering with pilots and airports. we took a look at some of the data, could only find two reports from the bay area. one serious, a drone crossing right in front of a runway in sjc.
6:18 am
the other kind of irrelevant, a pilot reporting seeing a drone over a reservoir. we'll watch this, what is a threat from a drone and for that matter, what is drone is. >> certainly it's becoming u k ubiquitous. you see them everywhere. >> and crews try and clean mud and debris from the storm. the storm dumped more than an inch of rain in malibu, triggering this mudslide. >> for the most part, the weather has been a huge boone to the area. time to check your forecast as we give you a live look outside from the san bruno mountains. are those dark looking clouds or just because it's dark in the early morning? you probably have an answer. >> we still have some spotty
6:19 am
showers out there this morning. that will be the weather story of the day. it's 6:18 now. we had a lot of rainfall over the weekend because that storm window opened wide up and we had a couple storms roll through. i can tell you, no storms right now but the window, my friend, is still open. here is one of the best stories that we have. this picture from one of our viewers. tammy rains, coincidence, i think not. she sent us a picture of coyote creek, which was flowing over the weekend and will likely be flowing as we head through the mid section of your week with a lot more rainfall over the area. we picked up over a foot of snow. some of the ski resorts over 11 inches of snowfall, that is good news. and grab your umbrella, have it handy throughout the day today. we are seeing is some fog. so keep that in mind, especially
6:20 am
if you're going to be traveling through livermore or headed out into the central valley, either north or south through sacramento or bakersfield. 51 degrees. good morning to you in the south bay. 57 degrees in san francisco. you know, i've got a really good story to tell for those residents in the south bay where we typically get that rain shadow. this next system is coming from the south. it's tapping into that atmospheric river. i stopped that clock for you. when we meet back here 24 hours from now, 6:00, heavy rainfall at that point in the south bay but not a lot of activity at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning in the north bay. everything will continue to move from south to north as we progress throughout your day. we're talking about maybe six to eight consecutive hours of heavy rainfall, which could produce some damage across the bay area, especially areas of poor drainage and areas where the fallen trees -- this heavy rain
6:21 am
continues tuesday night into wednesday morning and finally clearing you out by thursday. first we want to check your drive and say happy monday to mike inouye. >> happy monday, christina. to greet us, they froze us. let's look at your map. it is jammed up. traffic just starting to move a little bit better. there was a crash that's just cleared the roadway. chp says you should see smooth and flowing traffic as that builds. slower drive north 85 approaching 87 where we had an issue. now we're seeing a recovery again as that volume builds into downtown. more flowing traffic than last week but not as much as a typical monday. so we'll see that restoration continue. but this will be a big problem as well. the dumbarton bridge crashed, overturned vehicle blocking the slow lane. westbound is jammed from the
6:22 am
flat section toward the mid span area. chp said it's going to take at least half an area to get the right crew there. use the san mateo bridge to the northbound. that will jam to the next 40 minutes. so there's a big note for your westbound traffic. 880 is a bit through hayward. look at the tri-valley, 680 toward pleasanton and sunol. livermore doesn't look quite as bad as it did earlier this morning. a slower drive but still smooth for west 84. the bay bridge toll plaza, we see the backup building all lanes back to a normal pattern. we had a slower build here and no problems across the golden gate bridge. you see the sheen here. visibility is all right but we're watching for fog as well as. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. the time is 6:22. dangers inside of your baby's

6:31 am
commissioner's actions that followed. kris sanchez is live with a preview for us. >> reporter: i think it's interesting to know on the "today" show that janay rice says she saw the video of her husband dragging her out of that elevator, she will never watch the video inside the elevator, the one that shows her husband punching her, nothing her out cold. despite the violent video, espn reports a number of teams are showing an interest in the running back. his wife is sticking by his side. rice is speaking on the "today" show about an arbitrator's decision to lift her husband's indefinite ban. the arbitrator said the league was wrong to ban him twice. he was suspended for two games but then when the second video
6:32 am
surface,s that when roger goodell suspended him indefinitely saying the suspension didn't happen in the first police because rice was ambiguous about what happened. on the "today" show this morning, she said she can't say that the commissioner is telling the truth about that and that the league's action had everything to do about it protecting herself. as for her husband knocking her out cold, she said her first thought was that she was through. >> i was furious. we came home, i didn't speak to him the entire ride home. he tried to talk to me. i didn't want to hear anything. i just knew he hit me and i was completely over it. i i was done. i didn't want to hear anything. i didn't want to entertain it, entertain him, anything he had to say. of course in the back of my mind and in my heart i knew that our relationship wouldn't be over because i knew this was not us and was not him.
6:33 am
>> nbc obtained a memo from the nfl to the team owner saying in no part does the arbitrator question the commissioner's honesty or integrity when he imposed that suspension on ray rice. janay rice also adds there was no excuse for what happened, that it was all fueled for alcohol. >> the former fbi commissioner is going to come out with a report with how much roger goodell knew and when. that will be interesting. >> time to take a look outside at the beautiful bay bridge this morning. the sun is trying to break through those clouds. >> you see it peeking from the distance. how long will it be there is the question. >> because the rain is coming. >> we really, really need it. it's a welcome story. good morning to you. especially for our farmers in

the central valley, all the way from fresno to bakersfield. we had rain over the weekend, heavy at times. and for us here in the bay area, there's quite a bit more on the way. this next system will make its way all the way to southern california as well. but this morning it's just starting to come in. we're just getting some very light activity as a result. not only are we going to see rain for the next couple days, the chance for thunderstorms is looking really good. that could help us really get our rainfall totals up but it does have some problem whenever we get that active weather in the bay area, we are talking about some dangers. for today, temperatures 50s to start, on our way to the upper 60s and low 70s. 67 degrees for you, 69 on the peninsula and the same for us here on the south bay. let's talk totals for a moment just to give us an idea of what's headed our way as we head throughout this week. these are some whopper numbers. look at this. over two and a half inches expected in woodside, on the peninsula, over two additional
6:35 am
inches of rainfall on the way to san jose. maybe an inch and a quarter in livermore. and up in napa, maybe 3 inches or just under. overall, this next system is going to be a south bay event first. i'll show you the timeline. first want to get you out that front door. it's a monday, back to work. >> here walking about what is a south bay event right now and that's the commute, which is building much heavier than it was last week. this is north 101, just starting to show recovery over 680. we had a crash which took about 20 minutes to clear from the roadway, north 101 at oakland road is now clear. you see the slower drive moving over toward the airport, as it's a typical pattern. the volume is heavier than last week. a big problem west 84. that's the dumbarton bridge. if you're heading from fremont over to the facebook side of that bridge in east palo alto, you have an overturned vehicle blocking one of your lanes just
6:36 am
to get by. big distraction, big slowing. we're looking at west 237 at your alternate. there is that san mateo bridge. the bay bridge toll plaza, a pretty typical build there but 92 will be a heavily traveled bridge right now. >> all right. pretty busy out there. >> yeah. >> back to work. >> welcome to reality. thank you very much, mike. >> right now sluggish holiday sales and european stocks on the slide. >> let's check the numbers with scott mcgrew. >> we can go straight to the big board this morning. indeed the disappointing black friday sales are affecting some stocks. the broader index, dowell industrials down 53. from the big board to big airlines, emirates airlines starts flying its a-380 into sfo today. lufthansa and another airline already do this. now, this airplane will land at

highway has very good irrigation. so it backs up a lot. >> we see this particular collision a lot every rain day. people want to keep driving as fast as they normally do to get to their destination, but they got to slow down. >> the other problem spot was in marin before the waldo tunnel. a mudslide sent rocks and debris down on the slow lane of 101. and in san francisco, crews had to make hard to make repairs near infantry terrace where a free fell, taking power lines with it. yesterday the busiest travel day of the year for many airport. sfo reported the most delays of any airport in the country. weep got an update from the faa saying there are delays for arrivals averaging about one hour. so it continues. we'll get the updates throughout the morning.
6:47 am
>> thank you, steph. speaking of christina. >> ooh. >> a lot of aggravated air travelers. now we're through the holidays and more rain. >> yeah, which is good news for our agricultural people. this is the kind of rain that we need. it's heavy rainfall, it has an atmospheric river association. really, you want to keep those rain boots, that umbrella and your overall gear ready to go throughout the week. even today, spotty on-and-off activity you can see it's rather soupy out there this morning with a mostly cloudy sky through your coast, all the way across the inland bay area. temperatures mild to start. we are on the warm side of the next system that moves in as of tonight. as it starts to chug closer and closer to the coastline, you'll notice some spotty activity. this is what we're working with as we head throughout the next couple of days. starting tomorrow, bouts of heavy rain just about all day
6:48 am
long. then we're going to see a little bit of a thunderstorm as we head throughout tuesday afternoon, better chance for wednesday morning. it's a rare occurrence, as you know. we could actually see pea-sized hail, gusty winds in excess of 50 miles per hour in the bay area, where we don't typically get those conditions. the nbc bay area storm team is ready. we've been watching this for you all weekend long. right now just some light activity. you might have to lose your windshield wipers every five to ten minutes at a time this morning. i want to show you the overall picture. we have the jet stream right where we need it to be, two potent storm systems lining up and you see this rich plume of white. this is the atmospheric river that we talk about. the low pressure system and atmospheric river will come together and this will turn over to the heavy, rich moisture
