everybody at home, you made it through the hardest part of the historic storm. we want to let you know where this storm stands in history. really what you want to keep in mind is there's a lot of aftermath out there. you're still going to find areas where you have debris on the highway, downed limbs, branches, you want to take it easy out there just trying to get to work. we're not only going to see more rainfall today, not to the magnitude we saw yesterday by any means but today they'we're talking about thunderstorms. and let's check your drive and all the trouble spots. here's mike. >> what you're seeing is not smoke from fires -- well, it is fires, it's flares over here.

they're telling you to get off the road here. the map will talk about the most significant amount of flooding that we still have on the roadways affecting highway 101. the bay shore freeway is closed in both directions between willow avenue and marsh road. you're forced on and back off of the freeway. there will be possible reroutes. kris sanchez is en route and she may have an update. we have flooding reported, i have circled it over on the right side of your screen as well. we just opened three for lanes and now four more lanes are open if you're traveling north.

you see the roadways are drying out. we have still some rhett roadways. there's a little flooding reported around the dublin interchange. we'll enumerate a lot more issues. rye now the only closure is 101. >> pg&e crews are making good progress on a slew of power outages through the bay area. estimates show close to 3,400 outages bay areawide. no place was immune to it. season the christmas tree in the square went dark. now around the city people simply trying to find ways to pass time in the dark. >> we've been talking about sports from sports to broadway plays to taking a train down to

southern california. >> full cultural spectrum there. pg&e says at least 150,000 bay area customers lost their power at one point or another during yesterday's storm. meantime take a look at this. a power line in san leandro. crews were there with a new pole yesterday trying to restore power to those impacted. >> it's 4:34 right now. a safeway roof caved in. shoppers were inside the store when the roof came down and people had to run for safety. the security guard ran in to help. >> the sliding doors came off the tracks, i looked in and the

whole left side of safeway was collapsed in. >> it was a 50-foot section of roof that collapsed. no word on how long it will take to actually fix it. >> meantime on the peninsula, firefighters needed a rescue boat to help people vacate two flooded mobile home parks. the downpour there started at 2:00 a.m. there yesterday and simply never stopped. fire crews rescued at least 25 people from their homes. another two dozen or so got out on their own. >> it's just wet. the water is raising. we had to take all our pets out of the house because we don't know what's going to happen to them. >> some people had to wade through water with their little umbrellas there. some people had their pets on their backs. firefighters assisted in those pet rescues. >> everybody thankfully able to make it to safety.

marin county had some of the highest rain totals in the region. the rain washed out highway 1 in the panoramic road area. >> we have staff that have been here about 25 years and no one ever remembers any flooding down here at all. so this was unexpected, not something we could have sandbagged or predicted. >> employees used fans to dry out the wet areas but the city is going to have to shell out for a new pump and repairs for other damages as well. >> emergency crews certainly stayed busy across the bay area trying to just stay ahead of the flooding. >> which is no easy task in berkeley. the rain combined with high tides submerged several cars. in the south bay normally quiet rivers turned suddenly

dangerous. two teen-age boys in san jose went missing when they were rafting in a creek. rescue crews found them safe last night and took them home. and in santa cruz, an 11-year-old boy is recovering when a 70 foot cypress tree landed on him, pinning his arm and shoulder. the boy is okay. >> another great way to stay on top of all of this is by your phone with your nbc bay area app. you'll find live radar and alerts about winds, flooding and outages as well. flooding certainly a major concern on the roads this morning. mike had mentioned it. in fact 101 has been shut down all night on the peninsula, i

believe northbound. >> kris is there. it's a major problem and certainly poses problems for the morning commute. >> one of the eeriest sights as a reporter is to see a highway all blacked out and that's what we have this morning. the northbound lanes are completely shut down pause of the flooding between willow and marsh road. we have seen some traffic in the southbound direction. they were hoping to have the highway reopened by 5:00 this morning before the true brunt of the morning commute. massive flooding there. folks were just spinning out and stalling and not heeding appropriate driving speeds. no one could have expected what

that freeway was going to look like. it still shut down. the detour, it's a doozy. we were supposed to be with you earlier this morning but we got rerouted quite a ways out. if you wait about a half hour or so, hopefully 101 will be open once again. if not, you are going to be rerouted. we talked to a chp officer who was at the front end of the blockage, he said he was shocked at how fast people have been driving, barrelling towards the flares, the cones and signs without regard to whether conditions allow for that. we asked if he's seen a lot of spinouts and he said "you have no idea." we'll take his word for it. >> it a good idea to visualize what your detour quite possibly could be. we get into such a habit of the way we drive.

>> you do need an alternative today. especially when you talk about flies through those zones, not a good idea. >> the roads are still slick out there. we got some impressive totals yesterday. >> we really did. there are potholes out there. you really want to take it easy out there today. thank you so much for waking up with us. it's friday. let me remind you, it's friday. we made it this far together. we made it through an historic storm system that some people haven't experienced in their lifetime here in the bay area. look at some of the totals. over 6 inches of rain in belmont hills, boulder krecreek, losalt

hills. this is what blows my mind, 4 inches of rain in downtown san jose. until we get done with today, we will not be able to tell you whether or not we hit that decade mark, whether or not we've had more rain in a 48-hour period since the past ten years. that's all i'm going to say for now. as we head through the day today, a little bit of thunderstorm activity definitely on the way, especially at the coast. you're fair game for that. as we head throughout tonight, things are going to start to let up but if you want to get over to tahoe and experience that fresh power, i have a couple words of caution for you. i'll let you know the best time as well to beat the crowd. we have the inside scoop, doesn't we, mike? >> we do. i'm going to take two of those

words, mine are chain control. kris just talked about that the reroute is much more rigorous. you are forced off the freeway at marsh but from what i understand you're able to get off the roadway but then get back on using the loop that they have there at the off ramp. a smoother flow of traffic on the southbound side but there is a rebound. just north of milpitas, there's flooding as well. our fremont camera shows a nice, easy drive north from mission boulevard and heading north. you also see a little spray from the cars. i just drove through here.

but the roadways themselves, better tracks, much better visibility than yesterday. we'll show you the smooth flow of traffic. get ofrg toward the bay bridge, no big deal. flooding still in many patches of the bay. 101 is the only freeway closure. because it is a very thin hillside there, they have to build it back up after the rainy season. it won't reopen until 2015. >> which is crazy, but that's only a couple of weeks from now. >> well, march, that's a few more months. >> march. >> still ahead, women left injured and unconscious in a mall parking lot. what investigators are trying to piece together this morning.

police are trying to figure out what happened to a woman who was found unconscious in the parking lot of a popular east bay shopping mall. police found the woman at the livermore outlets. she was taken to the hospital with life threatening head injuries. investigators aren't sure if she fell or was hit. the woman was on a business trip. >> senate lawmakers are expected to vote today on the trillion dollar bill that will keep the government running. while an agreement means the shutdown is averted, lawmakers on both sides don't seem particularly content with this bills, especially democrats who say they caved too much to gop interests. >> this is exactly the way i don't want to do business. >> what in the world are my

peninsula. this will be the story of the day. as we accumulate that daytime heating, the chance for thunderstorms gets better and better. this little area is going to move on shore and bring us a pretty good round of steady rainfall. i'm tracking this to reach the bay area at about 6:00 this morning. temperatures mostly in the 50s right now. we'll see a nice comfortable day. it will be cool out there. coldest air of the season so far, 56 degrees is your high, for example. that's your high out on the east shore with a few thunderstorms. and the same for us here in the south bay. 55 degrees up in the north day. now, if you want to get to tahoe, like we said, snow level has fallen to 4,500 feet. you know the snow is so important when it comes to getting us out of the drought. 60% of what feeds into our reservoir comes from snow pack. so this is what we need to dig out of this historic drought.

we need historic snowfall, which is just what we had yesterday. first i'll send it back to you, sam and laura. >> 4:51 in the morning. rain here means snow in the sierra. this is the scene last night, cars struggling to get any traction whatsoever on those slick roads. caltrans put chain restrictions in place. >> this is a big backup. you can't plow through it, you have to wait. this is 101 on the peninsula. flooding closes the freeway this morning. we'll talk about the progress and give you the local update for your commute on the peninsula coming up.

at 4:55 now on friday morning, taking a live look outside, the illuminated bay bridge looking nice, clear out there this morning. we'll check the forecast after that massive storm yesterday. as a result of that, we do have some problems on the roadway this morning. >> yes. drivers not having a problem over the bay bridge but 101 is causing problems. >> the sea of cars here north 101 approaching willow still there. we're looking toward this live shot and we see the flashing light, the arrow moving you over to the off ramp.

it's flooding across the bay shore freeway. you see this stretch between palo alto and menlo park and on the south end of redwood city. the rekroroute, it takes a whil kris sanchez says. chp says they're sending folks who help remove the closure. it should take folks a few minutes to get there to escort folks off safely. lane is closed northbound 880, couple of them out of milpitas and fremont. the bay shows a light volume. it 4:56, just before 5:00. we'll see how this day shapes up. traditionally friday shows a lighter day of traffic as well. we'll give you a live look with
