6:49 am
king tides to worry about. if you're visiting town, quite a phenomenon to see. we'll be looking at the potential for flooding. that's the unfortunate thing. if you are a resident of the bay area and you've been here for some time, this is no big surprise to you. we get this every time the seasons chang and especially when you get the moon and the sun out of that gravitational pull, that's what we'll be looking at today. high tide comes around 10:00 this morning, tomorrow right around 11:00 but, again, if you're visiting town, it's quite a phenomenon. you can head down to the embarcadero and see the waves splashing up, it's quite a sight. in oakland, you're looking at very dense fog. this has been one of our foggiest commutes all morning long. mike will be back to talk about this. that fog is causing up to an
6:50 am
hour delay at sfo this morning. the rest of the country, no problem, just here. it's only because of that fog and the low clouds out there. look at these numbers, we're going to be looking very comfortable and uniform, back into the mid 60 for the north bay and san francisco. we'll see sunshine. it's just going to take a little while to get here. the patchy morning fog will be here at least until around 11:00. after that i think everyone will see the sun. here's the deal. we do have rain in the forecast. showers are expected to arrive just in time for new year's eve. high pressure is in control right now but over the course of the next two days, that high pressure will sag to the south, storm track will come from are the north and wednesday night we'll see our first shower come from the bay area. it will be enough to cause problems if you're traveling locally, even if you're trying to get up to the see air rarks expect heavy snow wednesday night into thursday. the system will not produce
6:51 am
heavy rain for us in the bay area, just light shower activity. while we are expecting that rainfall thursday morning, we will see sunshine thursday afternoon as the clouds pour out of here. we're talking about 50s for daytime highs on thursday. to give us an idea how unimpressive the system is, we're only talking about trace amounts. that's good news, not a huge storm system. we doesn't need any more rain right now. we need time to dry out. keep in mind wednesday night and thursday morning. let's talk to mike now. he's tracking serious stuff now. >> clearing a lot of the rocks and debris. the hillside getting us a great shot. you'll see they've made really great progress. the hillside slipped down across the roadway blocking two lanes. now they may reopen one of the lanes but they're going to at
6:52 am
least keep one of those lanes closed until daylight when they can reassess the entire area and make sure the hillside is safe and done sliding at least for the time being. we're watching for that and progress. this jam is blocking half your freeways. once you're south of there, get to the golden gate bridge. fog is an issue here, low visibility. shows you what the north bay shows you on our map. basically down toward spencer avenue, a big, tough drive. it's clear you want to take that ferry into san francisco, it's a great opportunity for to you do so. that's a slow drive for 101. there's not really a great alternate around that unless you go back across the bay bridge and back across the bay. the metering lights are on, as well as through oakland hills. we have a big, deadly crash here, highway 4, it's an issue for local traffic control.
6:53 am

6:54 am
extra alert. big city police departments and unions are telling officers to wear bullet-proof vests and avoid posting inflammatory remarks on social media. though there is no evidence so far that there are any imminent threats to law enforcement officers. we spoke with the santa clara university counseling psychology professor who says rising anger among police officers is understandable, especially with the concern of, quote, lone wolves like this floating around. >> i'm sure the emotions are high. it does seem kind of escalatory. you have the police force under siege in a way, at least emotionally. >> the san jose police officers union says its response is to show solidarity by sending several officers to new york city. they are working now on that
6:55 am
move. officers told me this morning they'll be wearing a stripe across their badges like this, again in a show of unity with their fellow police officers across across the country and in new york. usually this is something local they do on their own but the they did authorize this for the officers for new york city. >> the governor recently signed into law a bill requiring day care inspections get posted online so parent can compare different facilities. this comes about a year after our investigative unit teamed with the center for investigative reporting and exposed that little information is available for parents who want to know about a day care's inspection history, past violation or safety issues. so we did it ourselves, posting all inspection reports on nbc's web site for napa county and santa clara county.
6:56 am
after our reporting state lawmakers took action revamping the state site to include this information for every county. >> now you can get this information online. we've seen the improvements in the last year. >> it's significant how much has changed in a short amount of time. >> this evening at 11:00, we'll take you inside the system to show you how children, now better protected but also how child advocates say that even more needs to be done. if you have a tip for our investigative unit, police give us a call or send us an e-mail. >> wall street had a shortened work week this week. >> and scott mcgrew knows all about this. but we're seeing a resurge gent market in the last couple of days. will we carry this to this week? >> it looks pretty good. we're looking at about an

6:58 am
overnight car fire. this is cell phone video of the latest fire reported after 3:00 in the morning on sunday. on wednesday you'll recall four cars were found burning near delores park. those are being investigated as arson. >> a road rage suspect is taken to the hospital after police used a taser after him. they chased the suspect and said once he gout of the car he wouldn't comply with their orders so they tased him. >> and the largest tides of the year are bringing the threat of coastal flooding. they're called king tides. they bring higher sea levels due to gravitational pull. the king tides will stick around until tomorrow and they'll be back again in a month. >> let's bring in anthony slaughter for a final check of the weather. good morning. >> the sun is starting to come um over san bruno mountain. in san francisco it's very patchy fog, very isolated.
6:59 am
later on you will all see the sunshine. and temperatures will be very comfortable, back in the mid 60s. >> we look comfort. the question is anybody even out? >> yes. we have a lighter volume, but here the hillside came down, so two lanes blocked southbound 101 in spencer, right near the waldo tunnel. and we look to the bay bridge where we have the backup. the nothifog is affecting your of the roadway. you can still see enough for a safe stop ahead of you. and fremont south 880, one crash reported and it just moved off to the shoulder around mission boulevard but it's enough of a distraction to slow you down
