3% jump if you look at the numbers compared to last year. why the jump? people have more money, consumer optimism and it doesn't cost nowhere near as much as it used to to fill up your gas tank. you're looking at $2.55 for a gallon of gas in fremont. that represents a drop of 30 cents from a month ago. these overnight numbers compiled by triple a. on the left side you have the current price on the right side it's what they were 30 days ago. analysts, at least, predicts gas prices to drop another 10 to 20 cents by christmas day. if you are headed to the sierras, keep in mind there's a weather advisory in effect.

could being for residents. residents are not quite so sure. >> jerry: good morning sam and laura. chevrolet says it all has been normal so far. this was not the case here yesterday. take a look at the pictures posted on social media. this was caught on camera. substantial flair-ups. the health department's hazardous materials team was on scene monitoring the situation as of late last night, though we haven't seen them here this morning. that's according to the contra costa county supervisor. he says the clearing was not normal and that chevron had trouble in a unit and had to shut it down. no one's gone to the emergency room for problems related to

>> movies studios are worried about google. >> some of these we knew, sam, and some we didn't. the internal e-mails are teaching us more. they show us that the movie studios, under the umbrella -- what is unusual is how close the two sides, the studios and the state seem to be working together. for instance, mississippi state attorney jim hood who sent letters to google, which google and the "new york times" were able to prove weren't written by him, they were largely written by the mpaa.

jose at that point, it will just be getting going by 9 to 11 a.m. as we head into 1 p.m., it heads into morgan hill and gilroy, pressing south of 92 between 11 and 1 p.m. there's your day. things are going to start to really dry out after that. if you're sick of the cold weather, good news, really good news for you. we've got a really good warmup on the way. so 59 today, up to 67 by monday and 69 by tuesday, looking good for your outdoor activities next week. maybe you have the week off. it's going to be fantastic for you to get outdoors and do whatever it is you want to do. one thing i like to talk about whenever we get into the holiday season, helping out the bay area, showing your bay area friday. here's the thing. if you're going to adopt a dog, you want to make sure you're in for it for the long haul or a

police in fremont hope this photo will help them find the people behind a home invasion earlier this week. police say the man and woman seen here are considered persons of interest in this case. the two were seen in the neighborhood on tuesday, the same day a couple forced their way into a home. they reportedly threatened their way into a home demanding money and designer purses. >> marcy alexander kept everything she needed for her chemotherapy treatment in her bag, her medication, her favorite blanket, a journal and an ipad filled with photos. after her treatment on tuesday, she and her boyfriend stopped for some lunch. they say when they got back to their car, a window was smashed and the bag gone. >> smashed out, took both or bags, my chemo bag and his bag that he brings all his stuff in while i'm doing chemo and it's

state. bay bridge there on your right. the backup is there. we'll check in with mike in just moments. christina, tracking the rain to your door stop. mike watching the roads getting to work or heading out of town. we'll check in with them in moments. >> in washington, the congress gone. today the president is going to tie up some loose ends before he heads off on vacation for the holidays. tracie potts joining us from capitol hill now. the president has plenty to discuss and address before he leaves. good morning. >> reporter: no question about that. this lame duck president whose party has been swept out of power seems to have a full plate, and he'll talk about that with the media in just a few hours. today president obama is expected to address opening relations with cuba. the state department says change will happen quickly. >> we're talking about weeks. days or weeks, certainly not

months. >> reporter: but can the president convinces new republican-control congress to lift the trade embargo? >> it's a terrible trade-off. >> the president considers this to be a serious national security matter. >> reporter: the administration thinks but won't say publicly that north korea is behind the sony hack. >> the u.s. government is actively considering a range of options that we'll take in response to this attack. >> reporter: immigration and the secret service could come up today. the independent panel's report is out. they're recommending a taller fence at the white house, more agents, more training and a new director. >> there a number of things we can and should do to improve the way the secret service conducts business. >> reporter: plus the combat mission in afghanistan will officially end, while washington is on vacation. now, there's another thing that could come up today, too. remember the russia/ukraine

conflict? well, the president just this week signed off on possibly -- not a done deal yet but possibly more sanctions for russia. at least he's giving the u.s. power to do that if it can't be worked out. >> tracie potts live from washington, thanks for that update. >> we take a live look outside, this time from the south bay. everything's been washed off recently by all the storms we've been having. and another one is heading our way. christina is tracking it. >> that means you might have a real fire in your fireplace this christmas. you can always have the yule log going as well. check that out on demand. you can see live radar showing you. that front is moving into sonoma county. we do have pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall. they're very, very small,

embedded within this deep green here. it's going to slowly press out as we head to the next couple hours. by 7:00 or 8:00, we're starting to get a little activity to the areas of highway 92. we'll be mostly dry in the south bay. that will change as we head out to about 8-11. we're talking about a mostly dry bay area. the storm is going to slowly move out and as it does, it's going to transport a little more moisture over the bay area. as we head throughout the rest of the weekend, though, mostly dry conditions. a stretch of dry weather and a warming trend coming your way. saturday into sunday temperatures look good for outdoor plans, 69 degrees by tuesday. that's going to be a nice day to get outdoors. you'll get close to the 70s by wednesday of next week in san francisco but then that storm window swings right back open. and i always like to keep you up to date with what's coming your way.

a good 10 to 15 days out, if i can. i have a fair amount of certainty of what's coming your way. coming up in just a moment, if you have to gets out that front door, a couple trouble spots and the good thing is mike's all over it. >> we're looking at the roadways because we expect a very light pre-holiday week ending friday. fremont does show a good amount of direction. i wanted to show you the flag flapping at the bottom of your screen. that breeze is coming in. i'm told there's gusts at time. chp says just hold on there. picking up a little bit of volume now. 6:35 we typically see more traffic flow but it being a friday, there's a lighter volume there. it's not a major concern, a typical pattern there across that san mateo bridge. same thing into union city.

it's just the volume starting to build a little bit, tending to bring those averages down a bit. farther north and toward american canyon, we have reports of some sort of debris or assault vehicles, west 80 and highway 37. no details there. i want to show you guys how things are shaping up. the toll plaza is full. you can see the glowing lights, kind of a soupy look there. that mist and drizzle may play a factor. the meteoring lights were turned on. we did see a rush of traffic getting there early. >> in early or out early. >> or maybe they're going to have a very, very long meeting after lunch. off site. >> thank you, mike. it is 6:36 right now. the markets are recovered after getting hammered earlier in the week. >> oh, boy, did they recover yesterday. let's check the numbers now with scott mcgrew.

welcome back, everyone. more horror and tragedy in australia this morning. eight children were found dead inside a home ranging from 8 months old to 15 years old. investigators have not said how they died. the woman who is the mother of 7 of the children and related to the 8th was found stabbed. she herself is in serious condition this morning. investigators have not identified any suspects yet but they don't think the public is at risk. >> australia's prime minister released a statement calling the incident horrific, coming on the heels of the hostage taking earlier this week.

>> cars that are 11 or more years old often lack key safety features lacking in new models. studies say they know most parents can't afford a new car but they urge them to get a car with the most safety features. >> experts say the quake fault below one brown valley neighborhood is moving at a never-before-seen rate. that's taking into account fault systems across the world. the fault sits below 20 homes hit by the last earthquake. they say the fault could slip near 3 to 6 inches over the next few years and is unprecedented. >> flames lighting up the night sky and reigniting fears for

at 6:44, a developing story. neighbors in richmond uneasy this morning after seeing this. it looked like another fire at the chevron refinery. ch chevron says it was routine

flairing. >> how health officials are responding this. stephanie, what are they saying today? >> reporter: health teams were tasked with being out here. the county says ground monitoring has picked up elevated of particulate matter, though not enough for a shelter in place. t chevron says the flair enables the company to safely shut down a unit and release team, which can look like smoke. the company said there was visible flairing to allow for equipment depressuring. flairing is part of refinery operation. still, that was not enough to provide assurance for those who live nearby. >> no alarms even went off. that was kind of strange. there should have been a

warning. >> and you can see a sizable flair caught on camera by some people in the area posted up on twitter last night. at last check this morning, the main hospital emergency department is not seeing a surge in patients related to this flairing. you can check the particulate matter levels yourself on their site. i checked a few minutes ago, it doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. the county continues to monitor the situation here and will alert residents if the particulate matter levels become hazardous. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> let's take a live look at our doppler radar. it is active now. you can see all the green activity coming up. i think christina says the north bay will see this first as it

makes its way down south. >> that's what it appears to look like. san rafael on your left and san jose on your right. feeling the brunt of it. is it a slow moving storm this time? >> it's a quick mover. those of us watching us right now, you're probably the ones getting outdoors. we're going to see most of the rainfall before we hit 11 a.m., after which time we start to clear out. by 2:00, that's when i'm thinking most of the bay area will be mostly dry. but sam, laura, so close to the holiday now. you may be wondering because our weather has been so active lately, what can you expect for christmas day? here's the deal -- you'll see rain today, it will clear out tomorrow and then it will be nice and dry for several days. but then we're going to warm you up maybe till wednesday and then cool you off, another storm

system coming through on christmas. it does look like it will be kind of cloudy and cool. we will stay dry through next week. we're going to talk about some science in just a minute and give you a good look at the extended outlook. none of this has really moved past 101 yet. 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., the steady rain expected to be draped across. between 9:00 to 11:00, it moves to areas to the north of 92. we'll start to see a little impact in the south bay as well. then between 11:00 and 1:00, we move to morgan hill and then just spotty rain throughout the even. then you can ditch your umbrella all the way into next week. by wednesday we'll continue to climb.

by thursday, christmas day, temperatures stop to drop off, back into the low 60s. here's the thing, i'm watching out a good 10 to 15 days. by the 30th the storm track returns, that window swings right back open and look at how much moisture is about that time. i am expected to get hammered yet again between the 29th to the 30th, that's when it will start up and this will continue into the first week of the new year. for those of you off next week, this is what we're leading back with for the first of january. let's check the drive. mike has all the particulars. hi, mike. >> good morning, christina. we have this particularly heavy backium backup on the bay bridge. it happened with the metering lights turning on. look at your map. we're talking about no problems

down the upper east show freeway, a little slowing, just below 60 miles per hour. christina's talking about that rain coming in. and some slick roadways left over from the last week of rain as well. over here the tri-valley westbound looking very smooth through livermore. we do have reports of metal debris, a couple of flat tires from what i understand, out of the lane. east bond it will be a factor. reporting from sunol, we'll talk about a lot of traffic flow. so stand by for that report. the rest of the bay looking very light. a little slowing down through fremont but nothing really dramatic for this northbound direction. peninsula 1301 through palo alto shows an easy drive as well and across the san mateo bridge

looks smooth. we had an early burst of traffic, as you might expect, and then things calmed down. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. christina has been talking about how quickly a lot of this water has been flushing through. people right now living near a flood-prone creek on the peninsula are hoping a new web site will give them an early warning of any possible trouble. the web site would show a map of the creek and use a color-coded system to indicate the likelihood of flooding. red would indicate the flooding is expected, yellow means it's possible and green means everything is okay. the web site would warn residents of a flood two hours in advance. there are still a few kinks to be worked out in this system but officials hope to have it up and running by early next year. >> it's 6:51 right now. another quick peek outside at the golden gate bridge this morning. a little wet out there. traffic not too bad. we see it picking up but things will no doubt pick up across the bay area.

a lot of people are hitting the road for the holiday. >> absolutely that time of year to see family and friends. "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us. rain not likely to slow some folks down. good morning. >> reporter: if you are headed out of town later today, the roads are going to be crowded, more people on the roads this christmas season than ever before according to triple a. as you mentioned, they're going to be wet, christina predicting that rain to be coming in mid-morning and continuing throughout the afternoon. once you get out of town, you have to deal with this, i-5 north, a wind advisory. highway 50 into south lake, 3 to 6 inches of snow, and doner pass snow and ice on the road above 6,000 feet the next two and a

half weeks is typically the busiest time of the season. they expect this year to be the busiest they've been over the past through years. >> because of this early dusting and storps we've had, it's been a good thing for us. >> back to the road travel. plummeting prices at the pump is a big reason why triple a is expecting record numbers on the road this holiday season. more than 12 million californians will be traveling by either car, plane or train. that's a who are than 3% jump if you compare the numbers this year to last christmas. and we're talking about the gas. here are the overnight numbers compiled by triple a. in san jose and oakland, around 2.80 a gallon, san francisco around $2.93. one analyst is estimating gas

prices could drop another 30 cents a gallon by christmas day. >> that would be good news for commuters. >> helps on the pocketbook. okay, taking to tinder, not to date necessarily but to catch a thief. >> san francisco startup says thanks to that matchmaking app, it now has a good idea who has been stealing computer equipment from its office. it's kind of funny they took to tinder. >> we've seen people go on social media, facebook to call people out. to go on a dating web site to find a thief? that might be a first. there is a company called build zoom out of san francisco. they noticed computers were disappearing. they went the traditional route looking through surveillance video and they saw a woman they say is not an employee. you can see her wandering into the office, which has an open floor plan and taking things from a desk there.

since the summer, she has stolen about $30,000 worth of mac pros and tablets. the company says with that high-def picture, they were able to put out an appeal on plblogs and social media. that's when they decided to get creative, posting her picture on the dating site. >> i said, wait a minute, if we put it on tinder, thousands of people will know her name. >> reporter: within two days of posting that picture on the app with the caption "i rob offices in sf and" and a $5,000 reward identifying me."
