. >> some would say george siefert had the toughest job. not just the season where they got the lombardi trophy but also following in the steps of the great bill walsh was a monumental task for anyone. with resolve and vision seifert was about to put his staff on the storied 9ers' history books, but, first, not without some sage advice. >> i didn't really go into it with the idea i wanted to dramatically change anything. as my wife told me you know when i got the job. she said george, don't screw it up, and so i did everything i could not to screw it up. if you ask another head coach how easy is it to keep your team together and to win a super bowl particularly after you just won one, that's probably one of the more difficult things to do. >> that team that first year was

doing we were ahead of everybody else. >> george did a fantastic job of just keeping the train rolling. i think a lot of people kind of underestimate just how great of a defensive coach he was. i mean he was every bit the innovator on the defensive side of the ball as bill walsh was on the offensive side of the ball. stwloo our defense was always fun to watch, especially in the big games. they're the reason we won the championships. >> the 49ers' defense rivalled the star-studded offense and became the bedrock in which george would mold his team to become champions once again. opponents and even players would justly to get their glimpse at the seifert defense and the men who executed it. >> the cornerback we would all catch up with our coaches. as soon as we were done we were right back up on the line. 90% of the time if we didn't have to try to still figure something else out. as soon as we did, we were

sitting up there and watching them. >> although the 49ers competed every year making it to the nfc championships in 1990 1992 and 1993. siefert and his team couldn't seem to enjoy the success they had in their earlier years. george faced enormous decisions for the franchise and holding the team into champions once again would not come without a price. >> the really turbulent period the changing of the guard where joe montana leaves and young takes over. the nfc championship. all the while, you know there's george just ultra cool on the sideline with his wind breaker on. you never changed his expression. >> although his poker face may have been one that could keep an opponent guessing inside a secretive competitive fire

burned, and he would play the cards he was dealt. in 1994 the team went 13-3 in regular season and put all their chips on the table for the fifth lombardi trophy. >> i have kids to feed now. they want a brand name. >> that's up. goes for the end zone. touchdown, 49ers! touchdown 49ers! what a play.

motivating affect it had on me as a coach. >> george seifert's impact on the 49ers franchise and the men who donned the helmet was truly felt while he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a two-time world champion head coach. it did not end, however, when his stint with the team did. earlier this season the 49ers -- by rewarding him as the 25th member to enter the edward j. debarlow sr. 49ers hall of fame. >> it's not ease where i to pick up something that was working very well and pick up and repeat and improve upon that success. talent alone doesn't win you super bowl. what you do last year doesn't win you a super bowl. you have to continue to prepare and continue to work and continue to fight. it starts as soon as the season begins.

who can forget bill walsh's last super bowl team. ronny lott's tackle of icky woods. icky woods was kind of starting to get going in the ballgame, and out of nowhere, what ronald tackles him. you didn't hear from icky woods the rest of the game. he has a great commercial now. i like that little -- we didn't hear from oods anymore. >> if we have a goal and we work hard, we have a chance to aheave the goal. if we don't work hard we have to chance. it's so simple, and i can honestly say in the 17 years i coached with san francisco, i don't remember walking off the field not thinking that our players worked hard. >> congratulations.

>> i remember bill in particular always saying we got to get rid of that term faithful. we have to -- where people didn't talk about being faithful anymore. they talked about our success as a championship team and organization. it was kind of interesting because, you know it's a great term. 49er faithful. by god, we're going to get there someday. when i was a kid in 1957 we had great players and we're going to win the championship, and detroit comes in and plays in 1957. we could never get over the hump. you are always faithful. we wanted to get it to a point where they didn't have to be

faithful anymore. they just knew it was going to happen, and i think that was kind of one of the motivating thoughts. one of the many but that was one of the motivating thaudz thoughts in trying to get this team to be a championship team. ♪

♪ >> am i going somewhere? >> end of the road for jim harbough and the san francisco 49ers. the head coach ended the season today with a win over arizona, and the awkward pregame hug with the team's ceo. a gatorade bath on the field. it was clear this was his last game with this team. good evening, everyone. i'm terry mcsweeney. peggy bunker is off tonight. we're on right now because of sunday night football. after the game today coach jim harbough said it had been a great privilege to coach the san francisco 49ers. he leaves behind a remarkable legacy. 44 regular season wins in four seasons. we have live team coverage for you on what's next for harbough and the search for a new head coach. we'll start with nbc bay area's marianne favro live with what jim harbough is saying and what

fans are saying. mary ann. >> well terry, the fans we talked to tonight after the game here at levi stadium were very disappointed. in fact, they said that look here is a coach that brought our team to three nfc championships his first three seasons, and it was a super bowl in 2015, and they think he deserves to stay. >> minutes after the 49ers ended their last game of the season with a victory over arizona, the team issued this statement saying, "the san francisco 49ers and jim harbough have mutually agreed to part ways. the 49ers organization has begun its search for the team's next head coach." harbough finished off his fourth season as the 9ers coach with an icy gatorade bath. then he talked about his four years with the team. >> i had a lot of fun. it's the relationships that were made along the way, and that's what a team is.

i appreciate fans the people of the bay area the 49er faithful. >> as fans poured out of the new levi stadium, many said they were sad to see harbough go. >> i wish he would faye stay. you know so what you had a bad we're. everybody has a bad year. >> i realize football is a business. players are traded and so are the coaches. i am proud that he brought our team to the super bowl. >> tonight as he prepares to coach another team harbough reflected on his legacy with the 9ers. it's been a tremendous thrill. one of the great thrills of my life, and be forever proud. >> so what's next for the coach? well, our colleagues at comcast sports have confirmed that he is headed to the university of michigan. reporting live in santa clara, mary ann, nbc bay area news.

>> thanks mary ann. according to jim harbough this right here one of the guys who is going to football heaven comcast sports 49er insider matt maoko snapped this photo of frank gore saying good-bye to jim harbough inside the 49ers locker room. our team coverage continues with comcast sports net. kelly swron son has more on harbough's last game with the 49ers, and he went out as he came in. a winner. >> yeah. it was a fitting end. often emotional final game for the players who wanted to send jim harbough out with a win spshgs they did just that. still, after the game many of the 49ers expressed disbelief that harbough was really out as head coach. cardinals and 49ers season finale. jim harbough. even sharing a hug before the game. then head coach and quarterback with one last shoulder pad check. colin kaepernick to bruce miller in the corner of the end zone. miller toe taps to the touchdown. 20-17. ryan lynnly off by daul.

daul gives the game ball to harbough, and that says it all right there. kap takes one last knee and harbough gets the gatorade shower. they are showing their coach some love as his final game as head coach. >> coach harbough is the coach that drafted me. he is the coach that chose to start me. he is the coach that stood behind me through everything. >> my best years being with him, that's a team that's a winner. he was here. we won. i just wish him the best. i know whatever team he goes to the nfl, college, he is going to be fine. he is going to get it done. >> today's game may have been frank gore's final. he is a free agent. said he would like to stay but also wants to see who the next head coach is before making a decision. there's more coming up on xfinity sports sunday. >> jim harbough and the search for a new 49er coach is the top story on our website.

nbc bay area.com. the team will be holding a 1:00 news conference tomorrow afternoon. we'll keep you updated on what in fact, does happen next. now to our developing story on missing air asia flight 8501. in a news conference just hours ago indonesia's top rescue official said because of where the plane lost contact, it is believed to be at the bottom of the sea. the plane and the 162 people on board have been missing for more than a day. it was an hour into its two-hour flight from indonesia to singapore when it dropped off the radar. officials say the plane asked to change altitude because of storms right before it disappeared. today more than 12 navy ships, five planes three helicopters, and a number of warships took part in the search both over the sea and over land. family members are clinging to hope at the airport and waiting for updates. >> a few thousand indonesians live here in the bay area. none of them contacted local

conflict so far asking if a relative had been on the flight but the conflict general is ready to help. nbc bay area joins us live from their san francisco office with more. nanette. >> well terry, the indonesian consulate office says it may not have heard from anyone yet because it's been closed for the holidays. there are a fair number of them students and business men. many are very familiar with air asia as it is a low cost airline that helps i understand kneesians fly regionally. oftentimes it's the only way to travel from one island to another. like the families waiting in agony for word on the fate of the jetliner. a representative from information affairs here says they too are holding out hope that the plane will be found if there are survivors. better than anned lucy says singapore is a popular destination for indonesians and

injured tonight after the car he was driving crashed into a san jose creek. witnesses say the car was speeding about 8:30 this morning and it struck a railing on the bridge at piedmont road. it bounced off the railing and went airborne and landed in the creek about 15 feet below the street. debris from the car littered the creek. >> in addition now because there is a creek here the fluids from the car ended up in the creek. the hazardous teams are dealing with the gasoline and oils that are down in the waterways. >> there's no word on when the cleanup will be complete. it took two hours for crews just to get the car out of there. >> the shooting in sunnyvale has sent one man to the hospital and two men to jail. officers found the victim about 3:00 this morning at a home on north fair oaks avenue near east taylor. the man was shot in the leg. he is expected to survive. police say it began with an argument between neighbors in that very area. two suspects -- first two shots

i didn't get to see him, but i poked my head out the window and i saw him shoot, like three more shots. >> today's shooting is just down the street from a deadly officer-involved shooting. last june police say glen was brandishing a gun, and an officer served a search warrant at his home. according to investigators he refused to drop his weapon which turned out to be a bb gun, and officers opened fire. >> when palo alto police found someone -- the suspect pulled over on high street at first. the police say as they approach the suspects drove straight at them. both officers got into their cars tracked down the suspect in the backyard at a home on loma verde avenue. augustan now faces charges including assault with a deadly

weapon and vehicle theft. the two officers did not require medical attention. a fall from a north bay cliff. the rescue operation caught on tape. and the vandals on christmas day. an islamic center cleaning up shattered glass. coming up next, the new evidence that this may not be a hate crime. we're tracking more chilly temperatures heading into tomorrow morning, but probably not as cold as the last couple of nights. that, however, is about to change this week as another winter blast heads for the bay area with gusty winds and lowering sthoe levels up and down california. the microclimate forecast when we come back
