thanks for joining us. we're looking live outside at foster city this morning. thanks for being here with us. get a check of your microclimate forecast. i want to let you know you were spot on for the new year's eve forecast. ended up having to spend christmas eve in a motel room because as you predicted the snow closed the path. it was chains required. the length of road kept getting further and further. we decided not to risk it. we drove up christmas morning, clear as a bell. zero degrees some of mornings were we in tahoe. >> we were complaining about how cold it was here in 30s and 40s. you were spot on describing that. the snow really gets treacherous expect driving through it. when we put the alerts out there it's good the take heed. another cold morning expected

for today. this afternoon we'll see a mix of sun and clouds. it's not going to bring any rain for us. it may bring some snow to the sierra but it's going to bring the cold air. that's going to be the highlight. it's 37 in san jose. 37 in livermore. 36 in saratoga. it's not as cold as it was yesterday coming through the i tri-vall tri-valley. one of our coldest is the north bay. you can still see everybody there. while we're not at freezing it's still very cold and will remain chilly this afternoon with temperatures back in the 50s. back in just a bit to talk about the new year's forecast. good time to cover the plants outside and make sure you bring the animals inside. thank you. we begin this morning with breaking news. an air asia airliner carrying

162 people has disappeared this morning the search and rescue mission is on hold because night as fallen. the plane was heading from singapore to indonesia early saturday morning local time. the plane lost communication with air traffic control about an hour before scheduled to land. there's 155 passengers and seven crew members aboard the airbus. most were indonesian. the airline issued a statement saying air asia indonesia regrets to confirm that flight 8501 has last contact with air traffic control at 7:20 this morning. the statement goes onto say the aircraft was on the submitted flight plan route and requesting deviation. the flight might have been caught in a thunderstorm. >> weather radar showing big areas of red which means there's

violent thunderstorms going on. it does look as though the pilot requested an alternative route but what has happened is possibly and it's only speculation it might have been hit by thunder and might have gone down. >> according to a transport official the airplane asked the fly higher to avoid clouds. no distress signal was sent. the pilot's voice contact was less an an hour after take off. we will continue to follow this breaking story on air and

online. we'll have the latest on nbcbayarea.com and tonight on nbc bay area news following sunday night football. it was last saturday when two new york city police officers were shot to death simply for wearing a badge. yesterday thousands of law men and women from around the country and beyond paid their respects. ♪ they gathered shoulder to shoulder at a queens new york church to say farewell to officer rafael ramos. tributes to the officer lasted more than an hour starting with remarks from vice president joe biden. however, when mayor bill de blasio was introduced some nypd officers watching outside turned their backs. some believe the mayor contributed to a climate of

mistrust against police. >> if we can learn to see each other and when we see each other we'll heal. we'll heal as a department. we'll heal as a city. we'll heal as a country. >> the family of ramos partner were also in attendance. the funeral for officer liu will be held next saturday. >> two san rafal police officel officers took the trip. graham explained the most emotional moment while at the funeral. >> the officer son has been noted as makie inine ining writ his father was killed and one was plain innocent truth. no matter what's going on if you call for the police we'll be there. we'll be there to help out no matter what's going on.

that really rang true for me. >> about 23,000 officers attended the funeral including officers from san jose and san francisco. with new year's around the corner police will be out in full force looking for drunk drivers as people start their celebrations early. in san mateo police set up a dui check point last night and within the first 15 minutes several drivers were pulled over. advance warnings can help reduce the number of drunk driving crashes by 20%. in california more than 800 deaths and 24,000 injuries can be attributed to impaired driving in 2012. on monday a bill will be introduced to expand a state pilot program requiring first time dui offenders to have a breathalyzer in their car to lock the ignition if alcohol is detected. it's in four california counties and it's the law in two dozen states. >> in those two dozen states

utilizing the devices they are showing a 30 to 40% reduction in deaths caused by drunk drivers. >> officers are watching for drugged driving which is becoming a problem ranging from illegal to prescription drugs. the nation's largest homeless encampment, the jungle, has been shut down by the city of san jose but it's been replaced by a new community known as the village. yolanda is a new resident. she's survived the last year living in a tent. she's working with other people living in the village to make sure it's safe and welcoming place. >> i feel safer and i feel like i'm in family here. we're trying to make a difference and do things the right way. >> everyone living at the village is being asked to sign a contract promising to follow rules such as no loud noise after 10:00 p.m. and no open flames. some nearby business owners say

they have hired security at night because of damage caused by the homeless at the village. some are hoping to get the people there evicted. warming centers across the bay area were open last night. they are offering beds and warm meals for people who would otherwise be sdtuck in the cold. with temperatures dropping into the 30s the center is ready to help. >> capacity of the building is 250. at the gillroy armory where we operate the largest, the capacity is 100. with the permission of the national guard we have been allowed to go over capacity. >> people are able to stay an extra two hours this morning to keep warm. much more ahead on today in the bay. we have confirmed reports of jim harbaugh's next destination. a california girl's basketball team kept from playing. why they're choice of warm ups

your time now is 7:12. you're looking live at downtown san jose. pretty clear out there but quite cold this morning. we'll take you to a developing story right now after all of the rumors and hearsay the worst kept secret in the bay area is confirmed. jim harbaugh will coach his final game with the 49ers today. harbaugh is heading to michigan. it's been confirmed that harbaugh will become the next head coach of the university of michigan. the bleacher report broke the news yesterday. a press conference to introduce coach harbaugh is expected to be held on tuesday. he departed after four seasons as the 49ers head coach. we'll have reaction later in

this newscast. the attire of a girl's basketball team has been benched from a tournaments. the variety team was uninvited to play at ft. bragg after the players wore i can't breathe t-shirts while warming up. those are the last words of eric garner who was killed by new york police in a choke hold. his death has prompted nationwide protests. they said they couldn't ensure safety if someone took issue with the t-shirts. many of the girls insisted on wearing the shirts. they are now out of monday's tournament. more news and weather ahead on today in the bay. coming up, the recent rains haven't helped these fish. we'll tell you what's complicating their struggle to survive. this morning we're take ww y waking up to a chilly start. we have lots of sunshine that will warm us back to 60. it gets even colder. we'll break duown the forecast and get you into 2015.

we want to give you a live look outside at sfo. pretty clear skies. right now anthony slaughter says there's no weather delays. gas prices are at their lowest level in more than four years. the average price is at $2.31. prices at some station have dipped below $2. the cheapest cities are dallas at $1.99. tulsa at 1.95. booming u.s. oil production has helped keep gas prices cheape. consumption has dropped to 40-year lows. analysts say there's saudia

arab arabia. that competition could keep gas prices down for months or years to come. here in the bay area prices aren't as low as $2 but they are taking a dip. in san francisco the average cost of gas is 2.85. in oakland and san jose it's 2.70. in spite of the heavy rains and creeks, biologists are not seeing a rise in the number of salmon spawning. >> reporter: we're seeing three times more water this year than last year. we are not seeing three times the number of fish. >> we do surveys where we walk through the creek. >> reporter: fishery program manager gregory andrew is counting the number of salmon nesting sites. >> we're up to about 70 red

total. >> reporter: he said average is 250. the numbers right now are on track for a little more than half that. >> there is salmon down there. >> reporter: he points out male and female getting ready to spawn. the water district has been tracking the population of these fish for decades. they have seen wild swings from 1300 fish down to just 60. andrew used to say the population was stable but tenuous. >> to say they are stable now is a stretch. >> reporter: people come to see them from late november to mid-january. >> it's quite something to experience. >> reporter: regulars did notice a drop off during the drought. >> the last few years have been pretty thin. >> reporter: the salmon are a keystone species in this ecosystem. trees take up the nutrients.

the hope is with more water we'll see more fish. that's not happened. coming out here and looking helps. >> bring your children out with you so they have a sense of importance of salmon being good for them and their life in california i think the what you want to try to get people to do. >> reporter: mark matthews nbc bay area news. anthony slaughter back with a check of the forecast. interesting to hear with the rain that the fish aren't doing so well. >> the coldest air we have seen all season and the fact i was going back looking back at temperatures this is the coldest we've seen all year. it's cold out there. we're talking about temperatures below freezing even in the south bay. we don't see that too often. the last time that happened was new year's eve last year.

that's how you contract the c e climate across the bay area. you can see what we're looking at this morning. not too bizarre but below average. 37 right now in the south bay. 38 in the peninsula. even in san francisco you in the 50s yesterday morning, 44 this morni morning. 36 in the north bay. later on this afternoon we'll see temperatures back close to 60. very similar to what we saw yesterday. there's a football game happening. the last one, san francisco 49ers take on the arizona cardinals. kick off at 1:25. it will be chilly. 59 expected at levi stadium by 3:00. a nice light jacket or hoodie. hot cocoa a good idea as well. we're talking about temperatures

that will be bitterly cold. we're talking tuesday in the south bay and wednesday and thursday. these will be some of our coldest nights. i want you to focus on the smaller number. that's the overnight low. tuesday night, 32 expected. wednesday night new year's eve, 31 expected. even in walnut creek you're expected to get near freezing and in some of our inland valleys you could be talking about temperatures in the 20s like santa rosa and towards napa and walnut creek. it's going to get even colder. we have another storm system to our north. this one is diving right out of canada and will sweep across the bay area tuesday and wednesday. it's not going to bring any snow to any of the bay area mountain tops. it could bring some snow to the sierra. by thursday we'll be dry. it's going to be very cold and windy. that's the key as we head through the this newier ieyear' forecast. we are talking about winds gusting up to 20 to 30 miles per

hour for new year's eve. by 11:00 it's in the 40s for san francisco. 39 degrees expected. here is our wind cast. you can see just how windy it will be on wednesday. the good news by the evening hours the winds should subside but it's still going to be gusting anywhere from 20 to 30 miles per hour. because we'll have temperatures so cold you add that very gusty wind. this is your wind chill, how it will feel on the exposed skin if you're going to be outside. 31 in the south bay. 30 in the peninsula. you add the wind, you'll be feeling like you're in the upper 30s to near 41 degrees downtown. east bay, tri-valley and north bay is where you'll see some of the most widespread cold air. this is your wind chill temperature back into the lower 30s. the wind chill could be in the 20s.

it's the white shark. no introduction there. if it has a bit player, that would probably be the salmon shark. >> it's the smaller cousin of the white shark. that's a picture of one jumping. it's been pretty poorly studied. >> reporter: they may be lesser known than their famous cousin. they turn up on the end of fishing lines. >> they weren't described as a species until 1947. no one really paid attention to them. >> reporter: researchers at stanford's marine station are now paying these elusive sharks plenty of taeattention. >> if you're trying to describe what a migration pattern is there's a bunch. >> reporter: to figure out where these travelers go and what they eat, researchers are turning to cutting edge science. >> turns out they lay down their backbon backbones. they lay down growth bands like trees lay down rings.

>> reporter: by analyzing the backs scientists are getting a snap shop of what food they have eaten. >> if you eat a squid in california, that looks different than in alaska. >> reporter: the research has vealed the sharks travel from california to japan spending a good amount of time in alaska, baja and the waters of the bay area. >> we have had sharked in alaska come swimming offshore to the lab. >> that's a picture of tag. >> reporter: researchers are now combining it with traditional electronic tagging. >> what's really becoming cutting edge is using these advance techniques to together to give us much deeper knowledge than we could with only one. >> reporter: this could soon be used to learn more about the lives of other marine life. >> we're going to try to do similar thing with white shark. >> reporter: by learning about the travels of salmon sharks

experts described the outage as a country wide black out. the country is blaming the u.s. for its ongoing internet problems. the u.s. has not confirmed or denied any involvement. the president did promise a response to the cyber attack on sony studios. leaders there called president obama a racial slur and threatened inescapable deadly blows. we got our first look at one of the people claiming responsibility for hacking xbox and playstation networks on christmas day. he gave his name as ryan and said he's from finland. he says the attack was meant to expose poor security. he says he feels no remorse for the hack that disrupted gaming systems worldwide. >> these companies make tens of millions just their subscriber fees and that doesn't include like purchase made by their

customers. they should have more than enough funding to be able to protect against these hacks. >> ryan says three to four people carried out the attack most lly for their own amusemen. getting around the bay area after new year's eve celebrations should be a little more convenient. bart plans to offer extended hours and more trains in the early hours of 2015. service will run in 3:00 a.m. trains will run every 20 minutes after midnight. for more information you can go to bart.gov. in san mateo getting around on new year's eve won't cost you a dime. free rides on all bus lines from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the buses will run on a normal it was. on new year's day all buses will run on a sunday schedule. much much ahead.

today the harbaugh era is coming to an end. here is matt with reaction on harbaugh heading to michigan. >> i guess it's not surprising. we knew that there was no way jim harbaugh was coming back to the 49ers. we knew that michigan was appealing to his extensive history. he played at michigan. he played for coach. jim harbaugh often quotes him during his press conferences. we also knew there were going to be a couple of nfl teams lining up. however, michigan came at him hard. they were persistent. they knew that they had the advantage of history on their side with jim harbaugh having played there. they're able to get the deal done. >> to the hardwood now, they were back in the friendly confines of oracle arena.

factory farm animals in cages will be granted a little more freedom to move come january 1st because of initiative that passed six years ago in california, proposition 2. we've been following the changes for months. >> it was a very simple measure. factory farms give animals more room to move. farms were given six years to transition to more humane housing systems and their deadline is now here. will the changes do anything at all to make our food safer? it was water shed moment for california farm animals. proposition 2 passing with 63% of the vote giving animals room to move. >> prop 2 said that egg laying hen, breeding pens and veal cal

calves needed to given enough space to stand up, turn around and stretch their limbs. from the perspective of largest animal protection organization in the world there aren't animals that suffer because of the quantity and quality of duress and depravation that egg laying hens experience. multiple studies show that chickens kept extreme cage confinement are more issususcepe to outbreaks. the cdc reports in the u.s. salmonella sickens over a million people annually and kills 400 americans every year. the cdc sites eggs as the number one cause of food poisoning in our country. >> there isn't a silver bullet.

there is no magic answer. there are pluses and minuses on both sides. >> he also serves as a president of the association for california egg farmers. >> if you're eating an egg in san jose or oakland it probably came out of here. >> they are kept in battery cages which he told me he would not let me see. this is typical footage o of a battery operation. they live in cages inside sheds that can hold over 250,000 birds. >> walk in there and they'll be just as happy. >> even though they are packed. >> walk in there and they'll be just as happy. >> the research tells a different story. a study published in the american journal found eggs from

battery cage chickens were twice as likely to sicken consumers. piles of waste are allowed to build up in the sheds creating what they call fecal dust. he says keeping them in battery cages make salmonella outbreaks less likely. >> they are removed from fecal matter. >> there's dead hens in some of the cages. they are dying every day because of pour nutrition, poor conditions. all their energy is going into producing eggs. they are anemic. that have parasites and worms. she's one of the very few people who have regular access to sheds. >> they don't ever clean the

feces. they are waist high. it burns your eyes and lungs. it's doing the same thing to the chickens. >> construction is under way for an enormous shed. it will house over 250,000 caged hens. >> the one we put up will have about 260,000. >> how much people to maintain them? >> one quarter of one person per day. everything is automated. >> how do you feel about that? >> i think it's technology being used to the max. >> the question remains, will prop 2 impact sal moe nsalmonel outbreaks at all? about 90% of the eggs we eat come from factory farm hens. several countries such as germany and austria have banned

i want to start you off with temperatures if you're heading outside in the next hour or so it's going to continue to remain very cold. we're at 36 in santa rosa. mountain view is at 38. what you'll note the difference from yesterday while we had temperatures below freezing in some locations this morning everybody is above freezing. it's still very cold.

you want to bundle up as you head outside. later on this afternoon temperatures top out in mid to upper 50s. 57 for the peninsula. east shore you'll be at 56. san francisco clear skies now. a mix of sun and clouds with breezy conditions. you can see the flag moving around a bit and you have clear skies. the good news even though we have clear skies we don't have fog and no airport delays to report this morning. the 49ers have game there taking on the arizona cardinals. temperatures back into the mid-50s. a mix of sun and clouds here and it will be chilly with the wind out of north. a light jacket and sweater is a good idea. it's cold right now. it's going to be colder. tuesday, wednesday and thursday that's going to be the coldest stretch this upcoming week. san jose at the top and walnut creek at the bottom. even in san jose where we don't get freezing temperatures very

often looks like we'll see that on wednesday night. even in walnut creek right above freezing tuesday and wednesday. it's going to be very cold this upcoming week. cold enough to have to bring in some of those plants and tender vegetation outside. the thing about it, it's not going to bring any rain for us. it may bring snow to the sierra. that's going to be the cold air that rushes in tuesday night and wednesday night. by thursday and friday temperatures will moderate a bit. it's going to very cold. in san francisco, the thing i want you to notice here at 11:00 that's when most of us are out. temperatures will be in the mid-40s in san francisco the keep in mind with that gusty wind we're talking about a wind chill in the upper 30s. as we head towards 5:00 and 6:00, you'll notice temperature at 5:00 in the morning and san francisco in the 30s. it's going to get even colder
