hello and welcome to "comunidad del valle." i'm damian trujillo. plus, we embark on the city of san jose. this is your "comunidad del valle." nbc bay area presents "comunidad del valle" with damian trujillo. >> we begin today with the last visit of the year from the office of the mexican consulate right here in san jose. with me on "comunidad del valle" is my guest. >> thank you very much for inviting me.  >> we wanted to talk about the

deadline maybe and maybe some safety concerns. tell us, first of all, for those who don't know what it is, tell us what daka is. >> this is protecting the persons who are not documented. so now it permits their actions to be more extend that action. so before it was the people have to be born before 1981. now they just have to be 16 and in the united states. >> and here is a video of your offices right here in san jose. does this only pertain to the students or everybody? >> everybody who is 16 years old

before 2008 and also the parental, they are extended the opportunity to the parents who have children and they have been in the united states from the first january 2010, they have to be continuously in the united states. >> we know how big of a deal this is in the united states. how big of a deal is it for mexico? >> we have so many mexicans that it's going to be around 4 million. so we have many in california. so we are working hard to keep the documents to the people so it's -- we are inviting them to have their documentation, it will not be valid in 180 days. so it's going to be valid for the parents. and daca is in february. so they have to pay attention to

our immigration. >> and excuse my ignorance. is daca something new or has that been ongoing? >> no. it is completely new. it was on november 20th president obama gave the executive action. >> right. >> and then it started from then it's going to be 180 days for daca, for the parents who have children. so they are not going to be deported if they do not have any criminal -- >> and a lot of nuances and kind of intracracies that the president signed coming to light. that's where daca originated from. i guess some people might want to be hiring some lawyers so they can help them through this process. people should be careful and make sure they are not being taken advantage of? >> yes. we are inviting the people to check, first of all, the lawyers that they are checking. now is not when people will say send me your papers.

so please don't do that because it's going to be until may we know all of the documents that will be needed for that. so no way, not now. the attorneys can come to the consulate and ask for the attorneys. we have a is will of attorneys and check the people that they are giving the papers. >> and i know that we have been dealing with the d achl ca, students with deferred action and now they will not be deported with the new dapa program? >> if they have children born in the united states, yes, they can apply for dapa. if they do not have children, they cannot apply for deferred action. >> it's called dapa and daca.

here in san jose. welcome to the show. >> thank you for having us. >> now, we don't have video -- it's embarrassing that we don't have video but we do have video of them showing up in los angeles. give me an idea of what we're talking about here. we're talking about how big of a deal and what happens at the children's museum. >> this is our 17th year. and it's just become a wonderful community celebration. it's one of the largest in the region. we have thousands of visitors that come and enjoy the performances of youth singers and adults and performing with us for over six years. it's been a wonderful treat for our visitors and it's a chance for not only our community who is part of their tradition for their family but for the whole community of san jose to understand a different thing about a culture that they didn't maybe know about before. it's a great opportunity to learn about this and how their families celebrate.

>> that is going to lead into my next question. this is not only maybe a religious event but it's cultural and has deep roots in latin traditions. >> that's how we came to host the event. we wanted to reach out to our community and make sure that we represented all of the families. and what we found with our advisory group was that this was a piece missing from their traditional celebrations and it is really a great opportunity to share that. >> let's talk about your performances there and what you take out of it every time. >> i have an honor to be part of this wonderful event. i love bringing the mexican culture, you know, this event to the museum. i'm a singer so i perform in different shows and actually i sing one of the main principle

songs of the show which pretty much talks about the journey of the three kings, you know, and then going to the birth of jesus. so it's pretty much, you know, has a lot of meaning to the whole event. so it's an honor to sing that song. >> tell me the reaction that you get from those watching this event. >> it's really beautiful. lots of kids go and it's wonderful to see different ethnicities, not just latino, other people coming to learn about this wonderful tradition. >> so you're bringing gabrielle back over and over. >> it's really an opportunity for young children, maybe it's the first time they are performing in front of a group and we continue to provide that chance for other performers. >> you talk about the other ethnicities and culture. what's it like to share a part of you with them, a part of your background? >> well, i feel really proud of my culture and everything and then to be able to share it with other people, just makes me feel

like, you know, really special. like i'm bringing in a light and sharing something that really is a big part of me being latina and half mexican. it's really wonderful to share that. >> all right. it's "dia de los 3 reyes magos. they are passing out gifts. we'll be back and talk more about this great event when we come back. stay with us.

>> oh, that's beautiful. give her a hand [ applause ] >> thank you. >> what does it take to project your voice like that because i can dream about that and never do it. >> actually, i'm a little sick so it's a little harder for me but it's something really natural. i'm sure you have the voice. i'm sure you can do it. >> yeah, in my own mind. but when you heard that voice, did you say, we've got to bring her back? >> it gives us chills and she's also wearing a beautiful dress. there is tortilla making and beautiful color of the flowers and the dresses that she wears, it all comes to life. >> you know, traditionally, i know that dia de los 3 rey

3 reyes magos falls on january 6th. that's usually when you go to the grandparents and open presents. this tradition goes back many years. >> it's great because the families really share those stories with us when they get to meet the kings because we have our own kings who walk around the museum and give out the treats to the visitors and it's a chance for the families to share their stories and to share it with their children. and maybe it's grandma sharing it with the young children. we know that santa kind of overtakes the region here but this is a chance for them to really highlight that. >> don't get me wrong, santa exists also in mexico but i think that this dominates and everyone waits until the 6th. >> it's all about the shoes. >> you do know my girls. and you're performing -- you perform nonstop? wherever you're invited, you're there? >> yeah. it started to be like my second

home. i was pretty much raised there in this career, you could say that. so, yeah. not only do i perform there and other different singers, to be part of such talent and share the stage with them. >> lastly, what do you endeavor to do or be or is singing what you're going to be doing? >> well, i mean, of course i study and i'm doing education and everything. but music has always been my passion. so of course i would go to college and everything but if something presents itself, i would really love to continue this career because music is my life. i love it. >> what a performer. absolutely. >> this is one of many events that happen year-round at the museum. >> we have many cultural events throughout the year. following this we'll have our lunar new year's festival where we'll open up an exhibit about vietnam and a vietnamese event and a south asian community

event and then we host an event which gabrielle performs at many times a year. there's always something happening. we have an exhibit right now called build it. >> i've seen it. what's up there now? it's not -- there's like a bunny? >> a duck. >> very nice to know that. >> well, here we go. it's happening at children's discovery museum on january 10th and 11th. any final thoughts? >> we're having a membership special. whole family can get in for under 100 bucks for the whole year. >> if you have not been inside the children's discovery museum, you need to go. >> correct. >> thank you so much and good luck. >> thank you. next up on "comunidad del valle," little joe of la familia.

yes. it's quite a mixture there. but there was a guy that had done that before me. and i grew up listening to -- [ speaking in foreign language ] they all had bands similar to what you just heard there. and i just never thought that i would ever, one, live this long had i known, i would have taken better care of my pickup. but, you know, that was really -- i was influenced by their music, their performance. they were all great artists. >> and all these new up and coming performers, they are not young anymore but they all credit you. you're the godfather. >> it can be good. i am honored for that, you know.

but i was born at a time and place and an era of when music was so different, you know. i grew up listening to the big band, you know, the singers from the '40s and in the '50s and '60s, great talent and artists. people see the show and hear me do a sinatra song or tony bennett song and i've written songs that sound similar to that. and the biggest compliment they can pay me is when they say -- i have one song that says -- oh, my god. those are my heroes, you know. and -- but i've studied -- i've

studied his writing and we can learn if we stop and listen and so i come from that old school, you know, and where some of these younger artists are taking up from, i say, go back to basics, go back and learn from the people that actually made this music happen, you know, and it doesn't matter what genre, you know. when you talk about duke ellington and still the foundation is always, to me, very, very important. ♪ ♪
