gauge how that weather is affecting your community all over the bay area. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. everybody at home getting that heavy rain at this point. the one exception is up in sonoma county, this is a very slow moving system. as we head throughout the day today, we're expecting downpours. things will relax a little bit but we have some thorpgs on the way as well. we guide you and start that clock for you at 8:00 a.m. rich downpours, you'll need the umbrella and need why are jacket for today and can see showers not as steady but still coming in. you'll still need that umbrella. but then the rain returns, another storm on the heel of this system and then another one after that. i'll tell you how much rain we
5:01 am
expecting out of all three systems combined. as you know, we have that technology here in the bay. >> we like that technology. we're very technical friendly here. no one knows about the threat of flooding more than those displaced from last week's storm. this morning they're bracing for the possibility that rain could return to their communities. bob redell is in redwood city where people are cleaning up their homes from the rain days ago. >> reporter: good morning. according to the forecast, it sounds like they should be okay. people who live here in the lamar trailer park and r.c. mobile home park here know that their properties have a history of poor drainage and they also know that the area behind them has a tendency to flood. so their fingers are crossed they don't have a scene like they had over the past few days. you might recall during that
5:02 am
massive storm that we had last week, the parks flooded, several homes ended up having to be red tagged, about 200 people had to temporarily evacuate. friday they were furiously pumping out of low areas of their park. friday those who could return did return and they are back home, the ones that were not red tagged. if the rain gets worse and you live here on the peninsula in the san mateo area, the red cross is opening a flood shelter, it will be opening up at 11:00 this morning. it will open at the gymnasium at the college of san mateo between 11 and 7 today, tomorrow and wednesday. reporting live here in redwood city, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> maybe sure you download our app for your iphone or android

5:04 am
seen standing at one of the windows holding up a black flag with an islamic creed that declares allah as the true god. that's one indication. we also have video of some of the hostages escaping. there's the flag. so that was what they had seen hostages hold up. we also have video of there you see the hostages running out, this woman into the arms of police in full tactical gear who surrounded the cafe. word is five hostages have been able to get out so far and the gunman has demanded to speak with prime minister tony abbott. >> this is a very disturbing incident. it's profoundly shocking that innocent people should be held hostage by an armed person claiming political motivation. >> reporter: a large part of sydney, especially downtown where this is all unfolding, is
5:05 am
on lockdown. hostages claimed that the gunman indicated there were two bombs planted in other parts of sydney. it is a very fluid situation and we will have updates throughout the show. laura? >> quite frightening to see the look on the hostages' faces coming out. as we track this breaking story, we'll have another live update in about a half hour, as well as the latest of how washington d.c. is reacting to the situation. of course when we're not on the air, you can get the very latest on nbc bay area.com. we're also on facebook and twitter. >> michael brown, sr. spoke last night in san francisco. he appeared at a baptist church for a discussion on racial injustice. he called for social and political change. many speakers talked about the

growth of recent problems with police enforcement, underscored by what's perceived to be a pattern of injustice against men of color. >> we have a major fight going on. we have to stand up. that's all i'm doing is standing up for our right. we love the bay, we love all of y'all. enough is enough and we got to stand strong together. thank you. >> michael brown, sr. told the crowd how much he appreciated the recent love and support from the bay area. the event lasted more than two hours and was peaceful. >> yesterday protesters took to the golden gate bridge to protest the death of michael brown and eric garner. >> similar scenes in san jose as well. protesters gathered at city hall wearing all black and prepared
5:07 am
signs. then they marched to the city's park event where they held what they call a die-in. >> and crowds gathered in front of centurylink field and that frustrated some of the fans trying to get into the stadium. other fans say they understood. >> then the game did start and it was another painful one for the 49ers. the 49ers lost to the seahawks, effectively eliminating them from any playoffs. >> i think they got a little cocky, they got a little full of themselves in my humble opinion and i think that they just took advantage of the fact that they had all this new stuff and they thought they were going to be able to ride that. i think if they reach deep down
5:08 am
inside, they'll realize they were not prepared for this year. >> if the 49ers had captured a postseason berth, extra games would have brought in extra cash for area businesses. madeline flanders works at levi's stadium in the team store and she said she was counting on postseason games to help boost her paycheck, so she was geese to have to wait until next year on that one. >> let's check the microclimate weather alert. the rain coming down once given. this is just a series of storms we're having this week. >> yes. we're going to have a little rain each and every day this week. the good news is it's kind of spread out so it's not going to come in all at once. the system nm p coming in now looks much more significant than the systems on the way this week. hard to tell whether it's going
5:09 am
to be two or three. they don't have to break apart. however, we're able to gauge these systems pretty well. i can tell you right now we're going to be dealing with this rainfall for the day. we stop the clock at 8:00 a.m. at that point getting rich moisture all across the board. if you're someone who drives to work, you're in a good place today. if you take a bike, have to wait for mass transit, you have to wait through pretty heavy downpours. between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., the sky opens up. still waves of moisture moving on shore so keep that umbrella handy. by the evening into tonight, a much calmer situation, we'll have light showers lingering with another wave on the way for tomorrow. temperatures again will end up in the 50s. the system has some instability with it. we might actually get some thunderstorms. best chance over the south bay
