tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  December 2, 2014 6:00am-7:01am PST

6:00 am
it's going to get worse before it gets better. >> good morning to you. this is the radar right now in the south bay. we typically get that rain shadow effect from the santa cruz mountains. not today. i'll tell you how much we're expecting where you live and when more returns to the forecast. >> as christina said, we don't usually get that much rain for the south bay. but look, we're getting that much rain. it's a rainy tuesday. we'll talk about the trouble with traction as well as flooding coming up. >> it's coming down across the bay area. take a look at this live look across foster city this morning. we're tracking the storm for you on this tuesday, december 2nd. this is "today in the bay." >> announcer: nbc bay area news begins with a microclimate weather alert. >> thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. right now our doppler radar is lit up with all different
6:01 am
colors, plenty of green, yellow and even orange. that indicates heavier rain coming in this morning, sitting right on top of the bay area region. >> the rain causing problems from oakland, across the bay, golden gate bridge, all the way down the peninsula into the south bay this morning. >> and we do have a team in place as we get you through the day to tell you what you need to know this morning to be safe. our crews set up all across the bay area. we're going to begin with meteorologist christina loren. she is tracking that rain right to your doorstep. >> good morning. not envious of our reporters out there this morning but, hey, you've got to get out that front door as well just to get to your vehicle this morning and heavy rain. you'll likely need that umbrella just to get to your car. we've got that heavy stuff all across the board. as we head throughout your day today, this is going to continue through lunchtime. we'll be done with the heavy, steady stuff and then we might actually get some pretty strong
6:02 am
thunderstorms. over the santa cruz mountains, up the peninsula and up the north bay as well. basically our ground is saturated already. once the wind picks up, the chance for downed trees is enhanced. we are now in the thick of it. this is the heavy stuff that's coming through and it will likely continue for the next few hours, potentially all the way through noon. we'll have more on that and that thunderstorm formation we're expecting. now back to you, sam and laura. >> we're going to bring in kris sanchez this morning. she's live long highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: good morning to you. the rain drops are big, fat rain drops, the kind that will get you wet all the way to your elbows if you don't cinch your jacket just right. that's making for a dangerous job behind me.
6:03 am
we see a lot of folks driving a little too fast for the conditions. though i will say, the last few minutes the volume has picked up and folks are finally starting to slow down. the flashing, the roost eer tailing coming off the back of the cars, that's another reason to give yourself extra time. here in the santa cruz mountains, though, we are watching for saturated ground that could lead to some downed trees that could bring down power lines potentially. we're also watching for trees that could potentially fall on anything here in the santa cruz mountains and also around the bay area. you are going to want to dress warm. we have felt the temperature drop in the last couple of minutes. again, these are big, fat rain drops. they are super soakers i'm going to call them. and as christina says, they're
6:04 am
going to be around most of the day. sam and laura, we'll ask you to put on an extra pot of coffee and we'll want to warm up. >> and a new set of clothing for you. >> i was going to offer you hot chocolate but we can do a pot of coffee. >> i'll take whatever you got. >> and a live look at the drive through san jose this morning, downtown. mike inouye has been tracking all of the problems and there has been many of them with your morning commute. and the best ways to move around. he'll join us in just a minute. >> let's turn things over to bob redell this morning. there were reports of a tree down. bob? >> reporter: yeah, we're just about a couple blocks, we're on woodside road, highway 84, just a couple of blocks off the downtown area. what you have is this oak. it's kind of hard to see.
6:05 am
if you see the lights beyond the road, you have the tree down. the fire department is next door. we were talking to the firefighters. they heard a large crack, kaboom about an hour ago. they said it's a 100-year-old tree. part of it came down and blew a transformer. that's the reason pg&e is out here and has shut off the power. they said it wasn't wind related. just the fact it was wet. there were black spots on this oak, there have always been these spots on this oak. they think the water got in there and did it in as far as doing what it did to weaken the tree and have it fall down. right now we're waiting for caltrans to come out and cut down this tree. we'll talk to mike later as far as how you're going to get around this. the power is out in the
6:06 am
immediate vicinity. there's fire station 7. you'll notice they have power on but that is emergency power since they need to have it as emergency first responders. you get the sense of how close they were. again, no one was hurt. the power is out here. we're waiting for them to clear this large oak as the rain continues to come down. it wasn't wind related, it was just a lot of water, a lot of moisture. something we haven't been used to for a long time now. >> those trees will be a concern today. thanks, bob. >> the drive meantime across the bay bridge very slick this morning as we take a live look at the poll plaza right there. so many people waiting in line. can you almost barely see it through the drops on our camera out there. certainly be careful, give yourself a little extra time to get to where you need to go. we're see things like this all over the bay area. this, in fact, is video from 101
6:07 am
near south van ness in san francisco. we're told several cars have lost control in that area. our own stephanie chuang keeping an eye on that for us. we'll talk to her in about ten minutes. >> we'll check on the golden gate bridge, take a live look outside and see how things are shaping up there. if you're out your door or soon out your door, you're going to want to know what's the rain going to be look in my area? >> good morning to you guys. it's going to be rainy all across the board. nobody spared this morning. make sure you're ready for that. consider the fact it has been raining heavily now for the past hour or two. and our roadways are certainly showing that. we've got a lot of ponding, a lot of puddles out there. you want to take it easy. let's talk about some of the success we've seen from this rainfall so far. the last time we had over an inch and a quarter of rain, back in 2012. that's in san francisco. if we get the inch and a half we're expecting today, this will
6:08 am
be the most rain that we've had since 2009. so unfortunately it's coming in right in the heart of your morning drive. i can tell you right now it is such a good story to tell and a lot of this is moving offer the drought-stricken south bay. we'll tell you how much we're expecting and when we could see thunderstorms coming up right now. here's mike and your drive. >> i want to show folks, the radar we're used to looking at with the weather, let's look at the shot. we're not used to seeing this. there's a lot of rain coming in through the south bay. we don't get as much rain as other parts of the bay. there's 101 northbound. this is 101 north of 680. the blue highlighted for 85, that's more ponding with the rain. likely having flooding reports through downtown, though we haven't had really any for 87 this morning, though 280 did have some.
6:09 am
237 getting all the rain as well. typically see flooding reports through milpitas. unusual slowing for the tri-valley, unusual slowing in both directions from danville. big puddling across the sycamore valley road. we haven't heard of any lane closures there but look at that blue. we get a wider shot along the peninsula. big puddling and ponding as you're approaching the bay bridge. metering turned on typical time this morning, puddling at the toll plaza itself. a smooth drive, however, across this span. the golden gate bridge also has a crash going on on the north side. we can't see it here but reports that car went up on to the sidewalk portion as folks are traveling to the area. you're going to see flashing
6:10 am
lights. the driver did sound like they were adjusting there for at least minor injuries and you saw the conditions on the bridge. it's soupy, tough to see there. make sure your wipers are in good condition and use them. >> good advice. allow extra time. >> it does notnd here either, guys. we have complete team coverage all morning long. if you visit nbcbayarea.com and click on the weather tab, you'll find our live interactive radar. again, that's all on nbc bay area.com. >> we're all talking about the rain. there are other headlines this morning, including a sidewalk showdown. the vote that could ban bicyclists from using walkways in san jose. >> a disappointing black friday and cyber monday was not that
6:11 am
good as well. so are people getting presents? are you getting coal? >> it's important to stress, be careful. the entire bay area seeing more rain than it's seen, christina is saying, since basically 2009. what you need to know heading out the door next. >> closed captioning provided by mancini's sleep world triple bonus mattress sale.
6:12 am
6:13 am
i want to give you an idea of how much rainfall we've accumulated just since midnight. over an half of an inch right here in the south bay and even up in the north bay, point reyes up to 3/4. this is just from this morning. you see your doppler radar lit up like a christmas tree this morning, my friends. rain continuing all the way
6:14 am
through noon. we'll tell you how much more we're expecting today before we get another round tomorrow. >> lit up like a christmas tree but not making the commute very merry this morning. we have wet roadways all over the bay. so many crashes, i can't call them all out. i'll give you the spots to watch coming up. >> here are today's top stories for you. the san jose city council will decide today whether to ban bikes on sidewalks downtown. many pedestrians have complained about having to dodge cyclists on the sidewalks. cyclists say they're just trying to avoid traffic on the streets. >> nearly one month after an election, it appears the race for san jose mayor is officially over. sam liccardo will officially be declared the winner today. challenger dave corteze did
6:15 am
concede the election earlier. >> a new proposal is being considered today. the municipal transportation agency will discuss reducing fees for taxi drivers so they can better compete with the likes of szuber, side car and lyft. >> another sill i con valley company is set to ipo. >> scott, this has really caught your tension. >> this is not a facebook, it's not sexy at all. it's a software development company. my eyes are glazing over looking at that. the reason we care about what this company does in its financial papers is it shows it's worth far less money now than when early investors were pouring money into it. companies don't usually become worth less as they approach their ipo. so here is the point. what the market does with this stock in the first few days of
6:16 am
trading is going to tell us a lot about the appetite for risk and maybe just how bubbly we can get in silicon valley. if you care about the tech boom and the bay area economy, horton works is going to be a nail biter. >> and watch this guy and his company, lending club. it has filed papers for an ipo. it's in much better shape. could be the biggest ipo since facebook. easily going to be in the top five. >> and finally, let's talk the cyber monday numbers. growth less than expected. at least the numbers grew compared to black friday when the retailers said there was no growth at all. so what's happening, sam and laura, are people no longer buying presents? it's not that. people are buying. they're just not buying when stores tell them to, when the media tells them to, when we give the day a cute name. they're just buying whenever they want. so on their smartphones on red light. i'm declaring today do what you
6:17 am
want and stop listening to what people telling you what to do tuesday. >> wait a minute, today is giving day on this philanthropy day. >> good point. >> the rain is already causing some major headaches for drivers. >> christina has been busy tracking the storm and all the radar this morning. stephanie chuang will join us now. steph, the rain has really been coming down. it's flooding out there. >> absolutely. the chp started a flood log about three hours ago. there have been regular reports from antioch to redwood city up here to san francisco. one problem spot is the 101 central freeway. where you see this section, you see the water coming down. there's a drain that's supposed to help bring the water down so it's not flooding up there. but something maybe is clogged,
6:18 am
the water is coming down other parts of this structure. we drove this section earlier this morning to show how crazy it can get. large splashes of water, i drove, it was hard. you could feel yourself losing control of steering and the risk of hydroplaning very real. the chp says several vehicles have already spun out in this section but they continue to go on and the good news is there have been no crashes here. beware of the sprays that comes from splashing trucks and cars because it can temporarily blind you. there are large standing pools of water. anyone going too fast, you have a great risk of loses control so definitely take care out here. >> it's really coming down out there. taking a light look outside, look at san rafael, s-curve out there. you can see the sheen out there on the roadway. you have to allow extra room for
6:19 am
drivers. >> those puddles could be in the inches. that's because we have received that much rain over the last couple of days. >> and all those falling leaves and there are a lot of them. it looked like confetti falling through the air. i can tell you that is problematic, especially places where you've got clogged drains. those are the places where we are expecting flooding this morning. because the rain is really starting to come in now and the heavy stuff hasn't even arrived just yet, we are concerned. we're expecting those storm reports to continue to go up. you saw stephanie out there live. looked like she was out at a water park this morning. it is just that wet. i can tell you right now with so much rain coming in, you see how our radar dips to white? it's actually messing with our radar this morning. we're making calls. make sure you're ready for some of the heaviest rain we've had in years, especially here in the south bay. you can see this orange coming in. that's going to arrive in
6:20 am
livermore by about 8:35. you, too, will see the heavy stuff. that batch is what we're watching for. that's the heaviest round, after which time between 12 and 5 we'll start to clear you out. as that system tries to nudge in, we'll have a lot of potential for thunderstorms. we are on our way to about 63 degrees, isolated thunderstorms, especially over the santa cruz mountains. we have a better thunderstorm chance up in the north bay. mount helena also, you want to watch out there. san francisco, you could see strong thunderstorms develop later on this afternoon as well. stronger storms are capable of producing pea-sized hail, gusty winds and brief downpours. best chance of 12 to 5 we're expecting thunderstorms in the bay area for today. tomorrow we'll see another round of heavy rain but most of this rain will stay to the north of highway 9.
6:21 am
on-and-off showers continue through wednesday afternoon and maybe a few thunderstorms tomorrow. the chance looking okay but i think this afternoon is actually looking better with all that instability, all that moisture and atmospheric river coming onshore. for us that means high rainfall totals but it could make for a really, really difficult drive. bad day for the bike, i would definitely say that much, mike. >> not a good day for driving. look at these conditions. here's oakland. the camera trembling a bit as the breeze is coming in here. that will pick up and with the rain-soaked hills, we're worried about trees and branches down during the course of the day. we'll look at the bay bridge toll plaza where a lot of these taillights will end up. look at the water streaming down on the roadway and causing an issue for drivers. but we have a stronger meet are drive. the map shows you where there's
6:22 am
blue, there's a big amount of ponding and puddling. it does look like folks are taking their time, at least a little bit more so. look at the peninsula. a lot of flooding roared, 101 through san mateo. we're looking through the south bay and really getting hit over the last hour. now we have puddling and ponding reported all offer the south bay. 101 and 87 and 85 showing a build as well. not so much ponding reported over the tri-valley, but look at the water kicking up, rooster taling on cars, and that will be an issue as well. but calming down by 8:30. that will be an issue for folks going to school. look at that water kicking up as well. we talked about schools. around the school zones, it's going to be tougher to see with that rain falling, use extra caution today.
6:23 am
folks have begun walking through the area. they'll have their head down. a strict amount of caution through the school zone. be very careful. >> up next, a massive air bag recall expanding this morning. >> and of course more weather updates to bring to you. this a live picture outside. it's in richmond at the san rafael bridge where our cameras are still splattered with drops of rain and that will not be changing any time soon. mike and christina will have the latest for you right after this break.
6:24 am
6:25 am
6:26 am
japanese manufacture are takata has expanded it recall. it previously limited the recall to states with humidity.
6:27 am
takata will testify at a congress an hearing tomorrow. >> and feeling the brunt of this latest storm system. right now you're looking outside, a live picture at fremont as being are making their way to work. >> we'll have coverage to help you get out to work if that's where you're headed. that's coming up next.
6:28 am
6:29 am
heavy rain, strong winds pummelling the entire bay area right now. it could get worse before it gets better. >> it likely will. showing you your active radar this morning, this is what you have to drive to work through. after we get rid of the heavy rain, we've got thunderstorms coming your way this afternoon. lots to go over in your microclimate forecast just moments away. >> and we don't get a break from the wet roadways.
6:30 am
they stay wet all morning long. we'll show you where the latest flooding reports and where you have to work around coming up. >> a lot of liquidity this morning as we check the nyse and offer on the nasdaq as well, we're keeping our eye on apple and taser coming up. >> this is a live picture of the bay bridge. today is tuesday, december 2nd, and you are watching "today in the bay." >> announcer: "today in the bay" begins with a microclimate weather alert. >> good morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm some brock. our live radar right now is all lit up, a spectrum of colors. can you see green, yellow, even orange indicating heavy, heavy rain pounding the entire bay region right now. >> let's take a live look outside, morning drive through san rafael and across the golden gate bridge on the right, very
6:31 am
slick, take it slow, especially with parts of san francisco already seeing heavy flooding right now. huge puddles of sanding water to drive through in van ness. we'll check in with stephanie in about 15 minutes. >> and we'd like to bring in bob redell, who is in woodside where a large tree has gone down. though it's probably the best care scenario, we understand. >> reporter: well, in the sense that no one got hurt and in terms of the power being out, the pg&e person says it may be affecting only five homes, which includes the fire department, but they have an emergency generator. the issue is -- >> it looks like we might need an emergency generator ourselves. even the weather affecting a lot of our live shots this morning, some of the audio and pictures.
6:32 am
we'll check back with bob in a little bit. >> we certainly will. let's take a live look outside and see what else is going on, not just in the peninsula but the entire area. the bay bridge perspective from emoeryville on a socggy tuesday morning. >> it's been a busy morning. >> it has been but this is the kind of rain we need to help take that big deficit down when it comes to california's historic drought. the chance of our having mandatory water restrictions in the whole bay area was looking rather likely before we got into the past couple months. but as of this morning, we're actually looking pretty good and as a matter of fact, we're at average rainfall for san francisco and that hasn't happened in offer three years. this is the most rain we've had in years, my friend. bouts of heavy rain for this morning. winds will pick up this
6:33 am
afternoon and that's when we have the best chance for thunderstorm formation, specifically between 12 and 5:00. this evening we'll see another wave of moisture come through. on-and-off showers will continue during your evening commute. this is what we're dealing with now. the moderate to heavy rainfall sweeping quickly across the bay area with more of that heavy stuff on the way as we head throughout the next few hours. then between about 11:00 and 12:00, showers should start to wind down but we've got a lot more moisture back here available for thunderstorms. we're going to talk about that coming up. right now, as you can imagine, it is tough right there. if you have your loved ones with you as you're going to school, make sure you're careful. mike inouye, if you had your loved ones this morning, you would be taking it easy. >> we try to but we can't account for everybody's driving so everybody trying to be
6:34 am
careful. 101 very soupy here. look at that glow. the water is kicking up off the roadway. even though it may not be actively raining where you are, the rain is an issue kicking up on your windshield. here the rain on the lens and on the roadway but the metering lights are on and you can see the lanes are slow by these lights. now we really see the slowing down through hercules, all the way through richmond and the berkeley area. it's a slower build this morning because folks seem to be driving a little more slowly, as you should, with those conditions out there. now yellow on both sides of the peninsula, east bay 880, same thing through the tri-valley. west 237 we often hear reports
6:35 am
of flooding coming out of mi milpitas. we haven't heard our usual suspects as far as any flooding on that roadway but we do have the build. i was told by tim, our friend who works over at the desk. he said coming over from santa cruz, a lot of wet roadways and a lot of puddling for highway 17. we're looking at a live shot now. this is unusual. san jose tends to get a lighter volume of rein but right now falling on the live shot here, wet roadways, slick on and off ramps. >> san jose airport has reported there are two flights cancelled, one delayed already this morning because of the weather. of course if you're flying out, check ahead. >> that's good advice. we are a collection of colors today, blue on your map, christina's radar lit up in green. lots of it. we hope there's green for investors today, too. >> the markets have been open
6:36 am
for about six minutes now. let's check the numbers with scott mcgrew. >> reporter: good morning to you. i hope you were listening earlier when we were talking about taser. the dow industrials up 43 points. we were talking about taser earlier this morning. they're up 7% this morning. taser makes the police body cameras and president obama had recently ordered a quarter billion dollars in money to equip police departments with body cameras all over america. they make the over the ear model. trading up 7%. >> my goodness. thanks a lot. ray rice's wife opens up about the night he punched his fiancee in a casino elevator. >> the only thing i can hope for is a second chance. >> coming up, what life has been like since the attack and where
6:37 am
ray rice hopes to go from here. >> where do you go from here? probably allow a little extra time this morning. a look at golden gate bridge. rain pounding the area. a lot more in the works. 6:36.
6:38 am
6:39 am
>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." >> it's 6:39 on your tuesday morning. a live look outside downtown san jose. not too many cars there, plenty, though, on the freeways, battling some tricky conditions.
6:40 am
we'll check in with mike in a few minutes. the "today" show airs an exclusive interview with former football star ray rice talking about a fight in an elevator and the video that changed his life forever. >> i still got to live every day, go take my daughter to school, she's going to grow up and the way the internet works now, she's going to google her father's name and the first thing that's going to come up is -- who knows what's going to come up. that's the reality of it. and that's what i'm more worried about fixing is that i want my wife, my daughter, my family to -- we all want to just gravitate -- we all just want our lives back. >> it could be an uphill climb for rice, who says that he takes full responsibility for his actions and he hopes people will give him a second chance. in an interview that aired yesterday, his wife janay says she has never seen the video of
6:41 am
rice punching her in an elevator and she never intends to. she also said it's the only time rice has ever assaulted her. >> an arbitration later today may determine when nfl star adrian peterson will play again. he's appealing goodell's suspension without pay for the rest of the season. he believed his suspension was supposed to end when his child abuse case was resolved. he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges. >> we have our own storms we're battlin battling. >> we're getting word there are up to four-hour delays at sfo. and a couple of flights have be been cancelled as well.
6:42 am
coming up, christina will tell us where the rain is coming down the hardest. >> rain outside the bay bridge toll plaza. we are not prophetic here. we are just seeing rain on our cameras. our crew is keeping an eye on the conditions.
6:43 am
6:44 am
. >> announcer: now 15 minutes of continuous news, weather and traffic on "today in the bay." >> and we start this block right now with the "today in the bay" microclimate weather alert. right now our doppler radar lit up with all different colors, representing different intensities of rain that's caused severe flooding and strong winds, toppling trees all over the bay this morning. >> a live look out your window right now.
6:45 am
san rafael across the bay bridge, all the way to the peninsula and down palo alto seeing a slick drive right now. >> we have a team in place to help up get where you need to go safely. our crews are set up across the region. we begin with kris sanchez, who is live near the summit long highway 17. you recognize her because she's been soaked, all geared up this morning. how are the conditions looking just now? >> reporter: it seems the rain is letting up just a tad. the bad news is so is the traffic. you see a steady stream of cars here behind me. a lot of those folks are driving perhaps a little too fast for the conditions. they're not allowing much space in between the car in front of them and as we know from the chp, they say that can help to avert a disaster in dangerous situations such as the ones that we are seeing right now. other than the roadways, we're also watching for some saturated ground that could give way in the form of a mudslide or
6:46 am
landslide. we're hoping that won't happen but we know it is a possibility given the fact that we've had so much rain in the last couple of days. we're also watching for any trees that could be upended because of the saturated ground. we saw early this morning lots of rain on the roadway. there is definitely an accumulation. we had the good fortune of not feeling any sort of hydroplaning as we were making our way out here from san jose this morning. we know especially around the on and off ramps that there can be an accumulation. as you're headed out the door, be sure to give yourself plenty of time and distance from the car in front of you as well. give yourself room to recover if you do have some difficult driving this morning. as far as what to wear, put your hair in a pony tail and save that time, stop and get a hot cup of coffee because it is a chilly storm. i don't know what christina's gauges are saying but out here we can tell it is a bit colder than we're used to and the rain
6:47 am
is still coming down nice and steady. so whatever rain gear you have, get it ready to go because it is going to be wet. back to you. >> poor thing. you're so soaked, too. no wonder you're cold. >> all right. we're waiting for you with some hot chocolate. let's take another live look outside. this time from the south bay this morning. it was interesting because kris said it was letting up where she was but it is still certainly coming down. christina has been monitoring the storm for us this morning. >> yes, she has. stephanie chuang and bob redell out there as well. rain totals keep getting higher and higher. >> it's good news. now we're getting delays at sfo. sam is right on the money. we need this rain and we need it badly. timing not so great. let me show you the picture, give you an idea of what we are working with. we're getting these heavy rains of rain. lets up and another round of
6:48 am
heavy rain. the heavy stuff concentrated around the tri-valley and the east shore. as i widen out for you you can see there's more along the way and we keep that atmospheric river coming in. the story just gets better, my friends because this storm is going to ride all wait down the state of california, bringing much-needed rainfall all the way to the desert. palm springs and palm desert getting some rainfall. our totals have already been impressive. we're at average when it comes to our yearly rainfall in san francisco. we haven't had that in years, my friend, so that is good news. the best chance of thunderstorms between 12 and 5. and as we head into this evening, showers off and on.
6:49 am
we're going to keep that wet weather going all the way through the end of the week. wednesday, thursday, friday looking pretty good. you will be able to get outdoors. today is going to be the heaviest. tomorrow we'll cut that rainfall in half. by thursday on-and-off light activity that will continue through friday and finally getting a dry break but not until this weekend. we need the rain, we'll tell you how much we've accumulated at the end of the show. >> we are bracing for all things wet weather right now. this is to give you a peek outside at your drive through san jose. you can see it starting to tighten up a little bit. slick conditions and more drivers hiding the roadway. mike inouye is keeping a close eye on the roadways. we'll check in with him in just a minute. >> let's bring in bob redell. he's in woodside where crews will try to remove a large tree that fell and is blocking part of a road.
6:50 am
