nguyen, in nor laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. tracking a christmas eve storm towards the bay area bringing with it rain, strong winds, as well. >> let's take you outside, live to look at san francisco, drive across the golden gate bridge and downtown. good morning, anthony. >> good morning to you both. what you saw was better images of what you can make out from the skycams, because dense fog is impeding the view. and you try to look at some of the skycams, completely black this morning. while we have skycams, some of them inoperable because of how thick the fog is. it's the thickist from the north bay from vacaville from santa rosa, salsa lito. just updated as 6:00 hour hit. dense fog across the south bay. san mateo bridge, completely fogged in this morning. visibility down to less than a quarter of an hour. san jose yesterday, we couldn't see anything. you can make it out perfectly

fine, this monthing christmas in the park. cloud yoevz head. the next storm system making its way. time line, by 11:00ing 12:00, we'll see the first showers across the north bay, by 1:00 k 2:00, they'll push into the golden gate bridge area, san francisco, oakland, east bay tri-valley. by 3:00, 4:00, south bay towards santa cruz mountains. yes, rain to deal with and then the wind will move through this evening. right now, mainly cloudy skies and that fog out there take it easy, if you are traveling here this morning. back to you. >> great. thank you. >> two police officers were hurt when they ran into a burning apartment complex to rescue a person inside. it happened after midnight. near country club drive. a spokesperson says the two officers suffered smoke inhalation but should be okay. the person who lived in apartment is being treated for minor burns. three units damaged and 14 people are out of a home this

morning. >> we have an update to a developing story. protests erupting overnight after another police shooting in berkeley, missouri, miles away from ferguson. the over responding to a gas station for reports of someone stealing when an 18-year-old man, reportedly, pulled out a gun, pointed it at the police officer who then opened up fire, killing the man. during the investigation, officials say up to 300 people began protesting near that scene. some throwing bricks and explosives at police officers and their cruisers. one officer hurt when he was hit in the face with a brick. police ended up arresting four people. >> despite a call from the mayor to temporarily halt protests in new york, demonstrators still gathered in the city to protest police killing of unarmed black men. hundreds of protesters marched through manhattan last night, some holding signs saying, jail killer cops. new york city mayor de blasio asked for protesters to hold off

on demonstrations until after two officers were laid to rest. that didn't happen. vice president biden plans to attend the funeral for ramos. ramos and his partner were shot while sitting in their parked police cruiser. funeral arrangements for lui will be made once his family arrives from china. police plan to send represent everybodies to the services. the man who shot the officers later took his own life. 6:04. reaction is mixed this morning, following fda's recommendation to lift a lifetime ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood. gay men who have not had sex for a year can donate. the plan was put into 1983. gay rights advocates pushing forring a change in policy said while yesterday's recommendation

is a step forward, it's still discriminates. >> not based in current technology and science. it's based in fear from generations ago. >> a screen based upon behavior for everybody and then when they test the blood afterward they can have that assurance. >> a lifetime ban is not necessary, given advances in hiv testing. the time of year the red cross wants to remind everybody, it's the season forgiving blood. a holiday drive through the start of the year to boost bay area blood supplies. donors are welcoming but the red cross is in need of o negative, a negative and b negative blood. two events taking place this morning, one at hilton double tree hotel in campbell and another at the stone ridge mall in pleasanton. >> toy drives also going on right now it's a final push to bring christmas cheer to kids in the bay area. >> yes, easier to give toys than

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live at lefty o'doul's in san francisco where the toy drive is under way. 6:05 a.m. but, where you are, seems like it could be p.m. hours. >> reporter: there's a lot of activity going on. hard to hear you guys. lefty o'doul's is happening now. these adorable christmas carollers, some of my favorite tunes, bringing back childhood. the point is 10,000 toys, they need. we have maybe a hundred here. joining me, cheryl, mo magic, some of the carollers singing. talk about the program. >> mo magic a collaborative of service providers in the western edition. we've got project level, magic zone and giving toys out to the housing development. we are focused on western youth but san francisco all around. kids that don't have as much as others. >> talk to us, you know the

thick fog, north bay, from san arel, fun of the cams we can show you in the north bay because you've got the help of the car lights to illuminate the fog this morning because it that is thick. down to less than a quarter i've mile here in san rafael. down to less than a tenth of a mile in some locations. our trouble spot if you're doing traveling from the north bay. take it easy. go slower than usual. we are waiting on this chunk of energy to meet up with area of low pressure to our north, once these two meet, the ingredients for rain come together. you can see starting to see echoes of that rain, just north of the bay area. later on, we'll see showers. but it will take a while. we won't see rain until 10:00ing 11:00 in the north bay, san francisco 1:00 and 2:00, south bay, 3:00 and 4:00. you can see how it's going to shape up. a lot of the activity will fall apart. notice how we don't have a lot of yellows and oranges and reds like the past system.

light to moderate rain. it's not a huge storm system as it moves through, at least when it comes to rain. gusty after we get done with the rainy activity. winds are going to start to gust. talking from 40, to 50 miles per hour at coast lean and inland valleys, gusts 20 to 40 miles per hour later this evening. christmas day starts off dry with chili weather making its way in for the weekend. talking. rain ending by christmas morning and then here we go, talking about very chilly air, frosty conditions. 30s for lows, friday, saturday sunday this upcoming weekend. 'tis the season, right. >> 'tis the day for fog, also. looking toward san mateo, anthony talking about all of the fog in the north bay. this is crossing the bay for highway 92. a couple of minutes ago, showed you foster city side. here hayward tough view of the roadway. it's not registering on the road.

drifting in and out of the shots here but a factor. light volume of traffic helps things out. look at that, castro valley 87-280, 880 through hayward. it's 6:11, that would be a time we see a good traffic flow starting but now light around the bay, including south bay with no problems there. tri-valley, no slowing for west 580 or south 68 on talk about a couple of things. talked about the issue in sunol. but now i want to make sure folks see the bay bridge toll plaza where we see no backup here and no metering lights. this is christmas eve, we'll see a lighter volume of for evening hour, folks heading across and around town. it will be a huge factor out of san francisco starting early afternoon. sunol, dark, kind of boring shot, good news. we want a boring morning commute. what's go on, looking for a report of a fire. as we come off of the live shot, it is boring, there was a car that broke down, people got out of the car and started a campfire on the side of the road, because they were cold.

it's not that dramatically cold. i think they wanted to to that for the season. a big worry for drivers, they saw fire, reported it, they put the fire out, and getting help for the car. >> sometimes people have to think before they act. >> yeah. >> fire on the side of the freeway. >> what could possibly happen? >> can't cause slowing or problems or 911 calls. >> not at all. >> solved the mystery. >> thank you, mike. day, several theater here in the bay area, including elmwood in berkeley. the first showing is already sold out. "the interview" is of course a fictional movie involving the killing of north korea's leader. it spurred a cyberattack on sony and threats of violence against theaters that show. sony initially pulled the film, but it's now offering the film in limited release. the latest twist, mixed reaction. >> calling to thank us for america about, you know, free speech in berkeley. yeah. it's entertaining. >> we may be a little arrogant in wanting to push this movie so much to prove we're not scared of anybody. >> berkeley police department says it is aware of the release. but the department has no special plans for the event. >> 6:15 right knew. hearing from one of the women involved in a scary road rage incident. >> viral now, a south bay woman is in jail for allegedly

harassing two young women, intimidating them with both her car and what police say was a fake badge. nbc bay area's ian cole shows us, the young women called 911 and they also recorded the entire incident on video. >> oh my god. >> go, go, go. >> reporter: strykul shot the video saturday as her friend drove on i-80 near auburn north of sacramento. strykul says the driver of a silver suv tailgating them. she made an obscene hand gesture towards that driver and then strykul says the woman lost it. swerving in front of them, trying to make them pull over. >> i was petrified. i was so scared. she continued to follow us. she's in an explorer. >> reporter: one point they did stop, the woman pounded on the window, and waved an i.d. at them strykul claims she tried to put them under arrest. >> go. >> go. >> she called 911, and the women pull away. but there's more swerving and

honking from the driver, and then -- >> she just hit our car! she's pushing us off the road. she's pushing us off the road. she's coming for us. put it in reverse. >> reporter: every moment caught on camera, relayed to the operator. dispatchers direct the women to the gas station, where a chp officer is waiting and where 50-year-old deirdre orozco would be arrested. police say it was her second road rage incident in a week. court she appeared to mock prosecutors reading the charges against her. >> started tailgating two individuals. >> reporter: no matter what happens next, strykul is happy she and her friend are safe. >> there was a moment where i feared for my life. i don't know how i would have handled things differently. >> go. >> reporter: ian cole, nbc bay area news. >> happening right now, thousands of people are spending christmas eve picking up after a deadly storm ripped apart

several mississippi towns overnight. four people died, more than 50 others injured. meteorologists say it's possible a tornado touched down in columbia, mississippi but still investigating that. strong wind ripped the roof off of a daycare center, and there were children inside. thankfully, nobody was hurt. other businesses were also damaged, and numerous cars were flipped over. >> scary, no warning sounds like there. luck illinois luckily we're not experiencing that severe weather. anthony slaughter with a look at weather. first a live look outside at san rafael. a touch of fog, right. >> that's where we have the worst fog, visibility down to a tenth of a mile. it's along the 101 corridor that many use to get into san francisco. >> north bay, more so concentrated. yesterday the south bay. like hot hpotato. airport delays, checked in, you can see sfo, airport delays

because of fog has made its way into the airport. delay up to an hour here in sfo. across the country, when you look at the map, you think that the east coast would be dealing with a lot of the delays. but again, fog. powerful, especially when you try to slide through it. something that is causing delays this morning. of course, san francisco no big surprise this morning. dealing with the fog. and of course if you've flown in or out of the airport, know to call ahead. we are waiting on the chunk of energy here across the pacific to meet up with area of low pressure to the north. the system is not organized. usually when we show you the satellite vantage points you can see the tightly wound up center. nothing like that this morning. you can see the first band of rain starting to push into northern california and that's in going to move through by 10:00 first in the north bay. dangerous fog with us this morning. starting to pick up across the bay bridge approach. mike will be along to talk about how traffic is looking. notice highs today, quite din

from what we saw yesterday. no 0s. back to the 60s for the south bay and locations across the bay area around that 60 degree mark. chilly in the north bay. rain-cooled air will leave us in the 50s. thick morning fog with us. later on, we'll have that rain and then evening, we'll see winds start to pick up as that system moves out of here. want to time that out. you can see, 10:00, 11:00, by noon, showers push into san francisco. around 10:00, heaviest stuff, oakland, east bay, tri-valley, 3:00ing 4:00, rain pushed into the south bay. after the rain ends, winds are going it start to the howell towards evening hours, windses up to 50 miles per hour at coast lean and 40 miles per hour in inland valley. tang it easy if you're on the roadways, of course mudslides and trees continue to fall

across the bay area. keep that in mind. additional extra rain and wind detrimental to the landscape across the bay area. >> you talked about all of the fog through the north bay. we'll show folks this shot through san rafael, well lit by the lights southbound. and they're well spread out. there's a lighter volume of traffic around the bay. glow indicates moisture may be a factor in many patches of the bay bridge, fog drift over here. the view of the bay bridge from the toll plaza camera clear, easy, no metering lights. that's unusual about this 621 shot. east shore freeway, emeryville camera, turned it towards the maze, low clouds drifting through. light volume of traffic off of the maze for 580. out of the caldecott, a stall, i don't see a lot of slowing there. a look at the map, orange all over the north bay across the carquinez and benicia bridges, patchy, dense fog from antioch bridge, highway 160. but you see no slowing.

that's a very light flow of traffic. looking at oakland, oakland hills, dense fog at times there as well as patches across the san mateo bridge. watch 92 over to the peninsula side. south bay, northbound routes showing a green drive except one stretch of 680 down at 16 miles per hour no incidents after the crash cleared. palo alto, talking about that fog, drifting through now, watch woodside, palo alto right here. heading south, clear view at university but north toward willow, lose sight of the cars a quarter mile away. use caution, visibility's tough at times. back to you. >> thank you. appreciate that report. 6:22. still ahead, a dog falls from 15-story balcony but survives to bark another day. gets an eyebrow raise from vicky nguyen. what softened his landing.

an old saying that cats have more than one life. reportedly they have nine. dogs have a fair share as well. it's a 13-year-old boston terrier recovering after falling from 15-story balcony into a hot tub. >> incredible. a pretty amazing story of survival. >> reporter: fighting tears from his balcony, an emotional bill mccord recalls the frightening experience.

>> you just can't imagine a dog going through that kind of trauma. >> reporter: if they say cats have nine lives, bill's 13-year-old boston terrier sammy could be considered to join his feline friend. >> he got on the next balcony, tried to work his way back. he has an eyesight issue. >> reporter: when the eyesight failed, there was nowhere to go but down. what happened next was a miracle. by all accounts, no way sam should have survived to bark another day. >> just to the east of this balcony is a pool and hot tub. the dog went directly into the hot tub. >> reporter: this sign meant nothing. >> hit the hot tub, he instinct started swimming to get out. he swam three times, found the stairs, pulled himself out. >> reporter: suffering from cracked pelvis and broken rib, now recovering at the animal hospital. after falling from one of the tallest residential buildings in sacramento -- >> i've seen him stand up and walk. it's just -- it's amazing.

plaza. no raindrops there traffic moving very nicely. but that is going to change, in just a few hours. we'll be taking a closer look at the timing of those raindrops moving in with anthony and your morning drive with mike. >> stay tuned. first, another health scare for president george h.w. bush, waking up in a hospital, after experiencing shortness of breath. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joining us washington, d.c. you mentioned last time we spoke to you he had a similar scare a couple of years ago. any word on his condition? >> hearing that he will probably be in the hospital through the day but think he's going to be fine. doctors kept hem overnight in an abundance of caution for observation, after he checked in last night. he showed up in an ambulance, sent to the hospital, complaining of shortness of breath. so we'll hopefully get more details about his situation later today. you're right, it was two years ago, right now around the holidays, back in 2012, he

landed in the hospital with what at the time seemed to be more serious than what we're hearing so far now. he had bronchitis, he was there for seven weeks, january before he got out. complication related to bronchitis that he was dealing with. then he got out and bounced back and went parachuting for his 90th birthday this past year. hoping he's doing well. latest word that we got this morning was that he will likely be in today, but he is expected to recover. >> encouraging news. thank you very much, tracie potts, from washington. time to check the forecast. live look outside. take you back to the bay bridge toll plaza there. we are expecting rain to move in dris ma christmas eve. if you have travel plans, tahoe, give us the hour by hour, best times to leave. >> it's going to be the most detrimental this afternoon. that's key, leave early if you can. now best time to leave for the

drive. the other thing to deal with, if you are going to leave now, wherever your going, dense fog. thick fog. hearing from folks in the back, you can't see lights in front of you on the highway driving in. take it easy than was slew the santa clara valley area. on the piece of activity across the pacific to move in, meet up with the area of low pressure to the north. system's not organized. it's scratched out. because of that, rain we're going to get, it's not heavy either. we're talking about light to moderate reason moving in. so it will be problematic. but i think more so this fog is more problematic those morning. you can see the south bay, starting to become thick. also across oakland and in the north bay, that's where it's the most widespread. as you see from sky camera network, you can barely, you can't see anything from this camera. this camera is activated. i was checking it, there's one light down there that shows the street in that in south bay.

there is beginning to see -- we are beginning to see fog thicken up across the south bay. quite a different story from what we saw an hour ago. even in the east shore, peninsula, thick fog. san francisco, north bay, hard to escape the fog wherever you are, it's very, very foggy. now, rain will move in as we head towards afternoon hours. by 10:00, 11:00, dry for the bay area. north bay will see showers first. then noon, 1:00, 2:00, rain will push into the san francisco area. down through the peninsula, and over towards east shore as well. by 3:00, 4:00, we'll see rain in the south bay and also that rain will be continuing for sacramento, the central valley, towards la. or up to tahoe, that rain will eventually change over to snow above 4,000 feet. they're expecting another foot of snow above 6,000 feet. look what happens, by 5:00, done with rain. even by 7:00, tahoe will be done with the snow. so, other thing to keep in mind while talking about the rain

moving in, very fierce winds are going to pittsburgh ck up as we. winds will gust. by 5:00, worst of the winds by 5:00 and 7:00. that's when we can see wind up to 50 miles per hour at the coastline than includes san francisco. while we've got fog creating problems, i think wins are going to be the big factor, causing more delays at some airports. check the drive and talk to mike. >> going for a blustery day. thank you, weatherman. looking here towards the south bay, sun's coming up. look at the silhouetting 680 and 280. that's the way i look at the world, because i'm supposed top 101, beautiful flow of traffic. there is fog all around the bay, south bay, anthony showed you one of the cameras the fog drifted through. lights at 280 and 17 covering silicon valley freeways.

our friend said you couldn't see the freeway exit signs until just about on them coming through santa clara and san jose. that was a factor for 101 and the drive. nice easy drive. smooth drive across the dumbarton bridge, also a fog advisory earned and that's unusual for highway 84. here we have fog also at you're approaching the oakland hills and bay bridge, no metering lights light at bay bridge toll plaza. show you the san mateo toll plaza, because from the hayward side it's tough to see at times. looking at clouds, rolling through the span on the flat section. cleared by the time you get to the peninsula. oakland, 880, low visibility, right by the coliseum, you can see the light at bottom of the screen, it's at the top of the roof where the camera's mounted. from time to time we haven't been able to see the lights. >> a holiday hue. see the orangish color. >> did you plan that? >> yes, for you at home and you guys. >> appreciate it.

people living in the hawaiian town celebrating a preefb, a river of red hot lava head for a busy shopping complex, appears to be losing steam. the lava creeping toward the big island shopping center, has stalled for now. they worried the flow would hit the marketplace on or around christmas day but the front has hardened and hasn't moved much if at all in past 48 hours. lava about 700 yards away from the shopping center, which including supermarket, gas station, several other shops.

officials say the lava is still branching out, though in other directions. they're not out of it yet. >> hard to predict that path of lava. >> not much to do about it. >> no, most certainly not. 6:40. looking for something good to do christmas eve, why not take the family out to see the spectacular holiday light displays around the bay area. >> fun time. san jose, this house on cherry avenue known as the make a wish house for a donation, get your picture taken with mr. and mrs. claus and all of the money they raise goes to make-a-wish foundation. last year the light show raised $24,000. >> close by, this home lights up shasta drive in santa clara. the homeowner synced all of the lights to eight different songs. also a radio station to listen to to get full effect while you enjoy the show from your car. >> always fun when they sent crow niz the music and the lights. in east bay, mr. christmas' last

strykul says the driver of a silver suv was tailgating them. she made an obscene hand gesture towards that driver and then strykul says the woman lost it. swerving in front of them, trying to make them pull over. >> i was petrified. i was so scared. she continued to follow us. she's in an explorer. >> reporter: one point they did stop, the woman pounded on the window, and waved an i.d. at them, strykul claims she tried to put them under arrest. >> go. >> go. >> she called 911, and the women pull away. but there's more swerving and honking from the driver, and then -- >> she just hit our car! she's pushing us off the road. she's pushing us off the road. she's coming for us. put it in reverse. >> reporter: every moment caught on camera, relayed to the operator. dispatchers direct the women to the gas station, where a chp officer is waiting and where 50-year-old deirdre orozco would be arrested.

police say it was her second road rage incident in a week. in court she appeared to mock prosecutors reading the charges against her. >> started tailgating two individuals. >> reporter: no matter what happens next, strykul is happy she and her friend are safe. >> there was a moment where i feared for my life. i don't know how i would have handled things differently. >> go. >> reporter: ian cole, nbc bay area news. up date to developing news. surveillance video shows the moments before a berkeley, missouri, police officer shot and killed a black teenager. this video was posted on youtube by the st. louis police department, the department says that it shows the suspect raising a hand gun at the over. moments later the of shot and killed the suspect. the video is grainy. you can see the suspect raising his arm, but it's unclear if he was holding a gun. the officer confronted the

suspect while investigating reports of stealing at a gas station, shortly after the shooting 300 people protested near the scene. some threw bricks and explosives. that's in berkeley, a couple of miles away from ferguson. >> interesting and unusual police releasing that video quickly. two police officers were hurt when they ran into a burning apartment complex to rescue a person inside. it happened after midnight near country club drive. a spokesperson for the public safety department says the two officers suffered smoke inhalation but they howl should observe kay. the person inside the apartment is treated for minor burns. three units are damaged and 14 people out of a home. many consider a doctor who makes house calls the epitome of personal service. >> one doctor may have you rethinking that. what she's doing in this edition
